Make sure you read the system requirements. Also install Rosetta if you want Power PC applications to run.
Snow Leopard Purchase
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
If your computer isn’t compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion.

i dont even know if im in the right community.
anyway, the thing im having trouble with is syncing my notes. im pretty sure i have the most recent software for the iphone 3, i think. however, i've never been able to sync notes from the iphone to my laptop. i havent even had the option before. i do now, but on the info tab for my iphone, the one that pops up when it's plugged into the laptop, it has the option to check the box next to sync notes with... however, there's nothing on the drop down menu, so even with the sync notes with.. option selected, nothing happens.
i have 350+ notes, so emailing them to myself is out of the question. any help would be much appreciated!!I deauthorized and then reauthorized my iTunes and this seems to have done the trick!

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
I just puchased a used 2008 MacPro 2.8 ghz 8 core and it has Mountain Lion installed on it. I want to go back to Snow Leopard because it is a better stable OS for using Final Cut Pro 7. 1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART
info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files. -

Software updates don't upgrade your current operating system to a new one, you have to purchase a newer operting system if you want one.

I have just installed Mountain Lion over Snow Leopard, I now can't open Photoshop?
Hi everyone, I have just installed Mountain Lion over Snow Leopard. The installation went smooth and woks well. Now I find that Ican't open either Photoshop CS or Microsoft Word. I upgraded in order to install Lightroom 5, obviously there is now an incompatability, is there a work around?
If that is the original Photoshop CS, and Word 2004 or earlier, then they won't open because Lion and Mountain Lion do not support PowerPC apps. They must be Intel code. Snow Leopard could run them because it included Rosetta, a PowerPC to Intel (and back) interpreter.
You have a few options.
1) Go back to Snow Leopard.
2) Update your apps to compatible versions.
3) If you have Mountain Lion because newer apps require it then:
a) Install Snow Leopard Server (currently being sold by Apple for $20) in a VM such as Parallels, and then run your PPC apps in the VM.
b) Install Snow Leopard on a separate partition and boot to that version of OS X when you need to use those older apps. -

I can't get past the installation screen of OS X LION. I have wiped the laptop clean and it won't let me install the new OS X mountain lion that I have already purchased
Reinstall Lion as Barney has suggested, then download Mountain Lion. If you want a clean install, stop the Mountain Lion installation and then make a bootable drive. You can then erase the disk and make a clean install. Lion Diskmaker will build the bootable drive for you.

I think I finally got rid of them. I found a Dec 2011 PhotoStream in the iPhoto list (on the left of the screen). While I couldn't delete the "folder", I could move all the photos to the trash and empty the trash. Now, let me tell you, the photos I wanted to delete were not in that PhotoStream, but it seemed to do the trick. Then I made a new photo stream and so far so good.
Next time I'll try your method. Probably works, I was just desparate to get rid of the old photos.

Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard on 6-year old iMac?
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac which I bought in January 2007. It has 1GB memory and 2.16 GHz processing speed. Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion - or perhaps more importantly, should I? Given the age of my iMac, would Mountain Lion be too much in terms of processing speed, etc?
Probably not to Mountain Lion but to Lion, yes. However, you will need to increase memory to 2 or 3 GBs depending on what your specific model supports.
But if you wish to run Mountain Lion you need a newer model.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

i bought a macbook pro back in summer 2012 and it came with mountain lion but since then Im having a very slow Internet connection. I have one router at my home. my other PC works fine with the Internet even my iphone 4s is way faster with same wifi connection. when I download a TV show on macbook from itunes its takes about 40-50 min to download fully but on my phone or PC it usually takes about 18 mins. and also when I try to watch a hd clip on youtube, I need to put on lowest quality in order to watch it without lagging or stopping midway.
