IMac online retailers

I am looking to purchase a new iMac 27". 3.06 ghz, 4 gb ram, 1 tb drive, with an upgrade to the HD 4850 graphics card. Any suggestions of online retailers that may have this product?
If I buy it from the Apple Store I pay Wisconsin sales tax of an additional 5.5%

1. Many online retailers do NOT sell BTO configurations. Amazon, for example.
2.

  • IMac - online store order

Thought I would post the following just to get some general feedback — has to do with a somewhat strange response we’ve received from Apple in association with the recent iMac order:
My wife and I placed an order for a brand-new 27 inch iMac 13 days ago. In the interim, Apple has changed the shipping times on new orders from 3-4 weeks down to 1-3 days (as of last Friday) and now down to 24 hours (as of 12-24 hours ago).
So naturally my wife and I thought we would be receiving notification sometime during the past couple of days that our iMac would be shipping out.
    No such luck.
Tracking the order online, it says it’s still expected to ship out March 26-March 30. (Configuration: 3.4 GHz Quad core, 3 TB Fusion drive, 8 GB RAM, 2 GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 680MX.)
After contacting Apple today, I was notified that they do not know why the order isn’t being shipped sooner and they cannot do anything regarding the order itself.
“So should I just cancel the order and place a new order?” was the question today. “After all, if it only takes 24 hours for shipping on the new order, might as well cancel this one and place a new one so we get it in just a few days time.”
The Apple representative did not advise this, saying it would take at least 5-7 business days for credit of the credit card we used, then we would need to start the process all over again.
Sorry, but I find this whole situation a bit frustrating, unnerving, and unusual… Especially for Apple.
My wife and I are of course willing to wait for the order to come in. But at the same time, we would think that Apple would go ahead and make sure all of the previously-ordered iMacs had been sent out before changing the online Store notification (3-4 weeks down to 1-3 days, down to 24 hours).
    Any thoughts…?

You should cancel the order and order it again. You don't lose anything, and this may or may not work. Also, note that yours is a build-to-order iMac (a customized iMac), so this takes more time than just one of the basic iMac configurations
In the USA, any custom configuration of the new 27" iMac will shoot up the delivery time by several weeks. They're already halfway through the estimated period of time to deliver a custom configured iMac. Cancelling doesn't make sense, unless they want one of the stock configurations, because they'll be resetting the clock to waiting 2-3 weeks.

  • Trouble with my iMac online

Whenever I am online with my 1 yr. old iMac desktop I have been experiencing various problems the last week or so.  When checking my email (att.net) I will get the spinning rainbow wheel so I have to close & reboot, sometimes having to do this several times before getting in to it.  Quite often I even have to reboot my wireless router (2 yr. old Linksys) before I'm able to get in.  Then while on some websites I will get a certificate verification error after I've already been surfing through a website I've been on many times before, ie. Facebook.  I had some redircting problems a few months ago & was advised the problem could be with my DNS (Comcast) so I changed it to OpenDNS & had no more problems until now.  Since I've been told by Apple that these computers can't get a virus I'm afraid I'm headed for some kind of failure.  BTW - all my software is up to date.  Could this be symptomatic of a wireless router going bad?  The last time my router went bad it just quit working so I'm not sure.  I hate to purchase a new router if that's not the problem as $$ is tight these days & I just had to replace my printer a couple weeks ago.  Any suggestions from anybody?  Thanks!

Well after researching my Linksys router, updating the firmware (which was already current) & tweaking various settings there was no change in the performance of my computer - both the Mac & PC laptop.  So a week ago (9/23/11) I purchased the Airport Extreme router.  I was amazed at how easy it was to link it to both computers - it took me longer to get the cables changed over than to establish an online connection!  Once I got on my computer was so much faster & the laptop responded as if it had just been cleaned by a tech!  My husband has been able to play his XBox while I'm online & neither one of us has experienced any delay.  The same goes for my son's PS3 - he can get on while we're on without a problem.  And while it has only been a week I haven't had to reboot the Mac like I was before & no rainbow wheels or site redirects so far.  I can't say there isn't a RAM memory issue but so far I am extremly happy with the router.  I know that while 2 yrs. shouldn't be a long time for a router, it probably can't handle all the WiFi items we've acquired since I bought it - WiFi printer, 3 smartphones, PS3 & now an iPad2 last week.  Hopefully this will end the problems I have had once & for all.
Thanks for all your input - I really appreciate it!!

