ImageWriter II on OS X 10.4.6?

Hi,
I know I'm going to need a USB to Serial adaptor to make this work...any kind better than another?
Also, where can I download a driver? And would an OS 9 driver be okay if I wanted to print from an OS 9 program?
Yes, I still use ImageWriters. Nothing beats them for multiple part forms. Too bad I need to rig it up to a Mac SE every time I need one.

The Linux Printing/cups/Gimp-Print suite has drivers that will work. It does not support the fancy last-form-tearoff feature that the Apple Mac OS 9 drivers offer.
The package installs drivers for serial ports (Printer and Modem serial ports) if you are using a Mac that still has them.
If your ImageWriter II is equipped with the LocalTalk Option Card (which is still available on the used market), you can turn it into a "Network" printer, accessible from any Mac on your network.
Linux Printing drivers also install an AppleTalk/LocalTalk-over-Ethernet driver. The Farallon bridge, the Asante Asantetalk bridge, and an Apple LocalTalk bridge software package that runs in the background on an older Mac that has both Ethernet and serial/Localtalk ports are all good solutions to the LocalTalk problem.

         }I found that the color in the output file created by "imagewrite" was reversed - bim is red but pi is blue.
    The one created by "filestore" was correct: pi2 was red.
    Did I use the "imagewrite" operation incorrectly? How should I use the imagewrite operation?

    I think you are using it correctly and you've encountered a bug. The same thing occurs on my machine. PlanarImage is using an interlaced raster which stores pixels as BGRBGRBGR ect... But the only way I can see this causing a problem is if the imagewrite operation was going directly to the DataBuffer for the pixels. If it retrieved it through the raster the colors should not be switched.
    Interestingly enough if I do this
    JAI.create("imagewrite", bim.getAsBufferedImage(), "d:/dev/baseImage.png", "PNG");then it works correctly. This suggests even more that the fault is with imagewrite operation interpreting the PlanarImage wrongly.

  • Print to Imagewriter II from Intel MacBook Pro, Quicken, Leopard OS 10.5

    What will it take to print to an Imagewriter II dot-matrix printer from a 2007 MacBook Pro 2.2 (OS 10.5.2, Quicken 2007)?
    I'd like to still use my pin-fed checks.
    I'm trying to move my accounting and check printing from an old, but still workable, Mac SE/30 system (OS 7, Quicken 7). Ain't those old machines great!!!!!
    Will I need a Print Driver?
    How will I connect?
    (I have lots of other older Macs around: Tangerine iMac, original PowerBook.
    I have a LAN over a Belkin router.
    Don't have a LocalTalk option card or a Farallon AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to Appletalk/LocalTalk converter, but maybe could get?)
    Thanks for your input!
    --PSMacintosh

    I'm a bit confused here.
    Let's see if I understand correctly.
    Method One:
    If I buy and install a USB-to-Serial Adapter and plug it into my MBP's USB port, then I can serial cable directly from the Imagewriter II to the MBP and print.
    I have to load the drivers for the USB-to-Serial Adapter.
    I have to load the foomatic and GPL Ghostwriter drivers to convert Quicken 2007's postscript print format to Imagewriter's format (appletalk? localtalk?).
    I don't have to have an Appletalk/Localtalk card in the Imagewriter.
    Method Two (install an Appletalk/Localtalk card in the Imagewriter, then connect somehow (via ethernet) to my network):
    I tried to find the card on eBay, but couldn't find it with any search words that I used. What are the right words?
    Do I understand correctly that I need:
    a AppleTalk/LocalTalk option card that will install inside of the Imagewriter II?
    will connect into a slot inside the Imagewriter II?
    and will have an ethernet port on it?
    Then I'll need to connect an ethernet cable from the card port to either my computer directly (disconnect its ethernet network cable and use its ethernet port) or connect to the network router via ethernet?
    (I do have a 34 Express Card slot on the MBP, so maybe I could buy an Express Card that has an ethernet port and connect to the MBP, rather than the network router?)
    ALTERNATIVE-- Method Three:
    I do have an Original Powerbook (Family: M3553), running OS 9 and not having Quicken 2007 Mac, which has a Serial Port on it (I'm pretty sure that its printer port interface is serial) and is connected by ethernet to the network router.
    So, if I serial cable from the Imagewriter to the Powerbook, turn on the PowerBook to connect to the network, then could I print to the Imagewriter from my MBPro?
    I'd have to "see" the printer on my MBP. Or I'd have to drop the print file into the PowerBook's Drop Box and then print it from the PB.
    But there's still a problem here because the GPL Ghostwriter from your reference only runs on OS 10s, and not OS 9s.
    But maybe that's not a problem because I don't have to install it on the PowerBook with OS 9, but rather on the MBP.
    So, if I install the foomatic and GPL Ghostwriter on the MBP, then it converts the print file (from postscript to appletalk??), then I send the print file to the PowerBook and then to the Imagewriter, I guess that should work?

  • How to change a imagewriter ribbon

    hey does anyone know how to change an imagewriter 2 color and black ribbon?
    Ive been looking for places on the web for instructions but no dice! if someone can put a link for me here i would greatly appreciate it.

