IMAP Settings changing by themselves

I have setup IMAP accounts in Mail 3.6 (Leopard 10.5.7). Due to constraints of server space, I have the settings to NOT store Drafts, Sent, Junk or Trash on the server, but to store them on the local machine. Since the Inbox is the most important thing for iPhone access and not the sent stuff, it helps out in saving space since the ISP only allows 100 MB. Unfortunately, I'm having issue that as soon as I send, mark something Junk or save a draft, the settings mysteriously change back to storing everything on the server. I have to manually open the account prefs, change it back and then copy those messages off the server to the appropriate folders. It seems to stabilize after about 5 times of doing this, but I'm upgrading a whole office of computers to Leopard and all of their Mail apps are doing this over and over. Anyone have tips or work-arounds for this?
Thanks!

The IMAP protocol is designed to keep the mail server and your mail client in sycnhronization with each other at all times, regardless of where you access your email. So if you don't want or need that, change the accounts to POP accounts; that is, setup new POP accounts for each email address, import the existing mail from the IMAP accounts into them, and then delete the IMAP accounts.
But even doing that, when you Send email, it will be stored on the mail server, unless you manually delete it; and when you receive Junk mail online in the web client, it will be stored on the server unless you have it designated to go to the Trash and be deleted automatically.

  • Help...Iphone 5c settings changed by themselves

    I have an iPhone5c and today my settings changed automatically by themselves and when I have attempted to change them back they will not stick.
    Specifically my battery percentage has disappeared and my message settings have changed as well. I had my settings to where there would be no message preview but now there is a preview and I am unable to change them back when I select those options. I change the setting back to how it was but then it reverts to how it automatically changed.
    Can someone please assist me with how to fix this!? Aside from paying $30 or making an appointment, I was advised this was my only option.
    Thank you in advance!

    Your profile says you are using IOS 8.0.2?
    You can update to the latest IOS 8.1.1.
    As for settings not sticking:
    Check if you have Restrictions set for those items.
    Note: you need to enable Restriction to change/see what is set.

  • About:config settings change by themselves when switching between windows/linux on dual-boot machine with profile shared between OSs

    I dual-boot ubuntu and windows7, and have set up firefox to use the same profile data when running under either OS. This works great, except:
    (1) each time I switch OSs and start firefox, it runs the "checking add-on compatibility" test (which is a minor annoyance)
    (2) each time I start firefox in ubuntu after recently using it under windows, the about:config setting "browser.backspace.action" gets reset from my preferred setting (0) to the default setting (2).
    How can I prevent these two things from happening?

    Maybe it is better to use separate profiles for each OS and create symlinks or hard links to the sqlite databases that you want to share.
    Your Linux profile may be using extensions (e.g. Ubuntu Firefox Modifications) that modify specific settings and in such a case you can't really prevent this.<br />
    You can use a user.js file to initialize specific prefs on each start, but that makes it impossible to make changes on the about:config page that last the current session and you need to remember which prefs are affected.

  • Location settings change by themselves

    I am trying to set up several "locations" so I can quickly change configurations (mostly between being wired-only or wireless-only to I can test various devices).
    For example, I have locations "Automatic" (where Ethernet and Wireless are enabled), "Ethernet 192.168.1.12 only," and "Wireless only." I set up one location, then a second, and so on, each time clicking "Apply" and locking the changes. However, the settings do not stick. For example, in the Ethernet-only locations, I have turned off Airport, but after turning on Airport in a different location, Airport might spontaneously come on in the Ethernet location. Often, the location I have selected in the popup menu *changes by itself* as I try to enable or disable services in some other location! It's spooky.
    In summary, I cannot get my location settings to stick. They change after I have Applied and Locked them, and sometimes the location itself changes on its own.
    I have searched this group, and found nobody else describing this problem.
    What's going on? How can I get the location settings to stick?

    I too can't get my network settings to "stick".
    I assumed that Location Services simply couldn't do that. But it makes so much sense to have location services control the network & printer settings (and even use the network the Mac can see to prompt a change in location).
    So I'll add my voice to your question.
    Anyone know if location services can affect network settings?

