IMac Superdrive

I have tryed looking for input on how to erase the firmware and reinstall it to reset it from being corrupt like most PC computers when the hardware starts acting werid but no solutions on how to. Currently the CD=Rom does not load CD's or DVD's only the ones it would like to allow me to. Some CD/DVD are just fine others that are not dirty will not load at all. I am trying to do an Firmware restore CD load, but it will not allow me to Boot to the CD. Either from the "C" or by using the Option key to select and boot to it. I also cannot see a CD icon in Startup Disk in Sys Pref. The icon on the right side shows "No Drives." This is in my Sys Info window under ATA devices "This computer doesn't contain any ATA devices. If you installed ATA devices, make sure they're connected and powered on." And under Disk Burning this comes up "No disc burning device was found. If the device is external, make sure it’s connected and turned on." It seems my computer does not have a superdrive. I have hardware in it, just trying to solve the problem with the disk not injecting/ejecting running cd/dvd but only when it would like to, and having its mind of its own. I would like to find the way to remove the firmware, and reinstall the firm itself from scratch. Ect. Esentially I would like to Wipe it all completely and build it back up, peice by peice, otherwise im back PC, and this one I will watch burn in a fire, with included intentual Souls. I only want it to work correctly for me and not ruin my life trying to fix it. It currently is a 9,1 iMac with Lion 10.7.xx SN QP911 I dont know what is wrong with the iMac and why for this model only is thier so many problems with it, and yes, "IT IS JUST ME." These are the following things I find to be wrong with it. In the Recovered Partion are thier disk images named "Unknown" about 10-15 of them hidden inside itself, thoughout the hidden par. The recovery part is not hidden and locked. All the firmware is written and corrupt. Amongst the many various hidden entities inside the operating software. I mean its just a computer but for the people who decide to do these things, Will Burn. As it does mean just that much to me.
Burn, ect ect

Murder me then also

Jurgen,
Page 36 of the iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor) Hardware Developer's note has a very nice table depicting CD/DVD types. And yes, it supports both.

iMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also plays fine on Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
    Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
    etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

  • External Drive replacement for iMac "SuperDrive" ?

From reading this forum, it seems some iMac SuperDrives (mine included) have serious problems with reading and/or scratching discs. Apparently the only real solution is to use an external drive.
Can anyone recommend an external drive (USB or Firewire 800) that is compatible with the Mac CD and DVD disk-burning functions, iMovie and iDVD, will download software, play movie DVDs, and music CDs? In other words, it should do everything the SuperDrive is supposed to do. Also, it should last more than 6 months!
    Thanks!

only store they have is by chicago, which is also their office & where all of their tech support staff are located. they have hrs you can call in 7 days a week for help & are great about fixing or replacing anything that quits. haven't heard the same about lacie at all. the lacie drive are prettier tho, but seem more expenisve for what you actually get, imo.

  • IMAC SUPERDRIVE EJECTS Blank DVDs

My Imac Superdrive ejects all blank dvd but can read all movie dvd. Is there anyway to fix it ?

Hi i have the iMac mid 2007, and my superdrive have always been noicy. So i bought an external DVD bruner (samsung) works great, so the interna would not break down. Despite my prudence my internal superdrive are broken now. kjhfhf
    Can´t read, can´t write, can´t do nothing.
Several users has hade problems with these drivers, maybe Apple would extend warrent on thise lousy gizmo´s.
Or make the superdrive like a cassette, so just a push on the side of the iMac makes the superdrive "pop out". So you dont have to demolishe the whole computer just to replace it.
Somtime i wish i worked at Apple so i colud show how a knife-grinder sholud be pulled.

  • Cannot eject disc from iMAC superdrive

When I insert a CD or DVD into my iMAC superdrive it is recognised and will play but then it is not displayed in the finder sidebar. consequently I cannot eject the disc. The only way to eject is to restart the machine.

    1. Click on Finder or your Desktop and with Finder on the Menu Bar open Finder Preferences. Next click on the Sidebar tab in Finder Preferences and make sure that (CDs, DVDs and iPods) is checked.
    2. Also check the General tab if you would like these things to also show up on your Desktop.
Lastly you should also be able to Eject CDs & DVDs using the Eject button on the Menu Bar.

