IDVD Burn Settings

I am tired of burning discs on idvd with a menu, and having to wait for it to encode and burn on the discs. How can I burn a dvd on iDVD to instantly play the movie once it's inserted in the player? If it's not possible, what are some other options for buring dvds to use that format for macs?

I am tired of burning discs on idvd with a menu, and having to wait for it to encode and burn on the discs.
With or without a menu, the encoding still has to be done before burning can begin. If you are burning multiple copies of the same project, here is one way to save time. Go to File>Save as disk image. This will create a file that can be viewed using your computer's DVD player. This has two advantages:
1. You can view the project and find any errors and correct them before burning and wasting a DVD.
2. The encoding is saved; you can burn multiple copies of the disk image using Disk Utility without repeating the encoding process for each disk.
I hope this helps.

  • Why is iDVD burning incomplete?

I imported and edited my video in iMovie HD. I shared the video to iDVD and when I set everything up in the menus and all that, I burned my video and it ejects the blank DVD before it even starts burning. It ejects the disc at the "Multiplexing and burning..." stage, with a "Time remaining: about one minute". It says it's already done burning, but there is no burn mark on the DVD itself—it is still a blank DVD. I tried everything, I've gotten a few DVD's to burn, but some just won't burn.
How can I fix this issue?

Hi I managed to finally solve the problem and it was a simple DVD disc changing. SDMacuser reminded me of the speed of the DVD disc they have. The one I have is a 4X. I used a Fujifilm DVD+RW (no speed written on the disc).
What I did was a mix method as suggested on different postings:
    1) Exported to idvd from imovie, with chapters. Change the navigation text. From +Why is iDVD burning incomplete?+ (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1991062&tstart=15)
    2) I burn a disk image as J Keller suggested, and used Disk Utility to burn onto the DVD disc. From +Idvd ejecting while in the burn stage+ (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10293881#10293881)
I also burn successfully directly from iDVD using the faster speed DVD disc. So i would encourage everyone to check the burning speed of their DVD discs. It is usually written in big letters on the DVD disc surface: a number with a capital letter "X" as a metric. Eg. "2X", "16X". This might be the key to the incomplete burning problem.
I wasn't able to burn from iDVD to my DVD disc (with speed 4x), even after i have changed the burn speed settings of iDVD to 4x and 2x. Therefore i concluded that the problem is my disc.
How to change burn speed settings on iDVD:
    -iDVD>Preferences>Advanced>Preferred DVD Burning Speed.
Lastly, the resources here really helped. Would encourage everyone to read thru the posts patiently. Most sincere thanks to everyone who contributed.

  • Dual layer DVD will not play after iDVD burning

    Hi All,
I am having some trouble making a useable DVD. I have a video that I recorded and imported into iMovie (2h33m long). I exported it to iDVD, which told me that I needed to use a dual layer DVD to make it fit. Here's where I noticed the first problem: iDVD has one option for a dual layer disc, stating that it has 7.7GB storage space, and my discs have 8.5GB. I set it to use the standard setting for the DL disc any ways, turned the quality down a bit to make it fit, and burned the DVD. After burning two discs, I still do not have one that works. It comes up as "supported disc not available" on my Mac, and as a blank disc on any other machine I put it in. It will run on my coworker's brand new iMac, but that is the only one. Am I doing something wrong? The only mistake that I have corrected since I have tried all this is changing the aspect ratio back from 4:3 to 16:9 in iMovie (I am not sure how that happened, as the video was originally recorded in 16:9). I am re-exporting the file to my desktop now in the proper ratio, and changed the quality to HD. I am waiting for the file to encode as we speak. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this work is for my local school board and is very time sensitive.
    I am running a 28" iMac, 2.66GHz Intel i5, 8GB RAM, 1TB hard drive on OSX 10.6.8.

I set it to use the standard setting for the DL disc any ways, turned the quality down a bit to make it fit, and burned the DVD.
    That part I don't understand.
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1502?viewlocale=en_US
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced two-pass technology to encode your video (The first pass determines which parts of the movie can be given greater compresson without quality loss and which parts can’t.  The second pass then encodes those different parts accordingly) , resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • IDVD burning one project on multiple macs? where are project contents?

