IMovie 6HD to IMovie 9

My challenge: I created a 5 minute movie in IMovie6 on my home computer, and was hoping to import it or open it through IMovie 9 which is on my brand new office computer (similar to the principle of opening an older Photoshop or Quark document through a newer version of the software. My goal is to take the existing movie and save it for web purposes.
However, when I opened IMovie 9 to look for a way to access the older file, it seemed as if that was not an option. I was offered folders containing "media" which are all the elements of my already completed video. But importing them was limited to 500 "pieces," and I exceeded that with all my dissolves, clips etc.
Obviously, I am completely new to the IMovie 8 or 9 environment. Can I accomplish this transition, or should I just finish my work in Imovie 6 and prep it for the web from the older home computer?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
-Rick

a 5 minute movie has more 500 pieces......hummm. Never had that problem. I use file import imovie HD, but have never reached the limit. Just so you know it will take the clips, edits to the clips and any transitions turn to cross dissolves. Anything else doesn't come across anyway.

  • How do I install iMovie 6HD on a new iMac

My neighbor just got a brand new iMac (nice!) and I was telling him that iMovie 6 has features that he would find helpful. He purchased iLife 08 when he bought his iMac, but when we download iMovie 6HD it won't let him install. Does anyone know a work around?
    Thanks

We tried that but when the installer is launched it says that iLife 08 must be installed on the machine - and it is. Somehow this machine does not recognize that iLife 08 was preinstalled from the factory. Any thoughts?

  • IMovie 6HD is freezing up with restart required to gain control of iMac G5

Sorry to be so late into the boards here, I know this issue has been dealt with before.... I simply can't find the issue that best speaks to my problem.
The life of my son is chronicled on a series of 8mm video tapes. The tapes start with VERY analog, and move into more reliably reformatted to digital as we upgraded our 8mm camera over time. Any way, I have imported these tapes into my Mac (after converting to digital). As I try to review the digitized movies, the playback stops within seconds of starting, freezes on one frame, while the playhead moves on as if the movie is playing in the background. I don't think it is really playing inthe background, as the iMac is frozen solid iMovie can't be Force Quit, a shutdown is required.
Important to note: this glitch started with iMovie 4, the importing software. I upgraded to 6HD to try to conquer the problem, without success.
The digitized clips are kept on a WD 500GB USB2 external drive. It was reformatted to HFS+ (journaled) before starting the digitizing. I watched each movie clip play as it was being input/recorded onto the harddrive. There is nothing else on the HD but the movie clips.
    I am baffled. I run iMovie 6HD v.6.0.2, OSX 10.4.6 on my 2GHz 20" iMac w/1GB Ram.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for the help!
    Tim

I bought an intermediate digital 8mm cancorder on eBay for $200 or so. A Sony DCR-TRV340. Sony's built-in analog-digital converter let me put my analog tapes into camera, and provided me with digital output. Once I had digital output from a camera, I had digital input for the iMovie App. I no longer needed the vastly poor stand-alone analog-digital converters in the marketplace (Dazzle, for one), that were freezing the iMovie program from the get-go. Although I received NO replies to my question, I managed to solve this one with a little catching-up technological-wise.

  • Old imovie 6HD projects

I upgraded to Snow Leopard and have read posts regarding the issues with imovie 6HD.
I know how to use and create successful NEW imovie 6HD projects. BUT, what do I do about all my old projects that do not playback correctly with SL?
Does anyone out there know any good answers to this? I have many, many projects that I hate to think can no longer be re-burned.
    Thank you!

You may want to have a "dual Boot" system.
You can have 10.5 and 10.6

  • No audio on DV imports to iMovie 8, but yes in iMovie 6HD, need help.

I took my home movies, which had been put on DVD by a service, and using Toast, I exported them to the DV format, which I imported into iMovie 8 on one computer and iMovie 6 on another computer. They work great on the iMovie6 HD computer, but on the iMovie8 computer, I have all the video but NO audio on any clip. I have done the export to DV and import over for each clip and still the same results. What could be happening?

