IMovie auto shortening clips, cant re-size

I convert stills into clips and then use these as transitions. However as I add more transitions and video clips, iMovie keeps shortening all the actual video clips in the project to the point where they are only 1 second if that. If that wasn't bad enough it does not let me re-size them to their original length. In fact just starting a new project and adding a video clip (just one clip in an otherwise empty project) creates a loss of 1 second for me. Can anyone help with this?!? It is starting to look like a waste of $5.

When you tap the photo you should see two yellow circles, one on the start and one on the end of the photo. Drag the end sircle to the right and this will make the photo display longer in the video.
In the video clips, there seems to be some loss due to the transition function.

  • HT1026 Moved iMovie files to an external HD- Now have a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles.

I have foolishly moved my files to an external HD without following this advice. Now I'm left with a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles. Am I seriously going to have to start again or can I move them back somehow? They are from a variety of events and having tried moving some of them back into the imovie events folders using finder, I'm having no luck. Any help?!?

The other thread I found is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1908460&tstart=15
I had some initial success after moving my projects and events on to the ext drive. iMovie reconnected the missing source clips and all of my projects played fine, with music and video intact. Hooray!
However I opened iMovie last night only to discover the source clips missing again. The music and photo stills are fine, it's just the iPhoto video. When I pass the cursor over the ! it tells me it is looking for the files on my HD even though they no longer exist there as I chose the MOVE option, not the COPY.
    Agh!
I also tried the consolidate media option which tells me not all of the clips and events are on my ext drive (funny that they were yesterday) but when I click the option to move them, nothing happens.
Do you still have a copy of the events on your ext drive? Can you try copying them over again?

  • I need to do slow motion, but i have imovie '08 and i cant figure it out. can anyone help???

i cant figure out how to do slow motion in imovie '08 and people are saying that i need to get imovie '06 but i cant find it!!!     HELPPPP! i need slow mo!!!!!

The free program JES Deinterlacer has a slow motion (or fast motion) feature. To use this program you will probably need to look at Help in the JES menu. In the window that opens, click on the Project tab. In the lower right you will see a box labelled "Movie speed". If you want half speed type in 0.5000 (representing 50%). For quarter speed use 0.2500, and so forth. For fast motion, 1.500 represents one and a half times speed and so on.
In iMovie, right-click (or control-click) on the clip that you want to slow down, then select Reveal in Finder. In Finder, open the clip with JES and proceed from there (as I said, you may need to look at Help).
The exported clip can then be reimported to your iMovie Event and used in your Project.
JES Deinterlacer can be downloaded from the home page of the developer Jan E. Schotsman:
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html
It is also downloadable from this Apple site (but it's an earlier version):

  • To save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

to save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

    Yes.
To preserve your projects, all moves should be done from within iMovie, (not the Finder).
First, the external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). FAT32 will not work. You can reformat using Disk Utility if you need to.
When importing video from your camera, you can specify your external drive as the target on the import screen.
For existing projects, you should move using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#move7d66613
There is an error in the instructions where it says to drag the project icon to the icon in the Event Library. You should instead look for your hard drive icon in the Project Library.
You can move events using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6d42c
If you want to move Events, and copy photos, copy music, etc for editing on another Mac, you should use the FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA feature after moving the Project as above.

  • Convert iMovie to QT clip that PC's and Mac's can view

I am not too familiar with QT and its capabilities and have a question.
From one clip of an iMovie of my boys football game I created a 15 sec. QT movie and emailed it to my son. He could open it on his PC but when he sent to his friends who also have PC's neither could open it.
I looked on my QT Pro choices under '>file > export' to convert to some other more PC friendly file but ran into a wall. It lists a number of options but which one do I choose?
All my software is the latest version.

Thanks to all who have responded,
I had planned to create short movie clips for emailing but wanted something quick and easy to do so.
It would be great if I could from iMovie select a clip and share to QT then email the results but it seems that each time I will have to ‘work’ on the clip to prepare it for sharing. I don’t want to go to that much trouble each time so I doubt I will use this means.
I don’t understand why it is not easy to do so. Each time I try to open a QT clip in WMP it says it can’t use the file. I had hoped it would convert the movie to MPV or better if QT would convert to something other than files most PC’s won’t open. There are now four PC users that can’t open the file and one that can. 1 out of 5 is not too impressive.
By the way, I don’t know what Sorenson is.
I create numerous iMovies but never use QT even though I keep buying Pro each system upgrade just in case.
Is there a quicker solution to sharing by email?

  • View clips at full size?