How do I burn one project on multiple macs? I have a idvd project I created in keynote, added music to it in Garageband, exported to quicktime, and now is in iDVD burning just fine. However I have tons of these dvd's to make, I would like to put all my mac's to work.
last night i tried to share the file, and it is just an alias when i drag it over from the macbook it was created on to my imac. the file says it is in use and locked, since the macbook that created it is burning it. If I wanted to brun on the imac, I had to wait until the macbook was done.
is there a way around this? What if I copied all files I used to make the idvd project to my imac or any computer i wanted to burn on? woudl it hen allow two macs to be burning the same project?
I figured I could do this just like on my PC, drag the file over and voila...no such luck, its like if i had dragged a shortcut over to another pc...if the first one is using the file, its locked. Basically how do i get to the actual contents of the project, so I can also bring them over and hopefully it will allow me to burn on multiple macs at the same time?
my next solution if that didn't work was to start copying dvd's using popcorn on the other macs while the macbook continues burning through idvd.
Any opinions on how i can duplicate a dvd fast...need alot of copies!

Also as to where the files are.

  • IDVD burned disk does not start at main menu

The IDVD burned disk starts randomly in the middle of the disk. Cannot access the main menu. I started with an IMovie with chapter headings, videos and pictures. Then shared it with IDVD, created themes, music, changed the headers, etc. Burned the disk using the File Burn DVD command. The disk takes over 1 1/2 hours (IMovie orginal is 15 minutes) to burn.

Hello to all of you first-timers here!
    Welcome to the discussions.
First, are you using iMovie 9?
Did you set chapter markers in iMovie? Did you follow the Chaper Marker Rules?
RULES: No marker at the beginning of your movie, no markers within 2 seconds of the beginning or end of the movie, and no markers on or within 2 seconds of your movie.
Next, did you put your movie in iDVD and then go make any changes to it? Sometimes that causes the chapters to default to the same spot in the movie. The only solution is to recreate the iDVD project.
You should first try deleting iDVD's preference file. You can find this by closing iDVD, going to your Home file (YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.idvd.plist
Drag this plist file to the trash. iDVD will create a new one when you relaunch it.
    Reopen iDVD.
Try creating the disk image file again or burning a disk again.
If that results in the same problem, create a new iDVD project. Then, drag in the iMovie project from the Media/Movies pane in iDVD instead of sharing it from iDVD.
Post back if that does not resolve the issue.

  • Idvd burned to dvd+r not compatible with pc?

i've dragged an imovie to idvd, burned a dvd+r and turned it over to someone to show on a pc, and it's not reading.
    i would appreciate your help!
    thanks.

The DVD drives on some PCs will have trouble with DVD-R, but should be fine with +R. You might want to try reducing errors by slowing down the burning process and using the highest quality media (Verbatim is often recommended; I also use Sony). To burn slowly, you'll need to create a disc image from iDVD, and with older versions of iDVD, I've read that Patchburn software is needed. Search this forum for details.

  • IDVD Burning then not burning

    Hi,
I have created my project in iDVD and I am making multiple copies. iDVD burns to DVD ok and the DVD's play fine in a DVD player or PC. After the 6th DVD the discs are now blank even though the iDVD progress bar tells me it has been burnt them.
I tried re-creating the DVD again and exactly the same thing happened again. After 2 discs thet don't play. Am I doing something wrong?
    Dame

I can burn about 2 disks then I start to get a message saying 'burn cannot be verifyed'
It sounds like something in your drive is heating up - I guess the drives in our computers may not be designed for 'production' use. You may have to adjust your disc burning duty cycle to something like do a burn, wait 15 minutes, do another burn, wait 15 minutes, etc. This should give your drive a chance to cool down.

  • TS2180 DVDs won't play in regular DVD players iDVD burns with no errors the DVDs always get out into a folder ???

Dear Apple friends The iDVD burns DVDs with-out any error messages but DVDs dont play in regular DVD players I notice that the DVD burns to a folder and there is no setting to prevent this How do you burn the DVD with-out it getting put into a folder ??? Thanks Mike

That often is a result of using inferior DVD disks and burning at too high a speed.  What brand and type of disk did you use and what speed did you burn at?
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

    Many thanks for the diagnostics.
Failed while scanning for CD / DVD drives, error 2380.
Error while opening iTunes CD driver.  This could be caused by a corrupted iTunes file or a conflict with other older CD burning applications, either currently installed or previously installed and uninstalled incorrectly.
With that one, I'd start with solution 3 from the following document:
iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install

  • Combining two iDVD burned DVDs on a single DVD (regular or DL)

    Any insight appreciated:
Does any one know if it is possible to combine two iDVD burned DVDs (burned with iDVD current in 2002) on a single DVD either single or double layer?
17" Flat Panel 1GHz G4 1 GB RAM 80GB Internal   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iLife '05 (iDVD 5.0.1 and iMovie 5.0.2) on internal, iDVD projects on 300GB LaCie external

This has been solved. Downloaded and used a program called Handbrake and it successfully extracted the movies, iDVD could read and with a new menu the combined effort was successfull.