Never assume anything. I found the problem. It is associated with a hardware issue. I am passing my sound through a iogear MiniView Micro USB Hub. The switch is advertised a Mac compatible. It is a basic USB keyboard KVM switch and includes sound switching. My apple speakers are routed through the switch. I use it to switch between my Mac a PC. Don't use the PC much, but I am a MCSE as part of my profession. Normal system sounds and iTunes songs were playing just fine. What kept me from looking at the hardware was the fact the iTunes selections within the iMove app also played correctly, just no sound from the video from iMovie is being passed through to the speakers. This also affected DVD sound playback. I disconnected the speakers from the Mac and the sound works with the internal speaker and the speakers work with a direct connection to the Mac. Now my big question is, within iMovie, how is the sound handled differently with iTunes selections vs. the video sound and DVD playback that it will not play through? One plays, one does not. I will contact iogear on Monday to see if they can give me an answer for this anomaly. If anyone from apple can tell me the technical difference of how the sound is handled I would appreciate the info. I will post iogears answer and close this discussion after speaking with their Tech Support.
    Thanks,

  • IMovie 6HD

I am doing some video work, having to back track to iMovie 6 as 09 and 11 output an unacceptable quality of video, but something is happening with IM 6 that I have never encountered before. When I add a cross dissolve, fade in, fade out, well, any of the transitions, it picks up audio from somee other part of the vide I am editing, not the section just prior and just after the area I am putting the transitions. Anyone have any ideas on why this might be happening and how to fix it?
    Thanks!

    Hi
The real problem - most probably a BUG but few here has the source-code so as we are User that helps Users
    only thing is work-arounds.
    I do FIRST -
    • select the first video-clip and the second one (where in between the transition
    is supposed to go)
    • EXTRACT Audio (Advance menu and down)
    • Now insert the transition
    • Finally - adjust end and start bit of the new Audio-clips produced by the Extraction.
    This works.
Bringing material in from iM'08 or 09 or 11 - is no good way. Import from original
if possibly - direct into iMovie HD6.
    iMovie 1 to HD6 are not compatible with iM'08 or 09 or 11 - at all !

  • IMovie 6HD Crashing

I have an intel iMac and it is my first mac. I'm starting to wonder if I should have gotten this mac as a first one because I am reading about several problems with them and I am experiencing some problems of my own. I can import clips fine into iMovie but when I am editing them the whole program will crash and the clips will go into the trash can and when I pull them out of the trash they are all jumbled up, this has happened to me about 4 times now.
    Any recommendations?

I can import clips fine into
iMovie but when I am editing them the whole program
will crash and the clips will go into the trash can
and when I pull them out of the trash they are all
    jumbled up.
    Any recommendations?
Yes, here's one: You may not be saving the project as often as you should.
Clips don't go into the iMovie trash on their own. When iMovie moves clips to the trash without your asking, it's usually because iMovie crashed before you saved newly-imported clips or clips created by iMovie. Transitions, for example.
Here's what happens: When you import clips/photos/whatever, iMovie adds new files to the Media folder inside the project. (These are the source files for those clips.) When you next save the project, iMovie updates the project file to include a description of those clips, their source files, and all the other editing you've done. The next time you open the project iMovie recognizes those clips and their source files.
Saving updates the project file stored inside the project. This file is the heart of the project. It "remembers" all your edits, the names of imported files, everything.
If you DON'T save and iMovie crashes later, iMovie won't recognize the imported files when the project next opens. iMovie has no record of your importing them, so it doesn't know what they are.
iMovie has to do SOMETHING with the files it doesn't recognize when the project opens, so it moves them to the iMovie Trash. That lets you rescue them — drag them back to the timeline or do whatever you want with them.
For the reason you cited — the clips getting all jumbled — you don't want this problem to occur. Saving avoids the problem.
The same thing occurs, by the way, if the project is saved on an external disk that has an improper disk format. Then iMovie can't (always) save successfully to disk, which leads to a similar situation. Confusion for iMovie. Missing files. Stuff in the iMovie trash.
If you save as you should, yet Movie fails to "remember" the clips and other editing you've done, make sure the disk is formated correctly and that you have no iMovie plug-ins or QuickTime add-ons installed that prevent iMovie from working properly. More here:

Don't let these break-in problems make you overly concerned about your iMac. Odds are excellent that it's perfectly fine. You will learn the tricks you need to know about how to minimize the impact when things misfire — like saving often — and how to maintain your Mac. iMovie isn't perfect — no application is — so expect to see some minor problems. You'll learn how to minimize the impact when they occur.
Every person here has a unique opinion about what to expect from iMovie — and what not to expect. "Long projects are trouble." "Long projects work fine." To some degree, those opinions arise out of our unique editing styles. Some of us edit quite conservatively; others create very complicated projects. Without intending to, I suspect the "heavy editors" create projects that are difficult for iMovie to handle. Slowdowns occur, for example.
My sense is these problems are often related to lots of audio editing. I can't say for sure, for I have never seen those problems in spite of trying to create them. I create both short and long projects, test editing with both a "light" and "heavy" hand, but can't force those problems to occur.
Do the common-sense things. Save often, make backups, make sure the routine maintenance for your iMac gets done, and everything will probably be just fine. When there are problems, search for answers here. Others will have probably seen the same problem.
iMovie is a big, exciting world. Lots to enjoy.

