Imac 24 " RAM"

I just bought the 24 inch 2.8GHz imac with the original 2Gb RAM. I wanted to upgrade and bought 2 x 2Gb RAM. When I installed them, the computer sounded beeps told me that something was wrong. I took the RAMs back to the shop and they tested it on a laptop and they worked fine.
The salesperson said something could be wrong with the slots on my imac. Can this be true?
I also noticed that the RAMs i bought from an apple shop was made from a different company than the original ones in the imac.
What is wrong with my machine?
Thank you .

Installing RAM is extremely simple assuming you put in memory as specified for your machine. Look in your owners manual for the correct specifications or click Command and Space Bar at the same time which will start Spotlight. Then type System Profiler and hit enter, then look on the left side of the System Profiler for Memory and click it. This is will display the memory installed and it's specifications.
It will look similar to this:
BANK 0/DIMM0:
Size: 2 GB
Type: DDR2 SDRAM
Speed: 667 MHz
Status: OK
Manufacturer: 0x7F98000000000000
Part Number: 0x4B494E4753544F4E20202020202020202020
Serial Number: 0xCD227898
BANK 1/DIMM1:
Size: 2 GB
Type: DDR2 SDRAM
Speed: 667 MHz
Status: OK
Manufacturer: 0x7F98000000000000
Part Number: 0x4B494E4753544F4E20202020202020202020
Serial Number: 0xA103EF68
Then purchase the Type and Speed memory for your machine (I suggest OWC or Crucial) and install following the instructions in your owners manual. The whole process should take less than 10 minutes to do.

Roger

  • Imac and ram simple question

I am getting a new imac in a couple of days, i aready have the 4gb of ram. The question is should i install it first, before i even turn on the imac????
is there a site or directions that tells you how to install ram??

It's a pretty simple procedure. The HOW can't be explained any better than in your little manual.
You should run it for a few days (or at least hours) to make sure everything works properly, with the original RAM. Try everything, stress it a bit by running multiple programs, like an iTunes video podcast at the same time as playing a QuickTime HD movie trailer. Once you are satisfied everything is working fine, then upgrade the RAM.

  • 27" 2010 iMac 16gb RAM...still swapping?

I upgraded my 27" 2010 iMac (quad core i7) to 16gb RAM, and some things are a bit faster e.g. photoshop.  But perhaps it wasn't the noticeable speed boost I was expecting.  Also, I can definitely hear a lot of swapping out to virtual memory happening at times.  On startup it happens a lot.  I can't believe it's going beyond 16gb in terms of memory requirements just to start up.  The "About this mac" info panel shows that it has definitely recognised all 16gb memory.
Am I imagining things re the swapping?  Do I have anything to be concerned about?  What tests can I do to ensure that this is as fast as it should be and that it's not dodgy hardware or something?  Any comments appreciated.
    cheers,
    Ian

  • Can I use Original Imac 1333 Ram on my Mac Book Pro I7?

    Hi everyone,
    I have an 2010 I7 Imac at work with 8 Gb of Ram (2 x 4GB DDR3 1333MHz).
Can I use this ram in my Macbook Pro I7?
I realised that I'm using much more my MacBook than the Imac, so it would be more efficient for me to have 4GB in the Imac and 8GB in the MacBook.
The plan is to have the 2 x 4GB DDR3 1333MHz on the MacBook, and put the 2 x 2GB DDR3 1067MHz on the Imac.
    Is this possible?
I read somewhere that it is possible, but they say that 1333MHz ram makes the MacBook unstable.
    Is this true?
    Thank you.

    You're welcome
TBH I'm not actually sure how the Intel DMI determines memory speed - assume it's just a multiplier based on underlying clock speed. Whether that's controllable in BIOS-based computers, I don't know.
The most important thing is that it's running at 1066 (2x532), and that the CAS latency is the best it can support (7-7-7-20), which is what you seem to have
You often find 1333 memory that has higher latency like 8-8-8-24, which if you're being forced to run at 1066 would obviously mean it's worse than a specific 1066 module that has lower latencies. (since actual latency = time for a clock-tick x latency in clock ticks)
From reading the forums I think a lot of people make this mistake, thinking that the 1333 mem will necessarily run better, but don't consider the higher latency. You can get lower latency 1333 mem, but it's considerably more expensive.

  • Performance with After Effects on New 27" iMac 24GB RAM should be SO FAST Right?

