Illustrator CS6 (Yosemite) hangs on open

Recently I'm experiencing this annoying situation which I cannot solve on my own.
Situation: MacBook Pro Early 2011 model, problem free so far. Running Yosemite for a while now, latest version. Daily user of Adobe CS6 package. (no CC)
In Adobe Illustrator CS6, when clicking "Open" (or command O), the spinning beachball occurs leaving me no other option than to force quit the program. I cannot open any file in Illustrator. However, double clicking a file in the Finder does work, must have something to do with the dialog box? Indesign and Photoshop are working fine by the way.
Tried so far:
— Safe Boot
— Deleting P-ram
— Deleted and reinstalled Ilustrator
— Java updates
— disabled Dropbox
— disabled Default Folder X
— Removed FontExplorer X Plugin
.. no luck so far. Can anybody advice me on how to solve this?
Thanks!

Ok...Finally got my iMac back. I realized there was some glitch with my system (only able to open illustrator from a new user account). I chose to move over to the new user. After many hours of creconfiguring my prefs and such it is back. Runs mean and clean again. I did discover an almost horror when my photos library and images was not there, not working. I used a third party "Anytrans". I was able to get all my library images back form my iPad. Whew!
Thank you all for your help and encouragement. I am back and running well again. Needless to say have learned alot.

Please help! Illustrator CS6 started trying to open all of my complex.ai files with a "Text Import Options" box as if they were text files, and they are not opening!  Help!

    Hi Monika,
I have spent the last two or three days trying to do what you suggested.  I uninstalled Adobe 6 from Windows.  Some files that CS6 placed on my system during installation remained, including fonts and .dll files.
I had to abandon the Cleaner Tool you suggested because in one screen it allowed me to specify removing CS6 only, but on the following screen it only gave on option to remove ALL Adobe programs.  I could not do that because I didn't have the serial number handy for CS3 in case I want to reinstall it at some point.
I tried to get technical help with the Cleaner Tool problem but no definitive help was available, so I reinstalled CS6 again without having the benefit of the Cleaner Tool.  I tried to get the serial number for CS3 so I could use the Cleaner Tool but spent 2 wasted hours in chat.  Even though I had a customer number, order number, order date, place of purchase, the email address used AND 16 digits of the serial number, in two hours the agent couldn't give me the serial number.  After two hours I had nothing but instructions to wait another 20 minutes for a case number.
Illustrator CS6 is still trying to open some backups as Text and otherNone of the problems have been fixed.  I have tried to open/use the .ai files in CS6 installed on another system and am getting the same result, so I don't think the software was damaged by the cleaner.  The hard drive cleaner is well-known and I've run it many times without any problem to previous versions of Illustrator or any other programs.
When I ordered, the sale rep promised good technical support and gave me an 800 number, but after I paid the $2000, I learned that the 800 number she gave me doesn't support CS6 and hangs up on me.  Adobe doesn't call it a current product even though they just sold it to me about 3 weeks ago.
Would appreciate any help you experts can offer.  If I can't solve this, the last backup I can use was from June and I will have lost HUNDREDS of hours of work and assets that I cannot replace.
Exhausted and still desperately in need of help...

  • Illustrator CS6 Freezes/Hangs on SaveAs

When I open a dwg file in illustrator or another AI file that I've exported from Rhino & try to 'Save As' in Illustrator, the application freezes and I have to kill it via task manager.
This problem started mysteriously about a week ago.  I've spent countless hours troubleshooting & also tried a fresh install, but no dice.   Please help!

    Hi guys,
Ok - fingers crossed, but the problem seems to be solved.
It was very strange bc when I opened up AI from scratch, drew a bunch of random shapes & tried to Save As, it worked fine.  However, when I opened any file where the vectors did not originate from AI & tried to Save As, AI froze -- the AI save dialogue would not pop up after I input the file name and selected file destination (in the explorer save window).
In another forum entry (Re: Illiustrator CS6 crashes when creating New File)  someone suggested changing the default printer, so I tried that & oddly enough it worked!  Some of the printers my computer is hooked up to are networked & some aren't - I just switched my default to a non-networked printer.
If someone from Adobe could please explain what Saving a new file has to do with computer printer defaults, it would be really great to understand & might shed light on other similar issues..  thanks!!

