Illustrator drops a filled path when saving as pdf or exporting as an image

Hi everyone,
I am running AI CS5 on an i5 iMac with 8GB memory.  I am having an issue where Illustrator is leaving out a filled path upon exporting or saving the AI file as a pdf or bitmap image.  The workaround is to open the AI file in Photoshop, and save it from there, and there are no issues; save that my vector image and text has now been rasterized.
The screenshot below shows my AI file as it exists in Illustrator:
And this is after exporting as bitmap or saving as PDF (opened in Acrobat):
Notice the white fill above the DTP mark; it has been left out.  I tried to import the file into InDesign and export it has a PDF from there, and the same issue happens, which makes me think it is a problem with the native AI file.  I have also copied/pasted the file into another document and the same thing still happens.  Any help that you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
Bill

It was marked for overprint somehow.  Got it!

  • Illustrator CS4 and CS3 freeze when saving a PDF as an AI file

I'm trying to pull apart a couple of PDFs into layers to import them into After Effects. I do this all the time and it's a pretty standard thing which I haven't had any trouble with before, but for the last couple of days whenever I try to save the PDF as an AI file, the damn thing freezes - I get the washing machine of death (I'm on Vista), the program goes greyed out and I have to restart it, losing all the changes. I've tried the following, none of which seem to make any difference:
    - Saving to a different drive (C as opposed to an external USB drive)
    - Trying to open the PDFs in CS3 rather than CS4
    - Trying a couple of different PDFs
I can't reinstall Illustrator as I'm not at the office until the new year and don't have the disks. The PDFs are small (300k or so) and so it shouldn't be their size making the machine hang, surely? I've attached a sample. Specs are - dual core Dell M6300 laptop, 2.6GHz, 4GB RAM, Quadro 1600 graphics.
Any ideas would be very gratefully received....

Sorry I haven't replied in a few days (I'm at my parents' house for Christmas, so not the ideal place to sort out Illustrator problems )
This is REALLY weird. I was wondering whether Illustrator would be able to save PDFs (which are after all basically the same thing as AI files for this purpose) to get around the problem that way. I tried: it saved the thing fine. Next I tried saving what I'd just saved as a PDF, as an AI file. It saved it in a flash without any problems. (This is with the trashed prefs file - I haven't tried reinstating it, yet.) I've just loaded up a 14Mb AI file, and saved it again without trouble.
There's only one thing I can think of that has been changed since the last time I tried this, when Illustrator wasn't working. This is something which was definitely affecting Word 2007: I've deleted a couple of network printers that were on nonexistent IP addresses. (Word wouldn't load anything, even the most basic of docs - it just froze; washing machine of death, grey screen, etc.) The default printer is thus now a Canon USB thing, which isn't plugged in either, but which Windows seems happy to carry on without. Word seemed unable to continue with the network printers installed, as presumably it was trying to contact them and failing. Could Illustrator have been falling into the same trap??
Anyway, whatever the problem, it seems to be working OK now. Thanks both and hope you have a merry Christmas and New Year period.

  • Illustrator CC 2014- Unknown error when saving as PDF with Printer's Marks

I've been getting an error message (bellow) when I save a ANY of my AI file as PDF with Printer Marls (Trim Marks etc).
All fail attempts were files with: No transparencies - No effects - Simple Type (tried outlined and live) - Simple shapes.
    I tried:
    - Trash the Adobe Illustrator Settings folder
    - Reboot the application
    - Reboot computer
    - Rebuild file
    - Replace fonts
Please help. I'm a print designer and that's vital for my line of work.

Without system information and details like what PDF preset you use nobody can even begin to guess.

  • Illustrator 6.0 vector paths, when opened in Illustrator CC are now all broken into segments?

Illustrator 6.0 vector paths, when opened in Illustrator CC are now all broken into segments at key points (ie. a circle, has become a series of 4 quarter circle lines. Has anyone experienced this and is there a quick fix? I still have both Illustrator versions installed and can go back to use the original files, however I'd like to upgrade smoothly without having to redo all my vectors!

