  • My iMac won't install updates after restart. Please help?

My iMac will restart to install updates, but after logging in again, nothing happens. Even if I click the Apple logo and go to "Software Update", it tells me it still has to install the updates and to restart again. Having to end up with nothing again. Help please? =(

Check /Library/Updates/ for folders with numbers. If there are any, open one and double-click the one with a dist extension. If that installs, then repeat with any others. If not, manually download the updates and then install them.

  • My iMac won't install updates.

When I click on Software update, Then install, I get an error screen. Here are some pictures. My iMac is the...
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)

Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network. If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If any proxy options are selected, deselect them. You don’t need to change the bypass or FTP settings. Click OK and then Apply. Test.
If no proxy is selected, or if deselecting it doesn't help, proceed as below.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IMac G5 iSight won't shut down, won't install updates

    Hi all,
My iMac G5 (iSight) is giving me some grief.
    First, some details:
    OSX 10.5.7
I have been trying to update this machine and have successfully updated a few things, such as iTunes, iLife, etc. Updates that don't require a restart seem to go just fine. I am unable to install updates to QT7, Safari because the installer hangs up while "Configuring Installation" and won't go any further, no matter how long you leave it.
This iMac also will not shut down. The finder icons disappear, the desktop image remains, and the grey spinning wheel goes on and it will simply not shut down until forced using the power button.
It is starting and functioning otherwise with no problems.
I have disconnected it from drives and and the network in case there was something on the network keeping it, but no luck. I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and the SMU, as well. No joy. Incidentally, my partner's MacBook Air is also having the exact same problem as this iMac (I posted as well in the MBA forums), but my own laptop, the one I'm using now (details below) is having no problem at all and all updates have taken.
Has anyone any suggestions about anything else I can try to clear this issue before I ring Applecare tomorrow?
    Many thanks!

    Hi Miriam,
I've just tried to run a Hardware Test but the disk is clearly from an older iMac I once had (pre-iSight) because it doesn't want to know about it. I have doubts about it being a logic board problem, however, because I'm having the same problems with a MacBook Air (but not my MacBook Pro) and it only started after a recent round of updates. Worrying, yes, but apart from not installing updates that require a restart or simply shutting down both machines seem to be performing perfectly. It's a bit confusing.
    Thanks!

