Images Appear Different When Viewed in Photoshop CS4 vs. LR 2.7

Hello, I hope someone on this forum can help.
I have a series of high quality images that are catalogued using Lightroom 2.7.  Many were edited using Photoshop while others were edited in the "Develop" module of Lightroom.  All of the images look exceptional in both Lightroom and Brdige.  However, when I open some of the images in PS, either directly from Bridge or by using the "Edit in" command from Lightroom, they appear washed out and dull -- very different and much worse.  I always use the setting, "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments."  The problem pertains to all images regardless of file format (JPEG, DNG, NEF, etc.) and regardless of whether they are opened from LR, Bridge or directly from the image using the "Open with" command in Windows.
This happens on two completely different set of monitors.  At work I have a Dell 2208 WFPt UltraSharp monitor, and at home a dual monitor setup with an Asus VE278Q and an LG flat screen (all are flat screen, high quality monitors).  I have a Lenovo X201s with 8gb of RAM and a high-speed i7 processor running Windows 7, 64-bit.  All of my Adobe products are up-to-date.  Windows Color Management shows all displays as "Generic PnP Monitor - Intel HD Graphics," and the Advanced mode of Intel's HD Graphics correctly identifies each monitor being used.  The problem is identical regardless of which monitor is being used and it does not seem to make any difference as to which color profile is associated with the monitor (I have two profiles added -- Adobe RGB (1998) (the default) and sRGB IEC61966-2.1).
Specifically, if I double-click on a particular TIF image in Bridge (where the preview looks great), it then triggers Camera Raw 5.7 - TIF, where again the image looks terrific.  The settings applied by Camera Raw are "ProPhotoRGB; 16 bit; 3607 by 2420 (8.7MP); 300 ppi" (although changing these settings makes no difference whatever when the image is subsequently opened in Photoshop).  When the image is opened in Photoshop it looks terrible -- dull and washed out.  I encounter the exact same problem when using my dual monitor setup at home, so I don't think monitor calibrations are the cause.
Strangely, I don't think this problem existed a couple of months ago.  I've been busy on a project and haven't used Photoshop since the end of this past July (of 2011).  As I recall, this problem did not exist then, so I'm wondering if a setting in Photoshop inadvertently got altered since then.
I have the following key settings in Photoshop's "Color Settings":
Working Spaces: RGB -- ProPhoto RGB
Color Management Policies -- Preserve Embedded Profiles
Conversion Options -- Adobe (ACE)
I have the following key settings in Lightroom's "Preferences / External Editing":
Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4
File Format -- PSD; Color Space ProPhoto RGB, 16-bits, 300 dpi
File Format -- TIFF; Color Space ProPhoto RGB, 16-bits, 300 dpi
I have tried and tried to figure this out, to no avail.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, I think you're right.
Any suggestions for a cheap and easy way to calibrate my monitors?

  • TIFF & JPEG renders of RAW files appear different when viewed in Bridge

I am working with the demo of Photoshop CS6, with ACR 7.1. CS6 System Info will appear at the bottom of this post. Summary: AMD Phenom II x6 1090T, 16GB RAM, Win7-64bit, nVidia GTX 460 video w/1GB RAM, approx. 2.5 TB free space on multiple internal physical drives, Canon 50D, CR2 files. I have a camera profile generated through Profile Editor, and the monitor is calibrated with i-1 Match.
I have been practicing with the new Basic Panel controls (Process 2012). When I felt that I was getting the hang of them I started saving JPEG and TIFF files and noticed differences between what appears in Bridge and ACR. I worked on this for some time and searched out some other discussions in the Forum which seemed to talk about similar results. I have now tried Image Processor via Bridge, Save Image in ACR, and Open>Save manually in PS CS6. By whatever route, the TIFFs and JPEGs are different (lighter in the following examples, but this is not always the case), while PSD saves seem to be close, but not identical to the CR2 when viewed in Bridge or Photoshop. Here is a screen capture of Bridge thumbnails which show the differences.
I hope the labels come through legibly. The two images on the second row are CR2 and PSD respectively. What is really odd to me is that when I resaved the PSD file as a TIFF, the same sort of difference shows up in the TIFF. (See _MG_7960_via_PSD.tif above.) I have uploaded the CR2, its XMP, a TIFF and a JPEG on Sendspace (107 MB). I did this earlier in my experiments and regret that the file naming is not as informative as might be.

