IMac not waking up

Hello everyone.
For some reason my 27" late 2012 iMac is not waking up properly. This seems to be since upgrading to Yosemite 10.10.1 - it never happened on vanilla 10.10.
What happens is this: I'll come back to my Mac for the first time in the day having left it asleep the last time I used it, and find it won't take at all - nothing happens on touching any keys or clicking the trackpad. Even pressing the power button does nothing - it might as well be off, if it weren't for the fact that pressing the power button if it was off would at least turn it on. The only way I've found to bring it back to life is a hard reboot by pulling the IEC out of the back, which is really something I'd obviously rather not have to do every time I want to use my computer.
I has assumed this was an issue with not waking from sleep, so yesterday after using my Mac I disabled computer sleep and just put the display to sleep, but today when I came to use it once again I was greeted with an unresponsive blank screen.
I've never had this sort of problem before so I'm not sure what troubleshooting steps to try.

Apart from the update to 10.10.1, did you install anything else? If you have the chance, test from Safe Mode without any applications open:

Can iMac not waking from sleep be caused be a corrupt file

I have had my 27" iMac from July of 2011 (running Montain Lion, 8 GB RAM, 2TB hardrive, 3.4 GHz,Intel i7) for over a year and a half and ever since I bought it, it has had a problem waking from sleep. I can hear the computer running, but when I click the mouse, keyboard, or power button, it stays asleep and I am forced to do a hard shut down. Apple has been trying to fix the issue, but to no success. They have replaced the hard drive, logic board, usb ports, RAM, mouse and keyboard, but it still happens. They finally threw in the towel and are replacing the machine. They offered to transfer all of our files (jpgs, mp3s, docs, videos, etc), but one thought occurred to me... what if the sleep issue is caused by a corrupt file? I highly doubt that is the case, but wonder if any of the experts out here would know better than I.
If we didin't have the data transfered, we would just keep it on an external hard drive instead. But, I would assume that it wouldn't matter if the files were on internal vs. external because either way, the computer would access the files. That being the case, if the sleep issue was caused by a corrupt file, the computer would still access it on the external and the sleep issue would resurface.
So, 2 questions:
Can a corrupt file cause the sleep issue?
If it is true that a corrupt file can cause the sleep issue, would it matter if the corrupt file was accessed from an external drive vs. internal drive?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Imac not waking

Not a question but hopefully an answer to what seems to be a common problem.
I have just taken delivery of a shiny new imac running Mountain Lion. I migrated software and files form my old imac without problem and reconnected all devices.
I found that when the imac went to sleep, nothing I did would wake it again, part from pulling out the power lead and putting it back in. I read about CMS resets and did that. Nothing doing.
So I rang Apple Care as the machine is still in its 90 day free support period. I spoke to someone called Tom who was extermely patient and helpful. He quickly identified the problem as something to do with attached hardware. By a necessarily long-winded process of elemination, we identified a USB hub as the source. Admittedly, it had worked fine with my old imac but the sleep process and waking, coupled with the optional Fusion drive installed in my machine, seems to work a little differently, and clearly does not play nicely with certain peripherals.
It probably won't solve everyone's problems but it might solve some.

24" iMac not waking up

I have a 24" iMac that's been great until the recent EFI update. When it goes to sleep I can't wake it. I have the wireless MM and kb, and they woke it before. I even plug in a usb mouse and keyboard, or hold the play/pause button on my front row remote, and nothing can wake it... I always have to resort to powering it down and restarting it. but then I have to repair permission and such, which takes forever with a 3/4 full 500GB drive. It doesn't always refuse to wake up, but more times than not, I have to recycle the power. I suppose I can prevent it from going tro sleep altogether... but for a nearly $3000 machine, it would be nice if it worked properly.

FIXED IT!! I did some research on other posts. Basically all you have to do is shut down your computer. Pull out the power cord from the back of your imac. Pull out all other cables (keyboard, upc)... Wait 15 seconds and replug. You should be fine. Then reboot.It fixed my problem. Here are the details that I got from the other board:

Try a simple SMC reset. The SMC (System Management Controller) controls all the power functions of your machine including telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so forth.