  • 24" iMac won't install any 'large' Apple software updates from the internet

I am having a serious issue with my iMac and neither the people on the phone at Apple Care or the 'Geniuses' at the Genius Bar have been able to assist. So, maybe someone here can:
First - here is the background information about what happened and what I've done:
A few weeks ago when the new iTunes 10 came out I went to upgrade. The upgrade failed it said. So, I thought perhaps Apple was having issues with the new software or something. So, I thought - Ok, I'll give it a day or two.
I come back and try again from Apple.com - no luck. Hmmmm - well, I just happened to see my 'software update' icon pop up and there was iTunes. I thought "Great! Now I'm sure it'll install!" No luck.
So, I think - well, perhaps I've done something to corrupt my profile. So, I create a new profile and try again. No dice.
So now I'm really confused and figure - ok, let me try a partition and I'll try again. Still nothing.
Finally I figure - ok, something is wrong here. So, since nothing is working I backup my music and important files and wipe out the hard drive and start over. No luck. And, in fact - since I had gone back to 10.5.4 or whatever - software updates needed to install to get me back to 10.5.5. Those wouldn't install through software updates OR when downloaded from Apple.com - Smaller downloads like, flash, java, firefox, etc - all download and install without issue.
I decided to engage "Apple Care" and they call me at the time I specified and we begin to do some tests on the hardware and everything came back ok. We tried from Apple.com and software updates again - still won't install the software. Keeps coming back with "Software installation failed" something about the package installer was corrupted during downloading.
The guy at Apple care thinks perhaps its my network corrupting something. This begins to make a little sense and I think, maybe he's right. My wireless router isn't that great so, maybe I'll just go replace it. However, while I'm checking out I begin to think that maybe its NOT my wireless router - because I do have 2 other computers in my house who haven't had issues downloading anything. So, this is unlikely. But, I didn't like the wireless router anyway - so I went ahead with the purchase.
I get it home - set it up and try again. STILL not working. So, I make an Appointment at the "Genius Bar". I take it in - show them the screen shots of the errors and we get started. They try to do the install of either iTunes or the combo update on THEIR network - still won't work. The genius thinks I have a bad HD and takes the computer for 2 days to look at it.
I finally get to go pick it up - excited that I'll have my iMac (which I use for work) back and functioning again. I go pick it up and they decided that it wasn't my hard drive - but likely my RAM. They couldn't prove it was the RAM but figured since I bought the RAM after I bought the iMac that this must be the issue (even though it was up to exact Apple standards and was from Crucial). So, I think - well, while I have a blank slate I'll go ahead and install Snow Leopard. So, I pick up Snow Leopard and get new RAM too and go home to install.
I get the computer home, put the new RAM in, install snow leopard and get ready to work! After snow leopard install is done - it has some new updates it needs to install. And the update FAILS to install again. Oh, and they never replaced the HD.
So, I call Apple Care again - they have no clue. They suggest making an Apple Genius Bar appointment. So, I take it in again. They run diagnostics on it from their 'Triage' external hard drive and everything checks out. He says its probably the hard drive (same conclusion they came to the first time) and said that they would replace it.
I get the computer back - take it home. Everything is up to date. All the software updates were back in place including iTunes 10. However, I still want to test and see if I can download iTunes and/or do updates. So, I uninstall iTunes and download it again. Same problem. STILL won't install any large software downloads. But, again - Smaller downloads like, flash, java, firefox, etc - all download and install without issue. Just no core Apple updates or things like iTunes will download and install on my iMac.
I then took it to a friends house - set it up on his network - same issue.
    So to sum up:
I have re-imaged the hard drive several times
    I have replaced the ram
I have replaced my networking hardware (even though other machines on the network have no issues)
I have taken it in twice to the Genius Bar and they still haven't fixed it
The Problem followed the machine and exhibited the same issues in store as it did in my home (so we know the problems stays with the machine)
I have tried it on yet a 3rd network and the issue still exists
The people at the Genius Bar told me that If I still have issues then its with my network - even though its been proven it wasn't.
Its only larger downloads like Combo Updates and iTunes that won't install.
Any ideas? Sorry for the long post but its been quite an ordeal.

Yes, I have tried the updates directly from the Apple website and a different issue occurs. When I do that I get various different errors - the most common saying 'Codec overrun'. This has happened both before and after complete software OS reinstalls (Completely wiping the HD clean).
I did a video of my issue on my iPhone. I had to cut it and compress it to get it off my phone without syncing (because I can't sync it since I can't get iTunes installed now). So, its about a minute long if anyone wants to see it:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8leWwEoIeXI
And yes, we tried to repair permissions a couple times but didn't seem to have any effect on whether it would install these updates. Again, it's NOT all software downloads/installs. It seems to be limited to LARGER pieces of software. Example: Firefox, Flash, Java and Silverlight have all downloaded and installed without error on my iMac. Apple combo updates and iTunes won't install at all.

  • HT1338 imac OS X 10.6.8 won't install updates

Every time I try to install software updates, it immediately goes to the "restart your computer now" message before any updates are installed, and it restarts immediately before any updates get installed. I've tried it a dozen times and nothing is changing. I can't access itunes store because of this (as far as I know).
    Frustrating.

