IMac 27" mid-2010 as a second screen

Hi,
I recently got a MacBook Pro Retina 13" (2015) and I would like to use my iMac 27" (mid-2010) as a second screen.
I already tried it by using a HDMI to Mini DisplayPort cable but it didn't work.
So I've checked on the Internet and as stated in this forum thread (Macbook pro 2014 connect to imac 27 2010), I need to use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable and since the Thunderbolt port on my MacBook Pro should handle it.
So I hope someone can confirm me this solution will work.
Thank you by advance.

It's correct.

  • IMac 21,5 2010 3,06GHz Second screen no max resolution

    Hi there,
I have an iMac 21,5 3,06Ghz 2010-model. And an LG Flatron w2261VP. I want to connect this LG to my iMac, but when i do it gives a max res. of 1600x1200. This is not the native res. for this screen, the native one is 1920x1080. But when i select the 1600x1200 the screen goes black and says "out of range". However, when i connect the LG screen to my MacBook Pro 13" 2010 the screen automatically uses the 1920x1080 resolution and works flawlessly.. The resolutions i can select on my imac for my LG are: 640x480, 800x600, 1012x768, 1152x870, 1280x768, 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1344x1008, 1400x1050 and 1600x1200
I'm currently using the 1400x1050, can't select the higher one; screen goes "out of range"
    I use a mini-displayport to VGA adapter.
My question is: Is it even possible to use a second screen with my iMac? Why does it work with my MacBook Pro and not with my iMac? Is it a bug? Do i need a DVI of HDMI? Anyone else suffering this problem?
Your help is very much appreciated!

Are both in Extended Desktop Mode?

Click the Utilities icon/folder to see the contents and then drag the items out of the folder upwards onto the Desktop and they will be removed from the folder.

  • IMac 27" (mid 2010): Will replacing the HD cause fan problems?

    Hi,
I have an iMac 27" (mid 2010). My HD is broken, and I'd like to replace it. I've already installed an SSD, so replacing the HD shouldn't be much of a problem.
However I've read that replacing the HD causes the fan to spin up all the time. Some sites say this started one generation later, but some remain unspecific or say that this problem affects all iMacs. Before I replace my HD, I'd like to know what to expect.
So my question is: in my 2010 iMac, can I replace the HD without causing fan problems (provided I put the temp plug in the right place )?
    Best regards,
    F

OWC is mistaken. I don't know why they keep saying that. (I'm not even certain the OWC blog linked above related to using the same make drive on the late 2009s was ever correct. I had a long phone conversation with an upper level WD tech some time ago who said that the originals were special ordered by Apple.) Those drives have Apple proprietary firmware which puts the temp sensor output to the jumper block, and you cannot just replace with a drive of the same manufacturer. A non-Apple WD drive will not have that connection at the jumper block.
Two possibilities: Get an external stick-on temp sensor that will work with your model or use SSD Fan Control.
    http://exirion.net/ssdfanctrl/
If I'm mistaken and you do get it to work directly with a replacement WD drive I will be pleasantly surprised, since I have a Late 2009 which will need a new drive sooner or later. Please post back with your results.

  • Is iMac 27" (mid 2010) Quad-Core Intel Core i7   64-bit kernel ???

    Hello,
Sorry I'm not familiar with 64-bit term and would like to know is iMac 27" (mid 2010) Quad-Core Intel Core i7 a 64-bit processor and does it support in Mac OS X?? I'm confused as I from the Apple list "Mac OS X v10.6: Macs that use the 64-bit kernel" does not have latest iMac models. I plan to buy iMac 27" Core i7 for video editing and also like to know does Final Cut support 64-bit too. Appreciate all kind advise please.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    it's in list...
These Macs *support the 64-bit kernel*, but do not use it by default.
    *iMac (Early 2008) and later*
MacBook Pro (Early 2008) and later
The keyword is "not by default"

  • My iMac 27" (mid-2010) won't boot up.

