Illustrator collapses swatch panel?

Hi guys,
I have an issue with Illustrator CS6, running on 10.6.8...
I'll have an object selected, and I'll be using my Swatches panel to edit the colour of the object's fill, let's say. Then I will want to edit the colour of the stroke – as soon as I hit the stroke square in my toolbox, the Swatches panel disappears and the Color panel jumps out instead. I have to close the Color panel, and then reopen the Swatches every single time.

Focus always switches back to colors. You owudl have to not use auto collapse, or minimize as example below.
(moved swatches and colors over to the left to snap as a 2nd column)

My Illustrator does not allow me to change colors using swatches panel. Help pleas.

Few days ago I started having strange problems with my Illustrator CS5 application. I am using MacBook Pro with Intel Processor. After major update on the Mac OS few days ago I noticed I can not change colors in my drawings using swatches panel. The function on my Illustrator CS5 stopped working. When I select object and try to change its fill or stroke color using fill and stroke from the options bar above work space, none of the swatches would work. The are there how ever nothing hapends when I select them, the color remains the same.The same thing happens if I try to use the swatch panel, I select the object then I try to select new color from swatch but the fill or stroke does not change. I can only change color on my drawings using the color panel but that is not useful for me since I need to get precise colors using approved color swatches ether from pantone library or approved by client.
The other strange thing is my selection tool does not deselect when I click outside on or of the artboard, the object remains selected until I reselect another object or use the keyboard short cut to deselect it.
I have tried various options to resolve the issue from deleting and reseting preference to completely uninstalling and reinstalling Illustrator CS5. I even installed back my old CS4 version because I had to complete a project and the same issue is happens there as well. I also reset the application using Time Machine from few months ago when it was working correctly. What happens when I reset or reinstall the app, it works for about 10 min correctly as it should and and then it reverts to the same problem. I am out of options and do not know what else I could do to fix this. Right now I am working on my old Mac tower G5 and CS4 where everything works as it is suppose to, but I really need to get this fixed. Can any one help or has solution for my problem? Please.

Swatches are included in the New documents profiles that are included in the "Profile" menu. Have you been selecting a profile from there deliberately? What happens if you do so now - select for instance "Print" or "Web"?
If documents still don't contain swatches and you're certain you didn't change the document profiles, then they might have been corrupted.

Custom Swatch Panel

I want to create a custom color swatch panel for Illustrator. But I cant figure out a way to add swatches to the panel and drag/drop them into file.
Kindly guide me to an example or the steps required to build such a panel. I'm new to flex sdk

There's no example or good set of steps for doing that. Getting a list of swatches in the document is fairly easy (AISwatchListSuite) but turning that into nice thumbnails of the swatches is actually something AI doesn't provide. We have to internally render them off-screen and convert them into our own image class for rendering in our UI (we use Qt). I don't know what you'd have to do to turn that into icons for CS Extensions, since I've never used that.
Drag & drop is a whole other problem. That'll be entirely CS Extensions though. Assuming you have them rendered nicely in your panel, and the extension API lets you do things like drag & drop into the file, it would be fairly easy to apply the specified swatch to the object. I'd be surprised if that D&D functionality was there though. But I know very little of the CS Extension Manager so don't trust my opinion on that!

Custom Swatch Panel Closes on Launch CS5.1

I've been experiencing a frustrating, bizarre situation recently. I have a Persistent custom swatch library load for an instant upon startup, then within a second it closes itself. I have to open the Swatches panel manually, then my custom library loads again *but* also opens the Links panel. I have ensured that my custom library is saved in the correct location (/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS 5.1/Presets/en_us/Swatches), and confirmed that 'Persistent' is checked in that custom library. I even tried saving my workspace as a different name.
This is an annoyance more than anything else. I've tried deleting my preferences but I'm still getting no love.
Any ideas? Thank you for reading, and in advance for any assistance.

We don't have any way to extend the trial. It is possible you may have other software installed which has interferred with the trial process. Which operating system are you using btw? Did you receive any error messages during the install process?

There is no "Libraries" in my Adobe CC Illustrator's "Window" panels.

There is no "Libraries" in my Adobe CC Illustrator's "Window" panels. There are "Brush", "Graphic", "Swatch" and Symbol Libraries at the bottom of the Window Tab. The Adobe shapes overview assumes it's there. Where do I access the Libraries Panel? We have a cloud corporate account. Does that have something to do with it?

It takes an act of Congress to get our IT dept. to update anything much less re-install something. I will try. I do know it's the latest version of CC. So I'm baffled that the menus would not display appropriately.

Swatch panel colouring stroke

I cannot figure out why when I click on an object and attempt to change the fill colour in the swatch panel Illustrator colours the stroke and not the fill.

Because the stroke is in the foreground? What happens if you tap the x key then try a color?

Swatch Panel is NOT persistent

In CS3 I used to have my Pantone Solid Coated swatch panel permanently open (by selecting persistent). I've noticed in CS4 that everytime I restart Illustrator, I have to reopen the panel.

How to customize size of "Swatches" Panel in Photoshop CS 4/5?

1) Using the edge of the bottom right hand corner you can drag a swatches panel to a smaller or larger size.
The picture above was taken when the swatch panel's dimensions counld not be further dragged down into a smaller size. I want to reduce the swatches panel's dimensions to only show one row of small colour thumbnails to increase space of my workplace within Photoshop CS5.
2) Also, I would be eternally thankful if any one of you could tell me how to assign shortcut keys for custom colour swatches that I select using the eyerdropper tool and save into the swatches panel.

