IMac G5 Hanging at spinning cog

I first posted a request for help to this problem on another thread re spinng cog problems. Unfortunately no-one answered!  So I am posting it again in the hope that SOMEONE can help me or advise me as to what to do!
I tried the various usggestions on this link
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
but, my iMac is four years old and so I cannot use the internet recovery!
I have tried the method from your link - still hangs on the spinning wheel.  I read somewhere that this is when it switches over to launchd (or something!)  I get exactly the same problem when I try to boot from the recovery disk or my backup disk (which is connected by firewire 800)
I connected my iMac G5 to my Macbook Pro via firewire.  It booted up OK as a target disk on my MBP.  So I ran disk uitility - Verify disk said the disk was OK.  I repaired permissions.  All were rrepaired except this message for one "Warning SUID file system has been modified and will not be repaired. I do not know what this means - and I have not (intentionally) modified anything! I also ran Disk Warrior and rebuilt directory
After all this - it still hangs at the same place - ie after the spinning cog has been running for about 30 secs
I read somewhere that MacKeeper has been causing lots of problems - could this be the cause?  Has anyone else had the same?  One thread said it was 'Spam'! Yet it sems to have a very high profile in advertising on so many sites!
I have tried all the reboot methods - still hangs at same place
HELP!
PS  I have bitten the bullet in the last week (after not being able to boot up this 4 year old iMac! So, I ordered a new iMac - does this come with an installation DVD for LIon ? and, could I use that to do a clean install on my iMac? I do have (two) backup copies of all my data on the iMac Ia s belts and braces!
I HOPE that one of you experts can advise me - I live in a small remote village in the French Alps and the nearest Apple dealer is thre hours away - so If there is anyhting I can do to resurect my Imac myself this would save me a lot of time, hassle - and money!
Thanks
Alan

Hi
Thanks - yes I have ordered extended Apple Care!   I forgot re the complete switch to downloads. drive!    I do not feel like paying $70 for a USB drive!
If I followed parts of the huge post of ds store correctly I thnk he described how it is possible to make a copy of LIon onto an external forewire drive - can he confirm this please?  I have a 40GB La cie that is lying doing nothing and I guess this would be OK?
Thank you both again. If I can make a copy of lIon on the LaCie drive - and IF I can reinstall LIon on my Four year old Intel iMac - I will let you know.  However, as an experiment I tried last night to boot from my Snow Lepoard disk. It hung at the same point ie 30 seconds in!
I do wish I knew what COULD be causing this - before I make a huge journey down to the Apple Store.  It seems starnge to me that I can connect it to my Macbook Pro by firewire (boot up as target) and access everything OK - even from other drives attached to the iMac!  So, what is it that has gone 'wrong' in the boot proces?
As I said above
" I repaired permissions.  All were rrepaired except this message for one "Warning SUID file system has been modified and will not be repaired. I do not know what this means - and I have not (intentionally) modified anything! I also ran Disk Warrior and rebuilt directory"
So, if anyone knows what this SUID system means - and IF this could be the problem - and IF I can repair this myself.
Thanks again
Alan

I spend more time looking at that spinning color wheel than I do using my iMac. Someone please help and tell me what I can do to clean things up so it's not lagging. I've run my disk utility, and it came out fine.

  • IMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute

iMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute
    I did this;
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
    the result was.
the 'permissions' are sometimes wrong, but they repair
the hard drive is either repaired or OK
the iMac will then restart and work fine and sometimes shut down and restart OK
after replacing the Hard Drive I actually thought I had fixed it and went to bed late but happy,
on waking in the morning, however I was not so happy it fired up and then died after dong -> apple logo -> spinning cog -> dead!!
I would be grateful for any help
    Thanks
    Pete

    Hi Miriam,
    Thanks yes,
here we go -- after running disc utilities it tells me directory OK and disk OK (or something like that) When I replaced the Hard Drive, I started 'fresh' erased/formatted the hard drive (new Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB) and it has just got 'tiger' on it (and upgraded to whatever it is now I think I remember 4.11, I can't tell at the moment as I have got the back off) I didn't transfer any data I just took the old drive (Seagate 160GB) out and stuck the new one in.
I've just changed the battery (I didn't really think it would work, but I was still hopeful and I'd bought the battery anyway) I did the LED thing, the internal power button thing, and the resetting the SMU thing (with crossed fingers and bated breath) but -- so I'm thinking is it the power supply? I read some of Jim's weighty, but worthy tome and resolved to remove the power supply and have a look. On opening it up, it does look as though, one (at least) of the capacitors has 'blown' (by the way, just in case I sound like I know what I'm talking about, I don't of course, I'm just quoting Jim's words;-) I'd love to send you a picture of the inside of the power supply showing what I believe to be a 'blown' capacitator (and I'm going to try to send one to Jim as I think it might be useful to him and others. can I attach a photo in any way or would you like to send me your email address <Edited by Moderator>
    Thanks
    Pete
PS it's still 'weird' to me, why it starts and runs well, when started from tiger (or whatever) and then starts or restarts from the Hard Drive unless I leave it a few hours and come back and try to start it
again? wow it's late nearly 4.00am here in london UK.

