Images look too light on new monitor

Hi,
I hope you can help me. I've been working in CS5.5 on two Dell desktops, using two Dell Ultrasharp monitors. The color was consistent on both. I created files on the newest of the two computers, viewing them on the Ultrasharp 2311 monitor. The files were used to produce both printed and digital books, and everything looked good. Note - I'm not a graphic designer. I never calibrated the monitors or made any adjustments to the settings, either in the system display or in PS.
I just retired the oldest computer and bought a new Dell computer, along with the Ultrasharp 2711 monitor, which has excellent reviews. The files that look fine on my two-year old computer/monitor are too washed out on the new monitor. Dell couldn't figure out the problem and sent me a new monitor, which didn't change anything. The technician at Adobe could see the problem and we played with the settings, but couldn't fix it. If I go to Proof Setup/Monitor RGB it gets closer, but it's still too light. I never made this adjustment on the older monitor.
I KNOW the files produced on the older monitor work, because I've seen the finished printed and digital books. Manipulating the file on the new system isn't the answer. There must be some setting that needs to be adjusted, but neither Dell nor Adobe can help me.
By the way, my older monitor looks fine connected to the new computer, so it's not a computer issue.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks so much,
Chris

Thanks Peter & Sid. I appreciate the advice, but it doesn't match our experience over 12 years of designing web applications so I'm having trouble understanding what's different, can I ask for any more advice you might have?
If we calibrate the monitor using the recommended tools, will Photoshop images look 2-3 f-stops brighter (i.e. as they should look) and will images in all other apps (which look fine now, have always looked fine) look 2-3 f-stops too bright? Or would we be changing JUST the way Photoshop sees the images?
Through probably a dozen different previous CRT and LCD monitors, we've never calibrated anything. Even on our immediately-previous Samsung 213T monitor, images appear pretty much the same in Photoshop as they do in all other places. That includes published web sites viewed with several popular browsers and viewed on literally hundreds of different systems inside and outside of our office.
The previous monitor was being used with exactly the same software and hardware as the new one. The only thing that's changed is the monitor.
Peter asks about brightness or white point luminance. I haven't used any tool to determine that. The monitor is set to 50% brightness, for whatever that's worth, but I can tell you that it is substantially BRIGHTER on white than the previous monitor. The previous Samsung monitor is being run side-by-side with the new one, and it looks quite dull and yellow beside the new one (and we thought it was a great monitor!) The new 30" Samsung has MUCH whiter whites. Does that help even a little?
Thanks for any further advice.

  • What looks good in Bridge, Lightroom & Safari, looks too light in CS4

When I get things just the way I want them in Lightroom, and export them, when I open them up in Photoshop CS4, they look way too light and even undersaturated. The same image looks the same in Safari, LIghtroom and Bridge, but not CS4.   CS4 is set to sRGB and all the images are sRGB images.
Question: why? And what do I need to do so that images look the same in all applications?
I am on a 27" iMac running all the latest software.  I have calibrated my monitor and it is set at about 140 cdm2

try exporting from lightroom with AdobeRGB (1998) color space and in photoshop at color settings / working space / rgb choose also AdobeRGB (1998).

  • CS5 prints too light using new Mac, perfect from older Mac?

Images edited w. Photoshop CS5 (v. 12.03) on a Mac running OS 10.6.8 print perfectly on my Epson Stylus Pro 3880. But the same files printed from a newer Mac running OS 10.7.4 and Photoshop CS5 (v12.1) print too light. Exact same printer settings in PS being used, same printer driver version (reinstalled to make sure not a bad driver), using the same .icc paper profile (also reinstalled), and using same batch of paper printed at same time.
Where do I start in determining the problem? Epson confirms driver is compatible. Everything else on the new system with PS works great. Gallery show in three weeks, must figure this out quick. Thanks.

