IDVD picture quality is poor

Regardless of method chosen, (professional, best or whatever the third option ius) all DVD's I create, the pictures are blurred, cannot be ceaned up, and look bad.
Meanwhile, burning pictures to a CD, are fully pixeled, mainain the original resolution and look great on a monitor or TV screen.
Why must this be?
If I can take full resolution pics from iPhoto and burn them to a CD, or for tht matter, play them as a slide show, with music, they are knock dead gorgeous.
Why would iDVD degradation, be so evident?
Documentation to this issue is so confusing or off-point, I'm now as confused as I am puzzled,
Ken

iDVD encodes media to video standeard definition which is 640 x 480 pixels for NTSC.  It's always going to be less that a full sized image viewed on a Mac's high res monitor.  It's not iDVD but the accepted DVD video standards that dictate that size.
How are you adding the photos to iDVD?  If you're creating the slideshow in iPHoto and then sharing to iDVD that converts the iPhoto slideshow into a moive file and imports that.
I've found that creating the slideshow entirely in iDVD, using only the transitions available in iDVD and the standard "classic" theme I get the best final image quality.  The downside to that is there are no alternative themes to use nor the KB effect.
If you create the slideshow in iMovie use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option istead of the Share ➙ iDVD option.  This will give you a much better quality movie exported to iDVD.
Also follow this workflow to help get the best quality final iDVD disk possible:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • IDVD picture quality

Just wondering I just made a dvd from tape on my camcorder which is min dv. The picture quality of the dvd is not as good as when you play the tape onto the TV using the camera. In other word the dvd picture quality is not as good as the mini dv is this normal even when the encoding quality is set to prof. Thanks Rob

.....is this normal even when the encoding quality is set to prof.
The DVD is highly compressed data. so yes the the .dv (or minidv tape) will always look somewhat better than the compressed version.
Hope this helps and good luck.

  • IDVD image quality v.poor

I have just bought iWork 08 for iDVD as I need the improved quality for slideshows, however the so called "professional quality" is balony! after you have set this quality level then put the dvd into your player and play it, its rubbish, the quality is worse than iDVD 06!
For a few new features this is a waste of money, no better performance in fact its worse!

For the highest quality slideshows, I use FotoMagico. It gives you an option to encode a DV file at a high quality level. When the movie file is used in iDVD, slideshow quality is improved.
    See http://homepage.mac.com/prof_pixel/FotoMagico.jpg
BTW, the 'Pro Quality' encoding only make a difference if your content is over 60 minutes. Under 60 minutes, 'Best Perfotmance' give the best quality.

  • IDVD picture quality poor

When I burned a movie of photographs in iMovie06 to play on both computers and TV my movie looked lovely. Now in iMovie09 it looks bad. What am I doing wrong?
Once I burn the movie onto a DVD the picture flickers. I am frustrated by poor quality movies that I no longer want to share with friends and family. I love the new map features and enjoy using the Ken Burns effect but I am not proud of my finished projects anymore. Does anyone have a suggestion about this problem?
    I will appreciate your help.

    Kathy,
I assume you're talking about SD video? If so, download the free application MPEG Streamclip. Load your source video file there first, and do and "Export to Quicktime", which will create a Deinterlaced source file for iMovie 09 to work with that has the original quality from the source. iMovie 09 does throw away data on import. It is something I have reported to Apple and provided them with all the information to show what's happening. Until and unless they come up with a fix, you have to use either an older version of iMovie, or provide a different source to iMovie '09. The extra step through MPEG Streamclip is pretty painless and I can provide you with the parameters I use when setting up SD footage to be edited in iMovie '09.

There's also an excellent PDF file available called "The Ins and Outs of iMovie '09" which does an excellent job of explaining how to get the best out of iMovie '09. It also talks to the issue of iMovie '09 throwing away every other line of data.

  • Camera picture quality

Hello bought an iPad2 16 g WiFi  from Comet for my wife last week on offer.  Closing down sale. Model was in demo mode.  On my macbook pro I reset it on itunes and got rid of demo mode etc . Anyway I'm rambling on.  During daytime the camera facing out  takes good pics. However at night and under artificial light the picture quality is poor and there's no flash.  I have not bought iphoto yet for this ios.  Will iphoto improve night or arfificial pics?  Will anything else?  Bit dissapointed iphoto wasnt there already.  Also pity photostream doesn't allow videos.
    Regards.

