Imac G5 - Emac File Share ideas needed

Hi. We have an emac (runs OS x 10.4.3) which connects to internet via an airport wireless network already setup at home.
We recently purchased a new Imac G5 and now I want to let the Imac users see and share the iTunes, iPhoto etc files that are already on the emac.
I read some forums entries using a 'file sharing' search and found some ideas like: put files under the user everyone logs in as on the emac into 'shared' instead of the personal folder currently used (my username logged into by everyone on emac). Not sure this will be entirely enough?
Is it possible to have iPhoto and iTunes point to 2 libraies? the Local one (imac) and a shared location over a wireless airport (the emac)? This is ideally what we want) If I want to make the imac the 'system of records' or the keeper of all content then the scenario is the same but the emac becomes a slave of the imac for files essentially.
Thanks much for any insights

You can share your iTunes library over a wired or wireless network by turning on sharing in iTunes preferences. Look in iTunes support (http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/) for more details on how to do it. Not sure about iPhoto, however.

    Howdy.
    Just got a refurb iMac G5 20".
I can connect to the internet (wireless) and can file share with my PowerMac G4.
My PowerMac G4 can file share with the iMac as well as my PowerBook G4.
The PowerBook G4 can file share with the PowerMac G4.
The iMac and PowerBook cannot file share with each other. I've tried everything I've known and read to do in the Network and Sharing sections on both computers. Still nothing.
I will add that I have to manually type in the Server Address for the iMac to connect to the PowerMac as well for the PowerMac to connect to the iMac.

  • I have a new iMac - how do file share my music and photos from my old mac to my new mac?

I want to transfer my music and photos from one Mac to another - but I don't want to transfer anything else - what is the best way to do this?
    Thanks

the simplest way would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from /users//music on the source to /users//music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
do the same with your iPhoto library. see this support article for more information (except, you won't have to option-launch iPhoto)

I suggest you get 9.2.  You need to install the same or later version of the OS.  One some computer the shipped version has extra drivers.  The drivers will not be in the official release in this case 9.1.  They would be in 9.2.
Mac OS 9.1 (Mac OS ROM 7.5.1) and Mac OS X 10.0.4 (4P13)

The blinking question mark means that your mac firmware could not find a valid operating system

Try holding down the option key then power on.  This brings up the startup manager.  Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
    What is firmware?
The firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine.  It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS.   It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down command+option+o+f
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?

For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1 or later version of Mac OS Classic.

"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with lot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. • My Macbook (early 2008) no longer connects to my iMac. Any solutions beyond turning file share on?

    Greetings,
I'm able to see and connect to my MacBook (early 2008) from my iMac, but not the other way around. File share is on and match. Any solutions?

What operating systems are on each?  Are you connecting wirelessly, or via some sort of wires?

  • Is there a way to file share between an iMac and iPad?

I'm curious as to whether or not you can file share between an iPad and an iMac.  The main reason would be in case my wife or I were working on something on the iMac downstairs, we could "pull it up" on the iPad upstairs without having to sync it with the cable....or perhaps I'm just lazy...

    check out FileBrowser.
    another option may be Dropbox.

  • IMac file share with an Imerge s3000 server.

I cannot get ny mac to connect with an Imerge s3000 music server.  I can operate the system through the mac using the TV interface but I cannot share files.  The server is recognised by the mac on the network but each time I try to access the files it reports connection failed.  I need to access the files for backup and storing downloaded music.  I have followed all the instrctions but all goes well until the last step of opening the files.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your reply.
I have followed the same process. The credentials which I have given are same as my PC. But I am getting the same error. Can you please clarify the statement "Service
account that is using for file share subscription should have write access to shared folder."
    given in the above link?
I am the one who created the folder and subscribing the report, so probably I have the full write permissions to the shared folder. What is the service account in this context?
I think the problem is, I am deploying the report on the server and creating the shared folder in the local machine. I tried giving shared folder permissions to the user on the server. But my local machine is in local domain and I cant access the users on
the remote server. Do I need to create a shared folder on the server? I am new to SSRS. Please help me.
PS: I have assigned with all roles viz. Browser, Content Manager, Publisher, Report Builder etc. and My Role name (WEBSERVER\User)
is different from my local user name (domain\username) in domain.

  • Need to move documents from Record center to file share

I am trying to figure out how can I manage moving the documents from record center to file share. I want to move the older documents that are taking lot of space from record center in to some kind of file share. There are thousands of old documents that
I need to move to file share, so this needs to be bulk move.
    ganesh

Assuming you have permissions to the Record Center this is basically as easy as opening up the Library in Explorer view and doing a Drag and Drop Move.  But you should be aware that you'll lose all the metadata when you do it.  I suspect what
you really want is to move the documents to lower cost storage but retain the metadata and the connection to the records center.  To do that you would need to look at something like StoragePoint from Metalogix.  There's nothing built-in to SharePoint
that provides that kind of functionality.

  • I want to screen/file share from my Macbook Pro to IMac. I can't see it when I open the Shared folder.

From my macbook..I have a few times seen the IMac listed on the devices list. I don't know what I did to make it appear but I was able to
file share..etc. Now ...when I open Sharing folder from laptop..I see "IMac" as Computer name. Should this be changed? Screen Sharing:On..Allow access for all users is checked. I don't know how to launch my Imac screen again. Please advise. Thanks!