  • Illustrator CS6 stopped working upon opening

Just over a month ago I had installed the trial version of Illustrator CS6 to try it out. I had also done the same with PS CS6.
I decided to buy and so bought the whole Web and Design collection. After ordering it I decided to remove the old trials to ensure a simpler installation of the whole package. So I uninstalled these the other day using the Program add/delete in the Control Panel and then deleted the folders that contained Adobe products except for my Adobe reader etc.
I had a few issues with Flash player after and a script in Word so I restored my computer to an earlier date and then just removed the bare minimum.
Now I have just installed the new package and everything works fine. Serial number, then logging in with Adobe ID then installing.
The issue is if I open Illustrator it opens but within seconds blanks out and a window pops up saying it has stopped working. I hoped that I could go into the Computer's add/remove to see if I could fix but none of the new programs are even listed.
I need to get some graphics done and really need to be able to open Illustrator ASAP.
If it helps, the exe file is in the support file folder which I did not know it should be in.  Is there a way of fixing this easily? Like a fix program that could diagnose the issue?
Thank you to anyone who can help me.
Please note, all the other programmes open: PS, Fireworks, Dreamweaver. However Bridge also doesn't.
I also tried running as administrator and this doesn't help.
    Rachel
Just an afterthought. Could I uninstall and then reinstall? As it is on the same computer I assume Adobe would know that I wasn't trying to use the serial number a second time on someone else's computer. I just don't know what else to do. The live chat is not available until Monday and I really need to use Illustrator over the weekend to prepare a design for a client.

    I am sorry, Windows 7, x64.
I ended up taking the trial download of Illustrator out of my recycle bin and reinstalling only that. It opened. However I clicked quickly on file before it had a chance to close as I read somewhere that can break the glitch. Right now I am not going to close it until I finish the work just in case.
I checked the Event Viewer but it did not give a reason.
Thanks. Sorry about the short sight. I was a little panicked due to worrying about not being able to get the project done that I wasn't as informative as I usually am.

  • Illustrator CS6 Crashes after it opens and click on anything!!!

Every time I open illustrator and click on the pen icon, open a document, etc etc it crashes. I am using a Mac computer OS X version 10.9. I only have downloaded fonts from dafont.com on this computer. Nothing else has been installed or downloaded.  I have tried opening the program while holding CMD/OPT/SHIFT,uninstalling illustrator and redownloading but it still does not work. Can someone please tell me how to fix this problem? Below is the error message I get:
    Process:         Adobe Illustrator [34729]

Please try removing the newly added fonts and see which one causes the problem. One of the newly added fonts might be corrupt that Ai is not able to read properly. Removing these should help unless there are any other things impacting the launch.

  • Illustrator CS6 (Mac) crashes when opening large documents with drop shadows

I have a Macbook Pro ver. 10.6.8 i7 Core, 8 Gb Ram, and I am running Adobe Illustrator CS6.
I have a document that is 18" x 42" and contains drop shadows. It was created using CS6.
When I apply a graphic style (gradient and drop shadow) It has a progress bar that says "Drop Shadow" and it fills up and freezes. I recreated the document, and I am having the same issue repeatedly.
In order to do what I needed, I had to ungroup the letters recieving the graphic style and apply it to each letter individually. If I try applying it to more than one object, the freeze happens again.
I saved the file I created, and now I can not open it. On load it has a progress bar that says "Drop Shadow" and it fills up and freezes.
I can open the same document in CS4 on the same system with no issues, it takes less than 5 seconds to load.
    What is going on?

That's a good idea, but it was already set at the lowest resolution, so no luck, still freezes.
The worst part is that when you open it in CS4, it does that weird layer grouping/clipping mask thing with the layers so you can't easily edit the file, if I save the file in the legacy version CS4 and open it in CS6, it retains the strange layer grouping. Although it does open it still doesnt solve my problem because now I just have a horrible to manage file.
PS has anyone figured out how to fix the layer grouping issue with legacy (Cs4 and below) Illustrator files?

