IMac/Bootcamp

I may be completely mistaken, but I seem to have read somewhere that my iMac (coming up 5 years old) is no longer able to support a Bootcamp installation of Windows. Is this true, and if so, does that also apply to Parallels or VM Fusion? Thanks in advance for all help.
System spec = iMac 2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo - 3Gb 667 DDR2 SDRAM - ATI
Radeon X1600 256Mb VRAM - 250Gb Serial ATA hard drive. Mac OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.  Model Identifier:iMac5,1

As you have been advised Boot Camp will work fine however on Snow Leopard and Lion it will only run Windows 7. Therefore if you have Windows XP or Vista you will need to upgrade to Windows 7.
BTW there is a Boot Camp forum too, if you have more specific Boot Camp questions that is where the Boot Camp MS Windows guys hang out. You can find it by clicking Boot Camp .

  • Is iMac, Bootcamp and Windows XP 100% a PC

My friend and his wife own an accounting practice with 4 staff.
They use IRIS Accountancy Practice Software, which itself uses the latest SQL Server technology and Microsoft Windows XP.
He has a PC at home, which his wife uses to work on the office system.
He needs to replace a PC and is attracted to the iMac for home – attractive, space saving, etc.
He is not technical and relies 100% on third party support who also supply his PC’s.
IRIS and the support company say the IRIS software will not run on Apple.
I have tried to persuade them that with an iMac, Bootcamp and Microsoft Windows XP he will be running IRIS on a PC not on an Apple. Am I correct?
Does anybody have experience (good or bad) of such a set up?
Is the iMac with Bootcamp and XP, 100% a PC? This is a business decision and he will not buy the iMac without 100% confidence.

MacBook Pro was rated as one of the top three Vista laptops and supports 64-bit versions.
I think running on Apple meant "doesn't run on PowerPC" actually, and there are programs of course that aren't ported to OS X.
A lot of IT organizations run servers as virtual environment to better use idle resources and lower costs. Apple's Xserve is often used for running Windows 2008 or any other flavor.
You might even want to look at VMware products and run XP inside OS X.
You can't run OS X as a VM except in OS X server, which is a shame, great for testing.
    Your iMac is Intel Mac.
Compaq was one of the first, along with a German company, to provide "100% IBM Compatible" ISA hardware. Eventually, it became "PC" rather than the longer name, microprocessor (with mini and mainframe being the other two main architectures).

  • Windows brutally slow on my iMac (Bootcamp)

