Imac vs powermac

I am a graphic designer (just using Illustrator and photoshop) and I have always used powermacs but I'm now thinking of getting a 23 inch 3.06gig imac for my next upgrade.
I currently use a dual 2 gig power pc from 2005 and have been searching for a speed comparison but can't find one.
Can anyone tell me what kind of a speed boost I might expect from the latest imacs?

Prince,
I too am a graphic artist, and I will say there is a noticeable difference in what you are looking to do. BUt if you are using CS2, you will not see to much of a difference as you would running CS3.
As you can see I have an IMac G5 at home, But at work I am using an INtel 2x2.66 GHz Dual Core with 6 GB of RAM. It flies for the stuff we do here.
I'm sorry I don't know actual benchmarks, but there is a difference.

  • IMac G5 PowerMac wont boot up

When I try to boot up iMac G5 PowerMac, it turns on the sleep light, no screen and then all of the fans get into turbo mode. Please help!!

Is the light blinking in a pattern?
Fans will come on full speed if no OS is loaded to control them.
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

Does anything show on screen if you hold alt key at bootup?

  • IMac vs Powermac for FCP

I am debating between an iMac and PowerMac for FCP editing. I am primarily a shooter but would like to offer editing to clients as well. Don't anticipate anything to graphics or effects intensive. For fairly simple editing does the PowerMac have a huge ($1500) advantage over the top of the line iMac?

    iMac:
DV, HDV, DVCPRO HD (possibly) and maybe AVCHD only. Those are the ONLY formats you can edit. I say possibly with DVCPRO HD because the ONLY drives you can use on an iMac are firewire drives. Those are fine for DVCPRO HD (Firewire 800 required), but only for working with P2 DVCPRO HD...nothing from tape. You only have one firewire bus, so capturing using that bus for the camera, AND for the drive is sketchy. Will work most of the time, but not all of the time. Forget Uncompressed SD or HD...not gonna work. The ONLY thing you can upgrade is the RAM...that's it. So Motion will work fine, but not optimally with the graphics card already in place.
    Mac Pro: great expandibility
YOu can install different graphics cards, install capture cards for working with uncompressed HD and SD...and can install eSATA cards for working with faster drives. It comes with 4 internal drive slots, three empty, so that you can install fast drives internally that will work with uncompressed SD and DVCPRO HD and ProRes (ProRes on the iMac will be iffy).
Mac Pro is a professional machine, and iMac is a consumer machine. If you work with DV and HDV only, and only need firewire drives, it should be fine. But that's about all you can do with it.

  • Networking my iMac and Powermac 8600 thru ethernet

    Hi,
Yesterday I was able to connect my iMac and PowerMac to my Belkin wireless router and then use file sharing to share files plus I could access the internet. My iMac runs OS X 10.3.9 while my PowerMac runs OS 9.2.2. I cant get my PowerMac to do anything anymore. Its reconised by the router but it wont go online, or fileshare.
    Please help!!
    Thanks

Find the IP of the iMac in system profiler, under network, it should be something like 192.168.1.100 or something like that. Write that down as you will need it for the 8600.
On the 8600, in 9.2.2. Open the TCP/IP control panel.
    Configure it using manual.
Based on the iMac's IP number you found ( I'll use the default of 192.168.1.100 for the iMac)
The 8600 will need the IP of: 192.168.1.101
    The subnet is usually: 255.255.255.0
    The router is sually: 192.168.1.1
Apple talk must be active on both computers.
There is an Assist Me at the bottom of the network prefs pane in OSX. It can help you find things automatically, but you need to make sure the 8600 is etherned and has Apple Talk on.
    Good luck

  • New mac mini and imac vs powermac G5 running FCP studio

I want to compare running the FCP suite on the new max minis and imacs that came out today vs what I am currently using:
Currently I am running FCP Studio on a Powermac G5 dual 2GHz with one gig of ram. I believe the frontside bus is 1GHz. I believe the stock video card isan ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP 8X Pro) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
With this being said, is it safe to assume that the new entry level mac mini would surpass my G5 in terms of performnce in both video (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with128MB or 256MB of shared DDR3) memory processing (intel core2 duo 2GHz)?
If not would the two low end Imacs (using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory) and processing power handle FCP studio better than my current powermac G5 setup listed above?
I am wondering because I spoke to a apple sales person who transfered me to a system engineer that said I'd have a slow time rendering video on FCP with the mac minis as well as the 2 low end imacs. This may be but Im wondering if it is still better than what I am using
I appreciate your opinions, but please only answer if you really know,
    Thanks!

