IMac no longer automatically connects to Airport

Hi all.
Used to be (up to a week ago +/-) that as soon as I turned the iMac ON, it would automatically connect to the Airport (WIFI mode).
It no longer does that and if I want to connect to my network via Wifi, I have to open System Preferences/Network and manually enter the network's name and password.  The iMac then connects (and stays connected) without problems.
The iPods and the iPad keep connecting automatically to the network without problems.
The Airport Extreme router firmware's was updated today to 7.6, but that had no impact on this problem.
In the past week or so, the power has been (abruptly) cut on the line that powers the router.  Could this have had an impact???
Thanks for any ideas.

Try the following...
1. Delete Preferred Network(s)
- System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
- In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
- Delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list
2. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
- Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
- Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
- Restart, or log out then back in.
3. Add Preferred Network(s)
- System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
- In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
- Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
- Restart or log out then back in.

  • Won't automatically connect to Airport network after 10.4.8 update

After updating my Mac Mini CoreDuo from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8, it will no longer automatically connect to our Airport Express based Wi-Fi network. Even though the Network settings in System Preferences have not changed, and they do list it as the preferred network, it still will not automatically connect after log in.
Does anyone have this issue, and know of a solution?
(aside from the workaround of manually connecting after log in, and after waking the computer from sleep).
Background: My setup is to join preferred networks by default, the network name continues to be the one listed, the network still continues to show up in the Airport network list in the upper right corner of the screen. In essence, the Mac sees it is there but just won't connect to it. We have two other Macs in the household, both are PowerPC based, and both were updated to 10.4.8, and they have no issues. They continue to automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network we have. This seems to be with our Intel Mac only.
Mac Mini CoreDuo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Mac OS X 10.4.8

This all happens most likely due to a corrupted key chain (entry).
For instance, if you choose to keep your local Airport password stored in your personal key chain it needs to be accessible by the private Apple Airport Framework used by the network preferences. If this by any means, is not possible - the automatic login into you Airport WiFi network cannot take place.
All you have to do to get this fixed is:
    1) Launch your Keychain Access Application located at: /Applications/Utilities
    2) Open the Keychain First Aid (under the Main Menu: Keychain Access)
    3) Set the Radio Button to Repair and enter your Keychain Password (most likely your personal password)
    4) Start.....
Now after your personal keychain (name=username) is repaired it might be listed double in your Keychain List Window (it depends how you've setup the keychain). If so, NEVER DELETE ONE OF THIS ENTRIES because that's obviously a cosmetic bug in the Keychain Access Application but not harmful. Just look in your local Preferences Folder, locate the file "com.apple.keychainaccess.plist" and thrash it. Re-launch the Keychain Access Application and there is only one again.
    Restart your Mac and........
After all I think anything should be back up to how it supposed to be. :-))

  • IMac won't automatically connect to Wi-Fi.

iMac won't automatically connect to Wi-Fi.  I can connect manually using "Network Diagnostics".  After I select my router the connection is made.  How can I make it automatic again?  I only have a medium/low expertise.  Software is Mac OS X v10.7.5.
The problem all started when I let Nintendo do a computer share in order to connect to a Wii U.  The tech was into so many things I couldn't keep track of them.  I have tried everything I know to fix it but to no avail.  I even let Nintendo try twice to correct this...no luck.

Hello, how do you fetit to connect?
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

Instead of joining it from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • PowerBooks will not automatically connect to Airport Express

Recently purchased iPhone and changed my Airport Express password to something easier to spell on iPhone keyboard. Since then, two PowerBooks I own (early G4 and later G4) will not automatically connect to Airport Express Network. I have to manually go to Airport icon in menu bar and join network. Any advice on this small annoyance is greatly appreciated.

Went to the Sys Pref and edited the profile of the AE. Now loads fine.

  • Macbook no longer automatically connects to wireless

Hi There - I have a macbook (That I love). Just in the past few weeks since the last OS update I've had problems with my airport. Usually when you open your computer from sleep it automatically connects back to your wireless network. Mine no longer does. i have checked all my wireless settings and my WEP password is still there. If I click on airport and select my network I connect, but it doesn't do it automatically. I have seen a number of other people with the same problem....is anyone else having this issue? How do you solve it?

I am having the same issue here. I have followed the suggested fixes, to no avail. Here's a run down of my symptoms, attempted fixes, and the "fix."
when coming out of sleep, my wireless connection no longer works. i can connect to a neighbors, but when i attempt to switch back to mine, nada. airport status shows it is connected with full reception. no internet. no network connect. i got nada.
rebooted the router. nada. rebooted the cable modem. nada. rebooted modem, then the router. nada. (d-link DI-624. also had the Linksys WRTXXX)
    attempted this fix: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482 nada
in order to establish a connection, i go through the following:
    - when the macbook comes out of sleep, i open safari and get the network diagnostic screen prompt.
    - i turn off airport, shut down safari, then turn airport back on.
    - reopen safari and get the network diagnostic prompt.
    - go get a cup of coffee, nature break, etc.
    - come back and my internet start up page is USUALLY waiting on me.
the problem with this, is that the connection is usually DROPPED five to ten minutes into the connection and everything above is REPEATED.
my solution? as much as i hate to say it, use the PC. it doesn't have this problem. Apple needs to address this issue with a firmware upgrade NOW.