I had recently received a warning that the hard disk was nearly full.  Now what I get is the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning 'gear'.  For a brief time (1-2 minutes) there will be a status bar below the spinning gear.  This appears to show about 5% progress, then disappears and just the logo and spinning gear are left and it just stays like this.  I had hoped installing additional RAM would help and upgraded from 4 to 8 GBs (purchased through OWC).  This did not help.  I have tried booting up in safe mode (holding down the shift key) and the "DVRAM zap" (holding down the Control, Option R & P keys) when starting the computer.  I have also tried starting using the OSX Tiger install disk (10.4.3) while holding down the C key.  I keep getting the same result.  One thing to note is I am trying this with the wireless keyboard.  I do not have a USB keyboard.  Will these attempts be "recognized" with a wireless keyboard or do I need to use a USB keyboard?  Also, not sure what OS I'm running currently.
    Thank you for your help.

Tiger will not boot a 2010 Mac.  The oldest operating system that might work is Snow Leopard (10.6).  Being it is mid-2010 iMac, it has to be the pre bundled 10.6 installer disc that came with it from Apple labelled iMac.  If you are missing that disc, call AppleCare.
DVRAM is not what it is called. NVRAM and PRAM can be reset, if the machine is under 4 years old.  Over 4 years old, the PRAM battery may be too old and cause the machine to be frozen until the PRAM battery is replaced.
A too full hard drive often lends itself to a corrupted directory and trouble booting up.  Once your hard drive exceeds 85% capacity, it should be cleared, and excess data archived away on other other media that you don't regularly backup in a clone or otherwise.
Upgrading the RAM may help speed things up, but does nothing to help the hard drive is too close to capacity.
So the big question is, is your data backed up or not?
If not, you may need to get a larger hard drive to recover data to as documented here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
You need to get a USB keyboard, preferably an Apple or MacAlly if you want to boot the machine with the startup manager.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro crash - screen goes black

There is a major problem with the mid 2010 Mac Book Pro's and Lion.  I suspect that it is related to the drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB video card and perhaps the i7 processor.  The crashes are random and most often occur after a mouse click then the screen suddenly goes black and a restart is forced.  There is a thread on MacRumors that describes many others with the same problem: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1182104
The crash occurs less frequently when the power and external monitors are connected.  When the MBP is unteathered it crashes every 20 minutes.  I am really surprised and disappointed that a bug this severe made it through final testing. Looking forward to 10.7.1.
    Scott

im so glad im not the only one with this problem. at least i know its not because some careless things i unconciously did that makes my mac gone berzerg like this.
i also encounter the exact same problem with all of you. problems started a month ago. at first it was just once in a while then it became a frequent thing especially when my battery left with 20-30%. then after i plugged in the magsafe, its okay. lately, nothing safes the mac from crashing, particularly when im running adobe and/or autocad. i thought it was software problems so i backed up my files, performed erase and install snow leopard then made an even bigger mistake by upgrading to lion. after finish upgrading, the crashings got even more often. every starting up, after i got a glimpse of login in, pufffttt, screen goes black but keyboard still on. googled it up and say reseting smc will do the trick. eeekkkk nothing! then resetting the pram. worked okay for quite some times then puufffttt, crash! ask a question on yahoo answers and got a help from lovely person to install gfsxcard-something and told to opt for integrated only. worked fine for 2 days and still went back to crashing. opened up the mac, testing each rams, reshuffling em, still got nothing. the only thing that enables me to do my work with this Majestic mac is resetting pram everytime i turn it on.
since im living in singapore (bought this mac june'09 in melbourne, australia), there is no genius bar to be found, running a diagnostic only at any apple service cost me 120 bucks and if i have to change the logicboard, its gonna cost me ard 1000++ dollas since i dont have any applecare and my warranty expired 4mnths ago. so, i might be killing myself soon! yauuzaaaa

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro White Screen of Death?

