IMac's screen stays black

Went to wake up my iMac, heard the computer running but screen stayed black. I've tried restarting and unplugging and re-starting with no change. Any other suggestions?

If you don't know what a RAM disk is then you're almost certainly not using it. This was a feature in OS 9 to use RAM as very quick disk storage space. It was not enabled by default. Unless you've created a RAM disk (on Apple Menu > Control Panel > Memory) and saved files to it, you're safe).
Take care only to reset the PMU once.
You should probably start a new thread so you get more attention to your issue.

  • IMac starts with fan, screen stays black

When attempting to start my iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor), fans come on but screen stays black. A couple minutes later, the fans rev up and run very quickly and loudly. This started happening when:
    1. One day the screen showed a green question mark with a message indicating that the computer needed to be restarted in a box
    2. Green lines were all across the screen
    3. I forced it to shut down by holding down the power button
    4. When I attempted to start it back up the fans started but the screen stayed black
    5. After a couple of minutes, the fans revved up
This has been happening ever since. One time the computer started to the desktop but everything was frozen. I have reset the PMU, checked the diagnostic LEDs, reset the PRAM-basically everything suggested. Can anyone help? Thanks!

  • Imac G4 15" Screen Stays Black After Screen Saver Goes To Sleep

I have an imac G4 15" that I just got from a friend that works pretty well, except that after it goes from the screen saver into to sleep mode, the screen stays black. I can hear the error chimes when I try to awaken the screen with the keys, but the screen just stays black. I have tried to increase the brightness, etc. but to no avail. Eventually I have to resort to re-booting and I am afraid that at some point, either the computer won't reboot or one of my external hard drives will crash. Any advice from someone who has experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    THANKS!

  • IMac from 2010: sometimes the screen stays black, only restoring from backup helps.

    hello there dear community,
i have been a great fan of my imac and macbook eversince i first got them. but recently - probably since maverick - i am experiencing a series of problems with my 2010 27" imac. let me be more precise: eversince i got maverick, my imac keeps asking me to update every other day. usually i'm doing this or waiting for a couple of days. it's been exactly three times now that when my imac asked me to update and i postponed it that troubles occured. every single time i am not able to switch from sleep mode into the regular one. the screen stays black and the cursor is visible (and moveable). also i can clearly hear that the computer is on and working. the screen is black, but not in a mat kind of black but as if there was light behind it (i.e. the screen is switched on).
when this happened first, i called the apple support and we tried a lot of things and spoke for more than an hour. the only solution that worked out was pulling the plug, waiting, putting it back, restart the computer with cmd+r pressed and then restore the system from a backup that i had saved on an external drive. this of course takes time, usually up to four hours, but yes - it works. and i am very glad that there is a solution at all to this mess - but it's very idle.
now my question: there must be another way? or even better: how do i avoid that my imac falls to a sleep from which it can't really awake?
thank you for your patience and thank you for your help!
    cheers

For some reason its firmware seems to have been corrupted. Read:

  • Imac G5 20" makes startup sound, and fan kicks in, but screen stays black

Hello. I have read the many similar postings and tried alot of ideas with no luck. Here are the specs on the model:
    G5 20"/2.0/512mb/250gb/Super/56k/BT/AP EMC2056 Model A1076
When you push the power button, you get the bootup sound, and the fan turns on. Then 30 seconds later, the fan goes into hyperdrive. The whole time the screen stays black. I have tried resetting the pram, get no sound then. I have tried the internal startup button below the fan housing, and it does NOT have the 2nd button there as it is an ambient light model. So I held the power button and plugged in the power cord, still nothing. When plugged in, the 1st green light lights up on logic board. When I hit the power, the 2nd green light lights up. I have tried an external monitor with the adapter plug and still no picture. I do not even hear the hardrive try to read. Could it be a power supply? What are the other 2 lights on the logic board for, as there are a total of 4? I have not tried to boot from a cd or change the battery yet. I don't know if there is a point in doing that, as the screen remains black. I cannot use a conventional pc power supply tester either. Any other ideas on this situation?

"Could it be a power supply?"
More than likely if everything else possible has been ruled out. Your model G5 had an extension repair program which has long expired for your exact issue. Shame you missed it.
"I have not tried to boot from a cd or change the battery yet. I don't know if there is a point in doing that, as the screen remains black."
You won't know if it will do any good until you at least give it try. You should also run Apple's Hardware Test from the Install DVD #1. The DVD label will tell you which key to boot up from to run the AHT.

  • Imac turns on but screen stays black ?

imac turns on but screen stays black ? i can hear it operating ...

    Hope this helps:
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • HT201177 When I turn my computer on, I can hear it starting up but the screen stays black.  Anyone know how to fix this?

When I start up my compute, I can hear it starting up but the screen stays black.  Has anyone else had this problem and found a fix?