IMac not waking up from sleep after 10.6.6 combo update

Prior to update everything working fine, permissions repaired, file structures sound, no issues. After update, iMac won't wake up properly from sleep. Moving mouse (either Bluetooth or wired) has no reaction. Hitting key on keyboard (Apple aluminum extended wired keyboard) causes desktop screen to appear, but the spinning gear/pinwheel appears in screen center, and continues to spin. This continues and continues, no reponse from keyboard/mouse. Only work around has been to force quit computer and reboot. Problem repeats next time computer goes to sleep. Repairing permissions has not effect on issue, but now list of permissions getting repaired is very lengthy. Causes? Solutions?

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job. If you own one, run it first.
After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
Then, Try downloading the 10.6.6 Combo update, from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.

Late 2012 i7 iMac not waking up and also finding wifi enabled after I turned it off as I use ethernet

I have a late 2012 i7 3.4 imac with 32 GB ram. I am finding a perplexing issue and I hope someone may help me out. I am blessed with the inability to wake my mac up after an overnight sleep intermittently must push power off and then turn on again to reboot. I noticed since this started that the imac wifi is always turned on when I restart . i connect via Ethernet (FIOS). The wifi connection is a extension of my FIOS router wifi. Will there be any problems with wifi on along with Ethernet connection? The only software I have on my mac that shows it can work with either connection is CrashPlan.
I have no idea how the wifi enables itself as I do not activate it and the icon in the upper taskbar is an empty triangle usually. This am it was a triangle filled with black lines and when I checked it was enabled. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've got kind of a radical suggestion, if you want to try it. In cases like you describe a full OS restore, then setting the iPhone up as a new device can fix all these little glitches. It is a lot of trouble, I know, but if you do want to use the service this is one method that should clear it all up for you.
Thank you, it's good to know that Apple does offer refunds. I want it to work, if it does what I would like the $25 would be more than worth it.
I thought clearing my music and starting up iTunes Match with an empty music library might do the equivalent of a full reset... I can't say I really feel like doing that, and I'm skeptical it would clear up all of the issues I've had (play counts, play lists, album art, data usage when I told it to bloody well not use the data).

If it's an Apple mouse, make it "Favorite" in Bluetooth preferences.
If it's not, the same thing might help, too, but if the problem continues it could be a driver issue (possible incompatibility with your OS X version).

MacBook Pro not waking form sleep (sometimes)

My Macbook Pro is not waking from sleep (sometimes). To be very specific; the only time this happens is when it goes to sleep automatically, with the lid open, while plugged into the magsafe power cord. When I hit the space bar to wake it, the keyboard lights come on but the screen remains black. I do not have any problems with waking from sleep if I close the lid to force sleep (while plugged in). I also do not have any problems at all, if the computer goes to sleep while running on battery power. (I have had this MBP for about 18 months, the first year I had no issues at all. The problem started shortly after Lion was installed. (I also have a iMac with all the same software, almost identical set up, purchased at the same time as my MBP but have never had any sleep problems with the iMac, none even since Lion install.)
We do not have an Apple Store near us, but I have had the MBP in for service 3 seperate time to our local authorized Apple service/dealer. It is tricky to diagnose, because the problem does not happen every time. On average it won't wake from sleep 1 out of 3 times. Each time the service techs were able to re-create the problem but could not come up with a cause or solution, their only advice was to re-install Lion.
I have tried 2 different re-installs of Lion. (Both times erasing the hard drive first) The first time I did a clean re-install of Lion, then restored all of my data from Time Capsule. That did not work, the problem presisted. So I tried a second clean re-install of Lion and this time I did not restore from Time Capusle, I only re-installed critical docs from a flash drive and re-installed all other software (such as MS Office, Photoshop, etc.) from their original discs. I though this had fixed the problem but within a few days the problem re-occoured.
Any ideas would be appriciated, I have tried almost everything, I have days and days worth of time invested in trying to fix this issue. Thank you!

I had this problem with my MacBook Pro for a long time, and fixed it by changing the sleep mode. Here's how:
Open Terminal
Type the following:
     pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
It should say something like:
     hibernatemode 3
Here's an explanation of the different types of hibernate modes:
0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
5 - This is the same as mode 1, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory (in System Preferences -> Security).
7 - This is the same as mode 3, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory.
To change your sleep mode, use the following command:
     sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
(replace 0 with whatever hibernate mode you desire)
For my MacBook Pro, I changed it to 0, and it works great. It's super fast to wake and sleep, which is a plus. The only downside of hibernatemode 0 is that if your battery runs out your computer doesn't hibernate - it shuts off. This doesn't matter, though, because with Lion everything is autosaved, so really hibernate 0 is all plusses.

