IMac (late 2013) running too hot

Hello there
A colleague has one of the newer 27" iMacs with Haswell (i7 3,4GHz) and the CPU seems to be running way too hot.
When rendering the fans start to kick in (which I never heard before on the previous generation) and the CPU temp goes to 100Celsius.
When I'm rendering on the previous gen I'm getting temperatures around 80 Celsius and the fan never kicks in.
Any of you guys with the newer iMacs (late 2013) care to post some temperatures for the CPU?

Any of you guys have any experience with the newer models?
I would really like to learn what kind of numbers other late 2013 iMac users are getting.
The number definitely is high but I wonder if the next model that will come back will be the same.

Hello, I have an Macbook Pro 13inch Retina, Late 2013. it gets extremely hot after 30 minutes of usage, I don't know why, please help me out. I've tried running Apple Hardware Diagnostic but it couldn't find any problems.

  • How to fix the mouse and keyboard freezing when installing Windows 7 on 27' iMac late 2013?

Hi, I have a question for u guys who can solve this.
I recently bought the new 27' iMac late 2013, and I installed some softwares and used it for few days.
Before I bought this I used the 15' Macbook Pro Retina, I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and I used the Windows for gaming.
    So back to my question.
So I bought the new iMac and I was tying to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (with the same CD).
After dividing the partition, and other stuff, the iMac rebooted and I hold down the option (alt) key. I choose the Windows CD, and it said it is "getting ready to install Windows". I let it load, and the blue screen where you choose the language, time/location and keyboard input popped up. At the bottom right corner (at the same page), there is a button that said "Next (N)" which u need to click it to go to the next step. I was moving my mouse to click the button, but I realized that my mouse and keyboard was frozen. I tried both wireless and wired mouse and keyboard but they didn't work. There was nothing I could do. I hold the power button, (that was the only option) and tried my mouse and keyboard on Mac OS and it worked fine.
I thought something went wrong in the CD so I bought the Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The result was same. It frizzed again. (I just wast few hundred $)
Latter my friend lend me his Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit. I tried it, and it worked, it didn't freezed on Windows 8.
The problem is I played Battlefield 4, Titan fall, and Watch Dogs, and Battlefield 4 multiplayer doesn't work on Windows 8.1. Even though when it works on Windows 8, I prefer using Windows 7.
Dose anyone knows how to fix this freezing thing?
    My computer is:
27' iMac late 2013 (bought it just few days ago)
I did no upgrades when I bought it, except the graphic card.
I bought the iMac in Korean Apple Store, and my Windows CD is in Korean, can that be a problem?
Please leave a comment when u think u can solve my problem.

    See -> http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf.
In addition to the Windows disc (or USB flash drive with the Windows installer) you'll need a 8GB+ flash drive.
The referenced manual - on page 3, I think, gives you a run-down of what you'll need before you begin the installation. You may also want to post any further Boot Camp questions in the Boot Camp forum -> https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp.

  • Persisting crashes with brand new iMac late-2013 27-inch (14,2)

    Please help!!!
Last week I purchased the latest iMac late-2013 (14,2) 27 inch with everything top range directly from the Apple Online Store. My configuration in a nutshell is the iMac (of course) with wireless keyboard and magic mouse, attached to it through Thunderbolt a LaCie 5Big (10TB) external drive as well as a USB connected WD MyBook (2TB) for Time Machine and a USB3 connected WD MyPassport (2TB) for those files I want to keep mobile between my devices, all of this on OSX 10.9.1. Futher details on the hardware below:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac14,2
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          3.5 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          8 MB
      Memory:          32 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          IM142.0118.B00
      SMC Version (system):          2.15f2
My problem is that it keeps crashing... sometimes while doing some Final Cut X or Logic Pro X but other times while simply copying files between hard disks while Time Machine is running and everything else is closed... I can't figure out what the root cause or the particular event that triggers the crashes, thus they are quite unexpected and pretty abrupt - no warning signs at all.
I read in some of the threads that the 3rd party RAM may cause some problems but my 32Gb RAM came directly from Apple as configured while purchasing.
Here is the latest report my system gave me and I know some of you folks are pretty good figuring out what these messages mean. I will most likely get in touch with Apple support but before I do, I wanted to check with you geniuses before I spend hours on the phone with Apple support. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Oh. You didn't 'splain that. In this case here's a suggestion for a start:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IMac (late 2013) periodically shuts down after updating to Yosemite

