Illustrator CS4 .pdf files - two issues

Issue 1: In Bridge I cannot open an .ai or .pdf file in Illustrator by clicking a thumbnail. Is 'drag and drop' into Illustator from Bridge the sole method? (apart from not using Bridge).
Issue 2: After exporting an .ai file to .pdf (Acrobat Pro CS4) a 'File Association' alert is shown. In previous versions of Illustrator the newly created .pdf file would open up in Acrobat for review/email forwarding etc when the 'preview in Acrobat' was selected... I am confused about the correct settings in the File Associations Panel in Bridge (Edit/Preferences/File Handling) under Illustrator it shows Illustrator and in the drop down InDesign and two other programmes I do not use. If someone can advise me how to add Acrobat to that drop-down I would be most grateful.

Don't think it could be corrupt preferences. I've tried trashing the prefs as well as reinstalling CS4.
I've noticed that it has something to do with an object that has a stroke. If I create a new box without a stroke then then my initial measurements are correct. However if I add a stroke my measures change according to the stroke weight. I've looked for ways to turn this off, but can not seem to find anything. I think this problem has something to do with the over all appearance of things.
Which lead me to another issues I'm having.... What happened to the "Filter" menu? When I try to round corners on a rectangle it applies the round corners as an effect "appearance". I have to expand the appearance in order to the corners to actually be rounded. Why did this change? I want to change the actual object the first time I create it and not take extra steps. This can waste a lot of time. I think this same issue is what is going on with the stroke weight. I don't want my object size to increase when I increase my stroke weight. If I did want this, I would create outlines. Can this be turned off? If not, I will have to continue using CS3 until Adobe fixes this problem.

  • Printing issues from InDesign CS4 pdf file

    Good morning,
Could you help explain and possibly resolve an issue I'm having with an InDesign CS4 pdf file where the text and image drop shadows (40%) are printing as solid black blocked shapes from a large format printer. The file encompasses 1 overall image, 1 image with drop shadow, 3 text frames with drop shadow effect applied to the text and 1 group set of simple rectangular and ellipse objects with a glow.
My colleagues in graduate school experienced the same with their files and the output bureau's rasterized the pdf file in Photoshop where it printed out with good resolution. Shouldn't this be resolved first in InDesign rather than rasterizing the file?
I appreciate any help and insight you could offer myself and my colleagues.
    Thank you, Kathryn

The printing service uses Acrobat 8 Pro and HP large format printer. My InDesign CS4 document is in the color mode of RGB and color type as Process. I saved it as a pdf file using the standard settings as follows: Preset: High Quality Print, Standard: None and Compatibility: Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3). Are there options I should be paying more attention to when creating the PDF file? Also, I was reading up on Peter Spier's response links.
This brings me to the next question...I'm creating a photo book for grad school with approximately 40 pages of images (RGB, 300dpi) with feathered drop shadows. What would be the best settings to use when exporting as a pdf file for printing services?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Illustrator cs4 preferences file corrupt message

I use Illustrator cs4 for windows and after I restart my computer when I open Illustrator cs4 a box pops open telling me that the preferences file is corrupt and it is using the default settings. This only happens when I restart my computer. If I don't restart my computer I can open and close the program over and over with no problem. Could there be some program conflicting with Illustrator?

I did a clean install before installing CS4 and the AI prefs issue
still occurred. CS4 is basically the only thing I have installed and
    this happens. It's very weird.
This happens to me on two separate machines.
I've ran the file compare utility and you look at the differences in
the text and neither of them really make sense to me. How does it even
    know the preferences are corrupt?
This is a very frustrating situation as I can never enjoy the Recent
Files List, and that every now and then when I want to change up my
preferences I have to go through a process of unlocking (read:
disabling Read Only) and backing up the file, opening AI changing
prefs, etc, and relocking. The only way to keep from getting the
corrupt prefs is to mark the prefs file as Read Only, but it totally
disables recent file lists and gives the hassle I just described.
What's odd is that the "working" prefs file can get corrupted when I
try to change preferences. I'll back it up first to be careful, then
unlock the one in AI, open AI, change a pref, close it and lock it,
and next thing I know it's corrupt again. So then I'll try putting the
backed up locked prefs file that was working and it will be corrupt
too. That may not make sense as I've described you, but I assure you I
understand it completely. Something is definitely wonky!
It's funny because I see a lot of suggestions to some people's issues
that say "you might have corrupt prefs, try moving the folder/deleting
it". Our issue IS the corrupt prefs!

  • Illustrator CS4 in Snow Leopard Issues

I have a logo file that I created in Illustrator CS4 on an iMac running Snow Leopard and it does not display some of the text layers when saving for the web or saving as an Illustrator CS3 file or copying and pasting into Photoshop CS4. Basically the text layers are just standard text using Adobe Garamond Pro (Italic and Regular) fonts and white text on a black background. In the original file both text lines look fine but when I try to save using one of the other methods above I no longer see the 2nd text line. So, in effect I can't create the JPEG or GIF that I need from this logo. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Steve

Maybe not a cs4/snow leopard issue but an overprinting issue?
Is the white text that goes away set to overprint?