That is strange sounds like what happens when you open a die built in autocad, in illustrator. What happens if you paste a CS6 path into CC?

  • When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF?

When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF? Currently when I have a Framemaker book that I want to save as a PDF, I choose Save Book As and then choose PDF for the file format. A dialog box comes up in which I can choose the Bookmarks tab and choose which tagged content I want to be made into bookmarks in the PDF file. What if I would rather have the filename of a document rather than the chapter title be a bookmark in the PDF? Is that possible? Where would I choose that option? Thanks!

There are two ways that you could do this. You can either use postscript text frames and enter the correct pdfmark entries to show the file name with the corresponding actions (i.e. where to go in the PDF) or you can use hidden text in FM and the "Filename (Short) " variable in a unique paratag to be picked up by FM's bookmark creation.
To go the pdfmark route, see http://www.pdflib.com/fileadmin/pdflib/pdf/pdfmark_primer.pdf for details and also consult the Adobe Pdfmark Reference manual (http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdfmark_reference.pdf).
The hidden text route would use FM's Color Views to specify a colour as Invisible. This will make the content visually disappear from the screen (and any output), but FM will still be able to read the contents of any text that is coloured with the Invisible colour(s).
    1. Pick or create a colour that you want to be invisible. [Magenta is usually a good bet and stands out visually].
    2. Set that colour to be invisible in View 1 and visible in View 6. [you can use the shortcut <esc> v 1 and <esc> v 6 to toggle between the views.]
    3. Create a paratag to use for the filename and set the font colour to use the invisible colour.
    3. In the title of each chapter file, drop an anchored frame that is set to be outside of the text frame [so it won't interfere with any other content].
    4. In that AFrame, insert a text frame and use the invisible paratag defined in step 3.
    5. Insert the Filename (Short) variable in that text frame.
    6. Repeat steps for all files to be included in the bookmarks.
When creating the PDF bookmarks, select only the paratag used for the invisible colour.
Don't forget to toggle the View to be invisible (i.e. <esc> v 1  - this also works at the book level for all files in the book).

  • When saving a pdf the objects on the page appear offset of the page boundries.

This happens mostly in illustrator but it just happened again to me while printing a .ps booklet out of indesign and converting to a pdf using distiller.
    See the image below:
The left shows my InDesign Document. On the right is the pdf that results from the save. As you can see the page boundaries are being completely disregarded when saving the pdf and everything is equally shifted down and to the right.
Here is an example of me having the same problem in illustrator:
As you can see there is sometimes zero correlation between what is on the artboard and what page the objects end up on in the pdf.
This problem also has another strange symptom, it seems to have to do with dragging images from firefox onto an artboard in illustrator. The image is place automatically in the center and all objects in the file move together in one direction. see before and after photos below:
    Before:
    After image dragged in:
You can even continue to drag images in and it will move in the same direction the same amount every time:
    I'm running Adobe CS6 on OSX 10.9.1.
    Thanks in advance!

In so many words: We can't know. You have not provided any details about your exact settings, what version of Acrobat, your placed images, color settings, color profiles and a million other things including perhaps providing your test fioles for inspection by other people. That aside simply ask in teh relevant ID/ AI/ Acro/ PDF forums. This place here is a dead place and only meant for general sales, install and activation questions, not specific workflow questions.

  • Gaps in-between  livepaint shapes when saving to PDF

Im using CS6 and when saving to PDF my live paint objects have a slight gap inbetween the shapes in the live paint object. They do not appeare in the illustrator file or when saved as jpeg, png, etc only PDFs. I have been using Illustrator for a couple years now and this has not happened in previous versions I've worked with (CS3, 4, and 5)
    Thanks

The thin lines around the rings are an artifact in pdf preview. Thi si the saem problem  http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/thin-white-dark-lines-stitching.html
You may be able get rid of them by changing your acrobat settings such as turn off smooth line art.

