IMacs can boot Linux or Windows from usb stick

iMacs 21' can boot Linux or Windows from usb stick? from Firewire 400 or 800 hdd/ssd? from USB HDD/SSD?
May boot fromCD/DVD/DVDDL in internal DVD DRIVE, too?
Exist Blu-ray drives able connect on Thunderbolt slot on iMac 21'?

Here is the memo of the steps I followed. Hope this helps.

    Yes,
Disconnect everything hooked up to the PC except the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Then use this method to flash the BIOS.  It is the safest way to go.
USB Device BIOS Flashing in DOS
DOS Flash  (DOSFlash.exe, FlshUefi.cpu) is the DOS-compatible System BIOS flash utility that can be used from a DOS bootable storage device (where "DOS" refers to any of a number of compatible operating systems such as FreeDOS, MS-DOS or DR-DOS). FlshUefi.cpu is the required driver for DOSFlash.exe. To flash the System BIOS from a bootable USB storage device, you will need to copy the contents of the DOS Flash folder to the USB device, boot the PC from the USB device, and execute the DOSFlash application. To see a more complete description of the DOS flash utilities, view DOSFlash.txt located in the DOS Flash folder. This folder also contains the required binary image of the BIOS.  The binary image file is named xxx_MMmm.bin where "xxx" is the BIOS family, "MM" is the major version number, and "mm" is the minor version number.  This file can be copied to the root directory of any USB removable medium for use with the F10 setup "Flash System ROM" option

The links on this post don't work. I copied the section from the BIOS flashing instructions for the specific section you need.

Hmm, when you mean "bootable" are you meaning booting a operating system from the USB to run the computer with?
Because that's what "booting" means, not mounting, which is what I think you mean.
I say this is because you mentioned a PC, and a generic PC can't normally boot from a USB with OS X installed without a LOT of extra help of the hacking/breaking software agreement kind which is beyond the capability of most.
If you mean your USB thumb drive is not mounting or showing up on the computer to trade files, then please tell us how you formatted the USB or if you didn't or not and it's volume size.
Also if it does have OS X on it, what version and where did you install it from, because it might be lacking the hardware drivers for the other Mac.

Please verify that the programs (Ubuntu, Mint, Boot-Repair, etc.) you are attempting to use, support the Atheros AR8161L gigabit ethernet controller natively. Not all operating systems and software programs support every network device and/or configuration otut of the box. Many times, specific drivers must be loaded or injected into the OS for a device to function properly.

  • Satellite P855-34K can't boot in CSM mode from USB or ODD

Hi everyone, first time here for me.
I recently bought a Satellite P855-34K laptop, with UEFI, and I'm finding impossible to boot with UEFI set into CSM mode when using USB sticks or CDs/DVDs.
And yes, I obviously DID disable Secure Boot and switched to CSM boot in UEFI's setup.
Fast boot has always been disabled, too.
I tried to toggle USB3.0/2.0 and the activation of USB in sleep mode, no way.
Plus, that would make a difference for USB only, as I said optical media don't boot either.
All medias (USB sticks and optical) work flawlessly on other computers, and don't support UEFI (so CSM booting is a must for me). I even tried two USB sticks on another, fairly recent, Toshiba laptop of a friend of mine (can't remember the model right now), and CSM boot worked flawlessly on that (I obviously needed to toggle the Secure Boot and UEFI/CSM boot options).
Do note that USB sticks set up for UEFI boot DO work. In fact I have two OSes on my HDD, both set to boot via UEFI, and I installed the second OS with a UEFI stick.
One more interesting fact: UEFI setup (F2 at boot) displays USB sticks make and model correctly. UEFI boot menu (F12 at boot) DOESN'T do that in CSM mode, but DOES in UEFI mode (obviously sticks won't boot in UEFI).
I tried to search both on this forum and on Google, and I wasn't able to find an answer.
Talking with Toshiba webform and phone support (and after going with them through every single UEFI/BIOS option and finding everything fine), they suggested to send the laptop to one of their service centers near me to better analyze the problem.
But since this looks like a potential UEFI bug to me on my peculiar model, sending the laptop to them would be of little use: they would likely acknowledge the error in UEFI, but until Toshiba releases an update, nothing could be done; plus, I would have to go through the hassle of sending my laptop to another town and be without it for some days (the nearest service center is not quite near to my town).
By the way, I have the latest BIOS (UEFI actually) version: 6.70.
Well, congrats for reading all this :), sometimes I'm too verbose!
    Now the questions:
    - Does anyone with the same model have this problem?
    - To Toshiba forum personnel reading this: if it's a problem affecting this model, is Toshiba aware of the issue and/or doing something about it?
    - Are there any workarounds other than using/setting up UEFI-enabled boot media? Yes, I know UEFI is the long-term solution and eventually every OS will support it, but right now not every OS does and I NEED to boot from other media for various reasons.
    Thanks in advance!

