If I restore the system from Time Machine, are folders not in Time Machine erased?

Pretty much as per the title. I was messing around with my Internet connection (DNS issues) and now can't get online at all, and can't find other ways back online, so I was going to restore from Time Machine: but I've got some folders that aren't in Time Machine (mainly temporary files like podcasts, iTunes U, videos and the like). If I do a system restore from Time Machine, it looks like that material will be erased. Will it all disappear, or will the folders not in Time Machine be left as is?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, a time machine restore will erases the volume and then restores.

    Hello buddyacw
You would have to restore the iPhone. Download the latest version of iTunes and then follow the steps in the article below to get it working again.

  • How do you restore the system from a backup file that you created previously

I have a notebook, Pavilion g6 - 1031TX running windows 7 64bit OS, and ran the backup utility a few weeks ago before running a full system recovery to attemp to fix an issue - this issue was fixed by warranty, and now I need to recover everything from the backup files, I have run the restore executable in the folder and it created another folder on my C: drive (System recovery files), how do I use this to restore the system to its previous state?

Unfortunately, the backup utilty portion of Recovery is not optimal solution for restoring many files.Unless you know exactly where they go you are stuck. Most of the important stuff such as photos, music, etc will be in the 'Users' folder under your user name. You will have to manually move them to correct location.
A better option in the future is Windows 7's backup app in Control Panel.

  • How do I restore the system from an older computer

I've seriously messed up the permissions on my 2010 MacBook Pro and need to revert to the older Mac which I recently replaced.  All the important data files are backed up but the system is not working correctly.  The Time Machine drive is messed up too, so I can't use that.
How do I do this?  It's basically a system install.

  • ITunes could not restore the iPhone, because backup copy is corrupted or is not compatible with restorable iPhone. What do I do if I want to restore the iPhone from the latest backup?

I want to restore the iPhone from a backup, but can not as much as they wrote iTunes
"iTunes could not restore the iPhone, because backup copy is corrupted or is not compatible with restorable iPhone."

Bummer. Sounds like the backup is corrupt...
    Do you have a question?

  • After formatting my HD and eventually restore my system from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?

I have a Time Capsule (4th Gen) and my backups on it, I need to completely erase my hard drive. My question is: after formatting my MacBook HD and eventually restore my system (OS X 10.6.8) from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old* backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?
*(-and to the newer backups- if I had not restored my system from the last backup).
    THANKS

That's a good question. Technically, Time Machine should make a new backup but not erase any old backups. But if there isn't sufficient space on the backup drive, then I'm not sure if Time Machine will simply warn you or just go ahead and remove old backups to make room for the new ones.
In any case, the new backup should have a different backup folder on the backup drive. That's my understanding. You can learn more at pondini.org.

  • I had to restore my system from a time machine backup. It Failed...

I had to restore my system from a time machine backup. It seemed to go alright up to it asking me to resart to complete the installation, but it would not boot. It forced a panic screen that told me to force quit my computer and resart which did not resolve anything.
Now I have installed the original Leopard 10.5 but I used to have 10.6.8 on it. How can I get it back to 10.6.8? or do I have to buy it again?
Any ideas why the restore failed?
    thanks,
    R.

It seems you had a kernel panic (see attached link):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742
Regarding upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6.8), you will have to install the disk you used originally.  If you have lost it, then you will have to get a new one.  The Apple online store sells them for about $29.  When you install Snow  Leopard, you should then do a Software update.
    Ciao.

In technical support, sometimes you have to make educated guesses. I'm sorry that you were offended.
iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her.

Let it alone. No one can tell how long it will take as that is a function of your data.

You need a computer with iTunes installed to regain use of your iPod.  Unless you have the iPod backup file from the syncing computer all you can do is to restore the iPod to factoery defaults/new iPod.  You will also need to place the iPod in recovery mode is you restore the iPod on other than on its syncing computer.  For reoverymode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore

  • How do you restore the settings from a previous day?

Cleaned up some old files yesterday, now Outlook MAC 2011 will not load. Can I restore my settings (from time capsule?) from yesterday?

    Melissa,
By not using Time Machine, you dispense with the only native means for the system to offer any help in restoring your lost/deleted files. ( I am guessing you don't have an alternative regimen for backups either) There are services that offer data recovery, at some expense. However, to raise the odds that the job may be possible, you have to stop the moment you realize your mistake, so as not to overwrite the disk space that the deleted files may, or may not still occupy.
There are also deleted data recovery software apps that may help. But their usage requires advanced expertise, and is not something you want learn-while-doing. These utilities are also not necessarily inexpensive.

  • How can I fix my system preferences so the system preferences window don't freeze up every time I open it?

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix a System Prefrences problem? Every time I try to open system prefrences I get that little color wheel over the System Prefrences window, and I am not able to change any system prefrence options or click on any options in the window. It just freezes up. I have iOS Lion 10.7.4 version on a 2012 Macbook Pro i7. Right now my screen saver is just a blank blue color, and I am unable to set any other photo from my photo library to the hpome screen picture even without going throiugh system prefrnces. I have tried Disk Utility>Verify Disk Permissions, and that did not work. I have also tried Disk Utility>Permissions Repair, and that did not work either. Can anyone tell me another option to try because I am unable to open Time Machine to repair to an earlier date because that window freezes up also. Does anyone know any other options? This Macbook Has been doing this sort of thing since I took it out of the box brand new 4 months ago, but it fixted itself before the Macbook help coverage was expired so I never bothered to call Apple about it. Now it just freezes up and never works, I can't change my system time out I cant change any system prefrences on my Macbook Pro. It really ***** bad. Also another symptom my macbook has right before this problem accours is my screen saver on my computer will automatically be swithched to that Galaxy screen saver all the sudden when I turn my computer on then when I go to change the screen save back to a picture I had on my computer the system prefrences just freeze up. Please let me know if you know what I can do. Thanks.
Also I am Unable to open Dock Preferences and i get the frozen screen color wheel Just like on System Preferences.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
