IMac Fade to black on steroids

I am curious about how many others are experiencing this strange crash. Everythings going along fine and suddenly the mac crashes as if the plug got yanked from the wall. No warning, no freeze, no hangup spinning disk action. It always happens during a mouse click and is not application related.
I've had apples since the iiC in 84 and great luck and customer service. I finally got to a specialist and he had me erase hard drive and reinstall. (ARRRGH) No other added aps. It worked fine all day then suddenly did it again. Incidently before the reinstall it also lost the abilty to get online.
I am inclined to think it's a software issue because it's never happened without a mouse click initiated.
Naturally the tech claimed it was new to him but said if it happens again he may want this one back for them to inspect. I'm guessing they would send a new one. Alas, it may also have the same fault.
btw i figured the subject line may draw more replies to this specific issue tham 'help' or 'um' etc.

well considering that after a erase and clean install it only happened one time all day vs about 20 times the first day or so I am more inclined to think it's a software glitch. I think I can live with that alot easier knowing it will be resolved rather than a mega run of hardware probs. If it is hardware I will wait awhile before exchanging macs

  • My display starts up with a black screen or fades to black after being on.

So just recently when I would turn my mac on, it starts up with just a black screen. The computer is on just no display. Sometimes it will take multiple times of restarting the computer to get the display to come on. When the display is finally on and working fine I found out that if I touch the top of the iMac near the iSight the screen will then slowly fade to black. And of course, the only fix is to restart. Anyone have a similar problem? Unfortunately I didn't purchase the extended warranty and my computer is one month past the 1 year mark. Thank you.

Restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and release them when you hear the second startup chime; this clears a setting which causes it to start up into verbose mode each time.

  • Macbook pro 13 screen fades to black?

Does any other owner of a mid 2010 MBP 13" (puchased 2/11) have this weird problem: when the laptop is warmed up, the screen randomly dims then fades to black then in a few seconds lights up again. In addition, while the screen fades, the lights look like, oddly, stage lighting. I have already had the whole screen replaced (the whole top), but it still persists. On my next call to Apple Support they told me this is reported by others and "they are working on it" and to look for a firmware update. All fine and dandy, but I have frustration in the meantime. I and my family have been owners of many mac products since 1990. They are all great products and now that I have a real issue, I am banking on great support.

There are two other discussions about a similar topic.  See if resetting the SMC helps...otherwise, the other recommendation is to take it in for service.

  • Why is it, if i have one video clip in the timeline, i can't just add a transition at the end of that solo clip to fade to black!?! please help!

hey there, so im making a video for a family event..
i drag in an audio clip all of a sudden this becomes the be all and end all, and i want to sync some vid clips to that audio track, so let's say i drag in a 10 second video clip, at the end of the 10 seconds, i want to add a transition to fade to black.. i go to the transition window.. choose the cross dissolve or fade to colour, but it will not allow me to drag it on that video clip.. it always ends up on the audio track. this bloody application is so confusing compared to final cut. please help!

Ahhh, now I see the problem, Grasshopper.  Problem is, we are all Grasshoppers, here.
Yes, that little piece of info is critical. I'd say the biggest difficulty with FCPX is the whole new language.
If I read you correctly, your Audio is in the Main Storyline (Track 1 in plain old Editorese). This makes anything else you add (above or below) a "connected clip", which we can no longer think of as "Track 2" because Jobs sez so. So, yes, you cannot just add a transition to either end of a connected clip.
No argument with Tracy's solution, because I haven't seen any other general solution presented for any attempt to treat connected clips as the main storyline.  And, of course, when they were "track 1" and "track 2", you could.
An alternative solution, however, is to highlight the connected clip and press Ctrl-V to bring up the Video Animation Editor.  Click the "reveal button" for Compositing: Opacity (bottom, right).  Once open, there is a "fade handle" to the right top.  Drag it left for however much fade you wish.  (there is one on the left as well, but you were only talking about a fade-out.)
A second alternative, perhaps for future projects where everything keys on audio, may be to create a Gap clip (used to be called slug) in the primary storyline before ever dropping in the audio.  Then you can add video to the main story line and modify it without having to go thru hoops to do the simplest thing.

  • Why does the display on my 27" iMac keep going black?

This seems to be happening very often now. It started with just every once in a while.
I will be using my iMac and the display goes black. It does NOT go to sleep. Just the display goes black. I do video and audio editing on my iMac and if I am listening to playback or a song while the screen goes black, I can still hear it. So, I know it has not gone to sleep.
A way that I have gotten around this is by, once the display goes black I will then push the power button to make the iMac go to sleep. Then, I will push it again to wake it up. This usually works and the iMac will work just fine afterwards. Now what is happening, the iMac will go black again after a few seconds of being turned back on from sleep.
I tried to run a diagnostic with an Apple person over the phone and for some reason my iMac will not respond to this.
AND... It has gotten worse. I can't even boot up my iMac from a power down without the display going black.
    Any help?

  • My iMac turns to black sometimes and need to restart it and then turns black again in 2 to 15 mins... how do i solve this problem?

My imac turns to black someitmes. And I need to restart it... sometimes it works good for like 30 min, sometimes it turns black again even when i was typing in my password and need to restart it again and again untill i really angry that i have to leave it alone as i am going to break it.
So, how do i solve this black screen issue?
I can still hearing the musics and vedios and games that are playing.

It sounds like you are having a overheating issue.
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...