    > +Firstly it's worth noting that it is possible to to disable secure boot in the 6.70 BIOS. However this option is only available when the user password is not set in the security menu. After enabling or disabling the password a reboot is required to make the secure boot enable/disable option either available or unavailable.+
    > +...+
    > +I selected the 'reset to factory defaults' option on the exit menu. The machine was then able to boot from USB and DVD. The boot order was also respected.+
Hi everyone, sorry for disappearing here, was busy... and couldn't carry on all the tests I wanted.
However, the good news is that what *michael_toshiba_forum* found apparently works for me, too!
*I loaded the setup defaults from the BIOS (UEFI) setup, and now it appers I can finally boot both CSM and UEFI media!*
Great find michael, thank you! By the way, USB sticks make and models now DO appear in the F12 menu while in CSM!
*EDIT:* of course, thanks to Tonny too, for pointing out the link to the other thread!
Didn't test all my media thoroughly, though. I'll post more accurate results as soon as I can.
However, while it looks like we have the solution to the problem, we still don't know the cause, and I feel this deserves to be investigated more.
Let me explain my point: I checked (and double-checked on the phone with a Toshiba tech) every +single+ UEFI setup option, and couldn't find anything wrong, as I said in my original post. One interesting UEFI feature is that it introduces "UEFI variables" (as I read online), and as far as I understand there is +not+ a way to interact with them in UEFI setup (at least not on my PC!). If the problem was a wrongly set UEFI variable, maybe doing a "load default" did reset both UEFI parameters +and+ variables.
And since UEFI variables are intended to be modified by programs too (unlike legacy BIOS parameters stored in CMOS), I think we may have some scenarios where programs could potentially trigger the problem again. *michael_toshiba_forum* said in his other thread that his problem was triggered after upgrading to Win8.1. Maybe in my case this is due to the second OS I installed (Kubuntu 13.04) just after buying my laptop.
Anyway, I'll do some tests again and do some research and report my findings.
IMHO, if my theory is right, Toshiba should create a README for this, the solution to this problem looks not so obvious (nor me neither Toshiba support thought about it).

  • How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1

How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1 ?
My Superdrive is far from super anymore, So I managed to make an extern drive with both Snow Leopard Partition, Lion Partition (Since I thought Boot Camp 4,1 would bypass my problem), and Time Machine partition, Since I got 1. USB drive that works.
    - My general issue is that Boot camp Refuse to see the USB drive - (Many "how to"´s though show how they install windows perfectly through the USB port, but they use airbooks!, and somehow the Macbook will not ?)
I fix that issue with >> rEFIt <<, that suddenly makes it possible for the Mac to see the USB drive, and partitions.
Which was very strange since I could use an extern HD with the whole installation to start up wipe the whole disk, and then use my extern drive with partitions to install Snow Leopard and get everything as before with timemachine. Very smart with timemachine, but very lucky that I have a extern drive that runs the whole system and that I made the partitionsdrive before. DVD-drives are the past!
Point: So the original system could see the Snow Leopard installation USB disk, but boot camp cannot find the USB drive ?????????
After rEFIt I booted and then I got this error:
    Starting bootmgr.efi
    Error: Unsupported while loading bootmgr.efi
I read it could be a problem with the Windows software, so I purchased an extern DVD drive, Used Disk Utility to make an image (.DMG), then used another program to convert the .dmg to .ISO.
Then downloaded a trialversion of vmWare fusion, and installed windows from the iso. Everything worked brilliant, except and that is why I want to use boot camp, Running windows in another program while running the mac system is a little hacky and slow.
Point: Nothing is wrong with the windows software, and windows runs fine.
I then downloaded the Windows DVD / USB Tool, reformatted a USB drive as Master Boot Partition, MS-Dos Fat partition, then after lots of struggling got Vmware, windows to recognise the USB drive. And installed the windows software on the USB drive, as all the walkthroughs recommend.
Then I tried for "fun"! to just install windows form the extern USB drive, and with rEFIt it will see the drive and start to do something, but then when it starts to boot, the screen just turns into black and nothing happens, and you can see the drive does NOTHING. (I think it is because I only have 1 USB drive and the Extern DVD drive does not get enough power, but again the mac refuse to see the USB drive unless it is a Snow Leopard installation USB-drive!
Well trying to install Windows Ultimate 64 Bit, which worked great in vmware, because that program installed from the .ISO file that I had on the desktop, but trying with Boot Camp did not get anywhere, what kind of **** program is this boot camp anyway!?, but then I try the new USB disk with windows made from windows, thorugh rEFIt, it sees the disk and then starts and then I get this ERROR:
    rEFIt - Booting Legacy OS
    Starting legacy loader
    Using load option ´USB´
Error: Not found returned from legacy loader
    Error: Not found from LocateDevicePath
    (x 9 times)
Error: Load Error while (re)opening our installation volume
The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple´s firmware for legacy OS booting
(Hey Apple please send out a updated firmware that fix this issue?!)
So how do I do it ? - or is the only option to fix the partition running the system from the extern disk. Format the whole drive in 2 from the "bottom" and install windows and then afterwards install Mac on the other partition ?  Or just run windows on the mac and forget about mac software ? What a stupid solution...

