Don't rely on iCloud to back up your pictures.  It's designed to sync them to your devices, not back them up.  Photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days, allowing your devices enough time to download them.  But if you ever lose your device, or have to replace it, any photos older than 30 days will no longer be in iCloud to download.
To keep your photos, import them to your computer using your usb cable while they are still in your camera roll, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  After importing them, you will be given an option to delete them from your device.

Consider using sshfs to mount your Pi from your Linux boxes.  It's much easier to configure and manage than samba.  It sounds like you already have your Windows machines mounting your Pi so Samba is doing its job in that respect.
More info on sshfs in the Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sshfs
To help get you off the dime, here's a modified line from my fstab that I use to mount my Pi with:
    gav@PI:/mnt/backup /mnt/rpi/backup fuse.sshfs rw,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,allow_other 0 0
Subsitute my mount points with yours.
    For a password-less mount:
         ssh-copy-id gav@PI
after you've set up ssh and generated some keys on your client box.
Here are some relevant lines from the smb.conf file on my Pi that I use for my one Windows box in the house that might help you with your write permissions:
       security = user
      hosts allow = 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
      guest account = gav

  • After updating my software to iOS 6 when I take a photo in an app on my iPhone such as Instagram and camwow when the photos go my camera roll they are black..why?

After updating my software to iOS 6 when I take a photo in an app on my iPhone such as Instagram and camwow when the photos go my camera roll they are black..why?

I upgraded an iPhone 4 from IOS 4 to IOS 6 and had similar problems here is what I did.
    Problem:
Using the Camera App from the initial screen (a view finder for me) there is an icon on the lower left side with my last photo taken.  When I select this icon the image is displayed and on the upper left side of the screen the Camera Roll button appears.
I select the Camera Roll button and all my images show up as black on a white background.  I can select a black square and my image will apear.
Using the Instagram App when I try to select from my Camera Roll I see the same black boxes, and Instagram is not saving photos to my Camera Roll.
    Fixing Instagram not saving problem:
    Go to Settings:Privacy:Photos
Move the Instagram slider to ON
Back to the images not showing in the Camera Roll.
Someone suggested doing a reset (hold down sleep and home button for 10 seconds).  After doing the reset the problem was worse.  From the Camera App selecting the last photo icon from the view finder screen and the Camera Roll screen apears but says there are no saved images.
Fixing the Camera Roll not showing correctly problem:
Set Settings:General:Restrictions to ON (You will be prompted to create a password)
    Select Settings:General:Restrictions ON>
Toggle the Camera slider to ON if it isnt already
This worked for me. Your milage may vary.  Good luck.

  • How do i move photos from photo library to camera roll

how do i move photos from photo library to camera roll on ipod touch 4th generation

I also had a similar problem with "photo library" and wondered how to do about copying my photos there to my computer. I was delighted when i succeeded moving my photos from my iphone4s "Photo library" to my "camera roll".
I could do it using 3 apps: 1) fileExplorer 2) fileapp 3) dropbox
Downloading these apps on my iphone devide and then Using 1) I was able to see my albums in "photolibrary" and open it in either 2) or 3). Opening it up in 2) fileapp, will give you the option to save in "camera roll" with the top right hand corner button.
After saving it in camera roll, I will be able to easily copy them out from camera roll from DCIM folder onto your computer.
I am not a comp savvy person, and I managed.

  • HT1386 I deleted all my photos in the Camera Roll folder,I created separate folders containing all my pisctures. When I sync my iPhone it shows that all the pictures are loaded. But nothing displays on my phone?