    T Walsh,
Use your install disc, power up and push the disc in while holding the C key, after it loads select your language then on the next screen, in the menu bar select Utilities>disk utilities, when DU opens select (highlight) your volume in the left side bar and run Repair Permissions, then run repair disk.
Then quit eject disc and logout, power off.
Restart and login, run software update, and see if it does the installs, if not try, the following as there might be some corruption occurring, especially if you doing these via WI-FI.
Run the software up date, write down the available updates (application, version) Then you can try to do one at a time by clicking  the the box to install update, after it completes then run software update again doing the one at a time thing, till there are no more up dates.
You can also go to the Apple Supprt site and down load the updates 1 at a time with the stand alone installer (this is where the write down the update name and Version comes)
Open Safari, Safari Preferences, general tab, on "Save downloaded file to:" select Destop, if it is not in the dropdown, select other, then select Desktop from the left side bar.
After a download completes click on the installer package and follow the promtps.
    Go here
    http://www.apple.com/support/snowleopard/
In the search window in the upper right corner type in the name, version, update, it should direct you to the link.
    Hope this helps

  • My Macbook Won't Install updates

I just purchased a Macbook Pro and it won't automatically update the software. It looks like it downloads the software but then just quits and never ends up installing.

It never automatically updates the software, updates do need to be preformed manually. Try logging out of the app store, restarting the computer, and logging back in. Then run your updates again

  • MacPro 10.6.8 won't install updates

    I need to update software.
I go to Check for Updates...
It runs. There are about a dozen. I click "Install All Updates".
A dialog appears "Your computer needs to be restarted to install", I click "Restart".
The purple sky window appears for about 2 minutes. No progress bar or anything. The computer then restarts.
I go to check for updates again.
    Nothing has updated.
    The cycle repeats.
(Also having the same issues with my MacBookPro).

    Update #2: Issue Resolved
    Note my first *Update*.
After some more troubleshoot/guess & check, I've been able to download all updates. Here is how I did it:
I repared my disk under "Applications/Disk Utilities". I do not know if this helped or not.
    Then "Check for Updates".
I selected & updated (one a first, then two, then multiple) updates that DO NOT have the "restart" icon (little circle with triangle inside). All these updates do no need a restart.
The remaining three updates required a restart. I selected all three, selected "Restart" when prompted, and the installation worked while the screen was that purple galactic sky. The computer then rebooted.
My conclusion is that you cannot do both non-restart and restart-neccessary updates at the same time (which may have a solution). This is an easy work around that requires no special fine-tuning to your software.

  • Apps won't install/update. Low memory.

For ipod touch 4g...using iOS 5.1--can someone tell me why my apps won't install all of a sudden? I thought it might be a memory problem since the diagnostic says my mem is low, but closing all apps in the dock didn't help. Neither did restarting or resetting the ipod.

It shows that I have 14.3GB free. What happens is that whenever I try to install an app it stays at the 'waiting' stage for a really long time. Then when I erase the app and try to reinstall it tells me that the app has already been downloaded and that I should check for available downloads. Installing the app from the computer works fine, but I don't understand why I can't do it from the ipod anymore.

There are two possibilities: You download is corrupted.
You can download the full 10.5.2 update here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1052comboupdate .html
    and install it.
The other possibility is that if you have installed the recent TimeMachine/Airport update it probably won't instal anyway. There are many threads here about it. You should look them over.

  • InDesign CS6 won't install/update Adobe Exchange panel

After installing and updating exchange manager 6.0.2.40 when I go to indesign exchange panel it says update is available, click that, it downloads and says update successful, restart indesign to take effect. When it installs it switches to extension manager and says update conflicts with other version install yes or no? Click yes, says succesfull and restart indesign, I restart indesign and same thing happens again and again.
Photoshop and illustrator (CS6) panels work just fine. It's indesign that doesnt work.
    Mac OS 10.7
Tried updating, reinstalling exchange manager, adobe application manager is 6.2.112.0,
tried several times on indesign and it just keeps going through the same update/restart loop.

    Hi SpooCobraVenom,
You can try to uninstall "exchange panel", and download and install it again from https://www.adobeexchange.com/api/AdobeExchange.zxp.

my itunes won't instal the update errors saying cannot find itunes.msi

    Hi, kdub5.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you can not update iTunes due to a .msi error.  I would recommend uninstalling iTunes and all of it's components as outlined in the first article below.  For any component that gives you the .msi error, go through the steps in the second article below.
Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" alert appears when you remove Apple software in Windows
    Cheers,