  • Which v of iMovie 6HD is right?

A weird question??? I just noticed when I upgraded to ILife 08 it didn't put in IMovie 07 which i didn't question because of all the comments about iMovie08 but now I have a imovie Hd 6.03 but in previous version on my computer for iMovie there is a imovie Hd 6.04 which doesn't make sense??
Which version should I be using?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I just remembered when I loaded ilife08 it told me it wouldn't load the imove upgrade from iLife08.
Ok.. then I should use v 6.04 rather than 6.03? Guess I questioned why it was in previous folder. I must have downloaded for free??? duhhh

  • Import Problems with PYRO AV Link and IMovie 6HD

I am trying to import video from my JVC VHS Recorder through a PYRO AV Link Converter. The import begins working and then for no reason, and no repeatability, the import stops. The only way I can resume the import is to cycle power to the Converter. Any suggestions on how to get this to work the way it is supposed to?

I have read on ADS Techs web site that there is a Firewire SDK to download from Apple's web site that should fix the problem. Here is the link to the ADS Tech's web site...

  • IMovie 6HD - multiple video formats

Can anyone help me? I have DV from one event on 2 cameras.
The first is standard format DV from a Canon ZR70, the second is HD (16x9) from a Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I would like to use both sources in a single movie. The 5D Mk II video runs continuously over 3 separate 4GB cards of a performance, the ZR70 video is candid, back stage etc that I would like to start with and work in at various points. Is there any way to use both?

first of all, I would 'egalize' both sources.. esp. the material from that SD mk II wouldn't 'fit' into iM...-
use the recommended converter tool *Mpeg Streamclip* to convert the HiDef into dv-stream.
convert the standard material from the ZR into dv-stream and add 'borders' to make it suitable for a widescreen project..
if you want to create a HiDef project, choose Apple Intermediate as Codec and 'blow up' the standard footage to 1920pix resolution.. (=that doesn't 'gain' the quality, but makes the material usable in a HiDef project)
    import resulting dv-streams/AIC movs into a DV/wide project or HD-project ..
just a matter of taste: I like with those 'documentaries' to make the performance in shining colors, and the backstage material b/w.. iMHD6 has such an effect.

  • IMovie 6.0.4 locks up with Mavericks

When I try to split an audio track, iMovoe 6 locks up. It did not do that in the previous OSX, but does so in Mavericks. I know Apple is not supporting iMovie 6HD, but why is this happening and is there any workaround besides not splitting an audio track?

I don't like the "dumbed down" iMovie apps after 6HD. AND I found that by clicking off the waveform in the view dropdown, the problem with spliting an audio file ceases. Thanks anyway.

  • Imovie recognises camcorder but no image/sound

Hi there, I have an old SOny dcr-pc103e camcorder and am trying to get the video clips from dv tapes into iMovie via a firewire cable (4to6 on iMac or 4to9 on MAcbook pro). iMovie recognises the camcorder and controls it (play, stop, rewind...) but there's no sound or image playing, just the plain blue screen. I've been trying to find a solution for a few days now but in vain.
I have iMovie 6HD, '08 (crashes though), '09, and '11. I also have Mountain Lion on both computers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
The sympthome is scarry - as when I got this the faulth was a blown A/D-chip in this specific camera and a TRV-900E
Yes the symptom was exactly same - I was able to control camera - Forward, etc - BUT no picture or audio.
    Expencive repair.
    But first read this
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Huge quality loss in iMove '11

    Hello fellow iMovie users.
Yesterday I upgraded to iLife 11 to get the new iMovie and its "new" audio editing capabilities. I could ofcourse just buy it from Mac App Store, but I am principally against App Store and its strict rules, so I choosed to get it the old way.
Anyway, I liked what i saw. Finally the new iMovie was about as good as the five year old one, and had some neat features like chroma key and cropping.
So I decided to start practicing and create a short video based on some old DV-videos filmed with my Canon MV950 DV-PAL camera.
I imported the footage into iMovie, and noticed some significant quality loss after the import.
And it get worse. After I exported the video, it seems like it is heavily compressed, even if I'm exporting to QuickTime and selects the highest quality possible.
I have some screenshots to show you the differences.
    This is the original DV-footage.
The imported video. Notice the higher compression and the choppy edges.
And this is the exported video. Notice the insanely bad quality, especially in dark areas.
Is there any way to fix this, or do I have go back to iMovie HD?
PS. Sorry if my post is a bit unreadable. I'm from Norway.