  • UDF Settings Change By Themselves

    Hello,
    We have had cases where it seems like our UDF setting change by itself.  We have tried to set our UDF so that the same UDF's appear for each user.  The way we made this change is in the UDF Settings is we created a category called Hidden.  We select Hidden for everything we do not want to see -- which is most of the UDF options.  Then on the screen itself we select General so we only see those UDF's that we want to see.
    After making this change for each individual user, the next day we may go back and find that for one user one or two of the fields that were originally marked as Hidden are now marked as General and can be viewed on the screen?!
    Why is this happening!!
    Any ideas would be very much appreciated -- very frustrating!
    Thanks,
    Mike

    What key combinations could accidentally do this?
    We created a category in the UDF other than General called Hidden. We then selected Hidden as their category in the Settings.  Then selected General in the main screen to view only those we wanted to see.
    Any other suggestions on how we could make sure people don't change the UDF?  Is there any other possibility as to why sometimes UDF's we do not want shown all of a sudden show up?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Mail SSL settings changing by themselves

    So, i have this problem, which very likely will end up with me putting my Macbook air under the sledgehammer by the end of this week if not solved.
    On one of my account, the SSL is needed for my mail to work properly, i tick off the SSL option, and save the chages, then the mails come in as normal, but during the day, it removes itself again, and mails get stuck again, indicated by the triangular ! sign.
    What is wrong, and how do i save my Mackbook from the sledgehammer?
    Thanks!

    Open Mail and Mail Preferences window. Go to Accounts button and highlight your mail account that you have a problem with. Go to Advanced tab and disable option Automatically detect and maintain account settings and enabled option Allow insecure authentication. Do the same thing for your Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) settings.

  • Java doesn't pick up system's DNS settings change until restarted

    Hello,
    I have a service running on a few Linux computers. Those computers have a NIC, which is configured with a fixed IP address. So /etc/resolv.conf contains the IP address of the LAN's DNS server. But most of the time, the computers are not plugged into the LAN at all. Instead, they connect themselves periodically to the Internet by establishing a ppp connection. When it happens, the ISP's DHCP server assign them new IP parameters, including their DNS server's IP address. And /etc/resolv.conf gets updated with this address.
    But it seems that java doesn't take care of DNS change taking place during a run. Which means that my program (started at boot with no connectivity at all) tries to connect to some host, and obviously trigger an "UnknownHostException" (at that point it does try to contact the LAN's DNS server). Quite logical. Later, the ppp link become active. But my program still try to contact the LAN's DNS server, despite the new configuration in /etc/resolv.conf. As such, it will forever trigger UnknowHostExceptions, until it gets restarted (it will then pick up the new settings) or it is plugged back into the LAN (it will finally reach the LAN's DNS server).
    This is quite a problem as during one single execution, the machine may encounter several DNS configuration changes, and this problem basically means that it will be impossible for my application to resolve any name at all.
    So is there a way to tell Java to re-read the system wide DNS configuration? Or is there some option to prevent Java to "cache" the DNS server to use?
    To demonstrate my problem, I've written a simple test case, see below.
    To get the problem:
    1) Put a bogus DNS server into your /etc/resolv.conf
    2) Start the test program. Wait for some time: it will trigger UnknownHostExceptions.
    3) Fix the entry in /etc/resolv.conf, and check it actually works (eg ping www.google.be)
    4) Test program will continue to trigger UnknownHostExceptions forever.
    One interesting fact is that someone tried this test on Windows, and didn't suffer from this behaviour, eg the application reacts to DNS system settings changes dynamically. So it looks like a Linux-only problem.
    Thanks in advance for your insight.
    Pierre-Yves
    package com.test.dnsresolver;
    import java.net.InetAddress;
    import java.net.UnknownHostException;
    public class DnsResolver {
        private static String urlString = "www.google.com";
        public static void main(String[] args) {
             * Specified in java.security to indicate the caching policy for successful
             * name lookups from the name service. The value is specified as as integer
             * to indicate the number of seconds to cache the successful lookup.
            java.security.Security.setProperty("networkaddress.cache.ttl" , "10");
             * Specified in java.security to indicate the caching policy for un-successful
             * name lookups from the name service. The value is specified as as integer to
             * indicate the number of seconds to cache the failure for un-successful lookups.
             * A value of 0 indicates "never cache". A value of -1 indicates "cache forever".
            java.security.Security.setProperty("networkaddress.cache.negative.ttl", "0");
            int loopCounter = 0;
            while (true) {
                InetAddress resolved;
                try {
                    resolved = InetAddress.getByName(urlString);
                    System.out.println("Loop " + loopCounter + ": resolved IP address: " + resolved);
                } catch (UnknownHostException e) {
                    System.out.println("Loop " + loopCounter + ": UnknownHostException");
                    e.printStackTrace();
                loopCounter++;
                try {
                    Thread.sleep(1000);
                } catch (InterruptedException e) {}
    }

