IMac 24" running very hot (just upgraded ram)
Hi
I just upgraded my RAM from 2gb to 4gb. While doing so I noticed a lot of dust where the RAM sticks go. I might be a bit paranoid but it seems like my iMac (late 2008) is, all of a sudden, running pretty hot, hotter than what I'm comfortable with.
Does anyone know if this may be because of the RAM upgrade? I'm not very tech savvy, sorry.
No temp changes have nothing to do with RAM changes but dust can. If you did not vacuum out the dust then shut down, remove the RAM cover and vacuum the RAM area. In addition while you have the door open make sure the RAM is fully seated by pressing very firmly with both thumbs and double check to see you installed the right RAM. When you turn the machine on this is a good time to do a SMC reset too. Here are instructions for that:
_SMC RESET_
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Imac 27" 2012 Mountain Lion running very hot
Please help. My 27" IMac running very hot, especially top left corner. Is there a fix.
Tony RA couple of things. First, do you know what the internal temperature are? if not, look into getting the widget istat from slayer. It will show you something like this:
You can monitor the fan speeds and temps.
The iMac should speed up the fans in relation to the temperatures against a profile determined by Apple. If for some reason, your fan speeds are low and the temp is sitll high, you may need to reset your SMC. That is the shutdown, unplug, wait, plug it back in, restart maintenance proceedure.
If everything is working properly and you still don't like the temperatures, you can download SMCfancontrol. This applications allows you to speed up your fans manually or set higher minimums.
Lastly, iMacs to get hot and are designed for it. Apple wants to keep the fans speeds down so the system is quiet. If you play lots of games, or doing a lot of GPU/CPU intensive work, it is normal for the chips to hit 70C at the case and the fans to be clearly audible. If you were expecting to work the machine hard but the aluminum backside to be just warm, that won't happen. -
Hi,
Since Apple changed my Motherboard and Hdd inside my iMAC running Windows 7 bootcamp, I find the case or the iMAC runs very hot compared to before...Post actual temps and then we can tell, please use iStatPro which can be found at www.macupdate.com.

Mid-2010 Macbook Pro running very hot
Hi all,
My mid-2010 Macbook pro is running very hot. On average CPU is 61-70 degrees Celsius, sometimes even more. I'm pretty bad at having lots of chrome tabs open and heavy multitasking, but even when I'm not temperature still ends up very high and fan rpm can get to over 6000. Heat seems to be concentrated to the lefthand side of the touchpad (battery area?). I'm running 10.9.3.
Current stats below from iStat pro widget (smcFanControl concurs with these temps), with only the following pic's activity running. Laptop currently balanced on two books (so airflow around the sides) which are in turn on my lap.
I have tried reseting the SMC with the shift-control-option-power method but it doesn't seem to have worked - instructions said to press and hold this, then release, then press power again to boot, but laptop boots up from this combination anyway.
Am I just doing something wrong or will this be an expensive trip to the apple store to fix?Hey happyhaskins,
If you are having an issue with your MacBook Pro running excessively hot, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with visits to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file. -
My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install. Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?
I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good... -
MacBook Pro mid-2012 running very slowly after upgrade to Yosemite
Problem description:
MacBook Pro mid-2012 - installed Yosemite, and the system now crawls. Webpages have very delayed responses, can take 30+ seconds to react to typing or selection. I turned off FileVault, that did not appear to help. Emptied the trash, removed some obsolete fonts. Any help for what else to try would be much appreciated.

Follow the developers instructions for each app and uninstall. Then restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally and retest.
OS X does not need third party apps to run well, and WD's software is total garbage and should be ignored. Their external HD's are pretty poor too, the enclosures WD uses tend to create a lot of issues with OS X. I would recommend buying higher quality EHDs, something like OWC Mercury Elite Pro series. -

Hi. My desktop (iMac 21.5" from 2009) is running very hot since I downloaded Maverick OS X. Is there a way to find out if it is running TOO hot or if it's ok?
Does the computer seem to heat up when doing a particular task or is it an "all the time" thing?
Can you answer the following questions for us?:
1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?
2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimization" applications?
3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software?
4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?
5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)? -

Macbook pro 2.16 running very hot. Is there a fix?
Hi
My MacBook Pro 2.16 17" is running very hot all of a sudden. anyone know what causes this? Is there a fix?Welcome. If this is happening all of a sudden, you should ask yourself if you have installed anything recently, updated anything, or changed the hardware in any way. I presume that the fans are running fast. Does the heat go away, or is this (and the fans) constant when the Mac is running? Make sure the vents are not blocked.
To see what processes are running when this is happening, go into the Utilities folder (in Applications) and start Activity Monitor (probably the top of the list there). See what processes are running and if any have an unusually high percentage in the CPU column. Make sure the button (top right) shows Active Processes. As an afterthought, the occasional surge to a high speed by a process is not unusual, but a process that has a continuing high reading is what you need to look for.
You may find that something like Flash or a QuickTime reference is showing unusual activity. You can highlight the item (with a click) and use the red Quit Process button to make it stop. If this repeats, some other investigation may be needed.

desktop (27inch Mid 2011) is running very hot to the touch - should I be concerned?
Likely not but without specific information it's impossible to say. Please download a OS X temp monitoring app and reply with actual tempratures.

I am finding the my Macbook Pro (with Retnia display) is running very hot when I am using iPhoto or downloading photos from my iPhone to iPhoto. It is on a surface that allows airflow around the entire machine so I am not blocking the airflow. Is anyone else havng this problem?
Here's the Activity monitor Inspect information...the machine immediately started heating up as soon as I launched iPhoto.
