If i move my iPhoto library to an external hdd, will Time Machine backup these photos as well?

I've moved my iPhoto library to an external HDD, I was wondering if now it has been moved outside of my iMac whether Timemachine will still back up my photos, or do I have to change any timemachine preferences to accomodate such a change, any responses will be welcomed-thankyou!

Thanks, Linc, you are the greatest!
So I moved my iTunes library to my external disk.  When I checked Time Machine's Excluded list it was not there.  Then I entered TM and saw that the library had been backed up from the external disk.  So all is well and apparently the OS guys stopped adding external drives to the Excluded list.

  • I need to create a new iPhoto library and import 'ORIGINALS' from a time machine backup on an external hard drive.

I made the mistake of installing OS 10.9 on my older MacBook Air and the machine has become horribly slow and unpredictable. I visited the Apple store and questioned a 'Genius' about getting rid of 10.9 and reinstalling the previous OS 10.6 for which I have the disks. He advised that I should reformat the Air, reinstall 10.6 and then restore from the Time Machine backup that I have.
He explained that of course, after I reinsatll 10.6,  I couldn't import the iPhoto Library from the backup drive complete because it had been recreated using the OS 10.9 and wouldn't work with 10.6.  I would have to create a new 10.6 iPhoto Library and move the actual ORIGINALS, from the backup into it.   He actually had the path to the iPhoto library shown on my Air to the point of >Pictures >iPhoto Library > ORIGINALS.
I didn't question how he got the path to the point of > ORIGINALS and figured that it wouldn't take too much to do what he suggested. Now I can't find how to get to point of seeing the ORIGINALS in the path. When I go through the path >Pictures >iPhoto Library, the next column shows me the iPhoto Library icon and the info re size, creation date etc.
Can anyone advise how to get to the 'ORIGINALS' in order to import them and does anyone have any further suggestions that might help in completing this procedure ?
Thanks, in advance, for any assistance available.
p.s. is there any way of looking at a Time Machine backup and finding what O.S. was present when the backup was produced ?

Rather than do that, which means starting over from scratch, losing all your edits, organisation and so on, why not simply use iPhoto Library Manager to revert the Library to the older version? Easier, less destructive.
The instructions on that are here
If you really want to start over: you can access the Originals folder simply by going to your Pictures Folder and finding the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.

  • Backing up iPhoto library from an external drive using time machine

I have a rMBP that is rapidly running out of storage.  I purchased an external USB drive to store my iphoto library on.  I have a time capsule that backs up my rMBP.  If i include the external drive in the time machine set up, what happens when  it backs up and the USB drive is not connected?
Any one have a similar setup that can give some advise i would appreciate it.

If i include the external drive in the time machine set up, what happens when  it backs up and the USB drive is not connected?
Well, since the drive is not connected, any changes since the last backup will not be backed up.
When you reconnect the USB hard drive, Time Machine will backup your Mac and the USB drive.

  • How can i move my Iphoto library to an external hard drive?

How do I move my Iphoto library to an external hard drive?

    Here's a worflow for that:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using  iPhoto Library Manager

  • My Macbook Pro 2014 ran out of battery while mid-slideshow. Now the slideshow won't skip through photos and I can't figure out why? Macbook Pro 2014 13-inch Intel i5 8GB RAM 128GB flash, iPhoto library is on external HDD

    Macbook Pro 2014
    13-inch
    Intel i5
    8GB RAM
    128GB flash SSD,
    Integrated Graphics
iPhoto library is on external HDD
I was in a slideshow, with around 1,911 photos in it. About halfway through, my Macbook ran out of battery. Now when I restarted and charged the Macbook and reopened iPhoto, the slideshow won't advance through photos, and I can't figure out any reason why it would do this.
I thought it may be corrupted, so I deleted and reinstalled iPhoto library, iPhoto itself, and disconnected and reconnected my external HDD.
This didn't work, the photos still won't advance.
I don't know any reason why this would be happening, and there is ample space on my internal drive.
I'm happy to provide more information if needed!
    Many Thanks,
    James

Make a few tests, James, to narrow down the problem and find out, if the slideshow is corrupted, your iPhoto Library, or settings in your account.
To test, if only your slideshow has a problem, create a new slideshow, just for testing. Just use "File > New Slideshow" and add a few photos. Does this slideshow play correctly?
If the test slideshow does not play either, create a new iPhoto Library. Use the File menu in iPhoto: File > Switch to library > Create New. Import a few photos and create a slideshow.  Does it play?
If even a new library does not solve the problem, test in a different user account (see this document:  Isolating an issue by using another user account - Apple Support):
This process involves creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.
Create a new standard or admin user account in Users & Groups preferences.
Use these instructions for OS X Mavericks.
See these instructions for OS X Mountain Lion.
See this video, or these instructions for OS X Lion.
Optional: If you have any specific files you wish to test with, copy (don't move) those items to the /Users/Shared folder in the Finder.
Log out of your current user account by choosing Log Out from the Apple () menu.
Log in with the new account you created.
Attempt to reproduce the issue you were seeing in your regular user account.
After you have completed testing, log out of the test account by choosing Log Out from the Apple () menu.
Log in as your regular account.
After you have completed all testing with the test user account, you may want to delete it. You can delete an account in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.
Note: Prior to deleting a test account, make sure you are completely done with it. If you have files in the Guest User you wish to keep, you should copy them to the /Users/Shared folder .
If you should find, that slideshows only play in a new user account, post back.

  • HT1229 Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD? Will it work the same way after moving onto an external HDD? do I then need to have the external connected at all times, even when I don't use iPhoto?

