Cannot open .AI files, I have run all the updates but still having to use Fireworks to open AI files.

That message means exactly what it says, more or less. The three possibilities are it isn't an InDesign file at all (we see that here a lot), there is a .idlk lock file in the same folder (delete it), or the file has been damaged (frequently happens with flash drives).
If you open the file in a plain text editor like NotePad or TextEdit (it will look like gibberish) and paste the first few lines here we may be able to tell you if the file is damaged or not an InDesign file.

Could you answer a few questions to help us better understand the issue:
If you are trying to open the files by double clicking them, do they give any error??
Have you tried to drag a file into indeisgn, if yes what happends when you do that??
Is there any error message that you get??
Also if you create a new files in InDesign CC does it show up as grey like the cs4 files or do they open fine??

Hi Qt 10.1 will no longer open .wmv files after upgrading to 10.7.4. I have the latest version of flip for mac. They will opwn in QT7 pro but does anybody have a fix for this problem at all? Thanks in advance.

Are you using Adobe Reader or Preview to view the file? Can you get the sender to resend the file?

Can't open project files after upgrading to FCE 3.5.1

I bought a new MacBook Pro and sold my PowerMac, so I bought the 3.5 upgrade to FCE. I was using 3.0 before on my PowerMac.
I copied my project over, but when I try to open it it just gives me a dialog box with "General error" and an OK button.
How do I get my project open???

Make sure you have the latest version of Quicktime
Quicktime is up to date.
I solved the problem with the help of Tom Wolsky. What finally worked was taking the project file to my wife's C2D iMac, opening the file there, saving it as a 3.5.1 file, and copying it back to my MacBook Pro.
The weirdest things to me are:
1) That there was any problem at all to begin with on my MacBook Pro C2D
2) That there was no problem on my wifes iMac C2D
3) When Tom Wolsky opened and saved the file in 3.5.1 format for me it didn't work, but that worked when I did the same thing with my wife's machine.

Problems opening PDF files after upgrading file server to 2012 R2

Hi,
At the weekend we upgraded our main file server from Windows 2003 to 2012 R2.
Since the upgrade, users (including myself) can only open one PDF document at a time from the file server. If I double click a PDF file, it opens like normal, however If I double click another PDF file, the acrobat reader flashes (in task manager I can see another instance AcroRd32.exe starts and then exits) but the second document doesn't open.
If I close the first document down, and then try and open the second one, then it opens with no problems.
This only affected opening files on the new file server, opening multiple files on a local drive is fine.
If I disable 'enable protected mode at startup' then I can open up multiple documents from the file server. I'd prefer not to have to do this.
The users are using Acrobat Reader 11.0.10 on both Windows 7 64bit and Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop.
Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? And does anyone have a workaround other than disabling protected mode?

An update...
The new fileserver has a different name than the old server. We have a CNAME alias pointing the old name to the new name.
I only get the problem when accessing the PDF documents with the old name, when accessing via the new name, everything works as expected.
However there are lots of shortcuts and other other links to the old name, so finding a workaround would still be good.

[Solved] service script file or directory not found but can open.

Hey all,
After struggling with creating a systemd user service + timer, i finally got it work. When i needed to install my arch again, and did the same steps as i did last time, my service file says it can't find the script at the ExecStart.
The weird thing is, i can open the script with nano and can see it in the file manager so i don't know where to look now.
These are my services files and timer located in /home/username/.config/systemd/user/

Description=Sync grive every 5 minutes
[Timer]
OnBootSec=2min
OnUnitActiveSec=5min
Unit=drive_sync.service
[Install]
WantedBy=default.target
[Unit]
Description=Sync grive
[Service]

And this is the script called in /etc/

I enabled the time with systemctl --user enable drive_sync.timer and it's running but after 5 minutes i check the status of drive_sync.service with systemctl --user status drive_sync.service and it says: "Failed at step ExecStart=/etc/drive_script.sh: No such file or directory" But this file really does exist.
I also ran sudo chmod u+x /etc/drive_script.sh but this didn't work.

That message looks a little strange, but you also removed all context. In your previous thread (which you should probably mark as solved now?) you were pointed to a sticky about posting complete commands/output/error messages, but you are (still) not doing that. Just put the command and its output in code tags in your post. Don't do any rephrasing, translating, interpreting or other editing to obscure details (unless it's a password or something like that).

Does your user ("username" or "jordy") own that file? Otherwise that is not enough (but the error would mention something about permission issues). And /etc/ doesn't seem like a really appropriate place for a script and if it's only for a specific user, you might put in somewhere under ~ (but that is something you can consider after you get it working with the current location).

