IMac 27 : Screen covered with vertical straight lines

It started a week ago while playing Civilization V on my iMac : the screen suddenly displayed vertical blue (alterned with dark blue) vertical straight lines, the sound was still working, i could hear the music from the game. Then the screen turned black and i could'nt hear anything anymore, i had to restart the computer with the apple button.  The same happened again with civilization, once with green lines. And today, while restarting after this bug, the screen displayed multicolor lines instead of the grey wallpaper with the apple.
What is that due to ? Is it a physical problem of the screen ? Any solution ?

If it only happened while your were playing the game I would have suggested it was an video card overheat problem.  But if you are now having problems even when not playing the game then perhaps the video card is just failing, maybe accelerated or caused by the overheating.
Try doing an smc and pram reset and see if that affect anything.
If you are having a booting problem then try booting in safe mode to see if there is still a booting problem. Also boot from your installer dvd and repair/verify your drives (not repair permissions).

  • IMac 21.5" boots to white screen with vertical blue lines/bars then locks up

iMac 21.5" (mid 2010) Intel Core i3 4GB RAM with Radeon HD 4670 boots to white screen with vertical blue lines/bars:
Then it locks up after a few minutes, at which point the screen changes to white with these blue symbol things all over the screen:
If boot to Safe Mode, it still has the white screen with blue lines/bars, but eventually loads the login screen and I can successfully login and get to the desktop, but even that has the bars/lines.
Eventually, after enough restarts or hard shutdowns it will boot normally with no video/display issues. I've run disk checks, did the SMC and PRAM resets, checked logs (that I know of), and have even taken it completely apart, cleaned it out, reseated everything, put it all back together, but no change. I've read a few other posts about similar issues (but not quite the same video issue as this) where people had the logic boars replaced or reinstalled OSX, but that didn't always fix it. Any ideas? Has anyone seen this issue before? Thank you.

    Is this a dead disk?
    Very well could be.
If you can not startup from the Hardware Test, in Safe Mode or from > OS X Recovery  as discribed in the Support article's.
Dig out the original Install Disc set that came with the iMac and do one of the following.
    1. Attempt to Repair the Hard Drive.
Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume.
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
    2. Run the Hardware Test from the second Install Disc.
        1. Insert Disc 2 and Startup holding the D key.
        2. Select the Extended Hardware Test.
Then if you still can not get anything going, you need to contact your Local Apple Store or AASP and make a Service appointment.

    Howdy carliosa,
If your iMac is not starting up normally you may need to do some checking to make sure things are working correctly. I would suggest starting with the steps in this article -
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • White with vertical colored lines on Equium A60

    Hi
I am new to this but really need your help. My laptop is about 18 months old and has always worked fine. Last week I plugged a broadband modem into it through an Ethernet cable and set up broadband. A couple of minutes after doing this when I looked at the screen again, it had gone all white with vertical colored lines down it. I have rebooted the machine etc and that is all I ever get now. As soon as I switch on, it just goes straight to white with these vertical colored lines.
I have tried connecting an external monitor to it and that works fine. The laptop is a Toshiba Equium A60. I am worried that the screen has blown, is it possible for a surge or something like that to come down the Ethernet cable and blow the screen?
    Thanks
    Adrian

Display functionality has nothing to do with Ethernet cable. Test with external monitor is very good and on this way you can see if maybe graphic card is responsible for that.
According to your description I believe that display is the problem. Of course, just intensive display test can give more answers.

  • On XP Machine dedicated to Lookout 6.5. The Hypertrends are not moving at proper pace according to the scale at the bottom of the trend graph. After 60 seconds it is 40 seconds behind, so the trace makes up the time with a straight line an repeats.

On XP Machine dedicated to Lookout 6.5.  The Hypertrends are not moving at proper pace according to the scale at the bottom of the trend graph.  After 60 seconds it is 40 seconds behind, so the trace makes up the time with a straight line and then repeats.  Even without any traces on the graph, it does the same thing.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the 6.5 software.  Nothing else runs on this machine.  It is dedicated to Lookout.  I've installed a gauge object, with the same datapoint that the hypertrend is trying to graph, that updates very rapidly with no problem, so doesn't appear to be a network problem.
I'm only tracking one datapoint, at this time, until this issue is solved.  Help please?