    Well, the nameservice property allowing to specify my DNS server of choice is interesting (I didn't know about those), but not very usable, as the DNS server to use is not known in advance (it may be whatever the ISP tells me to use at the time where the ppp link gets established). So no real solution there.
    The fact that it caches /etc/resolv.conf content for 300s is very interesting, but having no possibility to impact on this duration really is a pity. There should be some kind of property to fix this behaviour. So as you say, a custom provider may be the only solution.
    So far, the hack I use to get this working is based on code similar to this one (it is presented here in a similar form than my test case above). Obviously, reading the /etc/resolv.conf for each dns resolution is not an option in a real environment, but you get the idea.
    package com.test.dnsresolver;
    import java.io.BufferedReader;
    public class DnsResolver {
         private static final String urlString = "www.google.com";
         private static final String resolvConf = "/etc/resolv.conf";
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              int loopCounter = 0;
              while (true) {
                   loopCounter++;
                   try {
                        Thread.sleep(1000);
                   } catch (InterruptedException e) {}
                   // Parse the current DNS server to be used in the config
                   String nameserver = null;
                   try {
                        BufferedReader input =  new BufferedReader(new FileReader(new File(resolvConf)));
                        String currentLine = null;
                        while (( currentLine = input.readLine()) != null){
                             // Take care of potential comments
                             currentLine = currentLine.substring(0, currentLine.indexOf("#") == -1
                                       ? currentLine.length() : currentLine.indexOf("#") );
                             if (currentLine.contains("nameserver")) {
                                  // It is the line we are looking for
                                  nameserver = currentLine;
                                  break;
                   } catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
                        System.out.println("Loop " + loopCounter + ": FileNotFoundException");
                   } catch (IOException e) {
                        System.out.println("Loop " + loopCounter + ": IOException");
                   if (nameserver == null) {
                        // No "nameserver" line found
                        System.out.println("Loop " + loopCounter + ": No nameserver found in configration file!");
                        continue;
                   // Trim it to just contain the IP address
                   nameserver = (nameserver.replace("nameserver", "")).trim();
                   System.out.println("Loop " + loopCounter + ": Going to use DNS server " + nameserver);
                   // At this point, we know which server to use, now perform the resolution
                   Hashtable<String, String> env = new Hashtable<String, String>();
                   env.put("java.naming.factory.initial", "com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory");
                   env.put("java.naming.provider.url",    "dns://" + nameserver);
                   DirContext ictx;
                   try {
                        ictx = new InitialDirContext(env);
                        Attributes attrs1 = ictx.getAttributes(urlString, new String[] {"A"});
                        System.out.println("Loop " + loopCounter + ": Manual resolution: +" + attrs1.get("a").get() + "+");
                   } catch (NamingException e) {
                        System.out.println("Loop " + loopCounter + ": NamingException");
    }So maybe I should adapt and package this into a proper provider and specify it for sun.net.spi.nameservice.provider. Any link, info or example about how a proper provider should look like?
    Thanks for your advices!