    Hey Guys,
I need some advice. I had about 9000 pitures and photos in my camera roll folder.
I wanted to manage all these pictures into separate folders for easier access.
I imported all the pictures onto my pc, and created and managed the pics.
I synced the phone and excluded the photos,as advised on the site.
The I disconnected the phone, connected again and included the pictures.
On the coclour tab it indicates that all the pictures are there, after syncing,
but on my phone, nothing appears.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there another way of importing my pictures
onto the phone and keeping the separate folders?
    Thanks,

If you don't find an iTunes backup as suggested above, another possibility is that the phone was setup to automatically back up to iCloud. You can go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage to see if your device name is listed there. If it is, the section titled "How do I restore an iCloud Backup if my device is already set up for use?" in the following link gives directions on how to resore it:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4036
Also, I'm sorry to hear you lost 5 years of pictures. Having them in one place (as you unfortunately found out) is not a good idea as all kinds of things can happen including loss of the phone. If you have a computer it is a good idea to periodically import them to the computer where you can see that they have successfully transferred to a second location. Following is instructions on how to do that if you want to in the future: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083

  • HT201302 I have over 1000 photos in my camera roll, and I have saved them to my computer.  Is there an easy way to delete some or all of them to clear out space on my iPhone?

I have over 1000 photos in my camera roll, and I have saved them to my computer.  Is there an easy way to delete some or all of them to clear out space on my iPhone?

The quick way is when you imprort them to an app on your computer, usually there is the option to delete everything on the phone that was imported.  If you declined that option, then you have to do it one by one or manualy select in edit mode.

  • Why are photos I deleted from Camera Roll re-appearing in CR when I put them into Albums from Photo Stream?

Last night I deleted some photos from my Camera Roll (on iPhone 3GS) using cable connection to my PC. I then went to Photo Stream (the photos were, correctly, still in there) and put some of them in Albums in the Photos app. Some, but not all, have now re-appeared in Camera Roll - and, very unhelpfully, not in the order they were taken. I don't want these photos in Camera Roll but can vaguely accept and understand if the app HAS to copy the Photo Stream photos to Camera Roll if you put them in Albums and they are not in Camera Roll already but then why are there 2 photos (in different Albums) that this is not happening for?
    Any ideas/advice?

    Thanks for your comments.
I connected the iPhone to my PC with the USB sync cable (I usually sync by Wifi) and opened the iPhone as a Windows window. Went to the relevant DCIM folder for the Camera Roll and Deleted them there. I checked on the iPhone before and after sycning that they had been deleted from Camera Roll - and they had. I only have one Camera Roll album (no chance of another album being synced).
They remained deleted from my Camera Roll until I put the copies of the photos held in the Photo Stream album (which I purposely did not delete them from) into an album. They then appeared in my Camera Roll again. Now, if I delete them from Camera Roll again (either direct from iPhone Photo app or via USB cable) they still reappear in my Camera Roll if I put them in an album from Photo Stream. I can see it happen before my eyes as each one appears after I have selected the photos from Photo Stream, used Share to put them in an album and then go to Camera Roll - they pop up one at a time.
It would make sense to some extent except that there are two photos (in two separate albums to the ones that are reappearing) that have definitely been deleted from the Camera Roll, have been put in their respective albums from Photo Stream but are not reappearing in Camera Roll. And, as far as I know, I did exactly the same things with them. I don't want to have the photos back in my Camera Roll but I cannot find any explanation as to why one set is appearing back in Camera Roll and these two are not.

  • Can I delete my photos from my camera roll and they still be in my photo scream and on my computer?

Can I delete all my photos from my camera roll and still have those photos in my photo stream and on my computer? Or if I delete those photos, will they also be deleted from my photo stream and my computer?

Photos deleted out of the camera roll will not delete out of Photostream. However you want to make sure that you save your photos in your photostream somewhere before they are deleted on thier 31st day.

  • How do I delete photos from my Camera roll in iOS 7

I have over 1,000 photos in my iPhone Camera Roll.  I would like to delete all the photos in the Camera Roll.  How do I do this efficiently in iOS 7?

    Hi mikeschumann,
Of course you can delete photos from your Camera Roll:
Go into your photos app and select the Camera Roll album
Click on Select at the top right of the screen
Select the photos you want to delete
Click on the Trash can at the bottom of the screen
Just remember, if you have not imported those photos into a photo app on a computer, they will be permanently deleted. You may have them on an iCloud backup, but each backup you do has only the image of the current state of your device. So, if the 1000 photos have been backed up in the last iCloud backup you do, then you delete them, and do another iCloud backup, that backup will not have those photos. Then, say, you take another 100 new photos, and back up to iCloud. That backup will have the most recent 100 photos, but not the 1000 previously backed up.
So, your best bet is to import them to your photo app on your computer, and then select delete photos from device when asked.
    Cheers,
    GB

  • Delete imported photos from iPhone camera roll?