I have a macbook pro, but the amount of pictures I have now exceeds 500GB
I want to have all the pictures in iPhoto, so I could see them and edit them in iPhoto.
Which means... I need the iPhoto file folder in an external HDD to use iPhoto that way.
Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD?
Will it work the same way, as if the iPhoto folder is on the internal drive?

    yes
    yes
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Transferring iTunes Library to another system, from a Time Machine backup

Transferring iTunes Library to another system, from a Time Machine backup
I have a large iTunes library that is backed up via Time Machine on an external drive.  I would like to hook up that drive to another mac and just transfer the music that is saved in the backup.  I don't want to restore anything else, simply transfer the whole iTunes library.  Is this possible?  If not, what is the best way to do something like this?
    Thanks!

You should be able to restore iTunes and iPhoto files if the Lion system was running the same version of those applications that you'll have on the Snow Leopard system.  However, you won't be able to restore files for applications like Mail, Address Book, or Safari, as the versions of those won't match.

  • How do you move your iphoto library to an external hard drive--step by step because I dont even know the basics--Help!

I have no more space on my hard drive and my computer keeps freezing.  I would like to move my 10,000 photos from IPHOTO to an external hard drive but dont know how to do it.  I am reading answers to similiar questions but dont know how to do even the simplest instructions like "after you quit Iphoto how do you copy the iphoto library from our pictures folder to the external disk????"  Ugghhh I have no idea how to do this.  Please help a busy mom of three who sits here for an hour and just spins her wheels!!!

Make sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled), quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library to the external drive, depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library command to select the iPhoto library on the external drive
Fully test the library. Once you are sure it is totally ok delete the old library - test one more time prior to emptying the trash

  • Installed iPhoto library on NAS external HDD - now I cannot access it.Help.

I initially had no problems with accessing photos from iPhoto but now when I open iPhoto I get a message "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." and then "Your photo library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup."
I cannot even see the individual files when I access the share on the NAS drive whether I mount it as smb or afp.
Any way to recover my photos?

    Simon
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • If I store files in the TimeCapsule's own HD, will i be able to use time machine to back those files up also? (specifically can i store/run my iPhoto library from TC and then have Time machine also make/include a backup up of the iPhoto library?)

I curretly use my iphoto library from an large external HD (2 tb)  and then have time machine back it up to my airport extreme (which has an external HD attached, 500gb ) Long story short... I am running out of storage space on the 'large external hd 2tb'. however, I still have space on the HD (500gb) that is attached to my airport extreme.
    My question is,
    1. If i move my iphoto library over to the HD attached to my airport extreme, Is there a way for Time Machine to also back this up.
    2. same question only applied differentliy  = If i purchase a  Time Capsule. and store files on its HD. (specifically an iPhoto library) would time machine create backups of this 'locally' stored data on its own TC HD?
    TC = time Capsule
    HD = hard drive
    TM = Time machien

    1. If i move my iphoto library over to the HD attached to my airport extreme, Is there a way for Time Machine to also back this up.
Sorry, but no. Time Machine cannot backup from network drives.

Again, sorry, but no. Same reason. The TC's internal HDD is treated as a network drive.

  • I need to know how to get a particular photo from my iPhoto library that is backed up on Time Machine.

I just backed up my whole computer on an external drive with Time Machine.  I wanted to clean off my old files from my computer, but I didn't want to erase them until I knew I could go back and get particular items from the back-up.  For example if I clean out my iPhoto libraries, how would I go get the libraries once they are on the external drive.
I want to clean out my photos without having to put them all on CD's.  Can I use an external drive as my drive I save everything to not just for a system back-up.  Or is there a better way to store my photos rather than CD's so I can clean-up some memory space on my internal drive.

No, No, No, a thousand times, no!
Pardon the dramatics, but don't do that.  Time Machine will, sooner or later, delete the backup copies of anything that's no longer on your Mac.
Plus, of course, if you delete the originals, you no longer really have backups (backup = an extra copy in case something happens to the original).
Your best bet might be to get a larger internal HD for your Mac.  Second best would be to get another external HD, format it for a Mac, and move some stuff (perhaps your entire iPhoto library) to it, and let Time Machine back up both your internal HD and the new external.

  • I just moved iPhoto (9.6) library to EHD from my MBP. I had been running time machine backups. With the library now on an EHD, will time machine run a seamless backup next time i connect  (if i allow TM to see other drives)?

I have MBP 2012 running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6. I run Time machine backups daily.
I just moved iPhoto library to EHD and removed the iPhoto library on MBP. I have enabled external drives to be accessed on TM. The next time i run a TM backup with the EHD  connected, will TM run a seamless backup or will it not like the fact that a backup is now spread across two devices where it used to be on only one?

By default EHDs are excluded for TM backups - you have to go to the TM preferences ==> options and remove them from the excluded list
And you need two disks connected -one for your iPhoto library and one for the TM backup - TM will backup all hard drives that ar not excluded - you do not need  multiple TM backup disks

  • How do i move some of the folders in iphoto library ( to an external HDD) without actually having to move the whole library and without affecting the albums i have already created in iPhoto.????

I have been storing my photos separately in folder and importing it in iphoto without actually copying them. Now to free some space in my hdd i want to move some of those folders to an external hdd. How do i do that without affecting my iphoto albums. ????

Well, strictly speaking, you can do this. Two ways. One is tricky:
How are you at editing SQL databases?
    This user found a way:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3216539?tstart=30
But tread very carefully - get it wrong and you'll hose everything. Make a back up first.
    The other is expensive:
Purchase Aperture, and if you have the latest versions of both these apps, then you can open the Library with Aperture, and use the relocate Masters command.
Or, in the end, make a managed Library. A Referenced Library is more work for zero gain.