Hello, I just got the new 27" iMac, installed 24GB Crucial RAM. It's got 3.4GHz Intel Core i7 processor.
And NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB....
So I just installed my After Effects and Premiere programs, opened up a project. Literally just tested a 3 second after effects composition and rendered it. It says it is using 18% of 24GB of RAM and it is taking over an hour. I even attempted changing the output setting to just a H.264 1080p 23.976. Same issue.
I am pretty new at this stuff, but I've got an 8GB Powerbook that would render this in less than a minute. Can you think of something I should check on? What could be causing this? Seems like something is very wrong here. I haven't even done anything to my settings, it's basically all out of the box (software and computer).
    Thank you so much!

We cannot know. You need to tell us what exactly is going on in your comp. The simple explanation would be that you have set your comp renderer to raytrace 3D and with that on, on systems that do not have a supported GPU even simple, conventional stuff renders for ever. Check this. For anything else we need much more info.

  • Upgrade Intel iMac's RAM from 3GB to 4GB and change Graphics Card

    Hi,
I have 20" Intel iMac (November 2008) and it has 3GB of memory as of now. I would like to upgrade it to 4GB. I need to know if Apple will do this for me at my local Apple Store and how much this will cost. Also, I want to change my video card from ATI to Nvidia. Is this even possible? If so, please give me some details about it. I am more concerned abut the RAM issue.
    Thank You!!!

They almost certainly will be willing and able to do that, but you'll have to get an estimate from the store on the cost. To get a ballpark figure, check Apple's website and see what 4GB of DDR2 SO-DIMMs would run you, then add about $100 for labor. Honestly, there's no real point to paying someone to do this. All you do is take a Philips #2 screwdriver to the screw on the little panel at the bottom of the iMac. Once you losen that, the panel comes off, and there are little black plastic flaps that let you pull the RAM out so you can grasp it with your hands. Then you just push the new RAM in until you feel it snap into place, fold the black plastic tabs over it, and put the panel back on. Once you have the RAM, it'll probably be a 5-10 minute job, tops. Just be sure not to do it while the system is on or plugged in. If you do it yourself you can buy DDR2 SO-DIMMs anyone. Apple will charge a hefty premium because they have to cover the costs of potentially having to replace them under warranty.
As for the video card... It's technically possible, but it would be so ridiculously expensive for just swapping the equivalent nVidia card for your ATI one, it would be downright stupid to pay to have it done. So for all practical purposes, it's not possible.

  • IMac's RAM

    Salut à tous,
I'm to buy a brand new iMac,
    about their RAM, (DDR2 SDRAM),
is it possible to get this RAM cheaper ? In common computer stores ? Or is it required to have Apple RAM ?
Please answer only if you tested it or have heard about that. Don't consider me as a betrayer but as a student.
    Merci, Sylvain.

    Sylvain,
Any high-quality RAM that meets the specs will work.
For example: "4.0GB (2GB + 2GB Module Set) Upgrade kit for all Apple 'Core 2 Duo' 2.2GHz, 2.4GHz MacBook Pro "Mid 2007" Models. - PC5300 DDR2 667MHz 200 Pin. New, Lifetime Advance Replacement Warranty." for $230 USD from http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/53IM2DDR4GBK/
    I never buy Apple memory.
I just ordered my new iMac (2.8 GHz) with 1 GB of memory and I ordered the above memory from MacSales to replace it. I will take the Apple memory to my local used-Mac store and get $25 for it.

  • Why is aperture crashing on my iMAC after Ram upgrade?

I have recently upgraded the Ram on my Apple iMac and everything seems to be working fine except Aperture, which keeps crashing. Should I reinstall it? If so how? It is showing as installed on my purchases and the box is greyed out.

Should I reinstall it? If so how?
Before reinstalling, check, if it is a system wide issue and try to narrow down the problem.
Is Aperture still crashing, if you are creating a new Aperture library and import a few test images?
Is Aperture still crashing, if you are launching it with the Shift key held down?
Is Aperture still crashing, when working from a different user account?
If  Aperture is working fine in any of these situations, the problem is with your Aperture library or settings /installations in your user account, and reinstalling Aperure should not be necessary.
Then post back please with your test results, and also your Aperture version number and how you bought Aperture, from the Mac App Store or a boxed Retail version?

  • Suspected iMac factory RAM problem, kernel panics?