  • Firefox 4 hangs when accessing the "Verified By Visa" capability used by many UK online retailers including Tesco & The National Lottery; is this a known problem?

I recently upgraded to Firefox 4 from version 3 and have experienced a problem when trying to purchase online using my Visa debit card.
UK stores and services are using the "Verified By Visa" system to double-check the validity of credit and debit cards and this capability is called by many stores at the end of their online payment process.
Firefox 4 does not seem able to handle this capability and 'hangs' once data has been entered into the "Verified By Visa" window and sent to the server. This means that the transaction cannot be completed and funds cannot be transferred from Visa to the retailer/service provider. I have experienced this 'hanging' problem with both Tesco online groceries and with the UK National Lottery online site.
Is this a known problem? I had no trouble using this service on these sites with the previous version of Firefox (3.6.8) but the error is solid in Version 4 of Firefox.
Anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?
NB. I have reverted to the previous version of Firefox temporarily, so the troubleshooting information attached will be of little relevance to this question.

Was having the same problem on the National Lottery website and their "Help" section amounts to an 0845 number, so I did a bit of rummaging online and found a solution.
I had Third Party cookies disabled , so I ticked the box to Accept them(under Tools>Options>Privacy), restarted FF, added funds and the "Verified by Visa" process works properly. I'll just turn it on & off as needed, as I prefer not to accept third party cookies normally.
Hope this helps someone else in the same position - very frustrating, especially when my VbyVisa statement recorded the failed transactions, even though neither my lottery account or my bank account showed any sign of them.

  • Looking for a instruction booklet for a Imac online

Hi, I am trying to find a booklet for a Imac, this is what I have on it it is a TMC 2008-2007, 512MBSDRAN 64 800 MHZ power.
    Thanks
    Karen

The booklet that shipped with your dad's computer will be the one that comes up when you input the serial number on the site we've referenced you to. That is the only manual that ships with the computer. If you want more information about how OS X works then you should probably go to your local Barnes & Noble and look for a book on OS X. First determine which version he's on which is either going to be 10.5.x (Leopard) or 10.6.x (Snow Leopard) and then pick out the book that best suits your needs.

  • Brand New iMac 24" internal or external hard drive upgrade to 1TB?

I just purchased a brand new iMac 24" MB325LL with a 320GB hard drive. I currently have 432GB of data on my PC and I would like to upgrade the hard drive to 1TB. I have 2 options and I need your advice:
    Option #1 » Cost:CDN*$255*
Buy a Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB from DirectCanada.com for CDN$155 (tax+shipping included). Get it installed by a certified Apple technician for CDN$100 in Toronto. I doubt I can get it installed for a lower fee.
    Option #2 » Cost:CDN*$317*
Buy a LaCie D2 1TB external hard drive with Firewire 800 for CDN$317 (tax+shipping included) either from a U.S. retailer (e.g. iUnitek) or a Canadian one. Prices at Canadian online retailers start from CDN$266 + CDN$37 (13% tax) + CDN$18 (shipping) = CDN$321, which is just CDN$4 more than in the States, taking into account the exchange rate.
So, there you. From the financial point of view, the incentive is to get an internal hard drive, which I don't mind at all. I'd like to install Vista on a 30-40GB partition, if that makes a difference. If I were to get an external hard drive, I would keep all of my data (e.g. music, movies, documents, music, etc) on it and reserve the internal 320GB hard drive for system files and OS.
What would justify paying a premium for an external hard drive other than portability? If I were to get one, I would need to be able to access it not only from my iMac's Vista partition, but also from my HP Vista laptop. Same applies to the internal hard drive. If I were to get a Samsung F1, I would still need to access my mac files from Vista's partition (when I boot into Vista) as well as from my HP Vista laptop (over wi-fi). FYI: I have no use for Time Machine, since I've never deleted a file which I needed to recover..well, maybe once or twice. What I DO need is a utility to synchronize files across machines. Hence, I will need some kind of program to automatically sync my iMac files with my HP laptop files. Currently, I utilize SyncBackSE to sync files between my HP laptop and my PC over Wi-Fi every morning at 6am. Works like a charm.
That's my dilemma in a nutshell. Any comments, suggestions and words of wisdom are welcome.
P.S. I'm also planning on upgrading RAM to 4GB. Newegg.ca is running a promotion (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251): $72 CDN minus $20 USD mail-in rebate. It's not related to my question in any way, but some Canadians might find this info relevant.

