IDVD with chapters

Are there real clear instructions somewhere to create an iDVD project using a Final Cut Express movie with chapter markers? I is easy with iMovie, but not sure how to do it with a Final Cut Express. I think I need the instructions to start from how to put chapter markers in Final Cut and all the way through iDVD.

Here's how I do it, and I've been getting good results every time:
TO GET A FINAL CUT EXPRESS PROJECT READY FOR iDVD:
Make sure the Easy Setup has DV-NTSC chosen (or PAL if that's your format), not NTSC DV Converter or anything else. Otherwise, the movie that you export and drop into iDVD won't work--it won't have its chapter markers, or the buttons won't work, or both.
TO ADD CHAPTER (SCENE) MARKERS FOR iDVD:
Don't put a Chapter Marker at the start of the FCE movie--iDVD does that for you. Anywhere else, put the playhead where you want the chapter marker to be and hit the M key twice. On the box that appears, click Add Chapter Marker. FCE will then put <Chapter> into the comment box. Leave it exactly that way, or it won't work. Give the marker a name (you can change it later in iDVD) in the Name box. Click OK. You can have 99 chapter markers.
EXPORTING YOUR FCE PROJECT FOR iDVD:
Before exporting your FCE project, in the Timeline, first Select All, then choose Sequence > Render All > Both. Next Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown, which merges all the audio. Now you're ready to export the project as a QuickTime Movie: File > Export > Quicktime Movie (and NOT a self-contained movie, unless you have good reason to do so), and at the options, choose Audio-and-Visual and Chapter Markers. After FCE exports, drop the resulting Quicktime movie into iDVD (not into a drop zone, into the background of whatever "Theme" you choose). Your FCE project's title should then appear in the iDVD theme along with a Scene Selection button for your Chapter Markers. That button will lead to other Scene Selection screens (six scenes per screen).
CUSTOMIZING YOUR PROJECT IN iDVD:
Any digital photo or other image file (Tiffs preferred) that you drop into an iDVD Theme's background will become the new background image, and you can also replace a theme's music with a music of your own. In this way you can customize and personalize any iDVD theme.
BURNING YOUR iDVD PROJECT TO A DVD
After you get everything looking and working the way you want it in iDVD, I advise burning it as a disk image first, so you can examine and test it with DVD Player before burning it to a DVD. If you're satisfied with it, you can use Toast in its Copy mode to burn the disk image to a DVD.

Exporting From FCE to IDVD With Chapters How long will the DVD hold??? if i have an hour and 40 minutes of HD footage all cut together with FCE and has been saved as a movie file, how many hours will IDVD let me burn to it?
if i run over the allowed amount will it say i need to drop quality, i am editing loads at the moment and dont want to get to the end and it come up with an error message. also will idvd include the chapter markers if i export with them?

    Sure, no problem.
    1. Go to Project > Project Info in iDVD.
    2. Make sure "DVD Type" is set to a single-layer DVD.
    3. Under "Encoding," choose "Best Performance." Is the arrow solidly in the green portion of the quality bar? If so, go ahead and burn your disc.
    4. If not, choose "High Quality." Again, go ahead and burn your disc if the arrow is solidly in the green.
    3. If the arrow still isn't in the green, select Professional Quality. If the arrow's in the green, burn your disc. If not, you'll have to delete some of the menus (scene selection, etc.) or menu content and check again. You should be able to burn up to 2 hours if you don't have a lot of other menu content.

  • 16:9 in iDVD with chapters...

I'm exporting a clip with chapter markers with *QuickTime Movie...*. The I put the movie into iDVD. Voila, the chapters all make auto-menu systems and stuff and it's all good.
BUT, when I preview the video, it doesn't fill the screen. I get gray bars on the right and left.
So, I thought about it and I tried opening them in QuickTime. They looked kinda similar there, so I went into the properties and picked production. That made things look right in QuickTime, but it still doesn't fill the 16:9 frame in iDVD's preview mode.
It looks right if I export it to DV, but then it loses the chapters! I want the chapters! I want chapters and the right aspect ratio! What am I supposed to do?

  • Making a DVD with chapters

I'm making a DVD on iDVD with chapters but it won't play all the way through unless it comes back to the menu. I could do it on DVD Pro but it doesn't have the theme I am using on iDVD and it won't let me import it either. iDVD let me make scenes or chapters but not where it supposed to be. How can I change that?
    Thoughts anyone?

    Hi Sheyla
This can be more than one problem. As I get it You are using FinalCut Pro and iDVD.
    Then

I have a general note on this and more - Please read.

    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding

    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mixdown
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.

    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)

    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.

