Imac + Mac pro compatibility?

I'm gonna buy a Mac pro for sure once i get the money, but i've also have the Imac in interest and I've wondered if you can use the Imac as a screen for the Mac pro and the harddrive in the Imac at the same time.
If so, How?
if not, should apple make it a feature?

I am assuming you want to use your iMac screen like a cinema display for the Mac Pro, and the iMac hard drive as an 'additional' drive for the Pro. If that is the case, the answer is no you can't as I have described. Can you use screen sharing software and mount the drive over a network from the Pro? Sure. Should you be able to? I personally don't see it as something I would use, I have multiple macs, but that is because our family use them at the same time. Your setup would not allow for the use of the iMac when the Pro was in use. Kind of defeats the purpose of having 2 machines, no?

  • Migrating FCE 2 on G4 powerbook to FCE 4 on Intel iMac/Mac Pro: Questions

I am interested in migrating from FCE 2 on G4 powerbook (1.6ghz) to FCE 4 on Intel iMac/Mac Pro (have to decide which). I have two main questions:
Will my FCE2 projects, sequences, scratch files etc. (currently on external hard drive) open ok on the Intel based FCE4 system?
How much of a performance boost can I reasonably expect after this migration (for example renderings)?
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you both for replying. Just in case anyone else is wondering about the second part of my question (speed of FCE on 1.6GHz Powerbook G4 vs an Intel iMac), I tested this out this weekend at the local Apple store. I took a 12 second clip on different computers and timed how long it took to render a contrast/brightness change. Here are the results:
    7 sec. iMac
    6 sec. Mac Pro
    9 sec. Macbook Pro
30 sec. My old G4 Powerbook
So a 4-5 x bump! Impressive! Although its interesting that the mac pro isn't radically better than the imac.

  • Upgrade power mac g5 or buy imac/mac pro

I have a single cpu 1.8ghz g5. If i upgrade to a 128meg video card will it play world of warcraft at a minumum of between 30-40frames per second? or should i save up for an intel pci-e imac or a mac pro? Mind you im coming to macs from a dual core gaming rig that runs wow between 90-120fps depending on server load. If the g5 can handle it, then ill grab a mac mini, if not then save up money to get either an imac or a mac pro Any help would be greatly appreciated

Why not look at hardware sites and see just what can be done today on a PC using P55 or X58 and Core i5/i7 and graphics cards coming out?
Always going to be limited in choice and pay an $100 'tax' for Mac compatible.
The Mac Pro makes running OS X and Windows easy though, and there is $1999 in Apple Store Specials for a 2008 single proc quad-core 2.8, nice and you can do quite well. Which is about what it cost to do a custom build for my 920.

  • Is there a big performance boost from 2008 MacBook Pro to i7 iMac/Mac Pro?

I'm trying to determine if a new desktop is worth the investment. I have a 2008 MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz and 4GB of RAM. I'm getting a little frustrated with it when using it with Aperture and Final Cut Express. It's just too sluggish for me.
But before I drop about $2500 on a new Mac Pro or iMac, I want to be sure I'm going to see a huge performance boost over my laptop. I'd hate to spend all the money only to find my photos and videos process only 10 or 15% faster than before. I'd like to see a new machine perform twice as fast but maybe that's unrealistic. I'm just not sure.
Can someone please tell me what I should expect? Thanks.

Maybe these two http://www.barefeats.com/mbpp20.html http://www.barefeats.com/mbpp18.html can give an impression on what to expect (i7 iMac - MBP 3.06 C2D)

  • Refurbished iMacs/Mac Pro's

I am hoping to upgrade to a much faster computer in the next couple months. But I am in a debate with myself. Are refurbished Mac Pro's with upgrades as good as a brand new top of the line 27-inch iMac with upgrades? I work in film production with Final Cut Pro and right now I have a 20-inch first generation intel with 4GB of Ram and Im working with a lot of Canon 5D footage.
I'd rather not get a Mac Pro (because of how much room they take) if a brand new 27-inch iMac will be just as good.