    Here is the screen shot.
    Definitions for this post:
     - "streaming data" = Data coming in over ethernet from datapoint that is being polled.
     - "1 scale-second" = 1 second of time based on the scale on the bottom of the graph
Remember that data continues to trace.  However, according to the scale at the bottom of the graph, the graph traces 60 seconds of streaming data in @10 scale-seconds, then displays .01 second of streaming data over 50 scale-seconds.  The .01 second of data is the long straight lines that you see between the rapid data traces that appear to be 50 scale-seconds.
Even without any datapoints being traced, the graph clicks forward 1 scale-second every 6 real-time seconds.  It does this for @10 seconds then clicks forward  @50 scale seconds, instantly.  Then repeats, as you can see in the graph.
The gauge that is on the same control panel, that you see in the screen shot, is tracking the same data point as the graph.  It is polling the data point at real time and never stops updating, so I know that the network is streaming just fine.

  • Imac G5 - screen freezes with patterned screen

Yesterday my Imac G5 suddenly had the whole screen covered with patterns which in turn froze
    the machine up.
Tried using the hardware test (both quick & extended) found nothing wrong.
Tried resetting the Pram & Nvram - made no difference
Tried resetting the SMU - made no difference
Ran Disk Utility to repair permissions - all OK
Used DiskWarrior and no problems found.
Powered off and left it all night and restarted this morning all systems appeared OK
This evening this problem returned and had to power off again which is where I am now.
I have looked thru these forums and found reference to faulty capacitors about bulging, leaking etc
and removed the back but could not see any faults
Any one have any clues as to what the problem is?
I would appreciate some help here please
    Alan

Nobody knows when Apple releases new models, but I think that they usually come out in the spring.
Or sometimes in the fall. In other words, there is no set time.
Try calling http://www.synaptech.com/catalog/ as I suggested, they replace logic boards very reasonably.

  • Mar 09 iMac with vertical green lines

I wrote a post regarding this issue in July and have just now had the chance to take the iMac to the Apple Store. Didn't just add to the post because it has been archived so I'm updating with a new post. I've read lots of posts regarding earlier Intel iMacs but no new gen machines. Has anyone seen this in 2009 iMacs? or is mine "special".
My almost brand new (Mar 2009) iMac has been acting up. Beginning about a week ago at the gray startup screen there has been a band of green vertical lines showing up. The band is about three inches wide and runs from top to bottom of screen. Disbursed between the lines are continuous bursts of green static similar to snow on an old TV set. The lines disappear when the desktop comes up.
Then after a few minutes to a few hours after startup depending on how long the iMac has been turned off the lines begin to appear in the same field on my desktop, usually intermittently dispersed across the three inch field (not as solid as at startup).
I took it in to show a Genius at the AS this afternoon and as soon as he saw the startup screen he said they should have it fixed by the end of the week. He ordered a new board and a new screen for the iMac saying if the board doesn't fix it he'll have them put in the screen to see what that does.
Great service, I'm bummed about the issue and having to drive all the way to Scottsdale and back from Flagstaff. Hope this fixes it. They say they will call me when it's ready to pick up.

Yeah, I know, but all the third party AASPs the Apple Phone Rep ID'd for me In Flagstaff are, from personal experience, bums.
One took two days to determine if my G5 iMac (it was just a year and a half old with bad logic board and PSU caps and covered by Apple Care) was eligible for repair under Apple's extended repair program. They incorrectly decided it wasn't, even though that didn't matter due to the Apple Care coverage.
The other place actually returned the G5 iMac to me in pieces, saying, among other things, "...sorry...".
I took it to Sedona to the Mac Clinic for it's covered repair. That mechanic is great, but usually backed up by two or three weeks.
There is still the great Apple mechanic in Sedona but he is always backed up by about three weeks. So it was off to Scottsdale, probably a half hour longer trip than to the Phoenix store, and an hour longer than to Sedona, but perfectly easy parking because most of the stores in that mall are still under construction.
Ah, life in the big city.
Thanks for the note - probably more response than you needed. Oh, and I do plan to purchase Apple Care - wouldn't be caught with a dead computer without it. Mac's and Apple Care - probably the last good deal in town, though it's been my experience that it's not usually needed, other than the G5 all my Mac's (back to a B&W Mac Classic) are still running.