  • Automatically connect to airport/WiFi at startup

I have updated the firmware on mt Airport extreme and my new MacBook Pro now no longer connect to the airport automatically on startup, as it used to - i have to manulayy select the network each time. Is ther a way of getting it to do this automatically on startp up again, it's frustrating having to do it manually.

There sure is! I had the same problem as you and I solved it by doing the following:
Open System Preferences and select Network. Near the top of the box there's a drop down list named "Show." Use that to select Airport. Then select the tab named "Airport."
You should see another drop down menu that says "By default, join." Try automatic first especially if you don't have a closed (hidden) network. If Automatic doesn't work or if you have a closed network, select "Preferred Networks."
If your network name isn't listed in the box click on the "+" underneath the box to add it. You'll be asked for the network name, encryption type and password if needed. Reboot and you should automatically connect.
If the above doesn't work click on the "Options" button at the bottom of the Airport box in Networks. One particularly helpful option is "Automatically add new networks to the preferred network list"
    I hope this helps.

  • Can't automatically connect to Airport and Internet after restart

I run a brand new iMac Intel and an AirPort Express. Each time I reboot my iMac I loose my Internet connection. The machine says it's got full coverage signal and that it is connected to my preferred network. Still, I can't browse the Internet (tried even with IP-only) or read e-mails or anything else.
The only way to get back on is to turn off Airpot on my computer, and immediately after turn it on again. Then everything works as it should.
But I want it to connect automatically as it is supposed to.
I found the following page at Apple support, but it didn't solve my problem:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
Anyone else experiencing the same problem, or having any clue why this is happening and/or how to solve this problem?
iMac 24" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, Blue Rider, I am experiencing that problem. I went to the Apple support page that you referenced, but doing what they suggested didn't solve my problem either. This lack of automatic connection affects my mail program too. I have to click on a connection button to activate the mail. All this for me started a few days ago after a recent security update. Tomorrow, I'll be calling AppleCare. I hope they can figure it out.

  • Email no longer automatically connects

Probably when I upgraded to 3.0, my original iPhone (and my wife's) stopped automatically connecting to email, both POP and IMAP. I have to launch the email application on my phone before it will connect and show new messages in the queue. I'm assuming that this is the price of running 3.1 on my tired old phone. Anybody else having this problem? Any suggestions?

In the signature preferences make sure that, for each account, you have selected a signature at the "choose signature" popup.

  • Macbook pro no longer automatically connects to network upon waking up

Since yesterday - for no apparent reason, i have to manually choose my network when i open my macbook. This is not a new computer or a new wireless setup. All has been working fine (with occasional hiccups with new hardware here and there, but mostly fine) for YEARS. And of course, as of 2 days ago, no problem. Everything is set to connect automatically and my home network is top of my list of 'preferred' networks. It does seem to be taking a few seconds longer to show up than previously, so maybe that's why it doesn't join without my help?
And if that's the case, what would be making it take longer to appear? Any ideas? Have reset everything. Plugging, unplugging, shutting down, restarting, etc. Did the reset button on the airport extreme itself, too.
I have the extreme, plus 2 expresses to extend my network. (also not a new set-up)
    TIA

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

  • My iMac won't automatically connect to wifi after waking from sleep mode

After dowloading the newest software update and performing a firmware update for my Airport router, my Imac won't connect to Wifi automatically after waking from sleep mode

Please re-download and install the 10.7.3 update. You can locate it at 10.7.3 (Client Combo). Follow the on-screen instructions. Then test it out, if you still have the same problem please restart, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option Key and then choose the Recovery Partition. Then open Disk Utilities and Repair Disk Permissions 2x. Then exit DU, restart normally and re-test.

  • Wifi no longer automatically connecting

Updated 4S to iOS 6. Now the device no longer connects to known networks automatically. Have to go in and manually log in via settings. Anyone else finding this?

I am having the same problem.  Especially when the signal is not full bars.  At home I don't have a problem connecting, but at work where I sit the signal is kind of weak, not unusable, just not max signal.  My phone used to, on iOS 5.1.1 connect right away and stay connected until I turned Wifi off to check my email.  Company blocks web based email so I have to use celluar to get to it.
But now the signal comes and goes all the time and I have to often times go in and forget the network and reconnect it, which means I also have to enter the proxy settings.
    Real pain.

  • 10.6.4 Update - 21.5" Imac no longer automatically sleep

After installing the 10.6.4 update my 21.5" imac now no longers go to sleep automatically. Its set to 15 minutes and was working fine yesterday. Now it just goes to a screensaver.
Anyone else got any ideas on how to resolve this?

    Bonjour,
After a long search on the web and a deep intervention in my system, I've found the culprit.
I tested then uninstalled 1Password but some files remained on the following directories,
~/Library/LaunchAgents Per-user agents provided by the user.
/Library/LaunchAgents Per-user agents provided by the administrator.
/Library/LaunchDaemons System-wide daemons provided by the administrator. /System/Library/LaunchAgents Per-user agents provided by Mac OS X.
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons System-wide daemons provided by Mac OS X.
preventing the iMac from sleeping and prompting error messages in the Console.
Have you tested an application then removed it, but the installation process wasn't clean enough? The Console could give you a hit.
The case is closed for me.
    Good luck!