Well, I don't have the budget for both and as I've already pointed out, Time Machine does not address my needs. It's a great backup solution, but what I need is a synchronization solution. I need to have the same versions of basic files, such as music, photos, documents, and other miscellaneous stuff on my iMac and my HP Vista laptop. Even if I were to get a MacBook in the future, I would still need the same set-up. That way, if something happens to either my iMac or my MacBook, I would always be able to simply copy-paste files from one machine to another. That's, sort of, my version of a perfect backup solution...unless, there's an option to load up files from a Time Machine backup onto a separate one (e.g. MacBook). In the end, Time Machine only partially addresses my need in keeping 2 machines backed up in a sense that it only backs up one of them. My solution kills 2 birds with one stone. I would have 2 syncronized computers (e.g. iMac + HP Laptop, iMac + MacBook) AND both computers would serve as mutual backup sources, since whatever happens to one of them, I would always be able to copy data from the other.
The problem arises when I factor in the sheer number of gigabytes required on the portable computer to mirror everything from the iMac, whether be it a Windows laptop or a MacBook. I would always have more data on my iMac than the available space on a smaller hard drive. I now have 432GB of stuff and I can presume that this number will only grow. Hence, at any given time I would be able to synchronize only the most essential files to the laptop. Ideally, I would need a NAS which would collect = synchronize data from both machines. That way, whenever files get modified, changes would automatically be transferred to the NAS and routed further down the chain to the iMac. It would work both ways, obviously. In that scenario, I don't need to worry about any of the computers, since whichever one fails on me, I would always have a copy of the entire collection of files. Now, that I doubt Time Machine can accomplish.

  • PCI Option For iMac

I own a professional recording studio. The studio and the software I use was purchased with a Mac in mind from the start. Unfortunately after spending far too much money on my mics, outboard gear, mixing console and the rest the bank was broke and a Mac capable of running the studio was not in the budget. I had always had a tower in mind because it always was dominant Mac and could be expanded. Also for one major reason, use PCI based plugins and my interface for recording needs a PCI slot to run as well. With the advances in Mac over the last couple years months the iMac could fit my needs far better than a tower, and with a 24" screen, it would be ideal for mixing. Are there PCI options out there for iMacs, such as something that would plug in via firewire or ethernet? Thought I's ask the experts.
    thanks

I hate to disappoint you but iMacs are not designed for expansion. They do not have available PCI slots for third-party cards. For that you need a tower style Mac. You might consider something from the G4 or early G5 Power Mac tower lines such as the QuickSilver or Mirrored Drive Door G4s or one of the earlier G5 models that still have PCI slots. Later G5s have PCI-X slots. Because these are no longer in production they can be purchased used through eBay or some online retailers who vend used/refurbed older Macs.

  • Why won't iTunes 10.7 work with my iMac OS X?

I can't get my iPhone or my Ipad to sync with my iMac.  I am running OS X.  It won't accept the new version of iTunes

Devices purchased recently will require iTunes 10.7.  check the side of the box for exact system requirements (if it says iTunes 11 it should work with iTunes 10.7).  iTunes 10.7 requires OSX 10.6.8 or higher which in turn requires an Intel Mac.
    1) Make sure your computer meets Snow Leopard technical specifications - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575  This mostly means making sure it is an Intel Mac and has at least 1GB RAM (at least 2 GB is recommended).  Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac".  Does it mention  "PowerPC" (not Intel), or Intel? To check RAM continue to "More Info...".  It should say you have at least 1GB of "memory".
    2) Buy a Snow Leopard disc from Apple online
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard - USA
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard - UK
or telephone Apple. In the USA: (800) 676-2775 (contact information for other countries: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57)
Alternatively you can buy from online retailers but anticipate paying much more than the original price which is the price still charged by Apple
    3) Backing up your computer before upgrading is always a good idea.
    4) After installing from the DVD, update your Snow Leopard installation using Software Update or manually downloading and installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v.1.1 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
If the above does not seem to apply then you need to post back with complete information this time as to exact model computer (iMac is not enough since there's like 30 models), system software version, exact model information of the devices, iOS version running on each device.

  • Any internal hard drive upgrades available for iMac?