I have a 27 inch iMac (late 2013, have had it 6 mos.) which I updated to Yosemite and after the update, it has just shutdown 5 or 6 times, (panic reports say 5 times). The system also seems sluggish at times... It has worked like a charm until the upgrade. I'm trying to decide whether to reinstall Yosemite -which went smoothly- or to try to go back to Mavericks. I have the System Diagnostic Reports as well as the system diagnostic test, I just don't know how to interpret the results. Does anyone have the expertise to explain what is happening? (I'm not a novice, but haven't played with unix for 18 years!)
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

I have a similar problem on my iMac 27-inch Mid 2011. No problems before upgrade yesterday to Yosemite. System settings show positive connection for wifi and ethernet. But web & mail access doesn't work for ethernet. Wifi access works only if I change service order with wifi listed before ethernet.
Apple phone support blamed it on my internet provider or router. However, our 2nd iMac (identical model) has web & mail access with ethernet.  The other iMac is still running Mavericks.  So the problem is clearly Yosemite.
I have put in a request for Apple support to call me tomorrow, & I'll see if they try the blame game again.

  • Brand new 27-inch iMac Late 2013 repeatedly crashing with Mavericks

    Hi folks,
I have a brand new 27-inch Mac from late 2013 running OS X 10.9.1 (Mavericks) with:
    3.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    32 GB RAM
    3 TB Fusion drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB
My system is hanging repeatedly, requiring a forced restart by holding down the power button - kernel panic I guess. Can't find a specific trigger, but I might be missing something.
I've tried reinstalling the OS, and a full erase and reinstall, but I'm still getting the problem. I've also run the hardware checker and verified the hard disc - all report the system is OK.
Annoyingly I can't startup in safe mode - think that's to do with having a 3TB Fusion drive.
Any suggestions? If I need to post a crash log can you let me know what bit is needed?
    Thanks for your help.
PS All the RAM was installed by Apple btw, so I don't think it's the mismatched voltage thing that others have had. Similarly, Google Drive is installed but not currently running.

  • Imac late 2013 freeze/crash

Hello, I bumped a crash a few hours ago:
I let my iMac Late 2013 i5, baseline model but with SSD, run overnight because I was running a MATLAB program. However, this moring, I noticed the system was unresponsive (I couldn't get the screen turned on, so I had to manually reset by holding several seconds the power button). This is my first crash, the iMac has been super stable before.
Below, I post some lines of the log extract from the console, just before the latest boot-up (after the crash).
I was wondering whether this could be due to MATLAB? Since I was running quite a heavy script that used a lot of RAM as the virtual memory indicated 14-16 gb RAM while this iMac only has physically 8gb RAM. Maybe, somewhere the RAM usage went unexpectedly upwards and the iMac couldn't cope anymore? I wouldn't know.
I was hoping someone could find the cause? Many thanks already.
    Stefan

Remark1: At the moment I was using osx 10.9. A few minutes ago I installed 10.9.1.
Remark2: Just for the info, my Wifi was turned off during the night.

Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.
You state it panics over and over again. Are these at regular times or randomly? What are you doing when a panic occurs? What do you see in the Console log at the time of the panic?
Panics are generally hardware related. They can be very basic such as defective memory. You can try removing both memory modules, then testing each in both slots individually to see if panics occur.

  • IMac late 2013 keeps randomly crashing

My new iMac (late 2013 shipped with OS 10.9.0 and updated to 10.9.2) keeps randomly suffering kernal panics and has done from the beginning. The reports keep alternating between Type 14 and 13, but today one was reported that I've never seen before (see below). The diagnostic tools tell me everything is working properly (hardware and software). I've seen discussions where they claim the issue is caused by bad RAM while others say wait for a OS update - any ideas about which mine might be?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Thanks Linc.
The re-install of OS X, making sure everything was up-to-date and zapping the NVRAM lasted all of 5 seconds before I got another kernel panic (see below, different one this time).
I'm currently running in Safe Mode to see if it happens again.
Will your Terminal command still work as intended in Safe Mode?

  • Pages 4.3 crashes on iMac Late 2013 Mavericks

Pages 4.3 (latest update for iWork '09 afaik) constantly crashes (closes and shows "unexpectly quit" crash report) on a new iMac 27" (Late 2013) running 10.9 (.1) Mavericks
The crashes seem to be comepletely intermittent. Sometimes when writing, pasting text, dragging images.
    What I've tried:
reinstall iWork (deleted preferences and iWork folder first)
format drive and reinstall system, transfer user via migration assistant form backup
create new user (crashes in new user as well)
clone to another iMac (same model, except it has a Fusion Drive)
    Here are some crash reports:
http://pastebin.com/xTszDwNG (latest one, this one was when a image was dragged into pages)
    http://pastebin.com/k9NsMFpt
    http://pastebin.com/kYxh71np
    http://pastebin.com/TUMQctDL

Yvan's box.com account often is out of bandwith. I have put a copy on my Box.com account in the iWork folder. Download uninstall iWork '09.zip, decompress it, open it in AppleScript Editor and click the Run button.