Ps update is 12.0.4 and 12.1, but you are probably missing something, by posting screenshots someone may be able to spot the problem
are you sure which one is actually wrong
do they display identical in both OSes
are both versions of Ps using the same embedded profile, did you confirm that

  • Sharpened image looks wrong on my NEC monitor while absolutely fine in MacBookPro retina

    Hi all,
I use Photoshop CC. Today I came across this image on my NEC where I sharpened and added a bit clarity image looks just to find that image looks very wrong in photoshop but OK in ACR. Then I uploaded same image with same settings on my MAc Pro Retina however image looked perfectly fine in both ACR and photoshop. Then I cranked up clarity to a max and sharpening in ACR to a max too 115 1.0 25 0 image remained fine viewing on both ACR and photoshop on Mac.
    Here is upload:http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/...psqqtqidhi.jpg
I am using NEC Multisync PA241W w. Calibrated a week ago.
    Thanks

    Hi Melissa,
Let me split in sections our conversation:
"The raw file, using your numbers, top large, Photoshop, bottom, ACR. The smaller image on the right is the same thing only applied to the jpg version from the website you liked to. Super grainy in the jpg because the file is sooooo much smaller than the original. All displayed at 100%."  For the purpose of this experiment only RAW file participates in ACR.  To capture our experiment we use screenshot function.
"so, what is different about your NEC and Mac images you originally posted... was it the exact same file at the exact same size?  Or was it 2 different images on different machines?" exact same file exact same resolution exact same filter applied in ACR. On Mac both ACR and in photoshop image displayed fine. On NEC ACR is fine however photoshop looks bad nasty.
"So... if you did everything to the raw file at it's original size it should be OK. If you made a smaller version and then did the ACR stuff... it's going to look like crap. In order to display this ginormous image you had to resize it at some point to get it into the screen shots. I think that is where the issue is..." How do you normally view image in photoshop? The way I do i zoom out to my likening for instance this image was fine to view at 17-25% on my monitor and Mac too. Or I simply click on "fit to screen" option at it fits just fine. However image is view at 28.36% out of full 100%. If you choose to view at 100% you would get zoom like you have here in your screenshot. So to display it like I do just click fit to screen and that will do.

  • Imported JPEG images are too light

Imported JPEG images appear lighter/brighter than the scanned image.
How can I make JPEG images appear with the correct lightness/brightness so they look like the actual book or magazine from which they were scanned?
Using Apple's "Preview" to look at a JPEG- everything looks fine. But when a JPEG is imported into Motion 4.0.3 (and/or Final Cut Pro 7.0.3), the image appears lighter/brighter, as if it's washed out. To see if this is just the way a JPEG appears in Motion and not how the finished product will be, I exported a Motion project with one or more JPEGs as a QuickTime movie. The QuickTime movie does not bring the JPEG image(s) back to the "correct" lightness/brightness as the scanned image.
    Settings used:
JPEG image, using a CanoScan LiDE 210 scanner, Color Space: RGB, Color Profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1, current Monitor Gamma setting on the scanner is set to 1.80
How can I make JPEG images appear in Motion (and Final Cut Pro) so they are true to the source from which they were scanned?

Does it do the same thing when you use TIFFs?

  • HELP, why does saved image look too sharp when re-opened in Photoshop but normal in Windows viewer?

Been using Photoshop Elements 7 for several years and this has never happened before!  I applied sharpening to an image and saved two copies: PSD and JPEG.  When I re-opened the PSD file it looked WAY over-sharpened.  In Photoshop Editor I then opened the JPEG and it too looked way over-sharpened.  But the strange thing is that when I view the JPEG in the Windows Photo Viewer it looks normal!  Just as it did when I originally saved it.   I decided to try an experiment.  I opened the PSD file that now appears overly sharpened and saved a new JPEG.  I then opened the new JPEG in Windows Photo Viewer -- and it looks normal, even though it was saved from the PSD file that looks over-sharp!  I then opened the same, newly saved JPEG in Photoshop -- and it now looks oversharp and distorted, just like the PSD file.  Can anyone tell me what is going on here?  I'm completely confused!  Hope someone can help me figure this out.  Thanks!