  • IMAP settings

    Should I change my IMAP email settings?
    Verizon just emailed me with new settings to improve security:
    Incoming mail server settings
    POP server: incoming.yahoo.verizon.net
    Use SSL
    Port: 995
    Outgoing mail server SMTP settings
    SMTP server: outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net
    Use SSL
    Port: 465
    But these are POP settings. I use IMAP settings, as follows.
    In: imap.mail.yahoo.com - port 993
    Out: smtp.mail.yahoo.com - port 465
    These settings work great for IMAP. Should I change 993 to 995 and keep the same IMAP server? Or is there a Yahoo-Verizon IMAP server that I don't know about?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Continue using your current setting. If you start having trouble accessing your email account, please switch to the POP settings.

  • ICal Calendar Colors Changing by Themselves

    I have two devices that sync with my iCloud account, a Macbook Pro and an iPhone 5. I primarily use iCloud to sync my calendar, notes, and reminders.
    By some reason when I got home from work last night, the color of every calendar in iCal (on the Macbook Pro) and in the calendar app (on the iPhone) kept changing color by itself! I have 5 different calendars (Home, School, Work, Homework, Possibility) and each one usually has its own color. But for some reason, the "Work" calendar changed color from blue to orange on the iPhone without me doing anything. It changed right in front of my eyes. I then clicked on it and manually changed the color to red. Then it was red for some time, but on the MacBook Pro it was purple!
    It is very frustrating as it kills the purpose of having multiple calendars. I have checked for software updates on my MacBook Pro and my iPhone 5, nothing there. I have restarted the MacBook Pro and I have restored the iPhone 5, nothing there.
    I have also unchecked every calendar, and checked them one by one to see how they interact with each other, but that does not matter. Even if only calendar is checked, it still changes color whenever it feels like it. As a matter of fact, all the colors don't even match the ones on the MacBook Pro and the ones on the iPhone 5. They are changing by themselves, and they are changing on both devices, ignoring both me and the other device.
    I spoke with Apple yesterday for about 2-3 hours, including a senior advisor, and they had no clue how to solve it.
    Do you have any suggestions to what I can do?
    Note: I'd like to point out that my events do sync. If I create an event on my iPhone 5, it will transfer to the MacBook Pro automatically, so that's good. It's just the colors that are messed up.

    Hey all try this out cause this is what worked out for me
    I have been having my "work" ical switch back and forth between green and purple and it was annoying so here is what I did.
    I turned off my icloud from my iphone, "deleting" everything in my ical on my phone. THIS IS A CRUCIAL STEP. It will prevent your phone or pad from constantly updating and making sure your faulty calendar is still available.
    Next I went to my ical on my laptop and EXPORT my "Work" ical to my desktop. I created a "New Calendar" titled "Work1" and then IMPORTED my "Work" ical into "Work1." I now have BOTH "Work" and "Work1" on my ical loading up to icloud AFTER you REFRESH by right clicking on your calendars and selecting REFRESH. Next you need to go tohttps://www.icloud.com/#calendar and LOGIN. You will now have acess to your icloud and fiddle around with it. BOTH "Work" and "Work1" should be present now. Now in the bottom left it says EDIT. Click and then DELETE your "Work" ical. You can then EDIT the name of "Work1" to be "Work." IT should now be updated and your faulty "Work" or whatever is now removed.
    LASTLY, go back to your iPhone or iPad and TURN ON your iCloud. Your iCal will restore and no more faulty changing colors. Best of luck!
    NOTE** I'm using this for both my iPhone 4S and macbook pro

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
    Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings

  • Security settings change when rendered from third party Windows 2008 R2 server

    We created a fillable PDF form in Adobe Acrobat and made it Reader extended. Opening the form on a local hard drive the security settings show that Signing: is Allowed. We can sign documents in the form with a signature pad.
    After we upload it to a third party Windows server 2008 R2, and we later go to access the form, the server renders it back to us in Adobe Reader. We are unable to digitally sign documents in the form with a Topaz signature pad. We notice that although the form was originally created with the form being Reader extended the security settings change to Signing: Not Allowed.
    How can we get the server to render the document back to us where we can digitally sign documents in the form?