There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.
This is 5 page thread, so a little more 'meat' to it:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3410900?start=60&tstart=0
And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a  mac-model device ID string that specifies yes.  An unnecessary hurdle.

  • Can't copy to or from usb

I have a mac pro with Mountain Lion.
I cannot copy to or from USB sticks. It might get as far as 8.4mb then freeze and often eventually stops the whole system from operating.
I cannot print via usb. A job will begin to print but a print connection error will soon occur.
I also have a 2tb Time Capsule. I can save a photoshop or illustrator file to it maybe once but any attempts to save freezes then slowly stops the entire computer from working and I have to force close by holding the power button.
It has been like this from new. I have a 27" imac and macbook pro that have none of these problems so I know it isn't the usb, printer or time capsule.
I also get the spinning colourful "wheel of wait" when I enter my password and press enter when first booting up, is this normal?
I have tried every solution I can find online.
    The operating system is 10.8.2
I have tried smc reset, verify disk, verify disk permissions, repair disk permissions etc

    Did you try:

I can't open pages files from USB and iCloud due to : "The necessary file index.xml is missing". Original file is written on iMac (2014) and saved to an USB stick and then transferred till macBook Pro (2009, Yosemite) for editing. Then I shared the files by iCloud but I am not able to open them on iMac again. Niether can I use the USB stick to transfer the edited files back. I'm running Pages '09 4,1 (923) on the macBook and Pges 5.5.2 (2120) on the iMac.
    Håkan

Pages 5.5.2 is extremely incompatible with even other Macs let alone the vast majority of PC and MsWord users out there, so not a good idea to leap into the fire with both eyes shut.
After having done that to the first Pages 5 files, Apple has repeatedly done it to even the most minor point updates. Apple can't even anticipate its own erratic changes let alone what everyone else needs doing.

  • IMac only boots in to Windows

    Hi
My feonca got a copy of windows today and wanted me to install it for her. I created the partition using bootcamp setup the inserted the windows cd and rebooted. Competed the installation. Then I inserted the Leopard cd and ran the setup for the drivers. Some of the drivers would not install. It was then that I discovered the copy of windows is 64-bit and I cant get leopard back. The iMac only boots in to windows. What can I do to fix this.
    thanks Dan

Holding down the option (or alt)-key during booting--as soon as you hear the apple chime--doesn't work?

  • Boot from USB-stick on old thinkpad?

    Hi,
I have an old Thinkpad 600E. It runs arch linux (and does this really fine), but I just want to try something new...
The thinkpad does not support booting from USB. I wonder if it is possible to boot a linux-distro on an usb-stick (like puppy) using GRUB on the thinkpad's hard drive - maybe someone has done this before or hasn an idea...?
    pseb

For older hardware like yours, I would give SliTaz a shot (http://www.slitaz.org/en). It's very small (25MB) and looks very promising. It has had good reviews on linux.com and distrowatch (see http://www.linux.com/feature/140573).