  • Please can somebody help, my imac will not start up, just chimes, apple sign then spinning cog. I have tried many key codes, no success, would really like to talk to someone.

please can somebody help, my imac will not start up, just chimes, apple sign then spinning cog. I have tried many key codes, no success, would really like to talk to someone.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Mac stuck on Apple screen with spinning cog

My daughter wanted to wipe our iMac and as we don't have a recovery disc she looked it up online and got some codes. I think she out something in wrong as it won't load past the gray apple screen with the spinning cog. We have tried the cmd actions. We don't have the original disc if the mac came with one but we have the snow leopard upgrade disc. We can't get to an apple store with it so any ideas?

To restart with the SL Upgrade DVD, insert the disc into the SuperDrive and when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key until you see the install dic and follow these directions:
Insert the Snow Leopard Install DVD into your Mac’s optical drive.
Once the Snow Leopard DVD mounts on the desktop, the Mac OS X Install DVD window should open. If it doesn’t, double-click the DVD icon on the desktop.
In the Mac OS X Install DVD window, double-click the ‘Install Mac OS X’ icon.
The Install Mac OS X window will open and present you with two options. You can continue with a standard upgrade installation, or use the utilities included on the install DVD. Click the ‘Utilities’ button.
The Snow Leopard installer will inform you that in order to use the supplied utilities, you will need to restart your Mac and boot from the DVD. Click the ‘Restart’ button.

  • Gray screen, spinning cog and midway to first back up of time machine

    Hi,
I got a new external hard drive and wanted to back up my system, which I tried using time machine. At some point during the back up, it appeared to me that time machine is stuck. I tried stopping the back up but my machine was not responding, even any other application. I power it down by down the power key. So, I had backed up some data and not all of it.
Now, when I restarted it is showing gray screen with apple logo and spinning cog and not moving beyond that (even after 4 hours). I am kind of worried if my hard disk has crashed and I have lost the remaining data.
Any help regarding trouble shooting this will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    v8r.

Basically, you need to boot from a drive other than the one that is failing. If your external already has an operating system on it, you can boot from that one. Since you're asking, though, I'm going to assume it does not.
First things first: cables. You need a firewire cable to connect your MacBook Pro to your Mac mini. I don't know what FireWire ports are available on your two machines. The two types of FireWire (400/800) are compatible, so if the two machines don't have the same ports, you can get an adapter. See this page for info about types of FireWire ports: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8259.html
    - Next, boot the machine with the failing drive into "Target Disk Mode." When you hear the chime, hold down the "T" key. You should not see the Apple logo. Instead, you should see the FireWire logo slowly moving around the screen. This tells the computer to act as if it were simply an external hard drive.
    - Connect the MacBook Pro to your Mac mini via FireWire. If you're lucky, the drive will show up on the desktop of your Mac mini. Copy the files to a safe location.
    - If it does not, you'll need to use software to recover the data. If you already have DiskWarrior, you can run DiskWarrior from your Mac mini on the MBP's drive. If you don't or if DW failed to produce a read-only "preview," I would recommend ProSoft's Data Rescue: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php DiskWarrior has more long-term use, but Data Rescue is better for this situation.
I know I still skimmed over a few things (e.g. using third-party software that I no longer have), but I hope that gets you started.

  • Finder crashes with OS 10.6.8. With or without any apps running finder will hang repeatedly causing the iMac to hang also. I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 recently and finder was OK for 1 week. How do I submit a crash log?

Folllowing an upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8  (Snow Leopard) Finder frequently hangs, causing any open apps and the iMac to hang. This will occur whether or not any 3rd party apps or Safari are open. About 50% of the time trying to empty the trash will cause a finder hang. There are no error messages to let me know what code such a hang may be. Repeated attempts to force quit the iMac always fail, so I have to hard crash using the power button. Multiple attempts are required to successfully restart via the login screen. I do not know whether any other apps, such as Safari or screen saver may be involved. I think a crash log would help, however I am not sure whether I should look in: useres/library/logs/DaiagnosticReports or : users/library/logs/CrashReporter, and whether I should attempt to open the latest in either in Console or Text edit and then post here. Also, is this the appropriate site to post a log in the hope that Apple may look at it? I have read through threads on Apple finder, and am stunned to find that after all these OS-X versions finder is still buggy and inferior to MS Explorer and Apple appears to be in denial. Maybe their efforts are in devices such as iPhones and iPads? Ths issue never occured in OS 10.5.8.