    The second file still shows the extended rights header is present (it's warning you about restrictions at the top of the dialog while also reporting the method is "no security") but the digital signature which grants those extended rights will be invalidated if *anything* in the file structure is changed. I suspect in this case that the server software is doing something to your file; it may be trivial such as adding an XMP tag, but it's enough to break the hash check.

  • Sequence settings changed and digital cinema freezes. what now?

    hello there.
    i'm a new fcp user and i could really use some help on some issues that came up while working on a film project.
    the material was captured with the camera function of a digital still camera, which resulted in rushes of .avi format, 30 fps, 640X480 frame size.
    we then converted these into .mov clips using quicktime and compressor so that we can work without the need to render. we encoded them using the Apple ProRes 422 codec.
    i opened a NTSC project to work on this and have created a sequence preset having exactly the same settings as my clips (Apple ProRes 422, 30 fps, etc).
    i'm cutting the whole project on a macbook pro (see details below) running fcp 6.0.3 and i'm using a second monitor toggling between browser and digital cinema desktop preview.
    everything was working fine till yesterday, when suddently some sequences needed rendering (while they were working fine till then) and dcdp freezed (that is i get the first frame and i can hear the sound when i playback a clip or a sequence and then i get the current frame when i stop it).
    i've checked the sequence settings and i've found out that all of my sequences are now pal, 720X576, 25 fps. that's the first part of the problem. i tried changing the sequence settings, but of course i cannot change the frame rate; i've tried creating a new sequence with the correct settings and then copy&paste the clips from the prev sequence but then video and audio go out of synch by 2 frames. how did my settings changed all of a sudden? is there a way to keep my edited sequences without the need to manually re-cut the whole thing?
    as far as the second part of the problem is concerned (the dcdp not working anymore), i've tried changing my settings (going from full screen to raw, trying single frame against all frames, etc) but still it doesn't work. the rest of the settings are ok (eg. i've found in the forum that the checkbox about playback mirrored on the desktop should be ticked and it was already).
    this computer is never conected to the internet and it has never been manually updated (so there is not a way that an OS update is not working well with fcp).
    any ideas?
    thanx,
    nikos.

    I've experienced the exact same problems you are having and it's driving me nuts.
    It's not like my system has changed. I bought the Mac Pro and Final Cut Studio together and all was well when I first installed it. That initial project was an HDV project and DCDP worked great.
    Since then I'm working mostly on SD PAL projects and when I go to preview it on the desktop it does the first frame freeze when you hit play and parks on the current frame when you hit stop.
    I can resize the main edit window to full size and the sequence plays back fine but when I go to DCDP it just won't play at all. It feels like a bug but this is the first time I have found someone else with the same problem. By the way, I'm only using one monitor so the mirror desktop thing made no difference.
    I know the DCDP isn't great quality but it's fine for getting a general overview and I sure do miss it.
    Help us.......please......

  • Settings changing when adding to another movie

    Each time I attach a new chapter (mini movie) PROJECT to the already existing main movie PROJECT the settings change. I have tried adding on the front with the new chapter as well as trying to add the main movie to the mini movie. Is there a way to lock all settings on a movie so when it is added to another movie the setting won't change oon either clip. The chapter movie is approximately 1 1/2 minutes long and the main clip is approximately 9 Minutes long. There are several transitions, and scrolls included in both clips.
    Message was edited by: jimfromdenver

    Hi Luis, thanks for the reply. I first made a video approximately 8 minutes long. I used digitized video, still images, sound tracks, titles and numerous transitions between the clips. I then opened a new project and made a movie of one of the last letters sent home by the veteran prior to his death. I also used transitions, movie clips, titles and various images. So far I have three of these last letters completed. I was able to copy and pasted two of the letter clips in front of the main generic movie. However, when I attempted to paste the third clip at the beginning of the main movie and two letters - it causes some of the titles, scrolls to overlap.