The over sharpening may have caused a color shift.
You might have better luck using the adjust sharpness command. Enhance<Adjust Sharpness.

    Hi Dore,
According to your description, I understand that you want to set Integrated Windows authentication(IWA) for internal client access, Forms-based authentication(FBA) for external client.
If I misunderstand your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.
As you mentioned, we can create another virtual directory and configure different authentication with different website. More details about
Configuring Multiple OWA/ECP Virtual Directories on Exchange 2010 Client Access Server, please refer to:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/01/17/configuring-multiple-owa-ecp-virtual-directories-on-exchange-2010-client-access-server.aspx
“Microsoft strongly recommends OWA and ECP virtual directories in the Default Web Site be configured for IWA, leaving the InternalURL as with the default (Server FQDN), making that site and virtual directory the target of proxy requests from other Active
Directory sites or delegated connections from the firewall.
Microsoft recommends creating the second OWA/ECP virtual directories in a new IIS web site with a different IP address, and using it for internal client access. By default the new virtual directories will be FBA-enabled, and have no internal or external
    URL values.”

  • Color Settings Images are too warm and light while editing

Can someone help me understand color settings in Photoshop. My images look much lighter and warmer when I edit them than when I export them using Save for Web.
For a while I though it was because I was importing a raw file with a different color depth and profile so when it got saved as a jpg that the colors and brightness would shift. Recently, I made a graphic in Photoshop and it still looked warmer than the export. I also know temperature is displayed wrong in photoshop because when I create a neutral gray color its too warm. When it's exported using save for web the temperature is shown correctly.
If it was a mis calibrated monitor it would look warm all of the time. I'm using Photoshop CS3, my color profile is sRGB with color management turned off (its off because espon recommends this setting because it can better manage colors). Although I tried changing these settings and they don't seem to make a difference. Here's neutral gray image with screen caps to show you what I'm talking about.
    http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a317/pcofran/test/photoshop-color.jpg

Calibration tools calibrate your monitor to produce colors on screen that will look proper given your room lighting. Think of calibration as being a very precise, accurate adjustment to the contrast, brightness, and RGB controls of your monitor. Obviously, if these controls are set differently, your images will view differently. Calibration results in the monitor being set properly for display of images at a known gamma. You can get fairly good, but not totally accurate, calibration visually, without a colorimeter, using appropriate software tools.
Calibration tools also produce a profile that allows color managed software, such as Photoshop, to adjust its output for very precise reproduction within the gamut of your display. Again, there are some tools that produce a profile visually, but you get better results with a colorimeter.
Why should this be necessary? You want to display your images with the intended colors. You also want the proper colors to be sent to your printer or the files on your website. If your monitor isn't properly calibrated and profiled, pixels from the image file that are, say, light gray (RGB 200,200,200) might appear as middle gray, near-white, or even tinged with red or blue. If you adjust the colors in the image file so it displays the way you want it, the pixels in the file will no longer be light gray and will display as something else entirely on a different monitor, when printed, or when viewed at a website.

