Imac 6,1 intel based core 2 duo (running Lion) will not boot.

I hope this isn't too much insight - I have never posted (not being very good with computers and not having had a problem before) - but often see frustration when someone posts sans detailed t-shooting information.
My 2006 model Imac (Intel core 2 duo, 2.16GHZ, 4 MB L2 CPU cached/shared, running OS 10.7 Lion) suddenly shuts down during each boot.  I still have my original installations disks, plus the Leopard and Snow Leopard disks on hand).    I do not have Time maching but have a 500GB external HD I had before Time maching came out.  Alas- it was a Sipleshare NAS drive - and I have some items on the Imac not back-up that I need (I know.. hindsight stings).
So - in order, here is what I have tried so far:
Step 1 - Apple hardware test:  installed orig install disk, held down D as Imac booted.  Ran test - all successful.
Step 2 - manual that came with Imac said to:  press power button, ad then simultaneously press Command, Option, P, & R keys until I hear start-up sound a second time.  Heard the 2nd start-up sound.  It starts to boot, a progress bar starts, and then shuts down.
Step 3:  Tried to set Imac in Target mode (using my 2009 Macbook Pro as host with 800-800 firewire with these instructions (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661) ) to get to the data and save.  No dice.  Imac displayed the slowly bouncing target mode icon (which excited me) - but Macbook did not see a firewire connection.
Step 4:  Tried an 800 - 400 firewire connection with target mode (since imac supports both) just to try another cable.  Macbook still does not see firewire connection.
Step 5:  I inserted my original Mac OS X install disc 1 that came with the Imac in 2006 and held down the "C" key.  It booted to the "Mac OS X Installer" screen.  From there I ran Disk Utility - with the following results:
Step 6 - verify disk:
Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"
Verifying HFS plus volume
Checking Extents Overflow file
Checking Catalog file
invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired
Error:  The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
     volume needs repair
Step 7:  Tried to repair disk
Verifying and Repair disk "Macintosh HD"
Checkig HFS plus volume
Checking Extents Overflow file
Checking Catalog file
invalid node structure
Volume check failed
Error:  The underlying task reported failure on exit
1HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Step 8  - within this same "Disk Utility" - if I select (from top menu) "Images" and "verify" - or "convert" -  I can browse and actually see my files - but they are excruciatingly grayed out (tantalizingly close but unreachable).  I would love dearly to be able to access these files but I have as yet not cracked that nut.
Step 9 - Selected "utilities - Startup Disk" - and three options are avail:
Step 9A:  tried starting from HD (which I knew would not work, but tried just for t-shooting thoroughness)
Step 9B:  tried starting from "Mac OS X, 10.4.8 install disk 1" (which just loads the same "Mac OS X Installer" screen I was already in).
Step 9C:  tried starting from the final option "Network startup" (I have an ethernet connection to my router for internet, which I know is online as this Macbook Pro is connected to the same router).  Once I restart in "Network Start-up" mode - a flashing globe appears for a minute or so, followed by the Apple logo.  A progress bar appears below for about 30 seconds, and then I simply see the Apple logo with the gray "wheel" spinning below it - even 90 minutes later with no sign that it is succeeding.
Summary:  I feel like I have exhausted whatever I can feebly attempt, but I'm a neophyte when it comes to computers and all of this has been just me searching, reading, and methodically trying one thing after another.  I'm hoping that the far smarter here in this forum who have had the patience to read all of this might have a recommendation that will at least allow me to salvage the data I can "almost" see when in Disk Utility/Image/Verify browse mode! Thanks so much for the help and insight!  Joe.

my macbook pro running lion will not boot . it stays on the grey page with the cog spinning. I have tried all methods of booting to no avail. there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

  • Macbook pro running, lion will not boot

My mac book, pro running lion will not complete the start up/boot have tried single user boot, and command v any ideas

I had the same problem... I was downloading the latest update (whatever it was for, I forget at this point)...
I was really frustrated because I have never had to troubleshoot my MacBook Pro (early 2008 or whatever was before the black bevel/chicklet keyboard), plus I was running Lion, so I did not know how to do any recovery.
Cmd + R worked like a charm. Repaired my disk, repaired my permissions, then reinstalled (or restored) Lion... now my computer is actually running better than before!
The Disk Repair feature in Lion works magic!

  • Imac intel 2 core duo running at 117 Fº. Is this healthy?

my imac intel 2 core duo running at 117 Fº. Is this healthy? The fan speeds are ODD: 998 CPU: 1198 HDD: 1199.

What you need to understand is that your processor has two different temperatures. The temperature that escapes when it leaves the processor dye is called the t case. The temperature for each core is called the tcore. If your processor temp were to be a problem one or two things can happen. The system will shut down immediately to protect itself. For quad core temperatures for example, it will shut itself down at some point at 75-80 degrees Celcius. Operating temperature of about 40-60 C when the system is fully stressed is a target temperature.

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

  • IMac 27 inch i7 OSX Lion will not boot up from Hard Disc

iMac 27 inch i7 OSX Lion will not boot up from Hard Disc on cold start, and cannot find wifi hardware in the machine.   Restart and everything is fine.   I have two machine and they behave the same.   Software or hardware problem?