  • Updated Illustrator CS6 now crashes when opened

I updated my Illustrator CS6 through adobe applications manager and now it crashes when launched

    CH,
There is a number of (increasingly unpleasant) things you may try (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when it is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences, and more or less correspond to the suggestion by sistermonkey):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer;
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

Is there any solution available to open such files without installing the fonts?

  • CS6 PhotoShop hanging when opening PDFs - help?

    Hi all,
I'm IT support to a team of studio artists who are having some issues with our newly upgrade CS6 Premium suite (Mac OS 10.6 + Mac OS 10.8).
Situation: (Mac OS 10.6 problem) someone will be working on a 2GB network file, and tries to open a PDF to import elements into the current document. Machine has 12GB RAM (7 allocated to PS, 2 free, the rest used with OS/other apps).
After choosing the PDF file, the window will pop up and become 'stuck' in front of all other windows, all other programs. Activity Monitor describes PS as hung (red text) but Finder still recognises it as working (but will not show the program title in the menu bar). It is possible to CMD+TAB between programs, and the pallets recognise mouse-over actions but are unresponsive to click. Again, "Import" window is on top of all other windows, and can be moved but does not respond to mouse clicks.
Activity Monitor also shows intense disk activity (60-80MB/s) on local volumes. It appears not to be network activity though (while hanging, 50-150KB/s). RAM allocation doesn't change during this time.
If you can be patient enough, the system often recovers PS, but this can take a few minutes.
The extreme disk activity implies that PS is processing on the scratch disk, but what or why is it doing this, and is there any way to disable it. Would it have anything to do with Background Save or Autosave? Something to do with purging memory?
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    James D.

Hey Chris or anyone else from Adobe - is there any chance we can get this looked at slightly more in-depth?
This issue is re-occurring across our four Mac Pro workstations of various ages and operating systems.
Why is Photoshop writing out the contents of the RAM when I open a pdf?
We're working with machines that have 8-16GB worth of RAM and having to write that out to the scratch disk every time you open a PDF is very unproductive use of our time.
It's nice and easy to blame everything else like fonts or drivers or operating system or graphics cards or RAM or Acts of God, but how about for a second we assume that Photoshop is the cause, look at how we'd test for it and ultimately get it resolved.
This is the sort of issue that the average consumer would probably just ignore or deal with, which could explain why you guys don't believe this to be a bug. Seems to be picking up a lot more attention on here.
    Thanks,
    James.

  • Illustrator CS6 gets error when opening AI files - Mavericks 10.9

I installed Mavericks yesterday ... lucky me, to be guinea pig in the office for this upgrade.
Am having issues with Illustrator. First it wouldn't open and had to runt he Java install, that took care of that. I am able to make new files without problem and open EPS files, but cannot open existing AI files UNLESS going to File > Open. If I double click on an AI file I get the error "The appliation can't be found"
After looking for similar issues I am not finding anyone else reporting a similar problem. I am not running any 3rd party plug ins. Any ideas???
    Thanks for the help.

    Issue:
Clients logging into File Services over SMB with OS X 10.9 experience hanging connection upon login attempt.
    Root Cause:
OS X 10.9 now utilizes a new SMB2 stack written by Apple.   Apple's SMB2 implementation is not compatible with many other SMB2 NAS products on the market today while Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 works just fine.   In short, its an Apple bug.
    Workaround Option 1:
To force your connection to be SMB1, simply type cifs://servername instead of smb://servername when connecting to a Windows or NAS share.  This is by far easier and requires no real configuration changes.
    Workaround Option 2:
To force all connections to be SMB1:
    Open A terminal window
paste in the following line followed by the return key(should be all on one line):
    echo "[default]" >> ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf; echo "smb_neg=smb1_only" >> ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf
    What the command does:
Creates a file called nsmb.conf  in your  home directory at the path ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf.
Adds directives to force SMB connections to use the SMB1 protocol.  This is slower but stable.
    How to remove the workaround:
    Open a terminal window
paste in the following at the prompt and then hit the return button:
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf
    Notes:
Its a good idea to restart your mac before trying to connect to your storage again. This will clear any hung SMB processes from previous attempts to connect to your storage before implementing this workaround.