    Hey guys,
first of all I would like to say sry, if my english isn't propper enough and lacks sometimes. I'm from germany...but anyway, here's my problem. ;-)
I have an 21,5 inch iMac mid 2011 with an intel i5, 4gb memory, AMD Radeon HD 6750 512 mb and a 500 GB Harddrive ( NOT SSD!! ).
All in all my iMac is working well with Mavericks on it but since last year I'm still trying to get windows work properly on it, but it just doesn't.
I tried different ways of installing windows on it. Through the normal BootCamp process, through a USB install method and also with a way, to install windows with VMware. It's a bit tricky cause you first start installing windows through the virtual machine, though it gets installed on a partition as a windows partition, just like bootcamp. But no matter what I tried, my windows is just slow, specially on the startup.
My last way to install it was this: I reinstalled mavericks, comepltley clean install. Updated mavericks, started bootcamp and went through the normal installation process. The bootcamp support software gets downloaded, a partition gets created and then it restarts to boot from CD to install windows then. In this case it is windows 8.1, but i tried it with 8 and also with 7 and it makes no difference. The installation process works well, without any problems. The drivers from the current bootcamp support software mostly gets installed automaitcally when windows starts the first time, if not, is just start the steup exe from within the support software. So far so good.
Now I finally will come to my problem...:D
Windows just runs slow like sh**. The boot process until i can log into my account works well, I have for example not the problem with the blinking cursor at the windows boot, like lot of people had. I'm within 23 seconds or so at the login window but then it's just horrible. When I type in my password it takes like 12 seconds to get me to the desktop and once Im on it, it takes 20-30 seconds more to get windows running so that I can open an internet browser. For example Skype, which I have in my autostart, takes at least 20 seconds to open and that's just not normal. I tried a lot, believe me....I tried disabling all the autostart programs, though I dont wanna disable them in general, cause I need a few in the autostart, but it didnt make a difference anyway. Even when I enable the automatic login that I dont have to type in my password, it makes no difference. Windows takes just years to get ready once Im on the desktop.
And again, all the drivers are up to date, I installed them from the newest bootcamp support software and even checked manually if updates are avaible.
To me it just seems that something is going wrong with the driver load at the beginning of windows. My hard drive istn broken as well, cause mavericks is running without any problems and also i checked the drive with many tools for problems. Yes, I defragmanted my drive under windows and I actually did everything you find on the interent. But still, it just makes no difference. I know that windows is propably not so fast at the start up but what I see isnt normal. I saw many macs on youtube with bootcamp windows on its and windows was running completley normal on it.
I mean, its not normal that it takes me up to 1 minute from the moment i type in my password, to get a browser open and google the internet. Oh and before I forget it, when I have a anti virus software installed and takes even longer...when i disable all anti virus malware else what programs, it gets a bit quicker, but i guess the problem sitll exist. Also I dont log into my windows with an internet microsoft account, its an offline sign in. Just saying that cause a lot of people on the internet say that the internet login can be slow someitmes.
So I have no more ideas what to do but I'm pretty sure there is a problem, it's not normal that it takes that long. I recently took a look into some boot log file on windows, dont know exactly what it was but there were many startup items which were causing problems and a slow startup proces. For example the "windows driver module" with the error code 101 took 9 seconds to load. But I have no clue about that boot analyze stuff, so I cant say more about that.
EDIT: One important note I should make, is, that after it takes that long to work properly, it runs pretty fast and nromal then. Its not that slow the whole time! It's just the start proces or better the login process, what I am talking about. Once the "years" are over whene I log into windows, it runs well then. Thats why I think something with the drivers isnt working properly. Also, in the moment when it takes that long, my hard drive is 100% in use when i look into the task manager...
I hope someone of you can help me and I'm looking forward to hopefully hear from you!!
    again: sry for my english.
    Cheers!
    Max

Well...I have already checked msconfig and the automatic startup items. I have looked for all the non-microsoft things and disabled them, to see if it makes a difference. But it makes no difference. Disabling microsoft things in the msconfig isn't really what I wanna do, cause I have no clue about these system files.
I have also checked a boot analyze section to see if, and what causes trouble at the start. There were a couple of things which slowed down my start process. One thing that seemed to causes a lot trouble was a file called "windows driver installer module" or something like that. But its a system file, I cant simply delete it or something.
And before you say now: check for the newest drivers...I have the up to date drivers from the bootcamp support software and also checked manually for maybe an update. But it is as up to date as it gets. If it isn't a "bootcamp" issue, what is it then? I would agree with you that it isn't a bootcmap issue, cause bootcamp pretty much does nothing except downloading the support software and making a useless fat32 partition to boot off from...well if you have the usb install optoin, bootcamp does a bit more for you. But anyway... Whatever the problem is, it can't be solved be reinstalling windows or something like that. I reinstalled it many times, windows 7, 8 or 8.1. I fromated the whole system with mavericks to start it over then again, but there are still these problems. 14 seconds waiting when I type in my password, 30-40 seconds more once im on the desktop, until I can open a browser. The strange thing is, after that time, everything works well and windows is running fast..
You said, that almost have the same imac as me. So how exactly did you install windows? Was it like: You started bootcamp downloaded the support software on a usb drive, made a partition and booted off from an install ddvd to install windows?
Cause thats what I did, which is exactly the way it should be....Did you install windows only on a partition on your main hard drive or on a second hard drive?

  • Imac Bootcamp installation without cd drive

hello I want to buy the new Imac. And I want to install Windows 7 on it with Bootcamp. But how can I install Windows 7 without a Cd Drive. Maybe on a USB Stick? but how does it work?