  • IMac late 2013 headphone volume extremely low

Just got an iMac late 2013, works perfectly and the internal speakers work fine. But once I plug in a headphone, the volume coming out is so low that with volume adjusted to max it's less than audible in an office environment. Tried VLC boost, even with that it's just about audible.
    Running latest Maverick.
    Thanks.

    Plug in the headphone.
    1. System Preferences > Sound > Output  > Balance
Make sure that the volume slider is set at the middle.
    2. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.
Make sure that CH1 and CH2 volume sliders are at the middle and matched.

  • IMac (Late 2013) change 2sets of Corsair memory CMSA16GX3M2A1600C11 but always hang suddenly

My iMac (Late 2013) change 2 sets of Corsair 2x16GB memory (CMSA16GX3M2A1600C11) but always hang suddenly
I have checked it by memtest and show all ok, are any one know what the problem is? Many thanks!

Well, I only buy my RAM from one of the two most recommended RAM vendors here: OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial; not sure if the dual channel would have something to do with your problem, but I'd test with the old RAM - if it works, then it appears to be the RAM or try the Apple hardware test (run that in extended mode at least twice).
FWIW, I've not seen a positive post about Corsair; Macs have always been extremely finicky about their RAM.

Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

  • Can I install a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB into the new iMac late 2013?

    Hi There,
    1)   Can a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD be installed in the new iMac late 2013 model?  (My plan is to remove the existing 1TB HDD and replace with the Samsung SSD)
1.1)  I have heard somewhere, even though it will fit, Apple's logic board firmware will pick up the non-apple product and render the iMac useless until original hard drive is reinstalled.
1.2)  If it will work, will I loose my warranty on iMac?  Note, the SSD will be installed by an Apple authorized workshop.
    2)     Can 2x 2.5 sata drives be installed in the iMac?
2.1)  I know the iMac only has 1x SATA and 1x PCIe slot, but can one not install a PCIe - SATA converter and also a 2x 2.5 drive bay in the place of the existing         3.5" drive?
    Thanks for your assistance.
    Regards,
    asdutoit

I checked on the Samsung website and the 840 Pro is OSX compatible and should work in your MBP.

  • What cable do i need for a dual monitor iMac late 2013

    Hi there
I am wondering if I can set up a dual monitor for my imac late 2013. I'm quite new to macs so bear with me. I'm a university student studying maya (digital vfx animation) and I need desperately to hve a dual set up. My mac is the 21.5inches. What cable would I need and would monitor would you recommend that would be a good match to my mac. I can afford around £150 but cheaper the better. I am a student who is also a full time disabled single mum lol so funds are scarce.
Thank you in advance for any help that you can give me.
    kind regards
    Kitt

You will need the mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter cable, here.

  • Is it normal that my macbook pro cpu runs too hot?

I downloaded the smcfan control since my laptop was running too hot and I only bought it 3 days ago.
It says that my temperature goes up to 90c sometimes and it is too hot to even touch!!
I am a bit worried, I adjusted the fan settigs to higher rpm and it seems to help a lot, but why is it so the fans are not automatically adjusting when the temperature is so high? Is there something wrong with my laptop - I could still get it replaced with a new one since I just bought it..
    My specs are:
    MacBook pro 15" 2011
    i7 proccessor
    4GB or ram
    Thanks in advance!

194º F / 90c is the typical temperature if your doing a lot of heavy CPU load.
Check your Activity Monitor in your Utilities for any runaway processes.
If you first boot your machine and it gets these sort of tempertures with nothing else running, you very well indeed have a problem.
The average temperture using smcFanControl with default Apple fan speeds should be about 120º F cold boot, at idle/light load (just a simple browser window no video) CPU in a 78º F enviroment.
Iv'e bumped my minimum fan speed to 4000 RPM, and thus my smc reported temperture is about 100ºF for those same conditions.
If you way above these typical conditions (others report about the same) then yes I would uninstall smcFanControl and then take the machine in for a evaluation, you could have a dead fan or sensor, etc.