For FCP/FCS I would not save on anything but will get the max what my budget allow. You will be always doing more and the workflow in FCS will entice you to open almost all apps in FCS concurrently to make use of the advanced features. I think that the new iMac are powerful enough to handle FCS, but once again, the extra dollars will save you alot of pain. FCS is a pro app and is not to be underestimated. Good luck.

  • FCP (studio):  imac vs. powermac

I am purchasing a new mac. I know using a powermac will be better, but for the price will I really see that big of a difference using the iMac(2.1) vs. the dual core 2.0? and, will the standared graphics cards offered be much different? thanks for the help!!
      Mac OS X (10.2.x)

FCP will run on either, but if speed has any weight in your decision making, go with the faster machine. The Power Mac has always been the multi-media design workhorse, and while the iMac may reflect a few of it's attributes, it isn't the same machine.
Having said that, I have edited on an eMac, an iBook, a Powermac G3, G4, and G5- but the faster machine always gets the job done... faster! The way I fugure it, a cheaper computer lowers my overhead, so I can charge less- but if I bill by the hour am I really saving the client any $? Also, if you are thinking of doing multiple/long projects, you will want expandability. My system software (FCP Studio, Dreamweaver, Adobe, etc.) takes up nearly half of my 150GB system drive, and my 150GB scratch drive is almost always full, and in turn overflows onto my 300GB external drive. If that isn't enough, I can easily order a few 250GB HDs and have them installed in less then five minutes due to the nature of the powermac- something I can't do with an iMac. Worth thinking about...

  • IMac G5 + PowerMac G5

I know this is stupid but...
I heard something where you can hook up an iMac G5 to the PowerMac G5 and both will work better. Can this be possible

Possibly this is a reference to linking the CPUs, like how supercomputers are created by putting together many CPUs. However, this would probably take a huge amount of know how, and I'm guessing would not work with a proprietary OS like OSX or Windows. You would probably need an open source 'NIX system. But not worth the time/effort. Anyway, nice to see a Valley person on the disscussions, Chabil! Modesto has a plethora of good Indian restaraunts, while Fresno is sadly lacking...:)

  • 1.8 intel dual core imac vs powermac g5 1.8  for same price

    Power Mac G5 1.8 GHz/ 256MB/ 80GB/ SuperDrive/ vs iMac 17-inch 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo. same price
which is better for graphics. seems the imac is a much better deal though no universal disks for photoshop yet.
could someone help me sort this out. i can't find this particular battle with search.

    thanx michael.
your advice is sound. but it is still such a tough choice.
i love that the powermac is expandable and runs cs2 really quickly but i bet that the intel imac is really faster in every way when adobe becomes native on the new imacs. i mean doesn't the imac have a much faster gpu and cpu and ram and larger hdd than the powermac that i listed. i just hate that the intel imac doesn't support any of the apps that i need. it is like apple planned it this way so that the consumer model wouldn't step on the toes of the power mac line before they offer faster intel chips too. it makes the imac useless for why i need it. but it is a better deal than the ppowermac from 2003. it is a really hard choice.

  • IMac or Powermac?

    Hi everyone,
sorry for such a HUGE question. Specifically I'm interested in why paying a premium for a Powermac may turn out less expensive if I plan on less hardware turnover in the future. Does it really pay off to buy a Powermac, which can be tweaked and updated with additional hardware? What comes to your mind?
    Thanks for your input!

Yes, if speed is more important than cost, get the Powermac. If you won't be doing anything processor intensive, get the iMac.
I've been buying Macs for 15 years now, and I've been looking at the expansion capabilities when making a decision on what model to buy. But the reality is, every single time, by the time my computer needs to be "expanded" with something, a newer, faster Mac (with more ports) comes around that makes my old Mac obsolete, so I just go ahead and buy the newer, better Mac and sell the old one. Whenever I spend the money to upgrade/expand the old one, I end up buying the newer model in a few months anyway. Money wasted.