You all have convinced me. I was waiting for the new iMacs to be released but then I remembered that many such have infant mortality of one kind or another and I have always had better luck with systems after waiting a few months. With the current crop of 27" i7s likely approaching the end of their life cycle I assume that most of the bugs have been worked out.
I also looked at my needs. My current iMac has used about 250GB of the 1TB internal drive--I have about 8TB external on FW800. Other than a few Handbrake encodes, editing photos with Aperture and Lightroom/Photoshop CS5, and running Parallels 6 most of my use is not DRAM intensive. So a the current i7 should be more than adequate and I believe Handbrake on an i7 is as fast or faster then a Turbo.265HD. I expect this unit to meet my needs for years to come. Besides, I can pass my current 24" iMac on to my wife and get my MacBook Pro back
So I cruised out to the refurb page earlier today and found nothing I wanted. The only 27" was an i3. I've been checking regularly since and a 27" 2.93GHz i7 just showed up. I One-clicked it immediately and I also ordered Apple Care and 16GB of Samsung DRAM for it.

  • Mac Pro Compatibility With Older SATA Drives And DVI Connectors

I soon plan to replace my 5 year old G5 with a new Mac Pro and need two questions answered so that I will know what options i have for the transfer of older data and apps. The Apple web site for the Mac Pro includes the following paragraph which gives me reason for concern:
Your Mac Pro includes four drive bays, allowing you to configure it with
up to 8 terabytes of storage using 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s drives, up
to 2 terabytes of storage using high-performance solid-state drives, or
any combination of each type of drive. Configure each drive bay
    separately.
Does the phrase "using 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s drives" mean that the Mac Pro will ONLY work with 3Gb/s drives or that it performs best with 3Gb/s drives?
I currently have two internal SATA 250/300 GB Maxtors (Maxtor 7Y250M0 and Maxtor 6B300S0... both are 7200 RPM but I don't know the data transfer speed). Ideally I would get a Mac Pro with a single 1 TB drive, move one or both of these older SATA drives to the new computer, one temporarily and the other permanently in order to transfer data and Apps to the new machine. If this is not possible then the new machine will need to wait until after I get a new larger FW external drive to use as a data transfer medium (I had planned to do that anyhow). I need to do some advance planning for this so I need to know what to expect in advance. I noticed this possible wording ambiguity on Apple's description of the Mac Pro long ago, but now I need to find out the answer for sure. Apple, you need to be more specific with your words.
Can anybody answer this question for me?
My second question regards display connectors. Does the standard (no bucks added) display card include a standard DVI connector or only the newer Mini-DVI connectors. I think I see a standard DVI connector in the low res picture of the back of the Mac Pro but am unsure. My 5 year old Apple display bit the dust a year ago and I had to replace it with an HP 2009m display (mumble grumble) which does use a standard DVI connector. A new Apple display is too rich for my blood so I plan to continue using the HP display for now and need to find out if I will need a display adapter to go with it.
Many thanks to anyone who can answer these questions authoritatively.
For anyone who asks why I still run 10.3.9 on my G5, I can only answer response speed. New OS versions always act like a lead anchor on a machine with their added overhead and Tiger really does feel like a ball and chain tied to me... it just does not reaspond as fast as I do. I look forward to the speed of a new machine.

Does the phrase "using 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s drives" mean that the Mac Pro will ONLY work with 3Gb/s drives or that it performs best with 3Gb/s drives?
Any commercial sATA drive will do just fine. 7200 RPM is not a requirement.
WD "Green" drives have caused user complaints about "long delay until ready" when installed inside a Mac Pro, but are fine for backups.
You are making the leap from PowerPC to Intel Mac. Eventually, you should re-initialize your old drives to GUID partition table for best responsiveness.
Migrating your System will not be possible. Use the pre-installed System or Install a new System on a GUID-partitioned drive with the release DVD in the box.
Migrating your Applications is a Bad Idea. You should plan on re-installing all your third-party Applications from their release discs.

  • LED monitor and a 2007 mac pro compatibility

My mac monitor is busted, I need to get a new one, though this time it won't be an apple one.  I have a 2007 mac pro, what I need to know is a LED monitor compatible with my mac pro.
    For instance, this one,

I need a monitor with lots of USB ports though am not sure about compatibilit, when it comes to LED.
    Thanks

That one will work.  You will need a DVI cable.

