IMac 27" resolution issue

So I got my new baby almost a month ago, and immediately had an issue with its (otherwise superb) resolution, which made everything so SMALL on the screen... With all due respect to Apple, I don't see no reason to cause damage to my eyesight, especially since the Mac is my bread-n-butter, and I find myself staring at the display for 8-10 (and these days even 12) hours a day....
I bumped into this little utility called TinkerTool System (v.3) and one of their many utilities (some I would be hesitant to play with), System, has a tab called Screen, which deals with the screen resolution and is giving me an option to "unlock the "HiDPI" feature of OS X to magnify all screen output without reducing picture quality..."
The improvement is SIGNIFICANT... Everything on my screen is about 24% larger now (I know, 'cause before, working in InDesign, to see a page at real size I had to enlarge it to 150%, now I have to enlarge it to 121%) — with the same superb quality as the default.
Here is my new setting:

Is that any better or different than simply changing the screen resolution in System Preferences --> Display?
The reason the OP is using TinkerTool is that there is an undocumented HiDPI mode in OSX 10.8.2 that emulates Retina displays for non-Retina display high resolution Macs. It's supposed to be used by developers who have access to X-code, which is, of course, free for anyone who wants it.
TinkerTool has used the X-code (and I don't think legally, because it is not an official part of Mountain Lion) to allow you to change screen resolutions with no loss of quality. If you simply change the screen resolution using System Preferences, the image quality below the optimal 2560X1440 will be miserable.
The problem with using undocumented and unapproved OSX code is that Apple can bork it whenever they please, which could be in the next OSX update. The reason this was made available to developers was so that they could test software on various Mac resolution sizes for future products as the Retina Display gets released on more and more Macs (don't count on it being available on an iMac any time soon, since it would require a graphics card more powerful than anything out there right now).
I bought the 27" so that I had massive screen real estate to do work. Scaling down would be rather silly for me. If the font size is illegible, I'd be visiting my ophthalmologist.

  • Logic pro 9 with imac 27" resolution issues

    hello,
every time i open logic with my new 27" imac i get a systems requirements pop up that says: Logic Pro recommends a screen resolution of 1024x768 otherwise the software may not function properly. the recommended resolution shrinks the screen size down to like 20-24 inch size screen. this looks like a issue with no immediate solution.
any input would be greatly appreciate

So always the same problem, maybe from ESX24, I don't know...
When I try to right click on "full strings legato.exs" (in /library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments/orchestral/full strings legato), and open it with LP9 or Main Stage, it tells me that "the file is corrupted" from MainStage, and "impossible to open the file" from logic...
    Thank you again!

  • Serious resolution issues with After Effects CC (2014) on Windows 8.1 Pro on Dell Precision M3800 laptop??

My new company installed Adobe Creative Cloud (There was some annoying Proxy issues at first, because of the seriously tight I.T policies) but we are having some serious resolution issues with After Effects CC 2014 (also have this resolution problem with Adobe Premiere, Media Encoder, Muse) on Windows 8.1 Pro on a Dell Precision M3800 laptop with icons and interface looking too small and hard to see, is there a fix, an update or a work around, can anyone help?
    Any help will be appreciated!
    k.regards
    Ramon

Hi Todd is there a time-frame for this fix, there is a lot of pressure on me, because I convinced my company to get the Creative Cloud and quite a lot of the CC software is not compatible with the latest Windows 8.1 OS.
Is there at least a work around, until this big fix comes along?

  • OS X 10.8.3 Display Resolution Issue

Ever since updating to 10.8.3, there has been a sporatic resolution issue when waking my MBP. My mid 2009 13" MBP operates in closed lid mode while connected to a 21.5" monitor. My machine frequently wakes to a completely incorrect resolution that is many times the size of my display. It fixes to the correct resolution if I simply sleep and wake again, or correct it via System Preferences, but having to do this several times becomes quite annoying. Anyone else experiencing this bug and/or have any ideas on its resolution?

  • Macbook Pro 15" Retina Windows 7 HDMI Resolution issue

    Hello,
I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro 15" with Retina display running bootcamp with Windows 7.
I have connected the Macbook to an external HP w2448hc display using HDMI interface.
When booting to OS X 10.9.4, the resolution of the external display is set to 1920x1200 and it looks fine. See picture below:
However, when booting to Windows 7 the resolution on the external display looks lower (although shows up as 1920x1200):
I have another PC which I have connected to the same display with HDMI and the resolution also shows up as 1920x1200. However, in this case the resolution indeed looks as the correct one:
Although not seen very well from the screen shots, both the PC and the Macbook Pro (with Windows 7) show the same resolution in the settings, but the desktop and icons under Macbook Pro (bootcamp) look bigger and with smaller resolution.
Does anyone know how to solve this?