  • CS6 DW hanging when opening files - Windows 8.1 running MS Defender

When opening files in CS6 DW it sometimes hangs for up to 4 minutes before opening the files.
Also, CS6 DW and Fireworks crash frequently on my PC.
I'm running Windows 8.1, MS Defender and my PC is a Pentium i7 with 8GB of RAM
Any ideas what I can do to stop these things happening? It's really starting to impact on the productivity of my day.

You seem to be implying that when you switch off MS Defender, it works?
If not, we'll need a little more info.
Does the hang happen with all files in all sites, or just certain files?
If it happens with just certain files, could you please share the code to one of those files? A link to an online page would be best, but pasting the code into the forum can also help, just don't use email to send the code to the forum, that won't work.
Have you tried any of the standard troubleshooting steps as of yet (Deleting Program Cache, Restoring Preferences, Cleaner Tool Reinstall)?

  • Illustrator CS6 suddenly won't open multi page PDF.

I've been working on a PDF project for a few weeks now and it's been working perfectly. However yesterday, I was suddenly unable to open the PDF as a whole and instead, I was prompted to select a specific page to open. The strange thing is that other PDF files that I've been working with will still open with multiple artboards but this file won't. Does any one know what's casuing this?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

If you check the option "Preserve Illustrator editability" in the PDF dialogbox, the PDF will contain the complete Ai file. If you don't (e.g. by selecting "smallest file size") then it won't contain the native AI data. Then you will see what you see.
Unfortunately, if you don't have a backup, you cannot get the native data back.

  • Illustrator cs6 "this file cannot be found" problem when open file from network

I used to install the trial version of Illustrator CC on my desktop and then when the trial run out I decide to go with illustrator CS6 instead, So I decide to buy &
install Illustrator CS6 on our desktop and everything seem to be fine except
the problem is our .ai file is located on the network shared drive of the design team,
When we try to open the file from the network drive with illustrator CS6, it said "This file cannot be found"
    - we try to copy the file from network drive to our desktop and file can open without problem
    - if we directly double click the file from the network drive to launch the illustrator CS6 with that file. It's also fine, no problem at all.
    - but if we open the illustrator CS6 first and try open.. and then browse to that file on network, then "This file cannot be found" happen again.
    - Illustrator CS6 have no problem open file in the local harddisk.
    - Illustrator CC never have this problem open file in our network drive, try reinstall the Illustrator CC trial again and it can open without problem
    - I try using Adobe CC Cleaner tool to remove everything before reinstall the Illustrator CS6, still no luck.
    - Try remove the Adobe relate folder in user/user/Appdata and then reinstall, still no luck
    - Try right click and open with --> Illustrator CS6 , yes if we double click the file directly it's ok, but as mentioned if we open illustrator first then browse for the file, the problem happen.
Did I miss anything to fix it ?

the same thing happend to me,

on my laptop the same folder with hebrew name, I cannot open files.

  • Can't open PSD file to layers in Illustrator CS6 for editing?

I need to edit a Photoshop PSD file that has layers.
I believe vector lines can be edited in Photoshop but I only have PS Elements and can only edit the text.
I do have Illustrator CS6 but when I open the PSD file it will not open to separate layers, even if I choose this in the open options.
    Maybe Illustrator cannot do this?
    Can anyone advise please?

Although I can export as PSD from Illustrator - will PS read the layered files though?
If you set up the file accordingly: yes.
You have to take special care of some stuff. Search for it on this forum or the manual. It has been discussed here.
    hemmickreef wrote:
    What about EPS?
Forget about EPS. And especially in this context.

Yes, but only clipping masks. And only simple paths.