You need a .iso image with Windows 7 to create the USB drive. You'll download the .iso if you've purchased Windows 7 as a download from the Microsoft Store. If you've the iso, open Boot Camp Assistant and follow steps

P.s: a friend of mine who owns one of those original Apple superdrive that came with the mac Mini, do you think it might work?

Hi Sam, the Mini Optical may draw too much USB power.
Can you restore that .iso to the Flash Drive as a CD/DVD instead of an image file?

  • Windows 7 on iMac (BootCamp) won't wake up

I have Windows 7 (32-bit) installed via BootCamp on my iMac Mac OS X 10.6.3. When Windows goes to sleep, it will not wake up. I have to restart the machine & W7 then "resumes". I saw another thread pertaining to his on a notebook, but the driver fix suggested seems to not apply to this desktop. Thanks.

Did you install the Apple drivers once Windows was up and running?
    Those are necessary.
Alter the power options then. Disable hibernation for now.

  • Late 2012 imac bootcamp error"Non system disk, press any key to reboot"

    Hey all,
I'm having all sorts of issues with getting windows 7 installed through bootcamp. I have the late 2012 imac 27 inch fusion i7 16 gigs of ram 680gtx. I downloaded the latest bootcamp drivers to my usb after i re-formated it. Partitioned the drive 200 gig windows 700 gigs mac. It restarts and then i get this error screen, "non-system disk.(see photo below) Press any key to reboot." which of course is unresponsive. I hard reset with the Option held into boot back into mac. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. Please, any help would be appreciated. I have a unopened copy of Bioshock Infinite waiting for me

The Macs with a built-in Optical drive use the Windows DVD, because that is what BC tells it to be set to. The USB is not made bootable on such machines.

MacBook Air (Mid 2011 and later), MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 and later, including Retina models), Mac mini (Mid 2011 and later), and iMac (Late 2012) can install downloaded (ISO) versions of Windows 7 and 8.

  • How to install Windows XP on new iMac - Bootcamp or Parallels?

    Hi
I'm very new to the Mac world. I just purchased a lovely new iMac.
I would like to install my Windows XP Professional (SP3) on to my iMac.
I purchased Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac and before I do anything, I want to know what I should do first.
Do I install the Windows disk through bootcamp first and then install Parallels Desktop 5?
    or
Can I bypass bootcamp all together and install Windows through Parallels?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    amatxilinda

Parallels 6 comes out on the 14th.

If you will never want to run Windows natively, then you don't need Boot Camp. Otherwise, install first on its own partition, get it setup, then Parallels, and only then activate. Or reactivate. After you have Parallels Tools installed.
Really ought to check on Parallels forum.

  • 24" Imac / Bootcamp / Warranty

    Hi all,
I purchased a 24" Imac from apple on the 25th September 2006. Since its purchase it has never worked with boot camp (windows installs and then crashes when the apple drivers (graphics driver) are installed).
I am fully aware that because OS/X works fine and bootcamp is beta I cannot claim under my warranty, and that I must wait until Leopard is released before it can be sorted with a warranty claim.
However if leopard does not come out before september (its due october I believe) where will I stand? My machine will be out of warranty and I feel that I should not have to pay for either a new logic board or applecare as it has been faulty since day one.
    Anybody got any advice?

Hi, a question - how can AppleCare be so cheap on
    ebay? ..L
    Hi L!
Extreme high/low prices are usually due to auction luck/distress sales.
Low average selling price possibly reflects an inability to touch a product at time of purchase as well as reflects a certain amount of risk of non-delivery/dis-satisfaction.
While some AppleCares other than the iMac/eMac seem about as low as ever on eBay, the going prices for iMac/eMac AppleCares have risen, either due to increased demand/decreased offerings, or due to some seasonal factors. Last time I checked (during 2006), there were numerous completed transactions under $100.
Searching "applecare" and "apple care" on U.S. eBay from July 5 to July 20:
    19 were offered for sale
    2 did not sell ($107.00 & $128.98)
17 sold at average price of $116.73 (delivered)
    high/low price (del'd.) $132.50/101.00
    second highest/lowest price (del'd.) $128.98/107.00
price dispersion of the 17 sales:
    $101.00
    4 @ 107
    109.49
    113.90
    114.00
    2 @ 116.00
    2 @ 124.01
    2 @ 124.74
    127.10
    128.98
    $132.50
The above appears to be a fairly typical eBay pattern.