I've lurked on these forums for a while, and had a mostly problem-free experience with my Mac, but I believe I have some circumstances which warrant creating my own topic. Here's my system specs:
    iMac 21.5, mid 2011
    2.7Ghz Intel Core i5
    AMD 6770m 512mb
    12GB RAM (2 2GB Apple default DIMMS, and 2 4GB Crucial DIMMs.)
OS X 10.7.5 Lion (the product listing in my username was made before the .5 update.)
I have had my mid-2011 iMac for 17 months, and began experiencing random kernel panics about once a day, for the last week or so. At first I suspected it to be an issue with the sound card because most of these panics happened while I was in Skype calls. I ran AHT and everything came up clean: I checked Skype, iTunes and Software Update (no updates were found for any of them.)
Even though AHT passed my RAM, I read up on kernel panics again--and even though my computer had no signs of being slow at the time of the panics, I dreaded that that might be the issue. I ran Rember, a frontend for memtest, with all of my RAM installed, and the computer panicked during the block sequential test. No other programs were running at the time. I have been using the 8GB of Crucial RAM for nearly a year without issues, but I still removed the bottom pair of DIMMS, which turned out to be the Apple-installed RAM. (It is likely that my father switched the Apple sticks to the bottom while helping me install the upgrade.)
I ran Rember again and found that the Crucial RAM passed all tests; since no other programs were running at the time, it leads me to believe the factory DIMMs may be faulty. My plan is to use the computer with only Crucial RAM for a day and make sure no panics occur, then run memtest with only Apple RAM installed; if a panic occurs, then I will know they're faulty.
My iMac has AppleCare, but the nearest Apple Store is about 3 hours away (no AASPs here, rural area.) Is it possible to get in contact with Apple and have them shipme some new RAM, in exchange for the old? Can I contact the store and UPS or mail the computer in for service and have it shipped back? If the RAM turns out to be faulty, should I just replace it with more Crucial RAM?
In case someone can pinpoint the issue as something other than a RAM problem, here's my latest kernel panic log, which occurred during memtest. During all of these panics, I was multitasking (games, iTunes, Skype) but hardware temperatures were never beyond what they usually are under load (Processor below 50c, GPU below 70.) The "BSD process in active thread" has varied from kernel-task to cider, as well as Skype.

Thank you for reading. I apologize for the long post.

Had another kernel panic: this time during Skype, as usual. When the kernel panic occurs, the sound will skip and loop while the alert displays--and it always seems to happen when either me or my contact is speaking. I can be in call for several hours before this happens. The only major contributor to these panics I can see now is my headset.
I am using a Razer Carcharias headset (I know, Razer is starting to fail me), that has no drivers, and standard 3.5mm jacks. The mic doesn't work, as the iMac is only line-in, but that never bothered me because I prefer to use the built-in one. The headset is set as an output device both in Skype and in System Preferences -->Sound. I've gone several days without being on Skype, and still using the headset for iTunes and so on--no panics. But after a few hours of Skype, no matter what I'm doing as long as that's running: panic. Every time.
Some people on these forums have reported issues with panics when plugging in headphones or removing them, but I've never had that sort of problem. The log which I post below makes mention of a razerhid text that did not appear before I removed the mouse. I removed that kext by uninstalling another Razer driver before making this post, and testkext does not show any kext by that name running now.
But I can't figure out why a HID kext or driver would interfere with sound devices. It must be the headset somehow, which greatly disappoints me, as I've used the external speakers in calls for a year without issue.
Others have mentioned fears that these kinds of panics might be an issue with the logic board. I severely hope it's not a logic board issue: because of the wait times with Apple repair, I'd probably have to have my parents drive the machine in, drive back, wait a week, and repeat. This computer is quite literally my livelihood, but I can't ask them to drive two to three hours one way just for that. (Sadly, the only shops in a 50 mile radius that even mention Mac repair are those that have techs, in some cases uncertified, do repairs. Can't void my AppleCare like that.)
I am considering contacting Razer support and seeing if they have any advice on the issue. Here's my latest kernel panic log (ignore the razerhid kext, removed it already)

  • IMac G4 RAM upgrade?

How much can a G4 be upgraded to, is it 1GB only?

