IMovie '11 on 10.6.8 greys out contents of library, so I cannot drag and drop clips to timeline.

This has happened on multiple occasions. I don't know why Apple can't figure out how to create a reliable program. I have been using iMovie for several months now, updated to '11 in April, on OSX 10.6.8, and usually it works fine, but occasionally, out of the blue, all of the clips in my library will be greyed out. I cannot edit them in timeline unless I go to each clip individually and open up the separate editing window, I cannot drag and drop the clips to timeline, I have to manually copy and paste, and I cannot see any of the clips unless I roll over them with my mouse. My free trial of Final Cut Pro just expired and I have a couple of videos that are almost finished and this is extremely frustrating. I have seen others with similar experiences and I'm wondering if there is anything at all I can do about it. Thank you.
P.S. I did try restarting the program about 5 times and restarted my computer. Nothing gives.

Of course, I might have found a fix right after posting this. In case someone else comes along with the same issue...
I closed my MBP cover, and re-opened (this solved a menu bar issue I was also having). I re-opened iMovie, and deleted the project I had started that couldn't be continued. I started a new project, and things seemed to work just fine. So I'm not sure what it was that caused the problem, but so far it seems to be working now. Good luck!

  • Dragging and Dropping within iMovie '08

I am new to iMovie '08. When I first started my project I was able to select a clip and drag directly from the events to the project library. However, now, when I try to drag, I just move the selection to another part of the event. I cannot drag and drop within the project either. Using Macbook trackpad to attempt drag and drop. Any help is appreciated.

I can do this, but dragging and dropping like described in the manual would be a lot easier.
Both methods work equally well for me. The usual problem with "Dragging and Dropping" is that the user is too impatient to wait for the segment clip index to be built before attempting to "drag" the segment to the Project window. By the time the segment is "built," the user has already released the "bundle" and it is too late for the application to detect the "active" drop area. You may notice that there is a slight delay between your segment selection/pressing the add button and the actual insertion of your clip segment. The delay is the same in both approaches, however, pressing the add button tells iMovie '08 where the segment is to be moved without the application having to detect an "active" area which may no longer be "active."

  • Unable to drag and drop out of aperture

    Hi,
As of a few days ago i've had a slight problem with my aperture libary.
I can no longer drag and drop images out of aperture onto the desktop or other apps etc.
I have not changed anything it was working fine until just recently - I haven't modified or done anything to change the behaviour.
    Aperture settings has previews enabled.
I have attempted to regenerate previews by selecting images and clicking regenerate
    I have rebuilt permissions
I have rebuilt the entire library
    I have re-installed aperture
I have manually deleted previews and thumbnails from within the aperture library to force a rebuilt.
    Nothing works.
    I cannot drag out files
with the exeption I can drag and drop files which have had edits done to it - so the original master has been edited and it's created a modified version.
As I said - previews are enabled and I can also right click and export version or master without issues for any files.
I have latest versions of aperture 3.

    Dan,
can you please clarify  a few points?
    Aperture settings has previews enabled.
Have you enabled "New projects automatically share Previews"?
How is "Share Preview with iLife set"?
I have manually deleted previews and thumbnails from within the aperture library to force a rebuilt.
Has the rebuild worked?  Have you checked in the "Masters" folder, if the previews actually exist for the images, that will not be dragged?
Have you checked each project in question, of the Previews for that project are enabled?
Select each of the the projects in question and ctrl-click (right-click) the gear-icon in the upper right corner of the Library inspector. Check the setting for "Maintain previews for project".
If the previews are disabled in that menu, you cannot drag previews from the library.
    Regards
    Léonie

I would try it on a PC and see if you can format it, then put it back on the Mac and try again. If it's not seen on a PC, then there's the strong likelihood that there's a hardware issue; either the bridge/chip set or the HD itself is dying/dead. There's also the small possibility that the cable is faulty, so I'd try a different cable too.

  • Why can I no longer drag and drop in iMovie 11?

Why can I no longer drag and drop in iMovie 11? This means I can't select transitions, titles, or even move clips within the project. Never had this problem before.

Serious bugs in iM 11 with numerous lock-ups and crashes.  I shouldn't have upgraded -- now I'm pulling out my hair trying to complete a video project with it.
    Apple is losing their way.

  • Drag and drop files to iMovies

i have used a converter to make files from my HDD JVC dvd camera to make them compatible with iMovies but imovies won't let me drag and drop them into a project i have created. Help!
I don't seem to be able to share them with imovies from Quick Time Player either. I am new to mac systmes and finding it really quite tricky to get my head around the software.
    Thanks for your help

Hey Gary, sorry I didn't reply sooner - been very busy.
Yes, I'm able to connect to the server but I get an error message when I drag files over to the remote server. The files show up as being there but they don't load when I try to view them in a browser (online). Will start a new thread to try to figure out what's going on.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Can't drag and drop or import movie clips or ver. 8 projects into iMovie 9

    Hello:
I just installed Leopard (OS X) with iLife and iWork (although I didn't actually install iWork). I can't drag and drop .mov or .dv files into a project. If I "File-->Import-->Movies", all the types I want to import (.mov & .dv) are grayed-out. I created and saved a project with the older version of iMovie (8) and then tried to import it into iMovie 9. The result is a message in the clips panel that says "No matching video. Choose a different options from the Show pop-up menu at the lower left corner." So far, everything I wanted to do is bust. Can somebody help?
    Thanks.
    Etude.