  • Illustrator CS4 mac file won't open on a PC

    Hi,
I'm trying to open a .AI file made on Illustrator CS4 for Mac on a PC at home and it won't open. Do the two versions talk to each other or I'm just losing my time? On my PC I have CS4 as well.
I've tryied saving an EPS for CS4 and CS3 and it won't work either.
    Can anybody help?
    thanks

    Ok, guys, sorry.
I had to wait to get the lines of the crash. To be more specific, then:
    Mac: Illustrator CS4. Using a Mac OS X 10.4.11
PC: Illustrator CS4. Using Windows Vista Ultimate.
About transferring the file, I tried sending it by e-mail form Entourage (with "Encode for any computer, Apple Double") and also saving it on a pen drive. Saved the file as a CS4 .AI
About opening the file, I tried to open it by clicking on the file and dragging it on the opened Illustrator window.
Error (The same for other files):
Cant'open the illustration. The illustration contains an incomplete or garbled object description.

  • Can't import Adobe Illustrator CS4 .ai files

I recently upgraded to Adobe Illustrator CS4. When I attempt to paste an .ai file into iWeb I see only a black rectangle. This was not the case with CS3 AI. It seems that I must now first convert the AI CS4 file into a .pdf or .eps before importing to iWeb. Also, QuickLook does not display either CS3 or CS4 versions of AI.
    Have others encountered these behaviors?

Are you referring to a Photoshop file with an alpha layer? iWeb and iPhoto do not support those. Nor does several other Apple applications like Preview, Quicklook, etc. Send a feature request to Apple via:

  • Illustrator CS4 big files

    Hello,
I've encountered issues with illustrator cs4 when creating banners or posters of 1mx2m, especially when exporting to jpg it says not enough memory.
There are a number of problems with blurs even on small file sizes such as A4 documents.
I never had these problems with CS3.
    System specs
    Mac Pro Eight-Core 2.8
    Snow Leopard
    12gig of Ram
    360gb main drive
    1Tb secondary drive
Now I don't think its my system and another thing I've noticed when using activity monitor to see how much of the system is used, it's virtually nothing, very low, 0.8%, etc, thats the cpu, physical memory is hardly none, vm isn't much either with many other apps open, it hardly uses any of my system, so where is Illustrator taking it's power from, as its not using much from my system?
    Thanks

Check effects >> document raster effects. For some large scael graphics(eg: tradeshow) you don't need 300 dpi.

  • PDF File Format Issue

I have a PC in which I have InDesign CS4 installed.  I am trying to create a book cover using a preset template that is saved in a pdf format.  How do I get this program to open this type of file?

Sorry, InDesign has never opened PDF files. You can choose File > Place. You could put the template on its own layer and reduce its opacity so you could use it as a template for your project.

  • Regarding PDF files open issues

Hi, I am Anurag Tiwari working as a Portal Administrator for Sunchemical Portal. We are facing some issues while opening PDF documents through portal. The PDF documents are able to open without logon to portal, through the 'http' link associated with the document, even though we cleared the PTCache then also it's happening the same. Please can you raise this as a high priority call to provide a better solution to us?Kindly advice us and please revert us back on this. NB: Our Portal version is 4.5, SP1.Thank you.Best Regards,Anurag TiwariPortal Administrator

    Paul,
These PDF files are opening at any domain doesn't need any authenticated to portal. One important point is that all our files including the pdf one is in the https response. But other is not opening, only PDF causing this problem. We have checked this with version 5.0.2, this is not happening.
e.g: https://<myportal>.com/portal/PTCache/<file name>.pdf?ID=<document ID>&PTToken=pv_conflate&Name=.pdf, this is the generated URL syntax. Whether the naming convection for PDF documents are single/multi-word with space/underscore between them, doesn't effect.
We thought due to PTCache this might happen, so we cleared the PTCache, still it persist. If this is a configuration issue then please provide us a remedy for patch up.
Our file server and portal server are different. Please help us in this issue; we are not getting any solution on this.
Further, let me know if you need more information.
Thanks & Best Regards,Anurag TiwariPortal Administrator

  • Apache pdf file permission issues

I have a intranet site that I need to publish some pdf files. I am using a G5, Leopard and apache 2 and PHP. My PHP is just providing a link the pdf documents, but when a user clicks on the link they get a message "You don't have permission to access /PDF/filename.pdf on this server." I don't think there is any apache configuration to change but maybe I am wrong. Does anyone know what this could be?

Clearly Apache doesn't have permission to serve the files (or the directory it's in).
Check the permissions on the file. it needs to be readable at least by the user _www. The directory it's in also needs to be readable as well as executable (Apache can't look into a directory that isn't executable).

  • Email PDF file name issue via output determination - order confirmation etc

    Hi,

    Thanks,
    Jai

    Hi Jaideep,
You can change the mail title at Output determination.
T/code NACE--> Application > Outputtype> Select O/P --> select Mail title and texts --> specify your text( with language) in "title" .
Whenever Script send via e-mail the text you have entered will apear as mail title.
    Hope this may help you.

  • Save As PDF file size issues

I am currently using Word 2008 to produce a club newsletter for email distribution. The Word (.docx) file can be up to 2.4MB in size. When I use Print > Save to PDF the resulting file can be as large as 12MB! I tried using the CUPS-PDF virtual printer option and got a file 26MB is size!!
A friend used his Windoze machine to print to PDF and got the file size I was after at just over 1MB. I also tried the Adobe Online "convert to PDF service" and got file sizes lower than 1MB.
What is going on with the Mac OSX conversion? How can I get smaller PDF's without having to shell out for Adobe Acrobat Pro?

    Peter Ongley wrote:

This may not help or may degrade any images in your document, but try this: Open the PDF file in the Preview application. Invoke File -> Save As, then set "Quartz Filter" to "Reduce File Size", give the file a different name, and save the file.

I've imported PDF files but the inherent transparency just comes in as opaque white. Any thoughts?

Convert to a format with a proper alpha channel like PNG or TIFF or PSD.