If you press the caps lock key does it light up? If it does then this indicates that your system is booting but the display is either not recognized, is not displaying any video, or the display is displaying video but the backlight system is not lighting up. As long as you've tried turning up the brightness then there is not much you can do other than take it in for a diagnosis. If you have a very bright flashlight you can turn on the iMac and then shine the flashlight onto various areas of the iMac display to see if you can see any faint images on the display. If you do then this indicates that the display is displaying the image, but the backlight is not turning on for some reason. It doesn't change the outcome, but at least you can assist the technician who is troubleshooting your iMac.
Please let us know what you find out.

  • Satellite A200 screen stays black when trying to boot

    Hello everyone,
My Toshiba Satellite A200 notebook is not working anymore, so everything started when I was playing a game, suddenly, the screen turned blue with some tiny text written on it. I had to hold the power button a few seconds to close it because nothing was happening on the computer. I then pressed the power button to open it. Everthing was going well, until the welcome screen. At this part, it was written "Welcome" but the Vista loading circle left of it wasn't turning.
After a few seconds, I decided to close the computer again, so I did hold the power button so the computer closed. Here is the problem : I tried to reopen it, but the screen stayed black. Nothing was happening. The power light was blue, but not any computer activity. So I let it like that a few minutes then closed it and tried again, but the same thing happened. I tried to disassemble it and noticed one of the two memory card wasn't fully in its slot. I fixed it, but it didn't fix the problem.
I also tried to plug another screen on it, but that one was also black. So I put back the screen on its computer and tried to boot my laptop and it worked. It was booting, but the first problem came back, the Welcome screen was frooze there. So yes I did close it again and then the same thing happened, the screen stayed black.
I don't think the problem is the screen because as I said sometime it goes to the welcome screen. Also I don't hear any welcome sound when the screen stays black as if the computer would simply not start up. And as I said earlier, I don't see any computer activity on the little light in front of the computer. And left of this one, I clearly see that the computer is ON because the power light is blue.
So this is my problem, next time the computer manages to start up I'll try to boot it on the SAFE MODE, but until then, I don't know what to do. Please, help me.
    Thanks in advance,
    MrRoy
    EDIT :
After letting the computer turned off for about 30 minutes, I started it, and booted in safe mode. At this step, I securely closed my comptuer with the shut down button instead on holding the power button. Then I reopened my computer, and it booted and the problem was fixed. Now my notebook is openened and working.
So if this is happening to you :
    1. Shut down you computer.
    2. Wait for about 30 minutes.
    3. Boot in safe mode
    4. Shut it down using the shut down button istead off holding the power button.
    That should work.

Finally, it doesn't work. I don't know why but my computer did start up after the 30 minutes, but now it's not working anymore. It just won't startup like I said later, with a black screen.
The computer did work for about half an hour. I mean, I managed to start it up but after executing a program, it just froze and I had to hold the power button to restart it. I did it about 3 or 4 times, then it simply did the black screen again. I think the problem is my processor, maybe it's damaged or something, could it be possible?
Because I see that the processor isn't working when I try to start it up.
So let's say it's damaged, would that be the symptoms of my computer?
And if it's the processor, the only way to fix it is to send it to a reparator or something, because I don't feel like it, I'd rather do it myself.
But right now, my computer is simply not booting, like I said in my previous post.
    Thanks in advance,
    MrRoy

  • How do i fix my iod touch... screen stays black

how do i fix my iod touch..... the screen stays black with the apple logo then cuts off again after like 5 minutes..... someone please help me ?

Please tell me it's not jailbroken.  If it is, all bets are off.  It is not...
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • IBook screen stays black at reboot no matter what keys I hold down

Hi, I posted a very similar issue a while back and was able to resolve it with some people's help:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=13196227#13196227
This time, I had to force shutdown cause the finder wasn't responding when I was transferring a movie to AppleTV. But now when I try to reboot, the screen stays black no matter what. I've tried booting while holding C, holding the mouse button and alt, but nothing brings me to the boot screen like last time. Similarly, I was low on Gigs, but I had a couple left and was in the process of making room. Would really appreciate any hep. I feel like a moron .

Were you getting warning messages that the hard drive is almost full? You may have corrupted the files on the HD.
Will it boot in Safe Mode? See What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392 Takes a while to run, but it usually "fixes" some problems.

  • Start-up problem with my Macbook - light stays on and screen stays black?!

Hi, sometimes when I start up my Macbook the switch-on light stays on and the screen stays black. Then I have to turn it off and when I restart it boots normally. What can this be? I resetted already the PRAM and the firmware is up to date. Perhaps someone understands german. Therefore I added my german post... Many thanks in advance!

    Hi,
put me on the list as well. I was already in contact with ADC and it seems to me that they acknowledged it as a bug. I'm using a Mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter. And sporadically when unplugging it the internal display stays black or switches to the blue background and hangs there.
As I heard from friends who are using the Mini-DVI-to-DVI adapter in the same use case, this doesn't happen to them.
