IMac 27" with display-port pc

Hello all!
I'm thinking about buying a used iMac 27" with the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo
iMac10,1
3,06 GHz
4 GB
I'm guessing this is the late 2009 model?
I really want to use this as a monitor for a new desktop I'm building. My question is; will it work with every pc that has graphics card with display-port ?
Many thanks in advance!

Yes, the 10,1 is a late 2009 model. If it will work depends on whether the pc graphics card will supply Mini DisplayPort compliant signals.
Here is some information on using the 27" iMac in Target Display mode:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
Hope this helps.

No, you would need to upgrade the MacBook to a 2011 MacBook Pro that also has Thunderbolt.

  • 2011 iMac missing mini display port?

I'm trying to connect my 2011 iMac to an additional display using the mini display to DVI, but my computer doesn't have a mini display port I can't seem to find this info anywhere. What kind of adapter do I need?

No the thunderbolt port should fit mini display port adapters too........there are just more pins on the same size and shape port.......you sure you have a mini display adapter?

  • T500 With Display Port TV Hookup

I'm starting a new thread here because the other one dating back to January seemed to have gone cold. Hope someone can help with a solution.
I am going from T500 display port to HDMI via an adapter cable and have my audio cables attached to audio ins on the same TV  input as the HDMI. (It is my understanding that the HDMI/display port on the T500 does not support audio.)  I can get sound or picure but not both. Whenever I plug  the HDMI cable into the  TV,  the audio is diabled, unplu HDMI and audio returns. I spoke to Sony (my TV brand) about this at length to someone I think was about as qualified as  the Lenovo techs about my problem and she finally said I needed to change audio out on computer to analog. I  do not know how to do this, probably do not think it necessary and last think it was her way of saying goodbye!
Anyway, I still have the problem. I have connected previous computers through s-video and audio cables and that works fine but, alas, my Lenovo has no s-video.  I would welcome your insights or at least a little intelligent conversation about this.
    Thanks, Dave

Does it work if you plug it into a different source? What if you plug the cable directly into the T500's onboard DisplayPort?

  • Frustration with Display Port

    Hi All,
I am having a really annoying problem. I have a T430 hooked up to a Dell monitor via the Display Port (mini to regular converter, and then a cable that came with the monitor. The cable has a big D on it so I think it's a DisplayPort cable and not HDMI).
After the monitor shuts down due to idle period, I need to unplug and plug in again the cable so it works again. Sometimes I have to do this several times until it takes. Rarely, it causes the computer to freeze entirely and there is no display and no response.
Sometimes, when I play an online game, the transfer to full screen causes it to happen and I need to do the unplug-and-plug trick.
I'm completely updated with Windows and Lenovo updates (via their update tool).
    Has anyone stumbled across this?
    Thanks!

Does nobody know anything about this? It's definitely an issue with the laptop, because going in and out of a game makes it happen and I have to disconnect and reconnect the cable again.

  • Frequent and chronic Slowness on Late 2009 21.5" iMac, Issues with Display, Fan, and Booting

    Hello,
Sorry for the repost, but I realized after the edit period had passed that I left out a lot of information from my original post, and that I misrepresented my problem in the question heading. Because of this, I am posting again with the updated information.
I  am using a 21.5" iMac from Late 2009 with OSX Mavericks 10.9.2.  Recently, I have been experiencing several signs of failure/aging during  use:
    Frequent:
Mail.app slow opening, closing; messages opened in large batches do not get marked as read
Terminal.app experiences noticeable lag when opening (it sometimes takes between 5 and 20 seconds between launching the application and getting an active prompt)
Processes lag or become unresponsive, even when not many applications are running
Browswers frequently become unresponsive, pinwheel, or lag considerably, frequently requiring a force-quit.
    Mouse Pinwheels Frequently
    Intermittent
Computer  generates loudly audible fan noises, persists even when computer is  briefly powered off during a reboot; does not always stop after  rebooting
    Finder often becomes unresponsive
    Rare (one time only)
Machine  powered on in "Safe Boot" mode for no apparant reason; red text reading  "Safe Boot" in menu bar of login screen; background picture slideshow  mode became very glitchy, phased and flashed in horizontal grey bars  before loading next background image
    Chronic (Consistently Happens)
Machine  will not boot if plugged into normal powerpoint after being unplugged  from that power-point; cable must be plugged into a different A/C power  outlet for machine to boot, at which point it can be switched off again,  moved back to the original dedicated outlet, and booted again. This has  never failed to happen, and is mind-boggling.
I followed some instructions from a similar thread,  but I felt that my experiences were sufficiently different that I  couldn't troubleshoot from someone else's solution. I would greatly  appreciate any technical advice and help that the community can offer.

This indicates that your Bootcamp partition is still FAT, which also indicates that the Windows Installer has not been used to reformat it to NTFS yet, as required by Windows Installer. No Windows installation exists yet.

The NVRAM in the Mac (as set by Bootcamp Assistant) is telling it to boot from the built-in Optical drive. Is it fully functional and has Windows Installer media in it or broken? Since no drivers have been loaded, the Keyboard/Mouse which are BT/USB, will not function.
From iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) - Technical Specifications, it has a built-in Optical drive...

Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed

Reads DVDs at up to 8x speed

  • IMac issues with displaying Internet images

Recently my iMac hasn't been displaying some images on the Internet correctly. For example the header of bbc.co.uk/news looks like a TV searching for a scrambled signal, but the rest of the images on the page are fine. There are a few other sites that I'm experiencing the same issue. When I try to save those images, they download with the same scrambled effect. I'm not sure what caused it to do this, but it also started on my Macbook Pro a few days after. It's not the browser because the same thing happens on Chrome, Safari and Firefox. I've tried resetting the cache and PRAM but to no success. Both computers are running OS X 10.9.
I'm not sure how to attach a file on this forum, but here is an imgur link to a screen shot of the problem http://imgur.com/7hGFSqE.
If anyone has seen something like this, please let me know.
    Regards,

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • New MBP thunderbolt to imac 2009 display port?

    Hello,
Im confused.  I have a new late 2011 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt and
a 2009 iMac 27" with Display Port.  If I purchase the thunderbolt cable
can I use that to use the iMac display as an external monitor for the MacBook Pro?
    thanks

    Have a read here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Thunderbolt/10.6/en/30822.html
To use a MiniDisplayPort-iMac as an external display for your ThunderBolt-MacBook Pro you need a MiniDisplayPort-to-MiniDisplayPort cable.
ThunderBolt cable would only work when the iMac also has a ThunderBolt port.

  • IMac does not recognize external monitor using Mini Display Port to HDMI

    Hello,
I have been trying to get an external monitor (HDTV) set up for use with my iMac using a Mini Display Port to HDMI cable I just got. However, when I connect it to my iMac's mini display port, the imac's screen goes black for about a second, then returns, but it does not detect the external display. The other display is just showing a "no signal" message on the screen.
I have restarted, reset PRAM, connected and disconnected the cable several times, tried changing the resolution on the imac, plugged in/out the other display, and clicked the "detect displays" button using the option key in display preferences, but nothing has worked.
I am using an early 2009 iMac running Mavericks.
I've been using the AirParrot app, but it's horrible for video and a little slow.
Can anyone please help sort the issue here? I feel like ive exhausted everything that I know to do.
    Thanks.

I am having the same issue.  Hope Apple can fix this soon!!!

  • Macbook pro thunderbolt to Imac Mini Display Port

    Hello everyone,
As the title above says I would like to use my Imac (27 inch, Late 2009) as a moniter for my Macbook Pro ( 15 inch, Early 2011). As you may know Macbook Pro has a Thunderbolt port on it and I was wondering if it is compatable to go to my Imac's Mini Display port?
Thunderbolt > Mini Display Port ( Use as moniter not data trasnfer )
If anyone can sheed some light on this area I would be very thankful!

dsimagry, Mark wasn't asking about a Mid 2011 iMac, he was asking about a mid 2010 iMac with a 2011 MBP. That link is not applicable.
Mark, I have a similar setup (same iMac, 2012 MBP with thunderbolt) and have been working on it for a while. While the Thunderbolt ports are supposedly backwards compatible with the Mini DisplayPort interface, a bunch of reading (and an experimental purchase (and subsequent return) of a $70 Thunderbolt cable to try it out) indicates that you can't do that with a Thunderbolt cable but that a Mini DisplayPort <--> Mini DisplayPort cable should work.
As I'm in Canada, it's been a right pain to get one of those (less selection on our Amazon than yours) but I finally got one and only just tried it out this morning. It _DOES_ work, but there are some display refresh/jaggies issues on the iMac. I don't know if that's maybe because the MBP is running on battery at the moment & doesn't have enough power to consistently drive the larger display or whether there's something else wrong, but I'll be spending the remainder of my long weekend trying to figure that out. The issue is that any mouse movement on the screen causes bands of what looks like loss of frame sync 'static'.
I'll let you know here if what I eventually figure out. On the up side, this is by FAR the closest I've gotten so far.

  • Window PC via IMac as display port??

    Hi
Wanted to know can i use an Imac as an display port for an Windows  PC??
Reason need to contact work pc  and want to have Imac as main computer on desk.

The above is supported in the late-2012 iMacs as the Tech specs state:
If you are using the Apple aluminum keyboard, you can toggle between the PC and OS X display with command+F2.

  • Display Port DVI HDMI no longer interfaces my TV with 10.7 lion.

I have used successfully used my LG 720p tv with a Apple branded Display port --> GE branded Dvi adapter followed by a dvi --> HDMI adapter directly into my TV.
Upon upgrading to Lion (10.7) two days ago I discoverd that my MacBook Pro no longer recongizes the connection. Both the Mac and TV initially try to interface (Macbook bluescreens, TV says connecting) I've checked all the connections and nothing seems to be broken.
I have also tried my other Display port --> VGA adapter and this also unsuccessfully links...
Has anyone expierenced other issues with display port functionality after the upgrade to Lion?

I am also having a similar issue with my MBP 17" Mid 2010 and my LG tv. It flashes and tries to connect but doesn't successfully pair. Both over HDMI and VGA.
