IMac is very hot top half of machine

I was wondering if anyone out there has a new 24" aluminum frame iMac and has noticed that the aluminum chassis gets very hot, and I do mean hot. I was wondering whether Apple intentionally went to the aluminum frame so that it would act as a heat sink. Unfortunately I'm a little concerned this heat will hurt the longevity of the electronics in this chassis.
Any comments on similar experiences would be appreciated.
Mike

on my first day of ownership) My new 24" 2.8GHz turned itself off during an Apple automatic Software Update…
I noted that (when on) there was no discernable fan noise! Oh bitter/sweet silence!
I downloaded "Temperature Monitor 4.2" and "smcFanControl 2.1.2" (both free).
With no real activity to cause heat build-up the Power Supply was at 82 C. and the CPU core 2 was at 74 C. (only 14 C. below Intel's CPU shutdown point)!
After setting smcFanControl at about halfway along the sliders tracks, sanity returned!
Temperatures are now sensible, with the Power Supply (under medium load) at 58 degrees C. and CPU core 2 at 52 C.

  • IMac getting very hot

iMac, getting very hot at top left corner of machine if on for more than 1 hour. Smelled like something was smoldering inside.

Normally, on heat-related issues, one step would be to install iStat Pro to view what the interior component temps are. However, if you believe that something is smoldering, I would take the system into an Apple store right away.

  • My iMac gets very hot

Just got my new iMac which I am very happy with, but after an hour or so of use it runs very hot. The upper left and right corners are extremely hot-almost too hot to touch for longer than 15 seconds or so. Is this normal ?

Very normal. This usually occurs when doing intensive tasks. The back of the iMac acts like a large heat sink to dissipate heat. Mine gets very hot at times as well.

  • HT4543 What to do if the fan never comes on...even when the IMAC is very hot?

I've had my IMAC for 2 months.  I was using the computer for an extended period today whikle playionmg a game.  Game play seemed after a while but I concluded it was due to a lot of info being "worked".  Anyway, the computer was very hot after a few hours of playing.   I became concerned 'cause the fans never came on.  Is this typical, or should i have heard them earlier?  Also, is there a manula way to engage the fans?  Thanks

Just to be sure do a smc reset.
But also install any one of the temperature monitors like iSTAT Pro, iSTAT Menus, Temperature Monitor, Hardware Monitor, etc.
And if you are really concerned that the fans you can override the built in settings by using smcFanControl.

  • After installing Mountain Lion, my iMac gets VERY hot!

I installed Mountain Lion yesterday onto my mid-2010 21.5" iMac.  Today, while running it normally, it got so very hot that I couldn't even touch the aluminum back.  The heat could be felt through the glass on the screen.
The fans could be heard, but didn't seem to be going overtly fast. CPU, memory, and disk usage all appeared normal.
I had Firefox, mail, Excel, and 1Password open at the time; certainly the apps weren't taxing the system.
Anyone else have this problem?  Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Although the specs for Mountain Lion say it will run on 2 GB of ram, you really need 4 GB to run well.  You can look at Launchpad > Utilities > Activity Monitor to see the memory usage with software open.  If there are a lot of page swaps, in and out, you need more memory.
Good sources are OWC and Crucial for guaranteed compatible memory.

Well, when I watch movies or play some games my computor gets really hot, almost as I can burn if I hold for a few seconds.
Since I don't know much about computor, specially since this is my first Mac. Is it the Fans not doing thier job, can I perhaps "make" them go faster or anything.
Yea so if it helps I downloaded some program that shows my temperatures, now its down to 44 but it was up to 50 before I started looking.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes there is smcFanControl 2.2.2 released, but you really need to use caution to first make sure that your air intakes are clean and free from any dust or lint buildup.
I have a 2006 iMac that has been using smcFanControl for years. I only run the fan speeds up just high enough to control the temp's and vacuum out the air intakes faithfully every 3 month. It has never ran hot or been in for service and I feel that that is the reason that the graphic's chip and display are still alive today.

  • IMac running very hot on Mountain Lion

My iMac cores are running between 67 and 83 degrees celsius. I am running Firefox and iMovie is analysing 4 minutes worth of video for stabilization. I know this is a common problem, but does anyone know of a coming solution?

The fans are working fine, I dread to think what the temp would be without them.  It means that my once "silent" iMac now has fans running most of the time, this means it isn't silent anymore and I do a lot of recording. It's pretty much why I bought the iMac.
I'm hoping Apple fix this issue.

  • Imac 27" 2012 Mountain Lion running very hot

Please help. My 27" IMac running very hot, especially top left corner. Is there a fix.
    Tony R

A couple of things.  First, do you know what the internal temperature are? if not, look into getting the widget istat from slayer.  It will show you something like this:
You can monitor the fan speeds and temps.
The iMac should speed up the fans in relation to the temperatures against a profile determined by Apple.  If for some reason, your fan speeds are low and the temp is sitll high, you may need to reset your SMC.  That is the shutdown, unplug, wait, plug it back in, restart maintenance proceedure.
If everything is working properly and you still don't like the temperatures, you can download SMCfancontrol.  This applications allows you to speed up your fans manually or set higher minimums.
Lastly, iMacs to get hot and are designed for it.  Apple wants to keep the fans speeds down so the system is quiet.  If you play lots of games, or doing a lot of GPU/CPU intensive work, it is normal for the chips to hit 70C at the case and the fans to be clearly audible.  If you were expecting to work the machine hard but the aluminum backside to be just warm, that won't happen.

  • Is it normal for the casing of an iMac to become very hot?

The casing on my imac becomes very hot to the touch at the top of the casing. Also the screen is becoming hot. Any ideas on the cause please?

I suggest downloading iStat Pro or iStat Menus (easily found using your favorite search engine). Then you'll be able to see exactly what your machine is doing at any given time and the associated temperatures and fan speeds.
I have an 2.8GHz i7 27" iMac. These are the temps I see under most conditions (per iStat Pro):
    HD: 90F
    CPU: 115F
    GPU Diode: 120F
    GPU Heatsink: 117F
    Mem Controller: 103F
    Optical Drive: 85F
    Power Supply2: 115F
The hottest part of the case is the top left corner most of the time.
When my machine is really cranking (when encoding video, for example) I've seen the CPU and power supply temps get up to around 130-140F.

Power pack failed on iMac OSX Lion and replaced by Apple at a cost. Computer top left and behind is very hot. Is this normal.

Take it back to the shop that did the repair and show them. Check other iMac's on the floor to see if they have this same heat problem.

Whilst using photoshop on my iMac it has become very hot is this normal

What iMac model do you have and what version of the Mac OS is it running? Doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu is a good start. Its first window looks like this:
Note the two lines I've highlighted with the red arrows; post what they display on your computer.
Different iMac models have different heat tolerences and heat management options, so we can better help you if we have those two bits of information

  • Hot Top? iMac froze? I just got it!

Is it normal for the top of my iMac to be hot to the touch? My iMac froze and repeated a short clip of music like a broken record when I left it running with music and the iTunes visualizer. I have the ATI graphics card and 3.06GHz processor. Did freeze up as a safety mechanism?