    Hello Niel
Thanks. I didn't realize that I can get up to a TB! Wow! What type of TB do I buy, any suggestions of specific ones? Is there G5 specific Tb disks to install? Or just any as long as they have the right measurement size? And what size do I need to remain within?

  • IMac vs Powermac G5

Hi, I'm a long time PC user that bought a powerbook a few months ago and totally LOVE it.
I am now going to buy a desktop computer and am wondering if I should buy a new iMac (20")
I am not a power user, but plan to create DVD's and work with photos and such.
I like the fact that the iMac is all in one unit, but I like to have a fast unit that I will be happy with in the long run.
Can anyone please give me some reccomendations on which way I should go? Also, my powerbook is not the new Intel chip, and am a bit worried about buying such a new product.
    What do you think?
thanks for any help you can give.
    Sharon

I have one of the original G5 iMacs (rev. A) and I use it extensively for making CD's. some DVD's, limited photowork and the like. I have had no problem at all with it. I only have 512 MB RAM and it does well, although, I'm sure more RAM would help. The new iMac with the Intel proc is reputed to be very snappy in performance. If you do buy one, get the 20" monitor as I understand the clarity is superior to the 17" monitor.

  • Imac G5 (powermac 8,2) detachable stand

I read on this forum that it is possible to detach the stand from an imac G5, but does anybody know where could I find the instructions on how to, please?

I looked at the diy instructions for replacing the back cover and stand, apparently the stand is not supplied as a single part.
However, looking at the instructions, I would think that if you take that back cover off, the stand is attached to it by some screws, removing the screws and detaching the stand whould allow you to replace the back cover and have the stand as a separate piece.
In short, take the back off, remove the stand and put the back on again.
Hope this is what you want,
    Miriam.

  • HELP! iMac G5 hangs at blue screen, but boots in Safe Mode

Please can anyone guide me to recover my iMac G5 PowerMac 8,2 running OS X 10.4.11.
Problem; Mac hangs on start-up at blue screen after grey Apple screen. Mouse pointer eventually appears but that is all.
Actions taken so far without success:
    1.  Disconnected the printer and rebooted - no success.
    2. Booted in Safe Mode - first time the screen was completely scrambled but with safe mode log on screen showing through.
2.1 Rebooted in Safe Mode OK This has not occurred again and I have entered Safe Mode twice more without problems.  But worrying!
2.2  In Safe Mode I ran disk Utility and verified and repaired Permissions, mostly old EpsonPrinter files.
2.3  I also verified the Disk, which was reported OK.
2.4  I was able to save critical documents to USB............  Phew!
2.5  Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    3. Reset PRAM
3.1 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    4. Reboot in Safe mode - works fine.  NOTE: time and date appear to be correct and dont need resetting.
4.1 Run Disk Utility again and Verify Permissions - OK.  Nothing needed fixing.
4.2 Run Disk Verify - Passed OK
4.3 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success.  Hangs at blue screen with mouse pointer visible and working.  Then pointer vanishes.
I would be most grateful for your help in moving this forward

Got to figure out which which of the things dropped when you boot in safe mode is causing the problem.

  • Imac G5, can i run an OSX intel app ?

    Hi everybody.
I have an IMAC G5 Powermac.
I would like to exec an OSX intel application in my computer.
    Is it possible ?
    Thanks in advance.

    No.
See if the developers can provide a 'universal' version of the application, i.e. one that works on bothPPC as well as Intel based Macs.

  • New iMac with iSight won't take image

Hello all, hope you can help.
At my place of work we use a standard image on all of our client Macs. I have used this same image to setup G3 iMacs, G3 Powermacs, G4 Powermacs, G4 Powerbooks and G5 iMacs. When one of our iMac G5s broke down we got a replacement which was the new 1.9ghz iMac with iSight. However when i image this machine, all i get is the apple for a few seconds and then the circle with the line through it.
When this problem happens, usually repairing permissions, resetting PRAM or those usual things tend to help, but not this time.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Since this is a new machine, just to rule out a problem with the computer itself, I'd try installing from the discs to see if you have trouble doing it that way.