Can't expect too much from a 0.7MP camera.
You can use Noise Reduction software to clean the "Noise"

  • HOW DO I CORRECT PICTURE QUALITY

    Hello--
I have just finished authoring my project in DVD Studio Pr 4 and all is perfect EXCEPT: the picture quality is poor.
I started in Final Cut Pro, used Compressor at the Best Setting and it does not look good as the master.
    Any suggestions?
I was going to get my master (on DVCAM tape) and have it ENCODED via hardware at a facility and then bring it into DVDSP4 as an ASSET so that the quality is as it is on the master.
Does this mean that I may lose quality by doing this?
    Is this the best method?
I do not want to re-encode because it took so long on my system. Should I consider bringing in my friend's G5 Dual 2 to continue and encode again.
Thanks, all! This is an amazing site.

    Hello all--
Thanks for your post. Okay, here's the skinny:
    1. I am burning to dual layer disc because when I encoded the 54 minute version, the file was 2.5 gigs and when I encoded the 29 minute version of my show, it ended up being 1.7 gigs. This with the special features ended up making the Studio Pro file 5.4 gigs which was too big to put on a dvd-5.
To be honest, I would rather burn this to a DVD-5 instead of a DVD-9 because manufacturing costs would be low so...
    2. If I encode my show again, should I:
Go from Final Cut and Export:
    Quicktime? or
    MPEG?
What type of encode should I use "High Quality" and what bitrate should it be set on.
    3. Regarding DVD stock, I will stick with Verbatim but I was wondering:
    Should I use DVD-R, RW, +, - ? It's really confusing.
I am mostly having trouble with transitions. That is when it looks the worst...other areas of the film (movement, etc.) are fine.
    Thanks for the help.

  • How can i improve burning quality of dvd.looks fine in preview on idvd, but final burn quality is poor/

how can i improve burning quality of dvd.looks fine in preview on idvd, but final burn quality is poor.

Had same problem with iPhoto pictures and poor burn quality. Went back to original picture file and dragged images into idvd project from there. Set encoding at professional quality and burned at slowest speed. Got very good result with high quality slideshow when played on TV.
Also tried Old Toad's Aug 30, 2011 advice to get a slideshow into iDVD with transitions, music, etc. from iPhoto.
Again the quaility of the burned CD was very good.

I am attempting to convert 8mm video cassettes to dvd using a video cassette player, elgato video capture with rca/usb connections to the mac then editing in imovie and burning dvd-r using idvd. The picture quality is awful. What can I do??????

At what point is the video quality bad?  Is it bad on capture?  I would recommend using an s-video 1394 firewire converter instead.  They capture the video at a higher bit rate.  If you have a lot of 8mm tapes to capture, invest in a stand alone DVD recorder.  They capture and compress in one shot.  If you need to rip it back from the DVD into iMovie again, I would recommend using DVDxDV.

  • How to get good picture quality on a burned DVD slideshow using IDVD?

After producing a slideshow on IDVD from either jpg or psd photos, it looked great when I played the project. Picture quality was excellent. When I burned a DVD to share the slideshow with a friend and when I played this on the same computer, it had lost resolution and looks awful. I am using best quality but this made no difference. On a hdtv using a standard player, the quality is mediocre. Is there any way to get a decent picture quality. I have also burned a DVD and CD from the IPhoto album, and the quality is better. IPhoto will not burn a slideshow or at least I do not know how to. Can you produce decent quality DVD using IDVD or is there a better application to produce decent DVD of photo slideshows?

....or is there a better application to produce decent DVD of photo slideshows?
Yes. It's called DVDSP (apple's top of the line DVD Authoring application). It has a much longer learning curve than iDvd and is more $$$ but it does work well. The Help Menu alone is over 640 pages long. However, is this app significantly better than iDvd solely in terms of visual quality?.... No.
But it does offer many more tools to address visual artifacts on the finished DVD, more audio control, much better control of durations per slide, audio, buttons that work as expected, among other things. (for additional examples of this see chapter 12 of the DVDSP Help Menu / starting on p. 373).
Short of DVDSP, and much less money, you can also try these 2 third party apps which come highly recommended on this iDvd Forum:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
    http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/overview/
At the moment most macs do not yet support burning to Blueray (which does offer much better results). Once this technology is more commonplace, then I believe we will see a significant improvement in what you are trying to do above.
Hope this is helpful but if not just come on back.

My new Ipad camera takes poor picture quality compare to my iphone 4g. Is it should be so?

    Hi pjl,
Yes I forgot to mention, the iPad does lose the tether when it sleeps, so I turned sleep off permanently which is probably not great for battery life either!
I just don't understand why another iPhone4 can connect to the personal hotspot with absolutely no intervention once it knows the password. That's how it should be on the iPad. They are both running the latest iOS5 so why any difference?