  • How can I make an ISO or IMG file from a cdrom on my IMAC Superdrive.

I would prefer IMG file but ISO would also work. Please help me make one or both of these using my IMAC superdrive from a cdrom.
    Thanks
    Leon

With the disc in the drive, open Disk Utility in /Applications/Utilites. Select the CD in the list on the left. Then click the New Image button. This will create a .dmg file, which replaces the old .img file type.
Alternatively, there is some software which will do this in a drag and drop fashion: http://c-command.com/dropdmg/

  • IMac SuperDrive with Windows 8.1

After installing BootCamp drivers on my iMac 2011 27 inch (Mavericks, Windows 8.1) the internal SuperDrive disappears.
Before installing them I could use the SuperDrive. With Mavericks I haven't any problems with the Drive.
I think there went something wrong with the Apple Drivers.
    Can anyone help me?

I am having the same problem. Everything worked great with the 8.1 install, then the superdrive disappeared in Windows only. I tryed the registry command you pasted to the forum, but it too does not work. I open the dos prompt in administrator mode, it says its an invalid command. My machine is a mid 2011 21.5 IMAC 2.7 GHZ 12 GB ram  OSX mavericks.
Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

  • IMac SuperDrive stopped working with Mountain Lion 10.8.2

HELP! My IMac was patched last yesterday and the SuperDrive has stopped working. The drive is empty but I cannot insert a CD into it.
Should I have to await another patch from Apple? Can someone recommend another solution I can use today?

    Thanks

@BDAqua, Thank you for taking the time to respond.
When I insert a disc into the drive, the drive does not load it. Until yesterday, before the latest patch was applied, the drive used to sense that a disc was being inserted, it would automatically draw it in and load it.
Brian at Apple Support led me through the PRAM reset and also a filesystem check but neither of them resolved the issue. I guess I am now faced with two possible options
    a) reinstall Mountain Lion from scratch (reminds me of the days when I was using Windows, never expected to get into a similar situation with a Mac!), or
    b) there is a hardware failure, coincident with the patches applied yesterday
    Are there any other options?
    Thanks

  • 24'' iMac SuperDrive Problem

I have a problem with my iMac's SuperDrive. I have a DVD recorder for my TV, and I recorded a movie to a DVD-R. When I insert the DVD into the iMac, the drive spins for a long time, then mounts an empty CDR onto the desktop. I have no idea what's going on. Does the iMac not play DVD-Rs? Help would be greatly appreciated.

I am quessing that the problem is not with your iMac's Superdrive.
DVD is not as straight forward as one might think. There is a big difference in Recorders and Burners.
I am also quessing the DVD recorder for your TV is recording using a different Codec than that used for Mac.
Most software that comes with different components differ a lot.
Many of the software on the market today give the user options to burn for PC only as well as Mac only and PC or Mac compatible so there are 3 options.
Remember you also have settings. Go to your Apple, then choose System Preferences next choose CD/DVD and this will open a box that allows you to select what you want to happen when you insert a Blank CD or DVD as well as commercial Media.
I'll bet that if you insert this same DVD you burned in a PC it will play, this will tell you that PC only software is used by your DVD Recorder for your TV.
There is so much information to digest about DVD Format's, Software, Speed, Media, any and all of these can have effect on your ability to read and write.
If I may suggest do a Google seaarch and you can get a ton of information like these.
    Quality of Media.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
    Differences in Media.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
How to burn with Mac supplied Software.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303599
So after looking at these you can see there can be more than one problem.

  • Replacing iMac SuperDrive

My iMac G4 SuperDrive has been not been working for over a month now and it seems Apple have nothing to say on the subject, despite all the posts (see CDs/DVDs Not Reading At All http://discussions.info.apple.com/.689df994/103 - I'm in there somewhere!). My iMac is half-useless without its optical drive, so I'm going to have to get a new one. I don't really want the hassle of installing an internal one, so I've been looking at external drives. LaCie has a 16X dual layer FireWire burner (designed by FA Porsche, apparently) on the Irish online Apple Store for €129 (about $160). It's not a d2, BTW. It seems to do everything I want it to, but I can't find any reviews of it. Anybody know anything about it? Or know of a better/cheaper one?