  • IMac Bootcamp: windows support software

Hi! Recently I installed windows 7 on my iMac. It installed perfectly however, it is like certain drivers are missing.
I did some research and discovered that the windows support software is actually important. So I downloaded the software from the Bootcamp application and put it on my USB. I booted in windows and attempted to install it but windows said:  Bootcamp x64 is unsupported on this computer model.
How can I fix this? It is the latest support software.
If this helps: iMac late 2009. Intel core 2 duo @ 2.66. 8 gb ram.

You will find better support for Boot Camp in the Boot Camp forum.

i have a 2.8 core 2 24" imac. I installed win 7 successfully using bootcamp, however it says bootcam is not supported for my computer model while installing bootcamp support software. What should i do? By the way its x64

Make sure that you are using the right version of BootCamp - version 5 is the newest and works with Windows 7 64bit, but does not work with your computer, which is an older Intel model.

  • Aladdin eToken Pro compatability with Windows on iMac (bootcamp)

I am in the process of buying a computer for my home office. I am a technical writer documenting maritime chart systems, and therefore I have to run Win 7/8 for the chart system.  The chart system uses Aladdin eToken Pro (Java 72k) for licensing purposes, and before I buy I need to know whether it is compatible with an iMac running Windows.
I will be using bootcamp for Windows 7/8, and the iMac I'm looking at is the 2014 base 27" non-retina.
I have investigated this with the chart provider that requires the use of eToken, and they have no idea if there are any bumps in the road.
Looking forward to any insight you could offer me.

If you look closely you see that EFI64 (UEFI 2.x) is the demarcation line of 2008 between support or not is EFI firmware.
2006-7 and you get the EFI menu prompt with 64-bit Vista and 7. Mac Pro and others pre-2008. Apple's idea of supported or not may not be ours. If you want to troubleshoot yourself.
BC 3.0 - built during the summer, before Windows Oct 22nd, buggy, and rushed. Often due to the HFS read feature, just rename "AppleHFS.sys" to something else is often enough. Not sure why your system is having trouble without knowing more.

  • Imac/bootcamp/windows

I am new to boot camp and want to run windows for just a few applications like Quickbooks.  Where do I purchase Windows and is there a certain version I need to buy to run it in bootcamp on my imac or can I just buy it straight from Microsoft?
I would prefer to download it immediately online but it seems like I have to wait for the disc in the mail.  I want Windows 7, not Windows 8 because I hear 8 is horrible.

What you hear is people get attached to one thing, don't know how to minimize Metro and probably have not used 8.1
you dont need to run Windows natively. A VM will do fine for what you say you want.
Windows 7 OEM System Builder. if you had Amazon Prime it would be there in 2 days, Friday ordering now. Or Newegg longer. Two most popular.

  • New iMac bootcamp XP sp2 no internet no audio

I'm having a bit of trouble getting my wireless connection and audio to work on XP professional sp2. I have a week old 24" iMac. I ran bootcamp, installed XP, inserted the OSX install disc1 to update the drivers, and still no internet nor audio. When I go to network settings, my wireless network is not appearing... and instead a 1394 (firewire) network is showing as active... but of course that doesn't do anything for my internet connection.
    Any ideas?

I have the same problem. No audio or internet. Can't adjust the volume in the control panel because the volume control is grayed out. An active ethernet network is detected but no internet connection.
I installed Win XP Pro SP2 from an OEM disc, which I was assured is identical to the retail version (which is no longer available).
Installation via bootcamp was anything but smooth and I first thought it wouldn't work.
    Used the FAT32 format.