  • DULL colors only on  Adobe photoshop CS2 after buying a new monitor

    Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me!
Recently I bought a new widescreen LG monitor L206WTQ - which I had plugged in and installed the drivers etc etc! The screen works fine.
I decided to open up my Adobe photoshop CS2 for the first time, to do some photoshopping (also to see what adobe would look like on my new monitor) ...and when I opened the my adobe, a error message popped up saying something like "your monitor 'LG monitor L206WTQ' is defected ... ..." - Now because I wasnt too sure what the message mean't, I just closed the message window and continued to work on adobe - which actually seemed to be running fine - only untill i relized that I could not get the true color WHITE on my color palete!
I searched google for the problem and to my amazement ... I found a forum that answered my question. The forum told me to go to CONTROL PANEL > DISPLAY > COLOR MANAGEMENT > and then once I was here, click ADD to add the AdobeRGB1998.icc file and set it as the default color profile.
I accepted these settings and opened up my Adobe to find that it WORKED ... I could get the true color white again.
BUT! ... now I have found another problem and this is where I need your help. I was searching for photographs on my computer to photoshop on Adobe and when i opened up an image on adobe ... I noticed that the color of the photo is SLIGHTLY DULL compared to the original - Almost as though Adobe made the image a little less brighter. I double clicked on the photo in my MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER, so that i could compare the image to the one on adobe and I was right ... the image did look a bit more dull on Adobe. I thought maybe it was that particular image but every photo I open up on a Adobe now, becomes slightly dull.
Strangely enough ... when I edit a photo in Adobe and save it under these "dull" conditions ... and open the edited image in my MY DOCUMENTS folder, the images color is back to normal!
Why do all my images get this 'dull' condition only when I view / open them up in adobe???
I can't find a forum that has an answer to my question and I'm just hoping one of you experts can help me out, thanks in advance!!

    Dale,
Photoshop is colour managed. This means when sending RGB to the monitor it uses a profile that describes the monitor's behaviour.
In order to display colours properly it has to change the RGB values sent to that specific monitor. The device profile is a set of offset values that is typical for that one monitor.
Your current profile probably belongs to your previous monitor. Recalibrate an profile your monitor.

  • FCE quicktime conversion too Light

When I export a FCE move to quicktime using h.264 it comes out a least one shade too light.
    Am I doing something wrong?
I am exporting "Using Quicktime Conversion..."
Thanks in advance for your help - Sam

Thank you Tom for your quick response.
I am viewing the converted movie on the same machine and monitor I use for Final Cut Express.
I have viewed the movie in both Quicktime 7.6.6 and Quicktime 10. The movies both look too light compared to the Canvas window in Final Cut Express.
When I open a new project in Final Cut Express with the converted movie it looks fine.
The settings when using quicktime conversion are:
    H.264

  • Printing Too Light

I have been creating Pdf files from both AutoCAD and Microstation.  The files look perfect on the screen but when I print them to our plotter Xerox Wide Format Print System 8825 the image prints too light.  Files consist of black and grey scaled objects.  Is there any way to print 'wysiwyg' from adobe
So far the only way to imporove the prinitng has been to use the print as image option.  But this decreases the quality.
    Thank you

  • CS4 Color looks too saturated on Screen?

Hi all, not sure why but my color in CS4 Photoshop look oversaturated.
When I view them with ACDsee viewer or Canon software they both look the same. But when I use photoshop the images look too saturated. It's not easy to edit my photos, as the out put does not look the same as when I am editing.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance, awaiting any messages that may help out.
    Coolpix

What are your colour management policies in the Color Settings panel? And do you calibrate your monitor?
You can get increased saturation -- actually ugly colors -- if assigning a higher gammut profile to an image tagged with a lower gammut profile, e.g. assign AdobeRGB to an sRGB image.
(Note that 'Assigning' a profile gives far different results than 'Converting to' a profile.)

  • New Monitor Help

I'm a graphic designer and have the old acrylic 23" monitor. Looking at purchasing a new monitor and was looking at Apple's 30". Is this very good for graphic work or is there something better out there for around the same price?
    Thanks for your help

Hi Tanya! I was in a similar situation as you and have decided (I am not sure if you are open to the idea) to grab two smaller screens. Although it is a smaller screen, another screen to consider (for graphic design) is the NEC LCD2470WNX (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=29847 79&CatId=12).
I know you were looking at the 30" and this is clearly isn't that large ... I just thought I'd suggest another alternative.

When I type information on an invoice on Pages, it is too light.  How do I make it darker?

    DB,
Do all your apps look too light, or is it just Pages?
You can use a larger font or a different font. Some fonts look light by design, some look bolder.
Make sure the color you are using in your document is actually Black and not some shade of gray. Check the color picker for the text.