I do not know what caused it.  The portion of the share file .mov covered with the lines is missing.

Sounds like you are not in a project timeline but a clip timeline. Have you opened a clip in the timeline? If so create a project and edit your clips into the project timeline.

  • Line-Bar Chart with multiple straight lines

    Experts,
I have a requirement where in I have to show multiple straight lines on the Line-Bar Chart. For example if we have a graph of County Names(X) vs Population Count(Y). The bars represent the population in each county. And three straight lines across bars should represent avg. population of all counties, region and state respectively. Is it can be done ? if not line-bar any other graph ? Please let me know your valuable suggestions.

    Hi Tom,
I am afraid that the example that you have mentioned is possible in Line-Bar combo or any other graph. What you are asking for is 1 measure against three dimensions is not possible. How can you represent Country, Region and State on X axis on the same graph???

  • Imac screen grey with vertical stripes

    hi,
i have an imac 24' late 2009 silver, and sometimes the screen suddenly "switches off" and shows a grey screen with thin vertical lines about 1cm apart.  this happened twice this month now, usually when the mac was switched on for a few hours. What can it be ? is the screen broken ? Should i reinstall everything ?

You should run some diagnostics to see if you have a hardware issue first. Where I'd start is running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. It isn't the best test available for testing hardware however it does uncover some problems. If you get an error code you can post it here or Google it to get a clue what it means.
You can also do some basics such as restarting in Safe Mode and doing a SMC and PRAM reset however I don't think those will help from the way you are describing the problem. Resetting both the SMC and PRAM is simple though and it can't hurt.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Mbp screen covered with verticle, pink, one pixel lines

i just got back from class today and opened my mpb and i found the screen to be completely pink. it was cover with tons of one pixel pink vertical lines. when i connect it to my tv, the picture is fine. i also do not have an nvidia chip, so i dont believe its related to that problem. i ran the hardware test and got this error.
    4SNS/1/40000000:TB0T
i also believe my warranty is up with apple, and ideas on what i should do.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The error code indicates a problem with a thermal sensor. I don't know that this has anything to do with your display problem.
Since the video artifact is not evident on the external display, it sounds like you may have a problem with your built in display or its connections.
Do check with Apple and verify if your warranty is up or not. If you are in the last few days, whatever it is will be covered.
    Good luck!

  • My iMAC 27" suddenly displayed thick vertical green lines and then went to a whitish grey screen.  any insight?

While accessing PAGES on my 27" iMAC computer, then screen suddenly displayed thick green vertical lines and then went to a whitish grey screen.  Each time I shutdown and turn back on it shows the same thing and then goes to a blue screen.  The last time I rebooted and I came to this site to try to problem solve.  Any idea?

It sounds like a GPU problem, but I am not sure. Try booting in AHT (Apple Hardware Test) to be sure. Also, if you have another Apple computer, try to boot the other computer with the hard drive from the iMac using target disk mode. While booted on your imac's hard drive, check console for kernel panic logs. Paste only Kernel panic logs not application crash logs here please.

  • Startup screen freezes with vertical lines and a restart message

So this problem just started a couple of days ago it seems to be getting worse. Occasionally it will start-up but not often and at the moment it won't, I just keep getting this screen on start-up: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42697060@N04/3933706005/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/42697060@N04/3934486754/
Not sure if this is the same problem people are having with the video card or not. Thanks for the help!

I'm getting the same look, with all kinds of squares and lines on screen, although mine starts while the computer is running with color reversals and lines on the working space. Then I get a freeze and have to do a hard re-start with the power button, and finally, what you're seeing. I did notice that when I unplugged the power adaptor, the problem has gone away, at least for the past 30 minutes or so.
I originally thought it was overheating, since if I shut it down and left it, it would re-start normally after 15 minutes, but crash again in 10 minutes of running. Then I came here, and read about the video card. That could be, but why only when plugged into the power adaptor? The power adaptor has been acting up lately, in that the light is sometimes off, sometimes amber when screen shows 100%, like that.
I'll plug back and in and see what happens, and put it here. 4:53 PM Saturday.
I'll keep fooling around with it, and report back here. I'll also make an appointment for next week with the nearest Apple store - 1.5 hour drive. Grrrr. I'm home with the flu this weekend. I'm tempted to go now and shake everyone's hand.