Is there a way to view clips at full size?
I know I can view at 100% in the Viewer but, without resizing the Viewer, I only see a cropped view.
I know I can view full screen, but then I'm seeing something larger than my 1920x1080 soure file, (with interpolated pixels?)
I just want to see the clips at 100%, from edge to edge, when evaluating them during editing.
Am I missing something obvious (not the first time!) or is this not (easily) possible with a single monitor?
    --Darin

    Hey Russ H,
I see the full screen button and the percentage drop down--but as you can see from the little box on the right side of your screen grab you are only seeing a cropped version of the full image. Clicking the full screen button on the bottom (your lower arrow) enlarges to full screen, which is larger than actual pixels on my iMac.
What I'm trying to see is a 1920x1080 pixel image from my 1920x1080 clip.
The cropped image (simply zooming) makes it hard for me to evaluate the overall image in terms of sharpness, for example. The full screen image is adding pixels and is giving a softer look than what is actually in the file.
Not the end of the world. I can choose "100%" and drag the little red box around to get an impressionistic sense of the clip. I can also export the clip and play it in Quicktime to see it in actual pixels. I just figured there must be a way to do it within Final Cut X--but maybe the idea is that I should buy a second monitor.

  • IMovie moving audio clips when transitions are added

iMovie moving audio clips when transitions are addedI have some video clips that need simple fades to black added at the end. However, whenever I add the fade out transition, iMovie does something insane. Instead of the last two seconds of video fading to black and the last two seconds of audio fading out, it seems that a random two seconds of audio from elsewhere in the clip is tacked onto the end and faded. This problem is nuts and I am having no luck finding a solution. Does anyone have one? This has happened with other transitions, but I’d settle for just getting a fade to black to work properly. Is this only a problem with Intel machines?

The problem that you describe has come up frequently on this forum. There are lots of things people have tried, but no solution has been found, other than the workaround of extracting the audio, as Klaus 1 mentions, and manually adjusting the fade out. Some feel that it is an intel machine problem, but that is not clear.
For more information on this issue, try using the search function of this forum, typing in "audio echo with transitions", or some other appropriate search words. You might find of interest the information contained in the following post:

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
(PS Everybody please make noise on this one so apple comes up with a solution.)

  • IMovie - "Convert Entire Clip" reduced clip's frame rate

    Hi,
I was making a video using iMovie.
I wanted to speed up or slow down some clips, so I clicked the "Convert the Entire Clip" button.
After the clips were converted, I noticed that the frame rate of my clips was reduced. It looked lagging in most part of the clips. The original format of the clips is mp4, iMovie converted them to .mov format
Is there a setting to improve/maintain the frame rate during the conversion?
    Thanks.

  • Is Auto Adjust clip lengths a possibility?

Is it possible to auto adjust clip lengths, something like Select All and Auto Adjust to a given length? I goofed around with a variety of clip lengths and would like to revert to the default length without manually adjusting every clip.

I actually liked having a variety of lengths that went with the timing of the music, but the built in zooms and fades didn't work with what I did. Also, it seemed like reducing clips down to 1 second caused the replay to look jumpy.

  • IMovie clips cant be cut because whole project is trashed

I have had a fair amount of experience with iMovie but now when I import from analog video 8 using Sony DCR TRV 460 that creates digital output, the iMovie project seems ok. Then when I try to cut clips the whole project gets trashed. If I get info" on a clip, it has the same size as the whole project. Even clips split at video head are the same. I have no idea what to do.
    Thanks
    Anthony [email protected]

...but when I edit & trash any one clip, the whole lot of dubdivided clips go down with it
Something sounds profoundly wrong with the project. If it were mine, here's what I would try:
    1. Repair permissions. Maybe something is preventing iMovie from working with the project as it should.
    2. After splitting the clips, Select All (to select all the clips), Copy, create a new project, and Paste. iMovie should duplicate that large source file to the new project and place all the clips on the Timeline. Be sure to Copy and Paste all the clips together, otherwise iMovie will duplicate that large source file AGAIN the second time you Paste. If the new project behaves as it should, problem solved.
    3. Export the project to a Full Quality movie, then import that movie to a new iMovie project. If there's a problem with the original imported movie, that might fix it.
    4. Create a new user and try working in iMovie as that user. If there's a conflict with other software -- or a bad third-party plug-in-- that should reveal it. Everything should work okay because that software isn't running.
Otherwise, I think I'd start over with the project. (Which may not help, unfortunately.) I wouldn't want to continue to invest lots of time editing this project only to have it all be wasted when even more major problems occur. Right now, this project is too fragile to rely on.

  • Frustration in Shortening Clips

    Hey everybody!
I am a fairly new Mac user and am just starting to get into the world of iMovie - I am breaking myself in by editing my own recent wedding/honeymoon footage.
So here's the deal: Got a clip(s) of a specific size and am trying to shorten it by "placing my cursor on one end of the clip until it changes" (much like in Garageband) . Except - surprise! No worky! Any thoughts on why this is happening? The cursor just sits there and doesn't change at all!
Note: I just upgraded my system from iLife '05 to '06. It used to work. Leme know what you think! Otherwise, I'm going to have to edit my own wedding video by ussing the crop marks. I swear - I'm gonna be in this computer room 'til I die!
    Thanks for the help!

Ya I think what Sue says is probably what I meant
I still use iMovie version 4, which does support direct trimming, but I nver use it because, at least in version 4, it is not very effective as you can only direct trim the TRUE ends of a media file, not the ends of all clips.