  • Apples update didn't work for me: Boot Camp: iMac displays a black screen during installation of Windows 7

Boot Camp: iMac displays a black screen during installation of Windows 7 - Apple Support
I have followed each of the steps listed in the link above with no success.
Prior to adding the extra drivers I was able to start the Windows install process up to reformatting the "Windows" Bootcamp drive. After that the computer would go through some instal processes and eventually restart. After the restart the screen would go black. The black screen lead me to the  Apple Support link above dated March 5 2015. After going through steps listed in the link above, I get an error message stating that the D:\Sources\instal.win. file cannot be located. I am forced to restart the computer at that point and theWindows install process attempts to start again but always ends up at the same point.
Note: I am installing windows 7 Pro from a DVD. I scanned the AutoUnattend.xml file and noticed that it refers to "Windows 7 ULTIMATE" but not "Pro" or any others that I could see. (see below). Could that be part of the issue?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Here is an over-simplified explanation of WIM and CLG files. Assume your DVD Media contains

    W7- Professional
    W7- Home Premium
    W7- Home Basic
    WIM Files
    File1
    y

    File3
    y
    File4
    y
    y
    File4
    y
    y
    y
The File .wim will contains a compressed image which contains File [1...5].
The W7-Ultimate .clg will have 5 entries, with all set to 'Y'.
The W7-Professional .clg will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','Y','Y'.
The W7-Home Premium  .clg will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','N','Y'.
The W7-Home Basic .clg file will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','N','N'.
This allows a single .wim Image file on the DVD media to be used to install any of the 5 flavors of Windows. When you enter your product key, the Installer knows what specific W7 variant you have the key for and will tell the WIM to extract the specific files the installer needs to be extracted.
    The following line
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 ULTIMATE" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
is telling that a retail product key will be entered, which should go look for this specific .clg file (from the five you already have on disk).  You can test if it will work for you by changing this line to the following
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
If it does not work, the other issue can be related to device discovery. Typically A: and B: device names are reserved for Floppy Drives. C: is your internal HDD.
D: can either point to the Optical drive, or the USB. The normal convention is that the removable media is named from Z: backwards. Y: and Z: are usually used for Network drives, so X: should be your USB. First try with the change to "Professional". If it does not work,

  • Why can't I use the fade to black and white option in iMovie '11?

I have a project that uses a few photos with one minute duration timers I want to slowly fade from color to black and white but the fade to options are all greyed out... Am I over looking something or doing something wrong?

    Exiled Angel wrote:
....it's the color in the pictures I want to gradually reduce the saturation on until they are black and white before the transitions start, not fade in or out to a black or white screen like you are suggesting.
Sorry, but I wasn't suggesting that you use Fade to Black or Fade to White, just explaining what they do, given that you used the term "fade" in your first post. I assumed you may have been using the Fade to Black transition (which won't achieve what you want).
I suggested that you use Cross Dissolve, but I need to explain further how to achieve the effect you are looking for. First, you need to place a copy of the photo directly after the original. Make sure Ken Burns is turned off - use Fit. Now double-click on the copy to bring up the Clip Inspector. Click on Effects and select Black & White, then click Done. Drag a Cross Dissolve transition between the 2 clips (photos) and adjust the duration to your liking in the Inspector. Now you will see the effect your are looking for.
The key is to have an exact copy of the photo following the original, then change the copy to Black and White (or Sepia or any other effect), then insert the Cross Dissolve (or Cross Blur etc.) transition.
Hope that''s what you are looking for!

  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks

  • After screen replacement, top half of screen starts by looking normal but then fades to black while bottom half stays bright but with images blury. What might went wrong?

A friend recently gave me their old Macbook pro 15 because they broke the screen and the Apple store quoted them $500-600 to fix it. I looked online and bought a screen of ebay for $170 in hopes of fixing it myself. After getting the screen I hooked it up using the steps I found online. Sadly when I turned it on, the top half of the screen was working apparently normally, but then it faded to black. The bottom half stayed bright with color the whole time but the images were always blurred. When I close the screen with it on, then open it after turning the computer on, the top half lights up with my desktop images as if it is working fine but then fades to black. The bottom is still blurred the whole time. What all could be wrong? Display cable, Inverter cable, not registering the screen or something, the screen is bad? I don't now a ton about all this and I have learned most of what I know from online research. I am not sure if I should send the screen back or if there is another issue. I just want to fix this thing.

Unfortunately, you don't even know the lower half of the computer is working properly, because you didn't have it until after it had been abused. So forget the attached screen for the moment. Connect an external monitor to it, fire it up, and see whether you can get a usable image on the external screen. If you can, send the defective "new" screen back for a refund, or replace the LVDS video cable first to make sure that's not where the problem lies, and if it isn't, then resort to sending the screen back. If you can't get a good image on the external, give the junk machine back to your friend and walk away.

  • "Fade Through Black" transition in slideshows corrupts project!

I built a project from the ground up in iMovie. Shared this to iDVD. Constructed the whole dvd including a slideshow. When I clicked on "Fade Through Black" in the transitions menu for slideshows, iDVD abruptly quit with no error message! Completely quit.
I tried to open the project by double-clicking it and it would bring up a prompt saying "Loading themes", then show the iDVD window for a split second and quit again.
I tried making the iDVD project twice. With different themes each time, and still got the same result when I clicked on the "Fade Through Black" transistion. I had even saved the file right before clicking the transistion. That didn't help at all...

This frequently helps solve some problems. Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
You'll need to reset some Preferences.

  • "Fade to black" transition without handles ?

Is there any method to do a "fade to black" transition without handles in FCP 6 ?
Like in iMovie for example. Maybe with another Pro App?
    Many Thanks.

Have the Fade to Black end at the end of the clip, not in the middle. Notice when you drag transitions onto clips how you can make it end on the cut, be in the middle of the cut, or start at the cut.