    Steve,
While I agree everyone should have owned a HD camera by now, there are a lot of low-end SD cameras that are still being sold today. In this era of our economy, consumers are sensitive to prices; especially low or lower prices.
And unlike the video camcorder boom of the 80s with Sony introducing the Video8 handycam (shoulder mounted camcorder), people today do not video using traditional camcorders. Most either do it through a digital camera, DSLR, iPhone or blogger cameras and are already mostly in an acceptable progressive format. There is nothing wrong with DV style cam. Canon GL-2 and the Panasonic DVX-100 are still commanding such a very high price tag for cameras of older technology and still being repaired goes to show that there are people out there still using it.
If one can convert quality interlaced footage into quality progressive footage, you can use that footage and create good results using iMovie 11. I agree with you and Tom that iMovie 11 captures interlaced footage in full. But what's the use if it can't make a good product in the end that looks like what iMovie 6HD can do and when there are PC software out there including the free Windows Movie Maker that can do this with no problem.
Consumers, unlike some of us, only relate to past software used and are usually benign to the fact of progressive vs interlaced. I have dealt with some mis-informed customers that they believed FULL HD only means 1080p at 60fps; anything else is not. I digress.
With Mac users, they don't necessarily follow the same upgrade frequency as PC users either. Macs generally last a lot longer between upgrades compared to a PC because they don't have to run a barage of virus/spam/anti-malware growing definition files which ultimately slow an otherwise healthy PC down. Macs do not have to worry about this.

  • ILife broken! All started with iMovie problem, any ideas?

I have posted in the iMovie 6HD forums about a problem of it slowing down to a crawl and no one has been able to resolve that issue. I spoke to several employees at the Apple store about the problem & they ran it past a 'Genius' who didn't suggested reinstalling the entire iLife suite.
I did that yesterday and now none of the iLife suite will even open. When you click the dock there is 1 bounce and nothing happens. Dbl click the icon in the finder, it acts like its opening, but nothing happens. What went wrong? I've never had Apple software ever act this way.
I reinstalled the iLife software twice to no avail. Please help!
    Thanks,
    Mark

Did you run the suggested 3-pass Memtest? What did it report? What did the AHT say? If you believe that the hardware is OK, then it is a software issue. If so, and you have done a clean install from the ground up... things are indeed looking bad for you.
I would first run the 3-pass Memtest in single user mode as the instructions outline. This test alone will take several hours... unless your "lucky" enough to have an easily identifiable bad memory block. After that, and assuming the AHT passed everything it is now time to start from scratch. Install the OS and nothing but the OS. Do a clean install, not an archive and install (again, make sure everything is backed up to another drive). Take the new install out for a spin- does everything seem OK? Then start installing apps one at a time. If the iLife apps are your main apps, install them, run all the updates, and then repair permissions. Now how are the iLife apps responding (if at all)? If installing JUST the iLife apps on a clean install of the OS doesn't work, there is a high probability of a hardware problem which means now a technician would need diagnose the hardware problem. If the iLife apps work without any other software installed, then there is a high probability there is a software conflict with another program. Now it is time to install one program at a time trying out the iLife (iMovie) apps until you see which program is causing the conflict.

  • HELP, iDVD 08 cannot find my iMove 6 HD movie

Hated iMovie 08 so I downloaded the iMovie 6 HD. Built my movie in 6 HD and selected share with iDVD. Problem is iDVD cannot see any movie for me to drag it into the movie section so I can burn my DVD. It only seems to recognize the movies I tried to create with the newer iMovie 08.
Surely, there is a way for me to get my iMovie 6HD project into iDVD 08 so I can burn, right? Please help.

How did you share / export your movie to iDvd'08 from iM6?
    Was it like this?
    1. Click Here:
    Like this perhaps?
    2. Click Here:
    3. Or did you use the media/ movies pane within iDvd itself?
    4. There is a 4th approach also (drag and drop of the QT movie to iDvd).
If none of the above works for you, then try a different QT file /movie. If that too fails (and assuming you have at least 25GB's on your main HD/Boot volume) then you need to consider a re-installation of the software. (but I'm hopeful that won't be necessary).