In iPhoto, after importing photos from my iPhone I would get a prompt to delete the photos that had just been imported from the camera roll. Since the Photo Stream was implemented though, most photos would have already been imported through iCloud before I connected the phone to my Mac. iPhoto would then give an option to remove all photos that had already been imported.
The new Photos app no longer appears to have this option. I can tick to delete items after import, but I can't automatically remove all items in the camera roll that have already been imported. If I go and manually delete those photos from the camera roll on the phone, it also deletes them from the Photo Stream, and they disappear on my Mac and iPad as well.
I'm not subscribed to iCloud Photo Library. How can I make sure that all my photos continue to import onto my Mac and stay there, without keeping all the originals on the phone forever?

Yes... a real surprise (not a pleasant one)
Only workaround I know of (and have used already in testing and getting setup) is to use the Image Capture app in your main Applications folder (a standard OS X utility).
After you've imported your pictures manually from your iPhone to Photos, you can run this app and then delete what you will.
I imagine the reason for this is that PhotoStream should be taking care of this. You don't need to have the iCloud Library turned on for this to work, and photos should import automatically.
However, there are three issues with this:
Buggy: I found (at least prior to iOS 8.3) that not all of my photos on my iPhone went to the Photo Stream... never did find out why some didn't make it.
Buggy again: Many people are having issues with the latest releases getting Photo Stream to sync from an iPhone
You don't want your photos in Apple's domain.
In which case, using another app to mass delete your photos on your iPhone is (for now), your only choice.

  • How can I recover deleted photos from my camera roll?

How can I recover deleted photos from my camera roll and my photo stream?
    Please, help me!

I finally got up with a solution.
All you need is the photo file from your last backup.
You can extract this file from your backup by using iBackupbot for itunes. Get this via:
    http://www.icopybot.com/itunes-backup-manager.htm
Once you get this file you extract the photos in form of original database file. The screenshots on the website will help you to know how to extract the files.
Okay so now when you've got the photo file you simply need to SSH into your phone to /private/var/mobile/Library/photo were you'll already see a photo file.
Replace the old photo file that you've extracted from the backup by the one that already exist in.
Don't forget to keep an extra copy of the new photo file if in case you go wrong somewhere.
It worked for me and I hope it works for you too.
Thanks mende1, you were indirectly helpful.

You cannot backup photos to iCloud.
You can enable Photo Stream (in Settings > iCloud) but only for 30 days and only a max of 1000 photos.
Then what does this mean? It was copied from the kb article that I posted above.
Reducing the size of your Camera Roll backup
If you take lots of photos and videos with your iOS device, you may notice your Camera Roll takes up most of your iCloud Storage backup. To check the size of the Camera Roll backup on your device:
On your Home Screen, tap Settings.
    Tap iCloud.
    Tap Storage & Backup.
    Tap Manage Storage.
In the Backups section, tap your device.
In the Backup Options section, the backup size is displayed under Camera Roll.
To reduce the size of your Camera Roll backup, save your photos and videos locally to your computer with iTunes, and then manually back up your iOS device. If you want to keep your photos and videos on your iOS device, you can turn off Camera Roll in Backup (see the "Deleting backups and turning off Backup for your Device" section above) orpurchase additional storage.

  • How can I get all photos from the camera roll onto the photo stream so they will share between iphone and ipad?

How can I get all photos from the camera roll, and all new pictures taken, to get on the photostream so they can share between iphone and ipad?

When turning PhotoStream on with photos available in the Camera Roll, only photos captured by the iPhone or saved on the iPhone are placed in the PhotoStream.
For all photos that were in the Camera Roll prior to turning PhotoStream on, import the photos with your computer and add the photos to your PhotoStream on your computer.