I have a 19 Gigabyte hard drive in my Imac running OS 10.4.11 and would like more storage. Is there a larger internal hard drive available from Apple or anyone else and at what approximate cost?

Your iMac uses the same 3.5" IDE/EIDE, Parallel ATA (PATA) - not Serial ATA (SATA), hard drives that are used in PCs. The onboard IDE controller will not recognize a capacity larger than 128 GBs, so any standard drive that's larger than that (160 GBs ->) will have unused capacity. A 120 GB drive was the optimal drive to install, but many manufacturers have discontinued that size. You should be able to find a 160 GB drive at any electronics, office supply, or computer store in your area, or you can check online retailers (like newegg.com) for a comparable drive. As an example, Micro Center is selling the Western Digital 160 GB (PATA) drive for $55. Seagate's drives are also a good choice, because of their 5-year warranty. After installing the drive, you should boot the iMac from the Tiger installer disk and use Disk Utility to format the new drive as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. You can also partition the drive into multiple volumes, if desired. This Macworld article will provide useful directions for opening up the iMac's lower housing and replacing the hard drive. As an alternative to replacing the internal hard drive, you could connect a FireWire external hard drive. The FireWire-connected drive wouldn't be subject to the 128 GB limitation, so you'd be able to use a mega-sized drive.

  • 24" iMac will not boot

My 2008 24" iMac started going into a continuous reboot cycle.  I attempted to restart it and then it just started to freeze at the Apple boot logo.  I have tried rebooting into safe mode and using the recovery partition and it just hangs while attempting to load.  I attempted to boot from the disc that came with the computer and I get a message to shutdown the computer by holding the power button.  I have reset the PRAM and SMU with no result.  I did successfully load and run the Apple Hardware Test in extended mode and it detected a hard drive problem.  I installed a new hard drive and attemped to do a clean install of OSX.  However, when I attempt to boot holding down the option key to choose the OSX install disc or a copy of OSX that I have on an external drive, it still will not go past the Apple logo and freezes.

So I took the iMac to the Apple store for service.  They confirmed my greatest fear...  Bad logic board.  The cost to replace this component was in the ball park of $700.  The techs at the Apple store provided daily communication as to the progress of their diagnosis.  In the end, I asked them to not do the repair and just button up the machine.  To my amazement, when I went to pick up the iMac they did not charge me a dime.  I then went and ordered a new 27" iMac online.

  • Does the iMac Ship in its' Original Box?

When you order an iMac online from the Apple Store, do they ship it in the original box or do they put the iMac box in another box?
Do you have to sign for the package? Can you instruct Apple to have the delivery company hold the package at the depot rather than try to deliver it when you know you won't be home?
    Thanks
    Kelvin

Both my iMac and MacBook came in a clearly marked box leving to doubt as to what is inside of it. Not good for security, but Apple does require a signature for larger items to be released. If no one is home to receive it, they will leave a notice and you can either arrange for another delivery or pick it up at the depot.

  • Why do we pay higher prices online using Firefox?

I just read this interesting article and wondered what you think and if it's true?
Should you pay more when you're shopping online simply because of the browser you're using? Some popular online retailers think so!
The New York Times reports shoppers are getting widely different prices based on whether they use Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari. Here are just two examples:
For the same Samsung TV on NewEgg.com, a Chrome user was offered a price of $997. Meanwhile, the price was $1,399 when using Firefox or Internet Explorer.
Another Samsung television model at Walmart.com was offered for $199 on Firefox and $168 on Chrome and Internet Explorer.
Meanwhile, Mac users could be paying a higher rate for hotel rooms on Orbitz.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Orbitz has been experimenting with a 30% premium on Mac users when they search for select hotel rooms versus PC users. That effectively works out to be around $20 to $30 more than a PC user.
When asked for explanation, Orbitz basically stated that Mac users make more money and are interested in fancier hotels. (There were no happy campers in the Apple world based on those comments!)
The best way for you to stay one step ahead of online retailers who are manipulating price is to use technology to fight back.
If you want an easy way to see if a quoted price is a deal or not, you can compare prices on websites like Decide.com or ShopoBot.com, or use a browser bookmarklet such as Hukkster.
Another alternative would be to install a browser plug-in like Invisible Hand that automatically pops up an alert while you're shopping if a better price is available on another website.
Finally, Amazon customers can typically get a better deal if they put something in their cart and then abandon it before the final purchase. That usually signals to Amazon that you're willling to walk away and triggers a lower price the next time you put it in your cart to checkout. Give it a try!