  • CS4 - Missing buttons in dialog when saving as pdf

    Hi Folks,
I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this problem, or perhaps it's just an issue with my installation.  I get occassional strange issues when saving as pdf, though i think it happens in other cases too.  In the dialog (after choosing the file name and clicking save), some of the buttons are missing (see attached file).  The title bar is also sometimes missing the title, but in the attached file it isn't.  Alt-tab functionality in windows is impaired when this is happening, I can't launch ctrl-alt-del, etc.  Lots and lots of strange issues until i manage to kill illustrator and start again.
This doesn't only happen when i'm trying to save as pdf - sometimes it happens upon launch of illustrator.
anyone else have these crazy issues, or just me?

Thanks for your reply.  I actually don't think the problem has anything to do with actually saving as a pdf per se, since it happens in other situations too.  You'll notice that the Save buttons at the bottom were missing in the first image i posted.  I'm posting another image of how the dialog *should* look.
Remember, there are also a myriad of other problems that come along when this happens, indicating a bad interaction with Windows somehow.  Alt-tab functionality is messed up, i can't use ctrl-alt-del, i can't close the program, etc.

  • How to keep crop marks when saving as PDF

In Illustrator CS5, I have some artwork which has 3mm bleeds all around.  The printing shop requires me to provide the artwork with the bleed and also the crop marks showing as well in PDF format.  But whenever I save as PDF, Illustrator doesn't show the crop marks I have made.  I've tried selecting print trim marks in the save as dialog boxes, but this only puts marks right at the edges, after the bleed areas, making the trimming marks incorrectly placed.  I'm pulling my hair out!!  Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong.
    Thanks in advance!!
    Joe

That didn't work for me.  In fact, the only way I could get it correctly was to enlarge my artwork to extend over the artboard and then when saving as PDF to tick the printer trim marks boxes.  Not as easy or straightforward as with a crop mark, but it seems to be working now.
Thanks anyway for all your input!

  • Fully embed fonts when saving as PDF

    Hi,
I am saving an Illustrator file as PDF and in the Save As PDF settings dialogue pages, no matter what I do regarding fonts, the final PDF file always outlines some of the fonts instead of embedding it.
(I tried various settings for "Subset fonts when percent of characters used is less than XX%" including 0%, 1%, or 100%, it didn't make any difference)
Is there a way to force Illustrator into embedding fonts when saving as PDF?
    Thanks.

    Monkia/Steve,
I followed up on another thread and it turned out this one joins the discussion there.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/6246758#6246758
I made some additional tests and we concluded there that Save As PDF and Print to PDF from Illustrator do not work the same way. It doesn't solve my problem but it certainly helps move in the right direction...

I get an error message when saving a PDF to PNG. JPG and TIFF works, but no PNG.

  • Incorrectly coloured text when saving to .PDF using Photoshop CS4

I am using Photoshop CS4 on Windows 7, and have designed my own business card.
When saving to .PDF to send to printers I am finding that a small section of text is saving with a white section to it, for example out of the 3 lines of text on the card the bottom left hand corner of the & sign I have in the design is coming out white, the rest of the text is a golden colour.
I have tried searching on this forum and on google but can't seem to find anyone with my actual problem so unsure where to go.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks

Well, you could change the native text color instead of using layer styles, could you not?

Or make the Type and Hyphen layers into a single Smart Object and clip a yellow layer to it.

Or if you would like some help provide some information - there are no mind reader supporting this forum and we can only work with the information you give us - right not that is "it does not work"
iPhoto has no "save to PDF" function - exactly what are you doing? and what exactly do you want to do?

  • When saving to PDF in Preview . . .

When saving to PDF in Preview, how can I eliminate the borders that are automatically added?  Thanks.

Here's the screenshot.  Note the white border.  Another party has pointed out that the way to fix it is to create a custom paper size (Print Dialog --> Paper size --> Manage custom sizes --> set up a custom 8.5 x 11 page with zero borders all around.).  It works!  H/T to Kirk Slowe.