    Hi all,
I have a Mid- 2010 Macbook Pro, running 10.8.2 that, when booting, sounds the Startup Chime but no Apple logo appears, just a white screen.  I'm in IT so I've done several things, but nothing has worked and I couldn't find a previous discussion that was similar to mine.
Here's what I've done so far:
    - Changed hard drives
    - reseated RAM
    - Unplugged Battery
    - Reset the PRAM
    - Tried to boot from CD using CTRL- C
    - Tried Recovery boot using CTRL- R
Anything else I could try?  I keep thinking it may have something to do with the Time Change, but that seems a little weird to me if that's the cause.  It worked fine late last night and then it did this in the morning (after the time change).
Thanks for any help you can give!

    Hi sanjampet,
Tried the SMC reset, safe boot, CD boot, and Recovery boot all with no luck.  Not sure why it's going on, but it's looking more and more like a hardware issue to me.  It's a white screen (instead of a grey screen), so I'm worried that it's something with it.  I'm going to try and see if I can remote into it using Screen Sharing to see if it's something with the display.
My wife used it last and she told me that it was slow on the internet with the mouse freezing up, so she held down the power to turn it off then it came up with the white screen which hasn't come back on since.  I'm using an 3rd party SSD hard drive and replaced it with another SATA hard drive, but it didn't help.
    Thanks,
    JN

  • Mid 2010 MacBook pro gray screen beeps no startup

    Hello,
My mid 2010 MacBook pro will not startup. What I get is the startup chimes with white or gray screen. Then some beeping and clicking starts. Will not boot remotely from FireWire drive.
I'm thinking it might be ram based on what I have read so far as opposed to a hard drive crash.
    Any ideas?

The number of beeps should tell you what the problem is.

  • IMac (27in, mid 2010, i7 2.93ghz) has green and pink squares on the display

This is an iMac in a lab with several others of the same model and specs. This is the only one that has been experiencing this issue with green and pinkish/purple squares sometimes showing up on the display. They seem to go away once someone logs on. The longer it sits, the more of these squares appear. I'm guessing it's a video card issue, but i want to make sure before i call it in for service. I haven't been able to run a hardware test on it because it never finishes the preliminary test before running the actual test.

It seems to take several hours before it appears. So, when it sits for a while, they start showing up.
That could indicate a heat issue affecting the video hardware. Some things to mitigate heat are:
    1) Clean the air intakes on the bottom of the computer. It's surprising how much lint can accumulate there.
    2) Make sure nothing obstructs the long exhaust air slot at the top of the iMac's back panel. The back of the computer case should be 6-8 inches (150-200mm) from any object such as part of a workstation.
    3) Be sure people are not stuffing books and papers between the workstation and the bottom of the computer.
    4) That model iMac came with disks. Find the one that includes Apple Hardware Test and run it. If you get an error, report it to us. Error codes that include "SNS" indicate a sensor problem. Codes with "MOT" suggest a fan motor is failing or has failed
    5) Review this Apple article to learn how to check if a runaway background process is using too many processor cycle and running up the temps:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473
    6) Get a temp monitoring utility to see how hot various components are getting. I like Temperature Monitor:
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
It puts the temps in your menubar so you don't have to invoke Dashboard like some other temp monitors require. Here is what my Mid-2010 27-inch 2.93ghz quad-core i7 reports with Mail and Safari open, and about 16 tabs running in Safari:

  • Apple hardware test does not support this machine, iMac 27" mid 2010

Hi, I have a mid 2010 iMac 27inch with OSX Maverics updated to the very latest version.
I need to hardware test my mac but I am finding it impossible. If I press D at bootup, nothing.
Option D, loads hardware test, but it comes back saying:
"Apple hardware test does not support this machine."
I don't have the original install disk for the mac and it has been updated several times online to the latest version. What am I supposed to do in this instance?

That Mac model requires the original system disk to run AHT. You can call Apple at 1-800-MYAPPLE, and ask for an operating system specialist. Then you can request replacement system disks for your computer. The cost us usually under US$20.
Have your serial number at hand; it is required for the techs to find the correct disk set for your model.