    Hi,
I managed to fix this resolution issue by lowering the color depth to 16bit for the external display. Not exactly sure why was this necessary, maybe for some reason Windows cannot allocate enough video memory for both displays?

    G'day,
I've just upgraded to Acrobat 9.2 this arvo and I immediately noticed that a PDF created as screen resolution displays in a very poor quality. Yes, it's a low res PDF, but everything within the PDF displays very badly. Have I maybe missed something that has changed in Preferences or is it something else?
I am concerned as all work is sent to clients via a PDF for approval etc. and that they might feel that my artwork is of inferior quality due to the way PDFs now seem to display under Acrobat 9.2
Thanks in advance for any comments or help.
Go to Preference and to Page Display:
Check the part about the resolution and see if it matches the resolution of your display.
The the resolution of which you view a PDF on screen doesn't necessarily have to do with how it looks when printed. I just updated 9.2 and open a PDF and I didn't see any problems on my machine.

  • Menu Resolution Issues

I've been working on this DVD Menu forever for our first feature film, DVD's have to go into produciton today so Ive been working on getting the master DVD out to our duplicator. Can someone help me with my menu resolution issues I am having?
I've sent my menu from photoshop with interactive buttons, both the buttons and the text look great on my preview file, but after burning to dvd the menu looks low res and muddy. is there something I'm doing wrong?

is there something I'm doing wrong?
It would help if we knew the various settings. What are the project default transcode settings? That is what is used for menus. Motion menus? What is the pixel size and par of the menus.
Button highlights by the DVD spec only allow 2 bit indexed color. Adding effects does not work.
You might post a screenshot from photoshop with the layers twirled open.

  • OS X Mavericks: display randomly turning white/brown/grey [no resolution issues]

    Hey folks,
I discovered a very strange problem the last few days while using the internal and an external VGA Monitor on my Macbook Pro (mid 2010, 8GB).
I'm running on OS X Mavericks with the latest updates and the system runs pretty smooth.
What I discovered is as follows:
Using any VGA monitor that I own, sometimes both (internal and external) display turn white (or grey or brown, just displaying a solid colored screen). This occurs with literally every display I used externally and doesn't occur while just using the Macbook Pro without an external display. This didn't happen before on Mountain Lion, neither did it happen the first weeks on Mavericks (I've been using it since it's released). After this happening, I have to do a forced reboot. This issue does occur randomly within the daily usage.
Furthermore, I don't have any resolution issues as many user claimed about this already while running OS X Mavericks.
From looking at the system I can tell that the RAM is not damaged (also because this doesn't happen while using the MB without external display). I also tried other RAM, issue remains reproducible.
I haven't found any solution on the internet, so I decided to post my problem here.
Hope there is anybody out there who might be able to help me out.
    Yours sincerely

  • I unwittingly altered my 27" iMac's resolution.Now it's too big or small.

When I try the different display resolution choices available to me I either can't view the whole desktop (without having to scroll), or, I can't fill the whole monitor.  How can I get it back to "normal?"

Well, it's me, "Craigzilla," replying to my own post.  You see, I'm new here, and still rather ignorant of just how things work.  For example, I WANTED to "award" Niel the full 10 points, but somehow it appears I mistakenly awarded only five?  And I surely don't know how to change it.  Oh well, maybe this reply will suffice.  Bottom line?  Niel answered my question about iMac screen resolution impeccably.  He did so with lightning-like speed, complete conciseness, and absolute accuracy.  Merci beaucoup!

  • Apple tv3 resolution issues

I've been having resolution issues with my apple tv3. I recently updated the software and now the quality is nowhere near what is was last week. Originally I thought it was just Netflix but after trying the other channels like Skynews and PBS I've dicovered that it's the AppleTv. I reset the resolution to 1080p under
settings. I'm finding that I when I start a video I get the hd for the first few seconds then the quality goes to crap.I checked my internet speed and clocked it at
    25 mbps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's not ATV, the network connection.  Bandwidth download tests are not useful for this since it only tests for a brief time span, does not test the path from your ATV to the content provider.  It is also possible that your ISP is throttling streaming video or content from specific services.  I am guessing you are using WiFi?  I would try using a wired connection for a while as a test to see if that resolves it.  Streaming video rarely works well or reliably over WiFi.

