IM's from people not on my contacts

Over the past week I have been receiving several IM's everyday from people I don't know. I really don't understand how this is possible as my security settings are set so that only people on my contacts lists can call or IM me. Yes I have double checked my security settings to make sure updates hadn't changed my settings and they are as I've always had them.

Are you sure that they are Instant Messages and not contact requests (which now appears in the IM window/section)?

not certain of the logic behind this procedure, but it actually work in numerous similar cases. Just switch to offline status for at 5-10 seconds, then revert back to online. Then proceed in changing your privacy settings to desired options and the new settings should stick.

I want to have one default ringtone for calls from people who are not in my address book. I would also have a distinct ( different) ringtone for those people IN my address book.

try a reset of iPhone and then a restore,best, as new and if it then functions correctly try restoring with your backup

If you restored for an iTunes backup were the apps in your iTunes library? They have to be for app data and in-app purchases to be restored.

Okay so I barely use the calling/phone app (the one that comes on it) on my iPhone but most of the calls I get are from random people who I do not know who have the wrong number asking for the same people! I block them all I can but they're not always the same number there's different numbers all the time it's extremely annoying and driving me crazy, the one person left a voice mail again asking for the same person so I called them back and they denied they ever called I kept telling them I got a voicemail from that number and they kept saying no one called from that number. I literally cannot take this anymore. I remember seeing somewhere when I was setting up my phone where I can set it so people cannot call you if they're not in your contacts list. Is there a way to do that? If there is could you please let me know and how to do so? I seriously really need this please. I have an iPhone 4s that's on ios 7.1.2 if that helps any. Thanks so much.

If you did not erase your apps and data before getting rid of your old phone, try using Find My Phone and erasing everything remotely. See if this works.

Someone is probably sending spam with your address forged on the To: line. Could be one of your old contacts with a Windows machine has a virus that's doing it. It's also possible your e-mail account has been hacked, though I'd think such a hacker would be a bit more purposeful.

Hi, I've been having a problem with my contacts recently. Ever since I got my phone, I saved a few important contacts, however received messages and calls off people who were not in my contacts. I saved these from the messages, and calls but none of these saved contacts have appeared in the contacts app. It's really very frustrating. The contacts have been saved into my phone, as I can find them under spotlight search and in recent calls etc, they just do not appear in my contacts app. Can anyone help me sort this frustrating issue out? Skype does not provide for a way not to receive contact invitations, or to "opt out" of receiving contact requests.