    You just release the latches on the sides of the body of the ribbon cartridge by pressing down and outward. That frees the body of the cartridge from the carrier. Then wiggle the ribbon part a little and it comes right out past the printhead.
    Installation is similar. Take any slack out of the ribbon cartridge, start it behind the print head, then drop it onto the carrier and press down until the catches snap it into place.
    The four-color ribbon cartridge has a slightly different shape so that it activates the microswitch on the front of the carrier to tell the printer that the four-color ribbon is installed. When you close the lid and press select, it will do the usual step to left margin, seek center, and then move the ribbon up and down through a longer range than usual with the black ribbon, then come ready.
    The operation of the form thickness lever moves the printhead away from the platen to implement this function, so if the fabric is pinched too tightly behind the printhead for easy removal, setting the form thickness to maximum will get you the maximum clearance.

  • Imagewriter II. White gaps in graphics printing.

    Hi I have an Apple Imagewriter II I'm using for an art project. It prints colour graphics well, but has quite obvious white gaps between each line of printing.
    Does anyone know if there is a way of aligning the heads so the gaps disappear? Cheers all

    I seem to remember a setting like HQ or LQ on that model that made it print more slowly (if you can imagine that), more loudly (if you can tolerate that), and more accurately. It could be that the ribbon is wearing out or misallinged with the pins. A little light cleaning of the print carriage might help. I know this definitely happens more often and more severely with color than black, since the strips of each color on the ribbon are so thin.

  • ImageWriter and ByteArrayOutputStream problem

                    ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream(bais.available());
                    ImageInputStream iis = ImageIO.createImageInputStream(bais);
                    tiffReader.setInput(iis);
                    ImageOutputStream ios = ImageIO.createImageOutputStream(baos);
                    tiffWriter.setOutput(ios);
                    TIFFImageWriteParam param = new TIFFImageWriteParam(Locale.US); // (TIFFImageWriteParam) tiffWriter.getDefaultWriteParam();
                    param.setCompressionMode(ImageWriteParam.MODE_EXPLICIT);
                    param.setCompressionType("CCITT T.6");
                    //System.out.println("PhotoInterp = " + param.getPhotometricInterpretation());
                    int page = 0;
                    tiffWriter.prepareWriteSequence(tiffReader.getStreamMetadata());
                    while(true) {
                        try {

                            //tiffWriter.writeInsert(page, new IIOImage(img,null,null),param);

  • Does an original Imagewriter work with a Macintosh Se

    Does an original Apple ImageWriter printer work with a Macintosh Se with system 6.0.8 and finder 6.1.8? Thanks!

    Thanks for telling me that because I'm looking for a printer for my Macintosh se and I when I found out about the ImageWriter printer I know that it would have to be one of those.

  • Would like to use my ImageWriter II

    I have an ImageWriter II and would like to know if it is possible to connect it to my Intel iMac or my G3 iBook and how.

    You can get a USB to Serial Port adapter like the one shown here:

    But whether or not your new iMac will accept ImageWriter printer driver software, or if you can even find it anywhere, I'm not sure about.

  • Need help using ImageWriter.setOutput()

    I'm using Java ImageI/O to capture a buffered image, send it to a servlet so that it can then be saved as a .jpg. But I'm having a major hang up on the setOutput() of ImageWriter.
    Can anyone help me use this method to set my output?? I've tried multiple times, but I keep getting errors of wrong output type, output not set, output == null....
    I'm using an outputStream defined as:
    ObjectOutputStream outputStream = new ObjectOutputStream(connection.getOutputStream());
    where connection is the URLConnection to the location of my Servlet.
    When I try to set this outputStream to my ImageWriter writer:
    writer.setOutput(outputStream);
    I get a runtime error of: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Illegal output type!
    The documentation says setOutput takes Objects. Maybe I'm just not understanding something with this method. I've seen the method used repeatedly when set to a File. But I'm using an applet and need to have it set to an OutputStream. (I tried ImageOutputStream, and ByteArrayOutputStream as well, but just get a variety of runtime errors). Any help or references would be great. Thank you.

    Thanks for the info..
    But this is something I have tried.. I get a java.lang.SecurityException: unable to create temporary file. I suppose this is because i'm in an applet, however the outputStream object is based on the home URLConnection of the applet.

  • Apple ImageWriter II Printer Stuck on Power On

    Hi, I just reclaimed an ImageWriter II from the garage, but when I turn it on it makes a horrible groaning/grinding sound, and the print head fails to move. It seems it's stuck and can't return to the home position.

  • Imagewriter II to Beige G3

    I am trying to hook up an Imagewriter II to a Beige G3 with Mac OS 9.2.2. I tried using a direct 8 pin mini-din to 8 pin min-din with no luck. I also tried using the AppleTalk connectors: 8 pin mini-din from Imagewriter, then AppleTalk and then connecting to the G3. I also downloaded Imagewriter driver 7.0.1, for both Imagewriter and Imagewriter with AppleTalk. I see the image of the Imagewriter on my desktop, but it's not in the chooser and I can't print from it. Any ideas?