Will the new monitor work with older Mac Pro's?

Why does the Apple store list the ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro as only the Early 2008 & Early 2009 models?
Only Apple knows, but the comments section, and many posts here, show it works in any Mac Pro/
I'd like to use the new 27" LED with my original 2006 Mac Pro 1,1. I currently have the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT.
You can use it with the dual-link DVI port (only one port is dual-link) on the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT with a converter
    <http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-Dual-Link-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-USB-Po wered.html>
The ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit says it's only compatible with the Mid 2010 version.
There are reports that it also will work in any Mac Pro.

  • Mac Pro compatibility with Windows 7 and Bootcamp

    This apple post : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3920
says they will not support Win7 on older Mac Pro's (e.g. 2.66ghz dual). Does anyone know why?
When I try to instal Win7 on Bootcamp 3 I get a BSOD and it will not run.
    Suggestions?

If you look closely you see that EFI64 (UEFI 2.x) is the demarcation line of 2008 between support or not is EFI firmware.
2006-7 and you get the EFI menu prompt with 64-bit Vista and 7. Mac Pro and others pre-2008. Apple's idea of supported or not may not be ours. If you want to troubleshoot yourself.
BC 3.0 - built during the summer, before Windows Oct 22nd, buggy, and rushed. Often due to the HFS read feature, just rename "AppleHFS.sys" to something else is often enough. Not sure why your system is having trouble without knowing more.

  • Mac Pro compatibility with HP Designjet Plotter

    Hi All.
My architectural firm are about to order some new Mac Pro's and a new HP Designjet 500 A1 plotter. I'm currently using a G5 on 10.4.7 and have just noticed that the HP 500 is not listed in the Printer Setup Utility.
Does anyone know if support for this plotter is available anywhere?
    Thanks.

    AJ -
We had the same problem with our old Designjet 430. Both OS9 and OSX were completely unsupported by HP. We had to fork out for 3rd party software for OS9 and the Gimp driver for OSX resulted in very poor quality plots.
I've had a look and there is a HP driver for the 500 for OSX, but for 10.4 it says:
HP Printers - Mac OS: Print only HP Drivers (non-Postscript) built into Mac OS X v10.4 (Tiger)
Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger and HP Driversback to top of page
The latest HP printer driver for this device is built into Tiger for print only functionality and does not require a download or reinstallation of any HP software to print.
This document applies to raster (non-Postscript) HP Designjet, Deskjet, Business Inkjet, and LaserJet printers.
In order to best take advantage of the latest HP driver and new Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger features, it is recommended that you delete original HP printer queues from Printer Setup Utility and create a new HP printer queue.
Tiger - HP printer setup instructions:
1.Upgrade install from Mac OS X v10.1, 10.2, 10.3 - select 'Reset Printing System" option (from the Printer Setup Utility pull down menu) to delete all previous printer queues. The HP printer queue can also be deleted manually from Printer Setup Utility.
2.From Printer Setup Utility, click on Add, select connection type (e.g. All, Bonjour, USB, Appletalk) and create new HP printer queue. The Printer Setup Utility is found in the Applications/Utilities folder.
3.Clean install - If there is a clean install of Tiger, follow step 2 to add a new HP printer queue.
That has me scratching my head because as I said, the 500 isn't listed in Printer Setup.
    Any ideas?

  • Mac Pro compatibility with my Sony Vaio lap top

I think I am going to take the leap into mac. I really like the mac pro, but I am not ready to trade in my lap top. Am I going to have any problems switching back and forth from the Mac Pro to my Sony Vaio lap top?

You can run Windows on your Mac Pro. And you can be sure that it is proven machine today.
As for speculation about future products, what when and if, my guess is 2009 will be busy for Intel's rollout of Nehalem in mid-year, and 10.6 eventually, and while they will definitely improve the quality and performance, I'd worry about those 12/31/2009, not 2008.