  • ARD Administrator hangs with "Spinning Wheel of Death" after Apple Updates

Help! I added the required eight Apple Updates today (11/23/09) and Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) Administrator stopped working. The installed updates are iTunes, 9.0.3, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.3.1, Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5 1.0, Security Update 2009-006 1.0, Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.0.1, Safari 4.0.4, Performance Update 1.0, and iMovie Update 8.0.5.
Since these updates, the ARD Administrator hangs up (spinning wheel) when trying to activate it. I receive the error message:
The Remote Desktop Administrator software failed to start due to an unexpected error. The Remote Desktop software may not be installed correctly, or the computer may require a restart. [Quit]
I have tried restarts, poweroffs, etc., but the ARD Administrator stills hangs. What can I do to reverse the last ARD update?

Without java, Safari is just as fast as Firefox. And if you do for some reason need java, you can use Firefox instead (as I had to, to log into the Apple Discussions" page.
Safari is faster than Firefox. There are very few sites that need use Java, so unless you know a site uses it, it should always be disabled. And for clarification, no part of the Apple web site uses Java, so there's no reason to have it activated.

  • IMac G5 hangs when downloading and installing updates to 10.5

My iMac G5 hangs when I try to download and install the recent large update to 10.5. Message says restart to complete the installation, but after restart the messages says it is configuring the software, but progress bar shows no progress after several attemps, the longest being over 12 hours. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob.

Repair permission & restart your computer. Try reinstalling the OS update from the combo installer if you have not already done so instead of using Software Update.
If successful, make sure you repair permissions again after all installations are completed.

  • Lumia 620 strucked in spinning cogs

620 strucked in spinning cogs after hard reset.tried tips mentioned in support page.please some one help

    As per nokia care!
Normally, it takes only 30 minutes at most to reset it. In the event that it would take longer, like what happened here, you can press and hold both on the volume down button and power key for about 10 seconds.
The phone should then reboot. If the phone would still be stuck to spinning gears, here is a hardware reset that you need to press.
Input these keys on the following sequence, press them one key at a time:
    Volume up
    Volume down
    Power key
    Volume down
Make sure that you try this while the phone is charged.
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.

  • Mail (OS 10.8.2) hangs and spins continually. have to force quit and restart.

I stopped using Outlook (Office for Mac) on my MacAir because it would hang and spin.  But Mail is doing it too.  I used to have four accounts attached (icloud, entourage, outlook, gmail) but took off gmail and outlook and now have only entourage and icloud.  Hasn't made any difference.
    Suggestions?

Please follow these instructions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Quit Mail.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar. Paste (command-V) into the box that opens, then press return. A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected  folder — not just its contents — to the Trash.
    Relaunch Mail and test.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

If you tried resetting the ipod and it still keeps having the same issue you described, try setting the ipod to disk mode.
Here is an article from the apple support website on setting the ipod to disk mode.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If you can get the ipod into disk mode, connect it to the computer and rrestore the ipod using itunes.
if the ipod will not go into disk mode, you can return the ipod or set the ipod up for service via the apple ipod service depot.

  • Mac Pro - Restart stuck spinning cog/wheel - Urgent!!

    Hi,
I've just gone to restart my Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66GHz comp and am now stuck with my background showing and a spinning cog/wheel which has been spinning for a fair while now.
    Please help!!
    Ash

    Hi,
Sorted it by holding down the power button to shut it down, then rebooted. I think some files weren't being emptied from the trash properly.
It was actually showing my background wallpaper not a blue/grey screen.
Last time I turned off holding down the power button my Lacie drive died (last week after a huge comp crash when the drives were still connected and couldn't be ejected due to the crash), which I'm trying to recover using Data Rescue tomorrow when my backup drive arrives.

  • Imac keeps hanging..

imac keeps hanging. tried instal disk; disk utility;      repair permissions >done     verify disk>volume error repair disk     repair disk>volume error will not complete.
I am running disk warrior now and get "speed reduced by disk malfunction".  Trying to figure out if this is a disk error or actually a hardware issue?

    replying to my own question:
Found this on the alsoft diskwarrior support page:
    Product
    DiskWarrior
    Question
When I run DiskWarrior, I get a message that says "speed reduced by disk malfunction". What does this mean?
    Answer
The message "speed reduced by disk malfunction" means there is a problem reading data from the disk due to a disk malfunction.
As long as the mouse cursor still moves during step 5, then the computer did not hang or freeze. DiskWarrior is still working on reading the directory of the disk.
Such slowdowns are usually the result of having bad blocks on the media. DiskWarrior is having trouble reading data from the locations on disk where the directory structures are stored.
You will also notice that an error count is kept at the end of the message. This feedback allows you to see that DiskWarrior is still working on reading data from the drive.
NOTE: This count does not increase at a regualr interval as disk errors are not distributed evenly across a drive.
Please let DiskWarrior run for as long as it takes. This can take quite a few hours but should eventually complete. On rare occasions, it might even be necessary to run this for a day or two.
Since the "speed reduced by disk malfunction" message indicates hardware-related issues, you will need to backup your files from the DiskWarrior Preview window (accessed from the DiskWarrior Report window) to another hard drive. Once you have a backup of your files, you will need to install a new hard drive to replace the damaged hard drive.
    bummer eh?!