First of all, try a hard restart; making sure no disks are in the slot, unplug everything from your computer (keyboards, mice, etc.) and then unplug the computer itself. Leave it unplugged for a minute or two, then plug it back in and boot it up.
If that fails, reboot it while holding down the option-key on your keyboard. The screen should show a choice of which disk drive to boot from. Choose your usual drive.
If that fails, reboot it while holding down the shift-key on your keyboard. It should take a while for it to boot up, as it is destroying all connections to sources that may contain a virus.
If that fails, reboot it while holding down keys "option-command-P-R" until you hear the startup tone a second time.
If that fails, reboot it while holding down the C-key. Make sure you have inserted the installation disk before doing this step.
If that fails, reboot it while holding down the command-key and the R-key.
If that fails, please reply to this and let me know.

  • While upgrading my 3,2 8 core power Mac , it will not boot. Going from 10.8.3 to 10.8.4. There is no visible video after chime.  I need to get up and running ASAP.  Could the video drivers have not loaded. Please help and thank you. Ps. Main drive ssd.

The Mac will not boot to a cd, Mac or disk warrior.
It will run for  10 minutes with no video, then shut itself down.
I've attempted Cd boot, zapping Pram, safe mode,
My new Dell monitor power light pulses as if no video is present
Wondering if the vid.  driver did not load during update?
Can't seem to light one pixel, no matter what.
    Thanks.
Mac Pro 8 core 32 gigs ram gtx285 card
512GB  ssd.  3 other slots 1,5 TB seagates.
    Thanks for reading and responding

Update on this issue. I replaced the video card with an old one that I had and it boots fine.
Question, if a driver were missing from the update process, would I see anything on the screen at all. I had pure black as if no signal was carried to the monitor. I'm trying to rule out hardware failure, as this card is 1.5 years old.
    thanks!!!

  • Can my MBP (April 2006, Core Duo) run Lion?

...Or does Apple have me in a corner again?

Sorry to contradict OrangeMarlin but only the Late 2006 MBP (and later) models do have a Core 2 Duo which is the minimum processor for Lion.
The Eraly and Mid 2006 MBPs have a Core Duo processor and therefor don't meet the requirements for OSX Lion:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

  • Macbook with external monitor, running Lion, will not go to sleep

I have software version 10.7.5 and my macbook will not go to sleep on its own.  It will go to sleep if I hit the power button and then tell it to go to sleep.  I have turned off all sharing and I have set the preferences to sleep after 15 minutes.  Yet, I hear the hard drive spinning all of the time.  Any suggestions??

Have you reset the SMC? If not, try that.

  • IMac running Lion will not read windows 7 dvd

    Hello-
I am currently trying to partition a part of my hard drive to run Windows 7. I open boot camp assistant and get all the way to where it says "install", I insert the windows 7 dvd and my imac spins it then spits it back out. I have tried several different things yet the results are all the same. I thought the drive may be bad so I tried a normal dvd and a cd, both read fine. I then tried an apple install dvd (lion) and the imac could not read that disc. So the problem seems to be that my computer just can't read install or data dvd's. Has anyone else had this issue?

If you want to run MS Windows Simultaneously with OS X you can buy either Parallels or VMWare Fusion. Follow the installation instructions for the app you choose, both do the same thing. There are several advatages of using Parallels or Fusion including:
    1. Running OS X & Windows simultaneously
    2. You can run Windows XP, Vista and/or Windows 7
You can also use Boot Camp which comes with OS X to run Windows 7. The downside is you can only run one operating system at a time, either MS Windows or OS X. If you are a Windows gamer this is the best option for 3D gaming. In order to install follow the instructions in Boot Camp Assistant, you can find BCA in Applications - Utilities - Boot Camp Assistant and then follow the on-screen instructions.

  • Core Duo Macbook Pro will not shut down

For some reason, my computer no longer lets me shutdown, restart, or logout. Has anybody had a problem like this?
    Jon

Based on your description, it may suggest a conflict within permissions. You can verify permissions to see if your system identifies a conflict or otherwise perform the repair. The process will not compromise or harm anything with your Mac so it’s worth a shot.
    Repair Permissions:
    Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    Select: your Hard Drive
    Select: the First Aid tab
    Select: Repair Permissions

  • MacBook Pro 13 2010 running Mountain Lion: will not boot and shows a folder with a flashing question mark. Will not start in 'safe mode' i.e holding shift on start up - nor can I call up any utilities with the OSX shortcuts. Any thoughts?

Following an automatic update, the machine wouldn't boot. Screen came on (shows white) - then either showed a 'No-Entry' Sign and a spinning cog, or a folder with a qusetion mark. I  tried to start the machine in different modes ( eg. holding shift after the tone ) but nothing worked. after leaving the machine alone for 1 hour. It worked perfectly again. I did a 'verify disk' check which found no problems. 2 hours later it then froze ( In - Photoshop). Could not force quit, so shut down, and have not been able to boot again since (white lit screen - flashing folder with question mark) . I have also taken the hard drive out and checked the connections which seem fine. Any suggestions? - Is the Hard Drive dead. : other info : It was also running parallels 8, with Windows 7. at the time of the update....