    Hi Hamper,
Just to further add to Steve's reply, there were seven different releases of the G4 iMac:
    1. iMac (Flat Panel) aka Tessera, P80 - Introduced Jan 2002, Discontinued Feb 2003 - Max RAM = 1GB
    2. iMac (17-inch Flat Panel) aka P79 - Introduced July 2002, Discontinued Feb 2003 - Max RAM = 1GB
    3. iMac (15-inch Early 2003) - Introduced Feb 2003, Discontinued Sep 2003 - Max RAM = 1GB
    4. iMac (17-inch Flat Panel, 1GHz) - Introduced Feb 2003, Discontinued Sep 2003 - Max RAM = 1GB
    5. iMac (15-inch USB 2.0) aka Horizon, Q268 - Introduced Sep 2003, Discontinued July 2004 - Max RAM = 2GB
    6. iMac (17-inch USB 2.0) aka Horizon, Q26C - Introduced Sep 2003, Discontinued July 2004 - Max RAM = 2GB
    7. iMac (20-inch USB 2.0) - Introduced Nov 2003, Discontinued July 2004 - Max RAM = 2GB
All models had one factory installed module (earlier models had 512MB factory installed, later models had a 1GB module factory installed) and one user accessible module.
What you must understand is that Apple, and indeed any computer manufacturer, can only specify maximum RAM specifications with the memory modules that were publicly available at the time of release (or when the specs were written). Since they were released, larger memory modules have become more widely available (not to mention cheaper). You most certainly can install a 1GB or 2GB module in your iMac and it will be recognised.
If you have further questions there is a Flat Panel iMac Category with frequent contributors who will be able to help you. You can access it here:

  • IMac '07 Ram Upgrade

Anyone know if this ram will work for the iMac Mid/Late 2007?
    Kingston 2GB 667MHz Laptop Memory (KTH-ZD8000B/2G)

Just done the upgrade last night using Kingston P2 5300 per apple support site. As my Imac 7.1 20" Aug 2007 similar to yours. Yesterday price for 2x2G @ S$55 each @ SimLim Sq.
Did the Hitachi 1T HDD upgrade at the same time too (learn from Internet). Bought a Torx8 S$3 + HDD at S$72. I am very happy as it work. was down to 2G HDD space & now have 600+G to use.

  • IMac 5k ram upgrade.

    Dear all,
Hopefully this isn't a huge repeat topic.
I am looking to get the new iMac 5K. I have held off for around a year now as I thought they'd bring a high res iMac.
For me though, 8GB of RAM isnt enough. I am not willing to give apple £160 for an extra 8GB. So I would upgrade myself but here is my question/s.
Can I simply install 1 x 8GB card, is it that simple? Does the stock 8GB of RAM come as 2 x 4GB? Does this mean I need to buy 2 x 4GB RAM Cards?
Also, is the access to the Ram cards still in the back or is it now more complicated? I don't want to risk damaging anything, especially the display by opening the iMac.
    Any help would be appreciated.

According to the published specs here:
    https://www.apple.com/imac-with-retina/specs/
    Apple wrote:
    8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory; four SO-DIMM slots, user accessible
    Configurable to 16GB or 32GB.
That means yes, the stock 8GB comes 2 x 4GB modules, and you can add a 8GB ram module to one of the remaining slots.   Make sure it matches the speed of the currently installed modules for best performance.
You can buy a single 8GB module or 2x4GB modules. Its up to you.
The access panel is on the back.

  • Imac 32GB ram upgrade

My imac is a 27" mid 2011 model, 3.1Ghz intel core i5 with 4GB stock ram. I use programs like Adobe Premier Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, illustrator, Lightroom4 (pretty much everything on the Adobe Master Suite Collection CS6), Ableton Live, Protools etc. I understand that it IS possible to MAX out at 32GB of RAM.
My question is... Has anyone on here upgraded to 32GB of RAM on the imac? Any problems or glitches? i really want to upgrade but not sure if i should do 16GB or 32GB? Can you see any difference between 16GB and 32GB?
    Thanks in advance,
    Moe

Hi Moe, it can indeed hold 32GB...
    Standard RAM:
    4 GB
    Maximum RAM:
    32 GB*
    Details:
By default, 4 GB of RAM is installed as two 2 GB SO-DIMM modules. Two slots free. *Officially, this model supports four 4 GB modules -- one in each slot for a maximum of 16 GB of memory. However, third-parties have discovered that it actually will support 32 GB of memory using four 8 GB modules. In the US (and many other countries), site sponsor Other World Computing sells memory -- as well as other upgrades -- for this iMac. In Canada, site sponsor The Mac Market sells memory and other upgrades for this iMac. In Australia, site sponsor RamCity sells memory and other upgrades for this iMac.  Also see: Actual Max RAM of All G3 & Later Macs.

To get an idea if it would help...
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