I tried again with a clean start. Removed the previous services and such and created them directly, So i am sure i own the file. I created the script in my home directory and then copied it to /etc with sudo cp.
Sorry about not posting the error in codes. I didn't know i had to put the error also in code tags, only the scripts.
this happens after the timer has reached it's execution time and executes the drive_sync.service:
failed at step exec spawning /etc/drive_script.sh: no such file or directory

Why doesn't FCP open a file that QT Pro and iMovie can open?

I have since mp4 (h.264) files that I created in QT Pro 7 exactly the same way. FCP can open 5 of them but gives a "general error" for the other two. QT Pro and iMovie can open and play all 7 just fine. What's the problem with FCP? I would expect it to be MORE flexible given its price. Instead I'm about to find myself using iMovie instead of it (imagine my frustration).
Any suggestions?

Dunno - are they protected files? (trailers often are)
How big are they?
H.264 is a "delivery" format and is not considered an "editable" format. iMovie is likely converting it to DV upon load, so that may be why it can use it. You could do the same before loading it into FCP.

Cannot open downloaded files from Firefox or IE, but can in Google Chrome?

When I download files in Firefox and IE, it either fails to complete downloading them stating that they have some sort of virus, or they show complete but none of them actually save. When I try to open the link in the downloads window, they do nothing, and right clicking shows "Open" and "Open Containing Folder" are greyed out. I do not have any of these problems with Google Chrome, and I would rather use Mozilla. I have tried many basic fixes I have found and nothing seems to work.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files.<br />
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

Try quitting the browser and restart it.
If that doesn't work, restart your computer. If it STILL doesn't work, download a different browser like mozilla or Chrome... or if you are using mozilla or chrome, try Safari

Pages won't open a file after upgrading to Yosemite.

I exported a Pages file from a new Mac Air computer to a Mac Mini that uses Yosemite 10.10.2. I opened the document and edited it, which I then saved, but now I can't open the edited file. Apple introduced a new document architecture with Pages v5, that is not backwards compatible with Pages '09. With Pages v5.5.2 (Yosemite) installed, a simple double-click on a Pages '09 document will default open it in Pages v5. Once you save, or Pages autosaves this document, it is no longer directly compatible with Pages '09, without first exporting it to Pages '09 format. Pages v5 documents do not contain index.xml files, and Pages '09 documents do.

Very slow times on iBooks when open PDF files after upgrading IOS 5

Hi,
After I had upgraded my ipad 1 to the new iOS 5 every time that I open a PDF file inside iBooks it takes, at least, one minut. After it works fine and I don't have special problems when I'm reading but on finishing it and returning to the library it takes one other minute. It's annoying!!
Inside the library I have about 200 pdf files.
Before my upgrading all worked fine!
Anyone has any suggestions?

Usually related to file associations in Windows. Right click on the PDF and select the Open With option and select Acrobat. Be sure to check "always open with."

Won't play mp2 files after upgrade to 7

Hi, I had QT pro 6, and updated to 7 in a regular recommended software updates session. I tried to play .mp2 video files and I get -5000 error. I can't find out what the error means? I just says it can't play this file. Why can't QT 7 play a simple mpeg2 file? the actual file name is like "whatever.mp2"
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
OK, I found the problem. If you set a folder in "shared documents, specifically, shared videos, you don't get full privilages. It makes no sense at all. Now I moved the files to "my documents" and set that one to share, and it allowed me to access and play the video files on my powerbook over my wireless network. It makes no sense at all, because the settings are the same for either folder. It is just a stupid xp thing. If I could just afford to get a nice imac G5 or new duocore, I could eliminate my pecee. I only use it for watching tv (ati all in wonder card), recording tv shows, and using it as a server for my saved video files. I use my powerbook G4 and ibook G4 for everything else. I LOVE my macs, they work without problems! I wish apple would start a lay-a-way program so I could put a little down each week toward an imac. thanks for the help guys

Raw file settings missing from smart objects in tiff files after upgrade to CS6

Yesterday I was using Photoshop CS5 and RAW 6.4 (?) in a Windows environment.
When editing photographs, I generally open the photo in Camera Raw, make development changes (ie exposure, contrast, etc) and then open the developed image as Smart Object in Photoshop. I then clone, add layers, masks, etc. and then save the final image as a tiff.
Yesterday, I upgraded to Photoshop CS6 and RAW 7.0. Now, when I open my tiff files and Smart Objects in the RAW editor, my exposure, contrast, and black settings are missing (reset to zero). My graduated filter settings are also missing.
It seems to me that the embedded sidecar data in the tiff / Smart Object is not being read correctly.
How can I update my old tiff / Smart Objects? Re-developing thousands of photos is impractical.
NOTE: As a side note, I opened a RAW file with xmp data (not stored as a tiff/Smart Object) and had no problems.