  • Will iDVD burn a dvd with surround sound?

I have a quicktime movie with surround sound I'd like to burn to a DVD. Will iDVD burn this and keep the surround intact?
If not, will the latest Toast do this?
If not, are there any other OSX apps that will burn a dvd with surround, preferably a cheap one? I know DVDSP will do it, but that's overkill for burning one disc.

Hey don't get me wrong, dolby digital surround is way
better than ProLogic, but give the dudes credit that
came up with ProLogic in the pre-dolby digital days
some credit, it is "true" surround.
Sure, it is surround, but it's not the same as having four separate channels. There are limitations to what you can encode, and you can end up with unintended issues on both stereo and surround material. It was a cool invention that was a big improvement on stereo, but it just isn't the same as actually having the channels. It just isn't "four true distinct signals" - it simply can't reproduce everything four true distinct signals can.
I should have said I need actual discrete channels.

  • How to change burn settings

I tried to change my burn settings to burn my playlist onto a cd. However, I noticed the disc burner was called Matshita DVD-R UJ-898. I'm not burning a dvd. It should be what I put in DC-R. Is there a way to change it. I can't remember if it's always been there or not. I really didn't pay attention when I would burn songs before.

That's the model name of your optical drive, reflecting that it is DVD capable.  It will always be called that in the burn options unless you install another model drive. The disc format you select determines the burn mode.

  • Why doesn't iDVD burn changes made within iMovie?

I have iMovie 6.0.3 and iDVD 6.0.3 and have made several movies and DVDs over the past few years. But now have hit something very frustrating....
    1) I've just completed a movie in iMovie. Took it to iDVD, created menus etc. then burned it to a DVD-RW. Noticed a couple of changes I wanted to make, namely a soundtrack volume adjustment, and a subtitle change (within iMovie). Made the changes in iMovie.
    2) When I opened iDVD again, it said it noticed some changes in the iMovie project and would I accept them. Answered yes. When I reviewed these changes in iDVD preview, all was well. It showed the new subtitle.
    3) Did another burn (3-4 hour process, mostly encoding) to disk image. Lo and behold, this new movie still showed the OLD subtitle!!
    4) Deleted this disk image file. Checked the iDVD preview again, and it showed the corrected subtitle. Created a NEW disk image (for the THIRD time!) and four hours later discover that the OLD subtitle is still there!!!
What the heck is going on?? iMovie file was modified, resulting iDVD project file reflected the change, but the "burn" result does NOT reflect the change!!!! Why is iDVD Burn sill picking up the old version of my movie?____
    Thanks-

You're right. Only selecting Advanced>Delete Encoded Assets did the trick. Otherwise, even though iDVD recognizes that the iMovie file had changed, it doesn't necessarily "pick up" all the changes ....unless you Delete Encoded Assets.
I don't know which changes iDVD does or doesn't pick up, but in future I will always Delete Assets to be sure. Saves lots of time in the long run.
    THANKS for your help!!
P.S. I did not have background encoding enabled. Never do.

  • IDVD burning poorly? Help please

    Hi,
Not sure why when i burn on iDVD the quality is freaking poor i'm burning on the best quailty (as per IDVD) so im not sure if it's iMOVIE that's transfering poorly or it's iDVD burning poorly.
I want that the DVD transfer from iMOVIE to come out the same as it is in iMOVIE.
Let me know what i can do,
    -Joey

    Hi Sue,
No it's just regular DV format to DVD... no photos or anything.
However in iDVD I did use a few photos for my menu screen before playing the actual dvd content... here's a screenshot as you can see it looks pretty clear however when i click on preference, under the PROJECT tab, I highlighted BEST QUALITY and it doesn't come close to the screenshot... why is that?
Is there a way I can make sure it burned very good? I know with Compressor (Final Cut Pro) you can save it as .M2V or .M4V and then burn it in toast along with the .aif file.
    Here's my screenshot: http://i21.tinypic.com/24yzdye.png
I hope someone can help me out
    Thanks again,
    -Joey