May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screensaving

  • QT Movie with Chapters manually added does not import into iDVD 7

I have read several threads regarding the use of Chapters in iMovie and iDVD version 7. Since I do not own any of the pro applications I decided to create a test QT Movie with manually added chapters as described in the QT Pro Manual. I was able to create the chapters and save the movie. However, when I dropped the movie into iDVD 7 no chapters were created. I checked the iDVD Prefs and the "create chapters" option is turned on. I have read that people have been able to drop movies with chapters using one of the pro applications, but I have also read that iDVD does not always correctly encode the chapters.
Has anyone had success adding QT Movies with manually created Chapters into iDVD7?

For what it's worth, I tried manually adding chapter markers to my movies in QT Pro using those same instructions - didn't work for me (iDVD didn't recognize the chapters).
I found another application called Metadata Hootenanny (free) that easily adds chapter markers. When I did that, iDVD recognized them and automatically added a chapters sub-menu when I imported the movie. This was all in iDVD '06.
I've tried this quickly in iDVD version 7 (imported the same chapter-embedded QT movie as above) and it did the same thing (automatically added chapters sub-menu). Hope this helps.

  • How can I Burn a Simple DVD with Chapters and Menus out of My Home Videos.

I created an iMovie (unsig iMovie 10.0.2) of my daughter's volleyball season.  I inserted markers separating each game day, hoping these would create chapters in my DVD.  Then I did some research about DVD burning apps and finally downloaded BURN.  With Burn I created a DVD, but this DVD did not have chapters and also did not have a customizable menu.  The whole movie ended up as one 2 hour long chapter.
I have hundresd of family vacation on a hard drive stored and would like to start making iMovies of them to put on DVD for easy watching and forbackup  storing.
What is a simple way I can burn my iMovie with chapters onto a DVD?
My macbook pro did not come with iDVD so I dont have it.
    Thanks.

MY source is HD i beleive. I shot videos with an iPad Mini.
I ventured into this because I offered this DVD to several team parents, so they are waiting for me to give them the DVD.  While I was making it, I added subtitles, showing the game dates, game scores and stats of each player, so it came out really nice.  However, not to concern about quality, i have burt the video in a dual layer dvd in SD.  I dont have a blue ray burner nor media.
This made me want to do the same with my family vacations vieeos, whic now are a bunch of files in a hard drive, sort them by vacation and add titles like lications to actualy be abel to watch them on a dvd someday.
I have apple tv in the family room, but do not use to watch these videos, will look into that. However, I would still want to make the DVD's.
It seems odd how this, basic feature, has been dropped. I guess apple does not want us to use any more discs.
Still hoping I can do this, if not, I will have to gie away the DVDs with the 2 hour long video in a single chapter.

  • Can I create a submenu in a movie with chapters?

I have a 1 hour instructional movie with 9 chapters. I want to add dozens of submenus. I know how to go back to FCE and make chapters, but how do I make dozens of sub menus from within idvd??
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Bob
Just to mention so You not get confused. (often asked question)
If You make a movie with chapters iDVD will give a menu:
    - Play full movie + Chapters (on sub-menu)
But when You select say chapter 3 - it will play this and then continue
with Ch4 and to the end.
This is the way iDVD works !!! To just play a separate Chapter You either have
to usa another program like DVD-Studio pro (at a high cost).
    or
    a. import full movie (with no chapters
    b. import each chapter as an individual movie and put them on a sub-menu
And this is the only solutions.

  • How to export 1080 HD video to MPG4 file with chapters?

Now that I have put a sequence together in FCE, how do I create a 1080HD MPG4 file that can be used on a PC, MAC or with the WD HD Media player (for those that know the latter).
    Thanks!

That process will work, but won't give you HD video (as iDVD output is only SD). If you have FCE and Quicktime Pro, you could create what you are after.
    1) In FCE, use File->Export->Quicktime movie ... (and include all markers) -> File1
    2) In FCE, use File->Export->Using Quicktime Conversion ... -> File2
    3) Using Quicktime Pro open File1 and File2, extract the chapter track (text track) from File1 and then add it to File2.
    4) Using Quicktime Pro make the newly added text track in File2 the chapters for the video track. Save the result a self contained QT movie file.
You will now have a a HD video file with chapters.

  • IDVD 6 Chapters

I have had this issue before in version 5 and can't recall what caused it or how I fixed it.
When I drag a movie that I exported from FCP (with chapters) onto iDVD it correctly creates chapters but when I go to the 'Scene Selection' window any one of the chapters (other than no. 1) can be initially selected.
My present situation is as follows. I created highlights from my son's basketball season and created 6 chapters in the movie entitled Game 1, Game 2 and so on thru Game 5, then Awards Ceremony. When I burned the DVD and chose the Scene Selection page 'Game 2' is the highlighted. When I navigate thru the chapters it jumps all over the place and not in a logical order.
It is irritating and embarassing since I am creating this for other parents (and I don't want to leave the Apple icon illuminated if I can't make it appear professional).
    Please help.
    Rick

When I navigate thru the chapters it jumps all over the place and not in a logical order.
If I understand, you mean that when you go to chapter menus, the highlighted chapters can vary: Chapter one on one menu then chapter four on another menu instead of chapter one on that new menu.
That happened to me, and many other people, in iDVD 5. It's still happening to me on occasion in iDVD 6.0.2...
    I'm just living with it.