I have run a few other ACR adjusted CR2 images through Image Processor and seen a variety of differences between the rendered files and the RAW versions. The differences seem to be in Exposure and Contrast. Most of these looked somewhat darker, unlike the examples above.
I will happily provide any other information on request. Thanks!

Thanks very much for that lead, NormanPCN. I do have Auto Tone checked, though the rendered files in the example above do not have XMP sidecars. I will try unchecking Auto Tone even so, and post back when I see what happens.
    Thanks again,
    Kieren
EDIT: Bingo! I took Auto Tone off in ACR Preferences (in Bridge) and the non-RAW files immediately regenerated thumbs and previews. They now are indistinguishable from the PSD. There is still the very slight difference which I mentioned between the PSD and the CR2. While that seems odd, it is small enough to be relatively trivial.
    Many thanks!

Stationary credated in Mail does not appear properly when viewed in Outlook, is there around this? Or, can I export (as a PDF) the email drafted in Mail with stationary that does not have the meail info on top of the page . Thanks so much for your help.

No real solution to problem 1, stationary tends to look different depending on the client, as for 2 Mail does not export to pdf but can print to pdf, however you still get the mail headers.

  • TableView LINEEDIT works differently when viewed through Portal

I have a simple table with a few columns of data that I display and allow the user to change a row using the selectionMode = "lineedit".  The columns are all controlled using htmlb tableViewColumns.
When I test my application from the WebAs the table looks fine.  If a user selects a row they can see the entire amount of text that appears in a column they want to change
However, when the BSP comes up in our SAP portal and the user selects a row only the first 20 (or so) characters can be seen and the user must use the arrows keys to get to the part of the text they wish to change.  Is this a setting somewhere?

For the <htmlb:inputField> look at attributes maxlength, size and width.
<b>width:</b> Determines the text width for the input field. We recommend that you use the size attribute instead of width.
<b>size:</b> Determines the size of the input field.
<b>maxLength:</b> Maximum length of the user input.
I must admit that this documentation is not tell me enough. Will ask on Monday about this.
As for your remark "works differently when viewed through Portal": You keep in mind that once a BSP application is running with the portal, all stylesheets (*.CSS) files are loaded from the portal server, and not the webAS.
Now it could happen that you are running an EP and an older (or incompatible) patch level than your BSP stylesheets are at the moment. For EP6, starting from what I remember at SP11, there is planned a technique to install the latest stylesheets from service market place. You ask about this via OSS, queue EP-PIN-?-STY (something like this).

  • Images appear faded when exporting to pdf

Hello, I have .png images in my document; and regardless of the blend space I choose, or pdf export settings, the images appear faded when I export to pdf. I noticed that when I print the file as a pdf, the colors don't change, it only happens when I export, so I'm assuming it's related to pdf export settings? any help would be appreciated. another thing that might be relevant; in the document, when it's just a single image on the page, it doesn't appear faded in the exported pdf. but when there are several images together, overlapping on the page, fading occurs. also, if I select compatibility as acrobat 4, images are not faded in the pdf, although they do appear lower quality. but i can't set compatibility at 4 because i have several movie files and hyperlinks embedded, which 4 doesn't allow. hope i've made sense, i'm new to indesign, using CS3.

Hi Peter, I changed the colorspace in acrobat to the same as indesign, sRGB... + US web coated v2.. then I exported again, but still have faded text in text boxes as well as faded images (.png files). I notice when i zoom in and out quickly, the images flicker a bit and look how they should but when I stop they stay faded. I'm just curious if anyone were to place a .png image in their indesign + export to pdf, whether they'd get the same result.
as far as the monitor goes, to be honest, im not sure if it's calibrated. and i feel bad asking what that means

  • Images in ACR are softer than when viewed in Photoshop?