If screen share it turned on with both computers there are several ways to then screen share. First ensure Screen Sharing is selected on each computer in System Preferences - Sharing. Once this is done then open a Finder Window on the Left you will see Shared on the left side, then click the computer you want to share and you will see a screen like the following. From there click where it says Screen Share.

Try reindexing the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.
    Reindex messages.
If that doesn't work try deleting MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3.
    Quit the application.
You need to look in your user Library. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data/MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3.  Move the file to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the file from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return thefile to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.5. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Windows 2003 File Share 4 node Cluster: Does Cluster Resources need to be brought offline prior removing / unmapping any LUN's from SAN end?

    Hello All,
Recently, on a 4 node Windows 2003 File Share Cluster, we encountered a problem where when trying to remove few shares (that were no longer in use) directly from SAN end crashed the entire Cluster (i.e., other shares also lost their SAN connectivity). I
suppose the Cluster resources need to be brought offline prior removing it from SAN but I've been advised that these shares were not the root and instead a 'mount point' created within the share; and hence there is no need of bringing down any Cluster resources
    offline.
Please can someone comment on the above and provide me detailed steps as to how we go about reclaiming SAN space from specific shares on a W2003 Cluster?
p.s., let me know if you need any additional information.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Alex,
The problem started when SAN Support reclaimed few storage LUNs by unmapping them from our clustered file servers.  When they reclaimed the unused LUNs, other SAN drives which were there also disappeared causing the unavailability of file shares.
Internet access is not enabled on these servers. Servers in question are running 64-bit Windows Server 2003 Sp2. This is a four node file share cluster. When the unsued LUN's were pulled, the entire Cluster lost its SAN connectivity. Windows cluster service
was not starting on any of  the cluster nodes. To resolve the problem all the four cluster nodes were rebooted after which cluster service started on all the cluster nodes and resources came online.

  • Need help with File Share Subscription in SSRS 2008

    Hi,
I have a requirement where  I have to deliver a SSRS report in csv format to a windows shared location. I know how to create a File Share Subscription to get this done, but the problem arises with the frequency of the report
    requested. It is like following..at 23:00, 23:30, 23:35, 23:40, 23:45, 23:50, 23:55, 24:00, 00:10, 00:20, 00:30, 03:00, 06:00, 09:00, 12:00, 15:00, 18:00, 21:00
Now because the hourly pattern is not in a periodic format I am not able to get this scheduled in a single subscription. To achieve this one approach could creating multiple subscription. But I was wondering
if there is a way to pass on the schedule information programmatically to a subscription, so that I can achieve this by creating just one subscription.
    Any expert ideas...

    Hi Mtiwari,
Generally, we cannot create such an irregular execution time schedule. However, we can insert the execution time into a table and customize the steps on the job as a workaround. I have tested it on my local environment, the steps below are for your
    reference.
Create a table and add the execution time to it using the query below.
    Use TestDB
    Create table [CustomeSchedule]([ExecuteTime]    Date)
    Insert into [CustomeSchedule]
    values('23:00'),('23:30'),('23:35'),('23:40'),('23:45'),('23:50'),('23:55'),('24:00'),('00:10'),('00:30'),('03:00'),('06:00'),('09:00'),('12:00'),('15:00'),('18:00'),('21:00')
Create a subscription to execute erery Minute.
Connect to SSMS>expand SQL Server Agent>expand Jobs, double-click the Jop.
Select Steps on the left pane on the Job Properties window.
Click Edit button and then use the query for on the command.
    IF exists(SELECT [ExecuteTime]FROM [TestDB].[dbo].[CustomeSchedule3] WHERE
    LEFT([ExecuteTime],5)=LEFT(CONVERT (time, SYSDATETIME()),5))
    BEGIN
    exec [ReportServer].dbo.AddEvent @EventType='TimedSubscription', @EventData='9be28f07-3784-4070-802a-b7ca0aec4c7c'
    END
Change the @EventType and @EventData to the values in your Job.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Transfering- copying documents from IMac to MacBook Pro  - Migration Assistant or High Speed File share cable- which would be faster?

I started Migration Assistant to copy documents from my IMac to my new MacBook Pro - it started off saying "About 53 hours and 40 minutes remaining" to "About 64 hours and 47 minutes remaining" - I have a High Speed File Share Cable - should I have used that?

If you mean a FireWire cable, yes.
Your best bet is to start over.  See the green box in Problems after using Migration Assistant

  • Cannot file share between MacBook Pro and iMac, but can Screen Share fine.

    Hi all,
Very strange problem going at the minute!
I can Screen Share both ways (iMac - MBP and MBP - iMac) just fine but can't seem to File Share between either computer. They are both on the same network and both have the exact same settings under SysPrefs. I can see both devices in a Finder window and can click the 'Connect As...' button, but once I've put in my credentials, the message in the Finder window changes from 'Connecting...' to 'Connection Failed' in a matter of seconds.
Both have AFP switched on and neither has the Firewall enabled. I also cannot FTP between either computer via 'Connect to Server...', but I can utilise iTunes Home Sharing perfectly.
I've tried pretty much everything I can find on the WWW, but nothing's worked! Help!
    Thanks!

    Hi, thanks for your help!
I think I've solved the problem now (at long last!).
Somehow, my sharing permissions on my Home folder on either computer won't allow me access. I've tried repairing permissions multiple times, but to no avail.
I've solved the problem by sharing my Macintosh HD, rather than my individual Home folder and I can access everything as normal now.