IMac not recognizing bluetooth nor USB mouse and keyboard

The iMac I use has suffered a pretty annoying problem. I typically use a wireless keyboard and magic mouse with the iMac (I could be wrong, but I believe these both use Bluetooth technology). First, the iMac stopped recognizing these. They kept losing connection last Friday and then suddenly stopped recognizing them at all. Yes, they both have full batteries and blink to show me they are on and searching for the iMac.
Second, I tried using a USB mouse and a USB keyboard to get into the iMac and fix the problem. But neither are recognized by the iMac as well. The mouse is a Dell model that has a red light on the bottom, and it glows red for less than a second when I plug it into the USB port before going dark again and not working. So, I can't get into the iMac to fix the problem.
I've read a few other things on the community boards. I restarted the iMac. I unplugged it completely for several minutes and held down the power button for fifteen seconds while the power was unplugged. I've tried multiple mice and keyboards, all to no effect.
Is the iMac not recognizing the USB keyboard/mouse because it's still searching for the bluetooth versions that it will no longer recognize? Is there a way to fix this without setting up an appointment with the geniuses?

I'm having the same problem. It started happening on my Late 2012 model iMac 21.5" after applying the latest update.
What I found was that nothing seemed to work connected directly to the iMac. However, if you attach an externally powered USB hub, then all devices attached to the hub will work. It seems as if the USB ports are still working, but without power.
After I was able to get my USB keyboard to work, I was able to zap the PRAM (hold command-option-P-R while powering on) and then magically everything was back to working again. Unfortunately, this was short lived as the problem has resufaced again for me today, but you could give it a try anyway.

Computers not waking up to install updates

Hi,
I wonder if someone will be able to help me. WSUS server is configured and working correctly. GPO settings are configured to wake up computers at 3AM, install and reboot them (use power management to wake up computers is enabled). All PCs are running Windows
8.1 Pro and they are domain joined. No problems are reported with group policy.
The problem is that computers are not waking up at all and users are forced to install updates and reboot them themselves. Is there a setting I'm missing?

Why does my iMac keep waking every 2 minutes from 2:00 in the morning?

Hi,
I awoke the other night and happened to notice my iMac keeps waking from sleep every 2 minutes from 2:00 in the morning. The screen doesn't come on, I hear the harddrive power up for a little while then stop, 2 minutes later it happens again.
I don't have "Wake for Network Access" on, and have tried turning off "Allow Bluetooth devices", I have also done a Virus Scan
I have been able to link the wake attempts to RTC (Alarm) - Real Time Clock. And I have also looked in the console although I don't really understand what is being logged, please see below.
I have OSX 10.10 (Yosemite) installed on a mid 2010 iMac, although I can't say how long this has been happening.
Any help is greatly appreciated

Somehow a new contact became associated with my email. Now all my email has her name on it. This happens only on my iMac, not on my other Apple devices. I have removed my email from her contact card and deleted her from previous recipients on Mail.

Check the settings in the Accounts for Mail.
Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Click on your email Account in the left column > What appears under Full Name in the right column?
If that is the incorrect name you're describing change it to your correct name.

Imac not booting, Able to get to disk ulility with snow leopard disk. Tap on had disk, not given choice to do anything. Information list that smart is certified and partition map is us formatted. How do I get mac to start up again?

Also tried to restore from back up, but get error: not enough disk space. Tried to erase disk, but unable. What do I do next to get mac to start up?

Thank you. That's what I thought will need to happen.
One more question. I tried using the Apple install disk that came with the computer. It's an OS 10.5.6 disk. It does not see my 10.6.8 system internal hard drive to repair. All it see's is itself 10.5.6 disk. Do you think I can use a 10.8+ disk utillity since that is a higher system it will see the 10.6.8. Where the 10.5.6 does not?
I don't want to turn the computer off for fear I'll get the question mark again. P-Ram got me going last time but for how long I don't know? It would be nice to be able to turn the computer off for the night and startup as usual to give it a rest and try to reset itself.
Thanks for your help, I know I will eventually need to re-install. But I am in the middle of a project with tight deadlines and all I can do right now is back-up. Trying to migrate to another computer temporarily to finish the job. That's a lot of extra work in the short time also.
Just trying to put a band-aid on it for another couple weeks.