    Greetings,
I'm finding that when I view a RAW image in ACR 4.1 that the image does not appear as sharp as when I open the image from ACR into Photoshop and view it in Photoshop. I open my RAW files from ACR into Photoshop as PSD files. The image as viewed in Photoshop looks sharper at values less than 100%. Here's a screen grab of the same image (Photoshop on the left, ACR on the right), side by side at the exact same viewing size (23.1%), and the Photoshop image has more sharpness and clarity to it. It's minor, but noticeable in the leaves and bricks and it gives the ACR image an overall soft feeling.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1jidvrPRXgXSfq8c5IHonNL13oeEI
Do the programs handle interpolation diferrently when viewing images at less than 100%? Or, do RAW and PS files inherently display differently when not viewed at 100%? When both are viewed at 100%, they match. This isn't a major deal breaker -- but the lack of clarity at smaller viewing sizes in ACR is unfortunate, since I rarely view images in ACR at 100% size when I'm reviewing images and images that I think are soft are, in fact, not.
The disparity seems more pronounced with images in portrait orientation.
    I'm using a Mac Pro, Radeon X1900, 23" ACD. Canon 5d images.
Anyone experience similar? I love ACR, but wondering if someone can shed some light on this.

Thanks for the clarification now -- it makes sense. I knew ACR only showed the effects of sharpening at 100%, but had forgotten to take into account Photoshop shows the effects of sharpening at all sizes, including under 100%

  • Why does my high res photoshop image appear blurry when placed in InDesign and Exported as PDF?

    Hi there,
I have a problem I've been trying to solve for days but just can't find the answer anywhere on the internet.
I have a large, good quality photoshop file (2268 x 979 pixels, resolution 300 pixels per inch). When I place it into InDesign, the image appears OK (I've changed my display settings to HIGH) - I then resize it in InDesign to 10% and the file still looks great! Then, when I export it as PDF (high quality print) it looks blurry.
Does anybody know why? The strangest thing is, I've placed other photoshop images in the same InDesign file and they look crystal clear. It is just this one I am having trouble with. I've saved it in the same folder as the other pictures, I've tried placing it as psd. , jpg. , photoshop pdf, png. everything...
The image looks great in both photoshop and indesign, only when exported as pdf it looks awful.
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
    Many thanks in advance!
    Weronika

It's probably the extreme reduction -- you're throwing away 90% of the image pixels and interpolating, and then using jpeg compression on top.

  • HT2946 Why is the contrast of my images totally different when processed and then opened in CS4?  Does anybody else have this issue?

Why does the contrast in my images processed in Aperture look markedly different when opened in CS4?  The images look fab on the screen in Aperture - even if these are then opened in CS4 from Aperture they look different  - much flatter.  This is a new issue.  I am a wedding photographer and an album processed in Aperture has been sent back by my wedding album printer saying the images all lack contrast!  Can anybody shed any light on this!  I have checked colour spacing etc!

    I Also have this problem!!
In my situation, the screen simply started exhibiting the same symptoms a few weeks ago (early February) for no apparent reason.  At first I thought the screen was dead, but discovered the heat solution by accident.  Now I turn it on and keep it from going to sleep until I go to bed.  Thank goodness the battery is still awesome on this thing.
I bought it new and still has the original screen, I keep it at home (never below 62 degrees).  Coincidentally, this happened a day or two after the expiration of the warranty!!  Any help figuring this one out would be eternally appreciated.

  • After editing camera raw and export as jpeg, image becomes overexposed when view on light room..please advise.

need some help here. don't know if i can describe this accurately.
i was using lightroom previously. edit my raw file and then export in jpeg. everything appear normal as what i wanted.
recently i got cs4 and started using bridge. now after i edit my photo in lightroom and export, the view of the jpeg file appears overexpose(exposure was increase) and when view on adobe bridge same problem. but if i open photoshop and use my workspace colour setting everything is ok. when i see my picture on iphoto it is normal as per i have edited. i just don't know what setting i have touch that cause my viewing of edited photo on lightroom and bridge goes overexpose. on bridge, thumbnail ok but preview bad...
for the record: i just install CS4 and snow leopard recently. before this i have no problems with LR. I'm also not sure if i have accidentally change any settings.
i shoot with a 5D mark 2 and use the raw file for edit.
    will appreciate any advise. Thanks

Is it possibe to return to a RAW image and edit it once I've exported it to another location as jpeg?
    Yes
I've edited and exported an image to a different folder on my desktop. I've realised I still need to do some work on it
but when I try and open it again in Lightroom ( I see it in Library)  I get a mesaage saying file not found...Please help
We're going to need a lot more details aobut exactly (EXACTLY) the steps you follow after you do the export, because normally I would say this is one of the easiest things possible in Lightroom. Are any files moved or renamed or disks unplugged in between the time of export and the time when you try to edit again?

  • Image appears different in Library and Develop modes?