  • My PC can connect to the airport extreme but with encryption it cannot connect to the internet my iMac has no issues, any help.

My PC can connect to the new airport extreme I just purchased but with encryption it cannot connect to the internet my iMac has no issues.  If I open the airport exteme up and provide no security everything is fine which leads me to believe it is something with the encryption between the two devices.  Not sure what step I'm missing here this shouldn't be this difficult.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am asking if the DNS IP addresses, not the IP addresses assigned by the DHCP service, are the same. DNS is like the Internet's version of the Yellow Pages. Your ISP typically will provide them to you or you can elect to use those provided by another source, like OpenDNS.
DNS is the service that translates a website's URL to its actual IP address so that you can access it. I am just trying to rule out that the PC is not configured properly with the correct DNS IP information.
The other thing to check is if the PC is configured to use a Proxy service. By default, it would not be.
Finally, what is the make & model of the PC. More importantly, if the PC is using either a PCI or USB wireless adapter, what is its make & model?

  • Magic Trackpad / iMac wake up issue.

    Hello,
Does anyone know of a fix for the following Magic Trackpad / iMac wake up issue please?
Basically hooked up a Magic Trackpad that was bought several months ago now and found that it works great however the 'click' functionality does not work whilst waking up my iMac. The cursor moves as it should however it's not possible to click onto either a registered account nor guest account in order to enter a password to wake-up from screensaver.
To get around this I've had to pair-up my Magic Mouse again which is not ideal.
A fix for this would be appreciated.
    OS installed: OSX 10.7.5.
    Thank you.

Just my .02, but why do you want a screen save? I was told a long time ago by some engineers not to have your screen saver running. Just non essential. Me, I have none of our computers doing so. They time out and sleep in between, so the hard drives and logic boards power down, if not shut down completely.
As for you situation, I had the same problem a while back and believed it was one or more of the apps. in the back ground. Could even be the UPS. Either re load your OS to check any corruption. And/or, check your login list of apps. and finder to see what is running without your knowledge or in the background, then closing out of open programs one by one prior to the screen saver engaging and see if it changes things.

  • Second monitor detection and resolution issue with iMac

    Hi All,
long time reader here, got a lot of helpful tips, thanks to all who post!!
I have a 24" iMac, Intel based, with OSX 10.5.8.
I bought a Viewsonic 22" monitor to use along side my iMac when using CS4 and I do a lot of photography. Now the problem is that sometimes my iMac recognizes it as VA2213w and other times it see it as VGA monitor. When is sees it as the VGA monitor the resolution changes a bit, even though it has it on its highest setting 1920x1080 @60hz. My tool pallets on the screen are a bit fuzzy, readable but not the best. I'm using a mini dvi to VGA adaptor as the Viewsonic only has a VGA plug. Could this be the issue? As I have read a lot of the problems here and they seem to be all pointing to the adaptor. If so then why does my iMac sometimes see it as VA2213w monitor and then on other times as VGA. I'm doing nothing to the display other than switching on in the morning.
There doesn't seem to be any consistency! Its driving me mad. I can't seem to get it back to recognize the display as VA2213. I have clicked on detect displays etc etc.
It was working fine all week and then suddenly last night it went back to seeing it as a VGA monitor only. Any help would be appreciated. I have no cursor issues, just the resolution and monitor detection.
    Regards
    Fergul

    Hi All,
Well the issue seems to be the cable. I had an older TFT monitor that I was using and when I bought the above viewsonic, I just simply connected it to the existing cable. It wasn't till I was about to send the monitor back for one that had a DVI connection that I decided to use the VGA cable that came with the new monitor. What can I say, there hasn't been an issue since my last post which was a few weeks ago. Even when the iMac goes to sleep and awaken, no probs. Thanks to those that posted, its appreciated!
    So far so good.
    Take care.

  • Windows XP resolution issue on 27" iMac

I've got windows XP installed on my 27" iMac through bootcamp but it's all stretched out. I'm assuming this is because of the high resolution of the 27" iMac and no matter what resolution i choose the screen looks all stretched out. Anyone know a fix?

Did you ever find a way to fix the resolution? I have the same issue. My guess is that there must be an updated driver.
