Im trying to update my Iphone OS but it says: " you have purchases that have not been transfered to your itunes library". I dont want to lose anything I've purchased, I dont want to cross reference every app and song to see if its in itunes or not. help

II have an iPhone 4. I want to update my iPhone operating system but when I do, it says I have purchases that haven't been transfered to my iTunes library. I sync my phone everytime I plug it in (automatically), so I'm not sure why I'm getting the message. I have updated opertating systems before and lost everything, photos, contacts, music, aps, etc so I've been hesitant to do it this time, but my phone is just too slow and aps keep crashing etc.
Short of going through and manually verifying every app and song ive purchased, how can I figure out what is missing from my library, and begin this update?

thanks, but the device displays on the top right of the latest version of itunes, and i doesn't allow a right click. You can open it and access the info inside but theres no option to "transfer items" anywhere :-s

If the screen shows a plug going to itunes, then you have no choice, It's in recovery mode. You'll be given the chance to restore from a backup either from itunes or icloud.
I assume when you got the message to update (was this for the ios or update some apps?), that was before the device when dead. At any rate, doing a restore does not change the ios.

I am trying to upgrade my iPhone via my macbook but the following message keeps coming up and the download does not work
"There are purchased items on the iPhone “Mark Price’s iPhone” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this"
Please advise how I can transfer these files, I am not sure what files are in question.
I've only had the MacBook a couple of days, I am PC savvy but this is all new to me so please keep it as simple as possible. I am a brit based in Bahrain.

okay I've done everything regarding the transfer process (via file>transfer purchases) and syncing, so everything on my iPhone device seems to have been transferred to my iMac... however, I still get that message ("There are purchased items on the iPhone..."), trying to upgrade the iOS Have tried several times the same process of hitting transfer purchases via file, but nothing seems to make that message go away! Anything that was on the phone is already gone. You have no choice but to restore. If you were backing up and syncing the phone on a regular basis, you should be able to restore your backup with minimal data loss.

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

Try these troubleshooting steps.
If that Article did not resolve it... then perhaps a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is required..

If your iPhone is already on IOS 5, then Software update can be done on your iPhone under Settings > General > Software Update.
But if your iphone's ISO is 4 or before, it can only be done through your computer iTunes.

I appreciate the answer, but what you describe is not entirely accurate. First, to even see view, you have to enable the menu by clicking on the icon in the upper left. View allows you to show the sidebar.
Second, you will NOT see your devise listed in sidebar or anywhere else. Instead, you have to click on "devise" from the sidebar menu, wait a minute, and then it will finally show up under "devise." Or maybe it just takes a minute to show up whatever you do.
Third, right clicking on your devise will take you to a menu with "transfer my files" on it, but then iTunes will refuse to make the transfer. Instead, it will tell you that <your apps> on your <devise> could not be transferred to iTunes "because you are not authorized for it on your computer." Apple unhelpfully suggests going to store> authorize this computer. There is a "store" menu item on the sidebar, but it has no "authorize this computer" sub-menu. Instead, go to the horizontal menu at the upper left, and THERE you will find "store" and the "authorize this computer" sub-menu. Now you can transfer your files, to who knows where.