I have an image that appears different depending on whether it is in the Library Module or the Develop Module. Only this one image does this. The develop module version is the one I want to work on in Photoshop. However, when I click on "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3" the resulting tiff that opens in PS has an appearance that matches that of the Library module version of the image. It makes no difference whether I click on "Edit in PS CS3" from the Library or Develop module, the tiff always matches the Library Module version of the raw file.
Any ideas what might be causing this?
    Thanks.
    J.

How are you calibrating your monitor? The only real difference between the Library and develop module is that the Library module shows a preview that is generally stored in the adobeRGB color space. The Develop module uses a color space based on prophotoRGB primaries and can encompass any color your camera can capture. It is possible that your green falls outside of adobeRGB and gets clipped in the library preview, while in the develop module it shows them. This is only possible to see if you have a wide gamut monitor, or when your calibration software generates a perceptual rendering intent. If you export and you do not use the prophotoRGB color space, you will loose these colors.

  • Image Displays Differently in PS and Br CS4

I have a gs tif file that I converted to cmyk. In PS the cmyk version looks virtually identical on screen to the gs version although when you hold the eyedropper over the image, cyan displays as a higher percentage than m or y, with k lowest in both the cmyk conversion and the grayscale original...what do I have set wrong!  In Bridge the cmyk version clearly shows a cyan cast.
Color settings are synchronized in CS4.
Can anyone tell me why: 1, the images are displaying differently, and, 2. using Convert To Profile, cymk, Working CMYK US Sheetfed Coated v2, image appears to have a distince cyan cast? And why, for that matter, is the GS image showing uneven cmyk percentages?
    Thanks in advance
    J

    the images are displaying differently
Have you proofing enabled in both of them? Even if the profiles match otehrwise, that option still has to be toggled.
image appears to have a distince cyan cast?
Well, if you print CMYK, you want "rich black", which means that it needs to be underprinted with another color to not look like a dull gray. Only spot black/ text black does not require that. That's not the point here, though. It's really due to the conversion being done wrong. If you really want to retain the blacks as a pure channel, use the method described. Also, if you can, in the future simply start out in CMYK to avoid these issues.

  • How do I make a textured image appear only when the button is selected?

I am trying to create a DVD menu that has a textured image (bulletholes) appear only when a button highlighted (ie, about to be selected).
The only think I can work out is how to make the button appear as a sub-picture that has a solid colour appear on top of it when selected.
In summary, here is what i am trying to achieve:
1- there are 5 DVD menu items
2 - the user can select any of those items
3- as they move between each item, I want a I want a multi-coloured (textured) image to appear.
I can not work this out.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.
    Richard.

Thanks for this.  This is most surprising to hear!
I have been using DVD Studio Pro for years and we have been able to do add textured or multicoloured buttons.
Am I correct in understanding that in Encore, if a menu has 6 options, I need to create 6 different menus and import them all and use the auto activate state to make this work?
Is there a workaround for making this work on a computer?

  • Version Set is not created when editing with Photoshop CS4?

Last week I was working in PSE7 and opening files into PS CS4 for editing. I open the files by clicking the Open with link and choose Photoshop. I edited several dozen photos and when I closed them from PS CS4 Version Sets were created in PSE7 like they should be. At some point that stopped happening. Now when I do as before and open the files into PS CS4, edit them, and then close them the Version Set is not being created in PSE7. I look in the folder containing the files and the file has a new modified date but it still has the same file name instead of being saved with the - edited name as before. Does anyone know why the version sets are no longer being created when editing with PS CS4? I can edit the files with the PSE7 editor and the version sets are created as they should be. Thanks!

Okay so tha there is no misunderstanding here is exactly what I'm doing. From the PSE7 Organizer I select a photo (file name Tetons & Jenny Lake 026.jpg) and click the Fix tab. I then click More Options and select Photoshop. The photo opens in into PS CS4. I make my edits click the x on the tab to close the image and I'm asked "Save changes to the Adobe Photoshop document "Tetons & Jenny Lake 026_edited-1.jpg" before closing?" I click Yes then click OK to save the image at maximum quality. I go back to the PSE 7 Organizer and there is no version set. I check the folder the original image was in and see the original file Tetons & Jenny Lake 026.jpg with a new modified date and time. I can even choose Save As from PS CS4 and it asks me if I want to overwrite Tetons & Jenny Lake 026_edited-1.jpg and I select Yes, but I get the exact same results. Thanks!