  • Why won't iDVD create chapters?

    Why won't iDVD create chapters?
I'm using iMovie "09" and iDVD.
I created an iMovie project with chapter markers. When I try to create a DVD project, selecting a Theme with chapters, the chapters do no appear...only the full movie.
    Don

And I figure about - if there is a setting somewhere for minutes per Chapter as in Roxio Toast ?
Go into the Map mode, select the movie there
and select the Advanced ➙ Create Chapter Markers for Movie menu option
Then you can set the Chapter length in 1 minute increments:

  • IDVD export - chapters

    Hi,
need help with chapters exported to iDVD. When i export Keynote project to iDVD it creates chapters, submenus etc. and everything works great when i check it in preview mode. But afer burning the dvd when i go to submenu and try to start any of the chapters the whole presentation starts to play from the beginning. What do i do wrong?

Pressing M twice will set a marker and call up the Marker Editor. As mentioned above by Ian, choose "Chapter". Also, make sure your finished piece is exported with Chapter Markers selected (controls for this are in the Export dialog window).

  • Aspect ratio issues in iDVD with mov files exported from FCE

Please help. I believe this is an iDVD bug. I have found some relevant discussion of it on online forums - but have not found a solution that works for me. I am looking for a workaround.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1356500&tstart=31
    PROBLEM STATEMENT:
My 4:3 movies, exported from FCE in QT-with-conversion formats (any 4:3 format) - appear in iDVD with gray side-pillars (as expected for 4:3) AND with a black line (letter-boxing) at top and bottom - as would be for 16:9. It appears the aspect ratio is also distorted i.e. 16:9. (The iDVD project is set to 4:3.)
1- A 4:3 mov file exported from FCE using Quicktime Movie format (no conversion) does not have the problem, but I cannot de-interlace the video using this export mode.
    2) A 4:3 mov file exported using QT-with-conversion mode (any 4:3 format) DOES have the problem. I need to use this mode in order to get de-interlace.
(Exception: 640x480 VGA mode does not have the black lines, and it displays correctly in dvd player on my computer screen - but on the TV screen, it crops content from the top and bottom of the movie, so this is not an option.)
    3) In Finder, if you click on mov file exported QT-only (no conversion), it opens in the FCE viewer. If you click on mov file exported in any other 4:3 mode, it opens in Quicktime viewer (i.e. there is absolutely something different in the header/ID of these files.)
    4) All mov files, regardless of export mode, show correctly in Quicktime viewer - no black line, no distortion. The problem does not occur outside of iDvd.
    5) I tried passing the QT-with-conversion mov files through an Inverse-Anamorphicizer (per suggestion on forum - this apparently fixed the problem for some people) but the resulting output mov (i.e. the inverted product) still had the same problem.
I am, so far, left with this trade-off: Give up the de-interlacing, or live with the letter-boxing/ distortion. Neither is acceptable.
I am looking for a workaround:
    1) A way to export de-interlaced 4:3 mov from FCE that shows in correct ratio in iDVD
    2) A way to "convert" / re-head mov file after exported so that it displays corrrectly (inverse-anamorphicize) so that iDVD reads it correctly
    3) Can the mov be de-interlaced after the fact (so I could use QT export without conversion)?
    4) Something besides iDVD to put this together - that doesn't have this problem? (I like and want to use the iDVD menu/theme.)
    5) Other?????
I also notice that all the QT-with-conversion mov files are 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the QT-only mov file, which is valuable and preferable to me. (I don't see any quality difference in the display...)

In the Preview window > top frame > middle button
do you have correct for pixel aspect ratio checked or not?

    Hi there
Sorry, but your post seemed to initially infer you were just referring to a Button you would insert on a page. At least that's what I understood when I posted with what I did.
Now it would seem you are referring to the Playback Controls that Captivate supplies? So either I grossly misunderstood your initial issue or you are now switching gears and asking about something different.
What I posted earlier does not apply to the Captivate Playback Controls.

  • How do I export as in AIFF file with chapters to burn in iTunes?

I taped a round table discussion which is about an hour long. After editing in FCE, I need to make a CD of the discussion, ideally creating 12 five minute long songs. Is there a way to export an aiff file with chapters which I can then burn in iTunes as 12 separate songs? Please tell me I don't need to make and export 12 separate sequences.

Mark In and Out points in the timeline. Export. MArk new In and Out points and export again. Rpeat 10 more times.