I would appreciate any guidance on options to choose and approaches such that I get the best picture quality when I view an iMovie product on a wide screen HD TV using a DVD burned with iDVD. Choose wide screen or standard format in iMovie? Best Performance or Prof. Quality in iDVD? ...

    Good Morning,
My computer is using Snow Leopard 10.6.5 and has ilife 09 installed on an imac. I have been reading it is better to use imovie 06. When I tried to do a custom install from the 06 disk imovie and idvd were grayed out but had a checkmark. It would not let me deselect idvd. Not really knowing how to do this I quite the process. Can you or someone please advise me on how and what exactly to do in order to accomplish a custom install of imovie 06? Should I delete imovie 09 first? If so how is this accomplished. Perhaps it would be less complicated to purchase photo to movie? Really do not want to spend unless it is necessary since I only know a little about what I'm doing but enough to be dangerous to my computer

  • Output 16:9 QT to iDVD w/ chap mkrs-poor quality video-WHY?

I imported ftg rom Sony HDV (shot as HD 1080i) as DV NTSC anamorphic. edited the project. then added chap. mkrs. now I want to export this as 16:9 into iDVD. I have heard all the problems associated with doing this. I am very confused as to how to complete this project. When I increase the quality of the export through qt conversion I seem to loose the chap mkrs. so I guess I will export as standard qt movie w/ chap mkrs. then I will put this thru the "anamorphisizer". then import this new file into iDVD. Is there a better way to do this to improve the picture quality?

Are you looking at the output on a video monitor? Are
you talking about after the DVD has been burned, or
the QI player of the exported file? Is the QT player
set to high quality? exporting to QT Conversion will
not not improve the image, even if you use a lossless
codec. Don't be confused by what you see on the
computer screen. Different codecs will display
    different and behave differently. Unfortunately
you're still ending up crushing it to MPEG-2 onto a
DVD designed for display on a television set.
I am looking at the DVD after it was burned. It seems to have lost a lot of quality from the way it lookked in FCP. I guess that is just because of the compression in iDVD?

  • Using Premiere Pro CS3 When exporting as flash file poor picture quality

I'm using Premiere Pro CS3. I shoot green screen in HDV and work in 1440 x 1080. I have been capturing files in Premiere and sending them to Serious Magic Ulta 2. I use this program for keying and adding virtual backgrounds. I save these files as avi. with a resolution of 1440 X 1080. I then bring them back into Premiere Pro for final edit. When I export these video's encoded as mpeg2 theyplay very clear. I am now trying to export as flv. with alpha channel background and the resolution is poor. I working on the transparent background with walk on spokespersons that overlay the HTML page. When In try to play them on my computer the adobe media player is what comes up. I have downloaded flash player but it doesn't select it to play the video. I'm running windows Vista Business platform. What am I doing wrong.

    Thanks for the reply.
The capture and editing have already been done in 1440 X 1080. Should I use this resolution rather than trying to bump it up to 1920 X 1080.
    Thanks

Subject: Using Premiere Pro CS3 When exporting as flash file poor picture quality
Computer playback generally prefers square pixels.  Make sure to set your output resolution to 1920 x 1080 using a Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) of 1.0 or Square.
    See if that helps.

  • Premiere Elements 13 poor picture quality

    Hi Folks
I recently bought Premier Elements 13 as a Christmas present for myself. I decided I wanted a stable program that would produce good quality video, and I was prepared to pay for it.
However, my first couple of videos have been disappointing.
I have Elements installed on my Windows (7)  PC.
I use MP4 video files from my camera which play well on my PC.
However once imported into PE13, the video files lose picture quality, and the final edited product looks awful. I have tried publishing as MPEG, AVI and MP4 with the same poor results.
I guess I must be doing something wrong as I thought PE13 was supposed to be good!
Any advice (in very basic language) would be gratefully received.
    Thanks very much
    Adrian

    Adrian
Great news that you were able to produce an excellent .mp4 file with your Premiere Elements 13.
The keys to success are getting a match between the project preset and the properties of the source video (whether you do that manually or the project does it automatically).
The project will take over this task unless you intervene. Sometimes the project does it right, sometimes not...for the not, that is when you set the project preset manually.
You have to evaluate the description in the Publish+Share/ area in making your choices there. Some of the choices require customization of the preset under the Advanced Button/Video Tab/Audio Tab/Multiplexer Tab. That is because the default settings of a preset may be for a lower resolution than your source video. And, you can generate .mp4 under Publish+Share/Computer/Mobile Phones and Players as well as under Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD.
The above is an assortment of miscellaneous information. If you decide to want to explore settings other than for .mp4, then we can discuss them in details when your
    schedule permits.
    Best wishes
    ATR.