  • Mac Pro compatibility with Xserve Raid

Are the two compatible? In other words, can I connect an Xserve Raid to my Mac Pro (asuming that I have a Fiber Chanel card)?
If above answer is yes, asume that the Mac Pro is connected to a WLAN at home via Ethernet or airport. This WLAN also hosts one more computer (PC). Will this PC have access to the Xserve raid data?
Finally (and asuming that cost is not a big issue-I know how much the Raid solution costs, even at minimum config), Do you think that the Xserve Raid solution (with the minimum configuration) is better/more reliable/faster/ than the Mac Pro internal solution? Take into consideration that I am a photographer (shooting digital and raw format ONLY) and I consume about 50-60Gb of disk space per month
    Mac Pro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You might want to look at what some other photographers use, Port Multiplier controller and drive enclosures. Up to 5 drives per channel for a total of 20 drives.
XRAID would offer FC and more levels of RAID support, and concurrent access, especially with Xsan.

  • Mac Pro compatibility with linux 64x / visa 64x

I purchased a Mac Pro for the power because I am an Architecture graduate student and I spend a lot of time modeling and rendering large and complex structures. Sadly, Maya, which I use a lot is only scripted for 32x on the Mac OSX. I have the options of installing 64x edition of Maya in either Linux or Windows. My question is which 64x operating system would be most compatible with my mac pro? I have five hard drives so its not a big deal to me where the OS goes as long as it will allow me to make the most use out of the system. My hope is that AutoDesk will get on the ball and release a 64x OSX edition of Maya but in the mean time I'm going to have to use an alternate OS... I'm also hoping the next addition of the mac OSX will integrate GPGPUs so that I can drop in another video card to bump up its processing power but that might be too much wishful thinking.

Well, a more powerful Mac Pro should come out sometime in mid-2009.
Snow 10.6 will probably require 64-bit drivers and updates to any applications, 3rd party controllers, plug-ins and the works.

  • Future Mac Pro compatibility

Hello, I am ordering the new 24" LCD Display and am assuming that the next line of Mac Pro's will be compatible with this. Would I be assuming correctly, or should I cancel my order?

While there are rumors that Apple is moving toward using the Mini Display connector across the product line. There is nothing from Apple saying that. Without an official statement about future products, I would recommend holding off purchasing this display for anything other than the currently shipping portable. So, short answer...cancel your order.

  • What to do: new iMacs/Mac Pros lack FW400

I've been running Logic Studio on my G5 PowerMac - a little slow but for the most part fairly manageable. I really like the new iMacs and would like to get one 'cos it will represent a much-needed speed-increase and power-boost for my studio. However, I use a MOTU 828 audio interface which uses FW400, which neither the new iMacs or the new MacPros have.
So far, I've identified my options as: get new iMac and get NEW USB audio interface, or (ii) get the more expensive new MacPro and buy a PCI Express card to install some FW400 ports. Neither which is very cost-efficient.
I've read about these adapters and cables which supposedly can plug into FW800 ports, but I'm not sure how well they will work.
    So my questions are:
    - are there FW800 audio interfaces??
    - how do USB audio interfaces compare with FW400 ones?
    - any other options that anyone can suggest? Or perhaps I should just stick with my G5 PowerMac??
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone in advance!

I ' don't know for sure... (maybe nobody knows)
    But refering to Motu article:
+"As our FireWire interfaces are FW 400 devices, there will be no performance increase by connecting them to a FW 800 bus, but there will also be no detriment to MOTU FW performance either. MOTU FireWire interfaces can be bus-powered via a FireWire 800 port just the same as via a regular 6-pin FireWire 400 port. Using a FW 800-to-400 adapter simply provides you with more connectivity options. "+
There are chip set that slow down the FW800 to 400 speed performances...
I have notice about RME and DigiDesign Firewire.. But I'm not so sure about that
But Motu devices comes with the best Firewire chipset...
you can connect it without loosing FW800 speed!!!
But be carefull there are some external hard drive that should be not so compatible if connected in the same FW buss. (but this point is the same also for Mac with FW400 that are connected in the same FW800 Buss ... that it is in My G5)