Locking post. Websites can change prices using a variety of methods that are beyond Firefox's control.

  • Getting an older iMac to use cable modem

I have a PowerBook G4 and a MacBook that are both using the AirPort Express wireless network that I have set up in my home. I have a cable modem and that modem has a ethernet cable that goes from the back of the modem and plugs into my AirPort Express. The back of the cable modem also has a USB port on it as well. Now, I also have a iMac G3 (with a translucent green and clear plastic case) that I am wanting to get online with the cable modem. The iMac G3 is running Mac OS X 10.1.4 with 64MB of RAM. I have a USB cable that can connect from the cable modem and then to that iMac G3. I am trying to find a way to connect the iMac to the cable modem WITHOUT having to buy anything and WITHOUT having to mess up my already setup wireless network. If someone can offer up some tips on how to accomplish this, I would appreciate it. If I need to change how my wireless network is set up a bit, that is fine. Just want to find a way to get all 3 computers on my network while still allowing the 2 laptops to remain on a wireless network. Thanks for any help in advance.

Hey again, Roger. So, here's the scoop. I got my Linksys router back. I unplugged my cable modem for starters. Then, I unplugged the ethernet cable from the modem that was coming from my Airport Express. I then plugged in a separate ethernet cable into the back of the modem and the other end into the WAN port on my Linksys router. I then took another ethernet cable and plugged one end into the iMac and the other end into an open LAN port on the router. I then plugged my cable modem back in. (It has no "on" or "off" switch) I then plugged the routers power cord into the back of it and the other end into a power strip. I checked the Network settings on the iMac to make sure they were all correct. I opened Internet Explorer (the only browser on the iMac) and I got an error of "The specified server cannot be found.". I found this a bit odd since I had everything connected correctly and the settings correct. Then, I tried restarting the iMac thinking that may do it. It didn't do anything. Then, just for kicks to see what would happen, I pushed the "reset" button on the back of the Linksys router and held that for a couple seconds. After releasing it, the router restarted and the lights were flashing on it again. Then I went and checked the settings again for the iMac and they were still correct. Then I typed in that IP address http://192.168.1.1/ and it asked for a password. I typed in that password and it brought up the settings for the router. I made sure they were all correct according to what you told me. I then tried going to http://www.apple.com/ to see if it would work yet. And this time it did. It connected just fine. I read in the manual for the router and it tells you to hit that reset button on the back after setting everything up. So, I got the iMac online just fine and dandy now. And everything should be working great, right?? Well, its not. Here's my problem. The iMac goes online just fine. I set the Airport Express to Bridge Mode just like you said. I checked the settings on both the MacBook and the PowerBook G4 to make sure they were right. I tried opening a website on both of the laptops and neither one of them wanted to connect. They could not find the Airport Express. Now, I am NOT saying what you told me is wrong. But what I am saying is this. I must have missed another setting or something somewhere that makes this work the way its supposed to. What else do I need to do in order for the laptops to find the Airport Express? I DID connect the ethernet cable coming from the Airport Express into an open LAN port on the router. So, I know that isn't the issue. Ha ha. There must be just 1 small thing I am missing and I need to know what it is. What are your thoughts?? Thanks.

  • True you can't clean install Intel iMacs?

    Hi,
When I get a new Mac I generally zero out the drive and reinstall the OS and apps from the provided install discs and run a clean system without all the extra languages, etc.
Somewhere on this forum I thought I read that the new Intel iMacs cannot be restored from the install discs after zeroing the HD.
Is this correct? If so, why not?

It doesn't matter if you clean install it or not as
far as bluetooth goes. When you first boot the
computer after a clean install, it will do a search
for a bluetooth mouse or keyboard by default.
    glor
I learned something very disturbing earlier today from Applecare Tech Support. I tried to boot from my install DVD (holding "c" down as instructed) but it hung. Tried three times with same result. When I called Applecare, they said you MUST HAVE A WIRED KEYBOARD AND MOUSE to boot from the install DVD because Bluetooth doesn't activate early enough for the wireless input devices to be seen in order to complete the various commands.
Their advice - go buy a USB keyboard and mouse so when I have to boot from the install DVD, I can!
This after I ordered my iMac online and PAID EXTRA for the wireless and, on top of that, was not sent a USB set along with the wireless. I feel a little ripped off...