My internal drive quit working also I bought a plextor 716 to replace it. But when I had the old drive out I opened it and the laser was coated with a film!!! So I cleaned the lense with the cloth I use for glasses. Put the drive back together. and then put the system back together for the heck of it. WORKS not I have the internal and the plextor in a external firewire case and both work great.
So the moral of the story try cleaning the lense. (yes a used a cd/dvd cleaner all the time but over time there was still a build up that couldn't be cleaned off)

  • New iMac superdrive DVD+R ???

I noticed in the tech specs of the new iMacs, the superdrive is "DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW".
Is DVD+R better than DVD-R ? Whats the difference?

I might be in the wrong forum, but what the heck. I have a similar problem. I have a two week old 17" PowerBook G4 with the new Superdrive that writes in DVD-DL. Anyway, I backed up a ton on data from a variety of computers I had around here (20 Dual-layer DVDs) by copying and pasting data to the DVD-DLs using the finder in Tiger. They work fine on the PowerBook but will not play on a 1st generation 20" iMac G5 (1.8 GHz, 1GB SDRAM, running 10.3.9) with a Superdrive. It just spits them out. I thought that older Superdrives could play (but not write to) DL DVDs. Any suggestions on how I can get them to play on older Macs with Superdrives (i.e. 867MHz PowerMac G4 Quicksilver, Flat Panel iMac G4s, and 1st generation iMac G5s)? I just noticed that the DVDs I used were Verbatim DVD+R DL, could this be why they will not play in older Superdrives, perhaps I should have used DVD-R DL?
    Thanks

  • Imac SuperDrive USB extension power

I have a late 2013 imac, and a USB SuperDrive.
I want my SuperDrive to be permanently plugged into the imac, but not as close as I have to have it, with the short wire it unfortunately has.
I thought a USB extension would be ok. But, I now realise an extension cable does not carry enough power.
(I know the drive is USB 2, and the imac USB 3 backwards compatible to 2 and 1).
I have now read that powered USB hubs are no good for powering the drive. (Probably because apple are making things difficult on purpose) they do not want cd drives. They want us to download everything from them!! Not always possible I'm afraid.
So my question is, how do I run my SuperDrive permanently at a distance of approx 1 metre away from my imac?
    Thanks.

Looking at the one you use, makes me realise how slim and neat mine is. ( no offence meant ).
    None taken!
My problem is, that I need a reliable truck and not a finicky little sports car.
Also who's to say the cable length of them will be enough of a distance for me. ( I know where I want it and it will need at least 1 metre )
Additionally I have no problem using it with a USB Hub or Extension cable, because it has it own power supply.
Besides, it is parked over on the side in a cubby and not out front for the windoz 8 critics to see.

  • IMac superdrive not accepting disks

I have a 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3 iMac that will not accept CDs or DVDs. When I attempt to load a CD/DVD the disk gets stuck half way in, as if there was a disk already in the superdrive (which there isn't, having checked in finder, disk utility, etc). I have tried resetting the SMC but without any success. Is this (yet another) faulty drive or does anybody have any other fixes?
    Thanks

If it will Not accept any disks AND there is definitely not one already in it, it has unfortunately died.  I would recommend if you are not under Warranty, getting an External USB DVD/CD writer from a name brand such as LG from Amazon.com or such for about $30 US.  Much cheaper than Apple's and works fine.

  • Imac superdrive dead

imac 10.8.2 Mountain Lion superdrive will not accept DVDs;  just takes them in whirls them around and 15 seconds later spits them out.  Any fixes or is it down to the Apple store and take a holiday for 5 days?

First, try resetting the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 In some cases, it may repair that problem if it's software-related.
If it doesn't work, the only thing you can do is to take the computer to an Apple Store. The repair time will depend if the Apple Store has got the SuperDrive that your Mac needs in stock, because in some cases, it may be repaired the same day you take the computer