    How?
    easy way:
    • double-click mp4 to open it in QuicktimePlayer.app
    (does it play the video?)
    • File/Export/choose 720p (if optional, if not 480p)
    • import THAT into iMovie using iMovies import routine, proceed …

  • IMovie - Can't drag and drop photos or transitions

Everything was working fine. I was creating movies and loving it. I then ran out of hard drive space and did some cleaning up. I removed old files and cleaned up iMovie. Since then I can't seem to create a new movie. I can't rename the title, drag and drop photos, or put in a transition or title. I can however put in videos that are housed in iPhoto. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to get a few movies done for the holidays.

Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

  • Drag and drop movies out of Aperture?

I imported my movies into Aperture and now I can't get them back out.  I tried to drag and drop them to the desktop but it only creates an 'info' file that's only a few kb large.  I want to move about 300 files out of Aperture and into iMovie where I have much more control.  Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Think I figured out my own problem after screwing with it for a while...  It looks like exporting the MASTER files is what I needed to do.

Simply because you are not posting to the iMovie forum. Post there and find out.

  • Drag and drop photos over video in imovie 08 - need help

my video format is widescreen but when I drag and drop 800x600 pixel photos (actually jpeg slides) over video, imovie adjust the photos by zooming in cropping out the top of bottom of the photos. I have not been able to find any way to change this within imovie. I'd rather not redo all the slides in a widescreen format. Does anyone know a work around or a setting that I'm just overlooking?

you're most welcome, Jon, and it's this board, which 'animates' me to do it that way and this way, and find out the differences..
but, indeed: the 'settings' of a photo should be 'accessible' in both ways..
' cause, in MY workflow in iMHD6 or FCE, I FIRST import the video, and more important: the audio-track, which I 'spice up' with additional footage, as stills...
.. but I've never done that in iM08, which is for my projects still in 'experimental use'...- (I LOVE those picture settings, de-saturating clips etc....), I get used to the many audio-layers in FCE ...
... and: lately, tought some iMovie-beginners (a photographer and a print-designer), with zil background knowledge of any iMovie version, the first steps with iM08... they want to use it to 'glue' some impressions together, they shoot while doing their photo-jobs.. and they were very impressed and excited!... +sooooo easy+ ... yepp, the User Experience IS breathtaking, awesome, groundbraking

  • An mp3 file on my computer will not import to itunes by either the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method.  Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.  My OS is Windows 7.

I purchased an mp3 from a private website on my laptop.  The itunes library i sync ipod to is on my desktop, so i copied the mp3 onto a flash drive and then into my desktop in the Downloads folder and Desktop folder as well as the itunes music folder, 3 places.  I opened itunes on the desktop and read the instructions for importing music that's already in my computer.  Neither the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method works.  I've tried both ways over and over.  Cannot figure out what the problem is.  I do note that the name of the mp3 file doesn't show the .mp3 extension, it appears as simply it's title, Eating Healthy, without any extension at all.  Could the filename be the problem, or do you have any other idea what I'm doing wrong?  My OS is Windows 7, using IE9.  Thanks.
ADDENDUM AFTER READING ANOTHER DISCUSSION HERE:  I have now tried right clicking the song in Windows Explorer and choosing Open With, clicking itunes.  The mp3 plays in itunes but does not add to the library.

I don't have a Recently Added playlist.  However, I discovered that the file I had named Eating Healthy was given the name You Can Enjoy Eating Healthy when it copied to iTunes.  I'm guessing iTunes pulled the full name of the piece from the internet.  Upshot--the mp3 did transfer to iTunes on all 3 tries, but I was looking in my alphabetized list under E, not Y, so I didn't see it there.  Thanks for your help.

  • How do I move photos from iphoto to imovie trailer?  It says just drag and drop but it doesn't take them.

Macbook Pro imovie 11 trailer says to "just drag and drop photos" but it doesn't work????

You cannot put photos in a trailer. They are designed for videos.
However, there is a way around this.
Go to the Project Library view. Select your Trailer. Now, click FILE/CONVERT TO PROJECT.
    Now you can add photos.

  • How can I include a success message in a drag and drop interaction - I don't see this option in the Actions on success options, and cannot figure it out?

How can I include a success message in a drag and drop interaction - I don't see this option in the Actions on success options, and cannot figure it out?

I suspected you used the eye icon on the timeline to hide the message, but that one has no impact whatsoever on the published version. It is only meant to be used for editing reasons on the stage, to hide objects temporarily on a crowded stage. It is confusing, certainly in CP8 where for both instances the same eye icon is used. In previous versions the Properties panel had a checkbox for 'Show in Output', which was IMO much clearer than this eye icon. But of course, that is only my personal opinion.