You can collapse your panels down to icons, arrainge them in a single column, and dock them to the side of the workspace. Clicking on the icon will open the panel, and clicking again will collapse it back.

Why does my new saved swatch not appear in the Swatches panel when I open a new document?? Thanks :)

I can create a new swatch and save it. It appears in the Swatches panel. But when I close (or save and close) the document, then open a new one/existing old one, my new swatch is no longer in the Swatches panel!?
I have tried finding the answer on forums/Adobe books etc but to no avail - it is driving me mad!!!

That's because a new file defaults to the "default template". You can save a file as a custom template, then open your template to use the custom swatches.
I'm not saying I like this. It's just the way it is.
Any file can be opened as a "swatch library", as well. If you've created files with custom swatches and want access to them, go to: Swatch panel flyout menu>Open Swatch Library>Other Library, then find the file containing the swatches. It will open as a "Library" and you can click swatches to add them to the current Swatch panel. You can also set the Library to be "Persistant" by going to "Library Panel flyout menu>Persistant". Then that Library will open anytime you open Illustrator.

Unable to save a gradient to a swatch panel

Help, I was always able to do this before. (should be simple...) I made a gradient and just want to save / add it to a Swatch Panel that I've already defined and saved. I used to be able to drag (I think) the gradient into the desired Swatch Panel and then 'save the swatch again' It won't let me do this today even though I just did it last night! :-(
I'm working on a Windows 7 machine and I am using Illustrator CS5....

humm, thank you for the reply. I'm not sure what I did last night then (and many other times, I still have others saved too) I have a Swatch panel with all the gradients I saved for one project. I can open a new document, call up that swatch panel by choosing to view a USER DEFINED panel with a name I saved it as...and all my gradients are right there....so I'm entirely confused now. All I did was drag the gradient over to it and resave it???
Frustrating. I saved 3 gradients just last night and it worked perfectly.....
Now I can't drag the new gradient over to the panel I previously saved. When I try to it beeps at me.
In case I'm describing this totally wrong I've inserted a pic of the Panel which I've named TES GRADIENTS and even circled the gradients... there all 3 of them are. How did I do that LOL....

Just a bit more control over Swatches panel...

"Select All Unused" - great command, "Add Unnamed Colors" - sometimes also useful, but shouldn't you expect "Hide Unnamed Colors" too?
And couple of things I really miss here:
"Find Duplicates" and "Sort by...". I always try "to keep things clean and simple" as much as possible, unfortunately, sometimes I get files from other designers with a real mess there... and in a Swatches panel too. Hundreds of colors, dozens of duplicates, some of them obvious, some - not. Everything scattered here and there, and... no way to get things a bit more organized.
Well, no more words: just look at the Links panel and its options! Things are much better here...

I agree. I like Illustrator's option of being able to sort my swatches myself with color groups. I too have the annoyance of having everyone else's swatches mixed in with mine when I syncronize my book documents. I just have to be sure to name all my colors. Having the swatches panel be more like Illustrator would be a big help in keeping things "clean and simple".

I can't convert Spot Colors to CMYK in the Swatches Panel

I'm having an issue where I can't convert spot colors to CMYK in the swatches panel. Currently to fix I have to copy elements using the spot colors in to a new blank document, then convert them, then paste back into the original document. Is this a bug?
Also if I try to delete the spot color, it doesn't fully delet the swatch.
I'm using Illustrator CC 17.0.0

1. Double click the swatch in the swatches
2. In the swatches options window select "Process Color" in the "Color Type" drop down menu
3. Deselect "Global"
4. Then change "Color mode" to CMYK if it is not already selected.

Swatches Panel Colorbook Colors way off in AICS6

Example just for illustration:
I open a new AICS5.5 and AICS6 doucument and fill a rectangle with PMS 485 (Bright red) from the PMS Colorbooks. I understand that the new + Books in AICS6 are LAB. The color in the actual rectangle in AICS6 looks very close to a PMS 485 in a swatch book (yeah!). The color rectangle in AICS5 looks a bit more orange, but not horribly off.
My problem is with the SWATCHES PANEL ITSELF. In AICS6 all the swatches appear really off and generally desaturated? For instance the 485 swatch in AICS6 looks like a "rust" color (certainly not a true red of any kind). I realize that you should never rely on a computer monitor to make Spot Color decisions, but really, do they need to display this far off? What can the color look so good in the document and so lousy in the swatches panel? If I change the document mode from RGB to CMYK, should not the swatches panel change to match?
Here is a cut-n-paste from what I am getting - looks at the measured values in Photoshop.

this is what I get pretty close you might have different color settings and you might have different previews turned on like overprint preview though I do not see any difference when change to overprint preview but I think there is something else going on with your CS 5. Did you check you actual color book to see which version is closer it looks to me that your CS 5 version is more like PMS Warm Red which more vermillion.

How to automatically open and close collapsable spry panels?

I designed a collapsable spry panel in DW to open and close automatically, with a 10 sec delay, unless person clicks on tab to close immediately.
The spry panel opens automatically, but will only close if i click the tab.
Is there a way for the collapsable spry panels to close automatically?

I feel certain the answer I need is in the reply you posted here, but I need a little more help to know exactly what to do. I am using a collapsible panel to show and hide a series of onload panoramic photos near the top of my page. What I want is for the collapsible panel to be open on some pages and closed on others and I want the animation of the panel closing to be seen too. I'm thinking this should be achievable with some sort of onload trigger or something. Currently I've gotten close to what I want by referencing two different .js files (one for the "open" panel state and another for the "closed" panel state), but this doesn't show the graceful animation of the panel closing.