    I remove those three desktop Printer extensions with Extensions Manager (a Control Panel) by unchecking their checkboxes.
    If you have a standard printer (no LocalTalk option card) and a Mac Peripheral-8 cable as I described above, plug it into the Printer port on the computer and the serial port on the printer. Caveats here are that you may have a modem cable, but there are not nearly so many of those available -- most of them ended in a DB-9 or DB-25 at the modem end.
    Open the Chooser and click on the ImageWriter Driver Icon in the left panel. If there is no ImageWriter Icon in the left panel, you have not properly placed the driver (a Chooser Extension) in the Extensions folder inside the "System Folder".
    When you click on the Driver Icon in the left panel, the printer's name should appear in a quarter minute or less in the right panel. If it does not, you may not have Appletalk assigned to the correct port. To fix this, turn AppleTalk off in the Chooser panel and open AppleTalk Control Panel directly. Assign AppleTalk to the Printer port and make it active. Close the panel to save your changes. Then try selecting the Driver in the Chooser again.
    How did you get this ImageWriter? Did it come with PhoneNet connectors? Do you think it has the LocalTalk option card installed?

    Old rules never change.  Garbage in, garbage out.  The path should be /usr/share/cups/model.  You may or may not have the "model" directory.  I can't remember if they even include that anynore.
    If the serial backend it installs at /usr/libexec/cups/backend is PPC only, it would be completely inert on a Lion iMac (Intel), right?
    Inert under 10.7.x.  Would still function on an Intel computer that was running Rosetta.
    The "serial" file I have in that location is dated 3/31/2010 so I'm assuming its presence is due to your Serial Print Enabler, right?
    Correct.  An installer will clobber any file of the same name but with an earlier creation date unless they take specific action to make a backup of existing files.
    Yes, it's there, dated 12/11/2002, therefore it can't possibly be Intel and is thus useless as well?
    A serial file that is dated 2002 will be ppc only and will not work.  My installer will archive any serial file that it finds and remove the executible flag before it installs the one in my package.  I don't like messing with people's computers without giving them a way back out.
    foomatic-gswrapper - same date, same question?
    foomatic-gs-wrapper and cupsomatic are written in perl.  As such they are neither ppc or Intel.  They rely on the ppc or Intel perl interpreter that comes with OS X.
    From the above it would appear the imagewriter-foomatic-1.2-1.ppc.dmgpackage is completely pointless. Does it install anything useful? If so, what and where?
    The current package doesn't do much useful right now for Snow Leopard and Lion users.  At least it installs PPDs, cupsomatic, and foomatic-gswrapper that will work together if you install a more recent serial backend and manally add the printer.
    The current PPDs found at OpenPrinting.org are all written to use thefoomatic-rip filter which calls Ghsoscript automatically.  There is no more need for the foomatic-gswrapper.
    Correct.
    Which of the downloads that I linked contained the foomatic-gswrapper you reference? Is it imagewriter-foomatic-1.2-1.ppc.dmg? If so it should be omitted from my procedure, and only Foomatic-RIP is necessary, right? And if that is the case, which of the files I referenced (if any) contains an ImageWriter PPD?
    As noted above the imagewriter-foomatic-1.2.ppc.dmg installs the cupsomatic filter, foomatic-gswrapper, and PPD files.  These all work together.
    From what you wrote it seems as though I have no ImageWriter-specific PPDinstalled on this Lion Mac. Can that be right? I have absolutely no Imagewriter- specific files at /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/ Only HP and Brother gzip files and a couple of empty localization folders.
    Look at the correct path as cited above -- /usr/share/cups/model.  That used to be the CUPS default location.  Only OS X uses /Library/Prinrters/PPDs…
    If I have all that correct I have another question - namely how does a PostScript output become a raster file. The only component left is what I called the GPLPostScript interpreter / CUPS interface gplgs-8.71.dmg that installs at/usr/local/share/ghostscript/
    Is that what does it?
    I'm going to confuse you now.  The actual driver for the ImageWriters is built in to Ghostscript.  It is the iwhi driver.  You may see reference to that if you look at a PPD.  Here's a basic run down of what happens during a print job. I'm sure there are some technical inaccuracies here, but it will give you an idea of what happens.  Here I use foomatic-rip.  The cupsomatic filter does the same job.
    An application sends a PDF file along with the job options.
    The printing system takes a look at the job and what the printer wants.  In this case, the PPD is saying it wants PostScript and to send the PostScript to the foomatic-rip filter.
    The printing system converts the job to PostScript and sends it to the foomatic-rip filter.
    The foomatic-rip filter combines the job options with the Postscript and sends everything to Ghoscript and the iwhi driver built in to Ghostscript.
    It now comes back in a form the printer understands and is sent to the printer via the serial backend which comminicates with the printer.  It all magically appears on the paper.
    I think this is the essence of my remaining confusion. Where are those "old PPDs", since I can't find them anywhere, and if the cupsomatic filter is as old asfoomatic-gswrapper - both pre-Intel - how can it possibly work?
    The old PPDs are at /usr/share/cups/model.  Both cupsomatic and foomatic-gswrapper are perl scripts which are neither ppc or Intel.  They are text based command language.
