IMovie clips greyed out

I am making a short film on iMovie, and now, the clips down in the timeline are greyed out and completely invisible. I cannot select or drag the video or audio clips. I can still play what I have so far and it works fine, but I can't add or edit anything now. Please help, I'm in desperate need.

Okay, in case anyone else has the same problem I eventually worked it out. The clips were imported from an external drive which was formatted as case sensitive, whilst the drive the iMovie Events were being stored on was case INsensitive. Since I had files like "IMG01234.mov" and IMG01234.mov", iMovie apparently got confused (this is a clear bug BTW - iMovie should check for this).
In the end I trashed the original imports, split the imported movies into separate Events (the different naming conventions came from different devices, and so by luck were on different days) and it all works now. You could also move them into different directories by naming convention and import like that - the trick is they need to be in different Events in iMovie.
Painful. Really, really painful.

IDVD in iMovie is greyed out?

I'm trying to burn a movie to disc but the option to go to iDVD in iMovie is greyed out? Anyone seen anything like this before??

The answer is simple. Just add a one second jpg to the end of your movie. Simplest is to use a freeze frame from the ending credits (right-click on the frame you want and select Add Freeze Frame). iMovie creates a freeze frame with a 4 second default. You can easily change that to 1 second with the clip adjuster. iMovie is full of these stupid work arounds, you'd think Apple would fix them in an update...but thank God folks are posting them. Good luck.

Movie clips greyed out.

I updated to 2011 and firstly could not see video clips in iPhoto. Downloaded 'Perrin' and i can now view them okay in iPhoto and in Quicktime. However, when i look in iMovie and try to import from iPhoto i am unable to import as many are greyed out.
Any help appreciated

Perian might make files viewable in player but it doesn't make them a format that's editable. Use MPEG Streamclip to convert to a editing format.

Clips greyed out

The clips in the clips pane keep greying out and can't be used. Is there a way to stop this happening or why it keeps happening? thanks

Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
Many possible origins. Most common:
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disc if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disc is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disc (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new account - log into this and re-try
• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK
• Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.3 - is OK

IMovie Import Grey-out

Hi Folks,
I am new to Mac and I just converted AVCHD files using Tipard M2ts Converter. I used to Apple InterMediate Codec(AIC) (*.mov) as the profile:
Once coverted I dropped over the imovie app and it did not import properly. I also Imported from the file tab. The audio came through on imovie, however the video did not. What am I doing wrong?
Also, What is the best format to convert to that would equal or surpass the Full HD 1080 , 1920x1080i, HD?

You will need to check the model of your camera. Some cameras have the ability to record from the red white and yellow cable onto a tape. In this case, you would first record to tape and then import into iMovie over Firewire.
A smaller subset of cameras have the ability to "pass through" a signal from the red white and yellow cable and out the Firewire port without having to record to a tape.
Some cameras also have the ability to read analog tapes and send out DV over firewire.
Check your manual. You can usually find a copy of the manual online if you no longer have the original.

IMovie '11 on 10.6.8 greys out contents of library, so I cannot drag and drop clips to timeline.

This has happened on multiple occasions. I don't know why Apple can't figure out how to create a reliable program. I have been using iMovie for several months now, updated to '11 in April, on OSX 10.6.8, and usually it works fine, but occasionally, out of the blue, all of the clips in my library will be greyed out. I cannot edit them in timeline unless I go to each clip individually and open up the separate editing window, I cannot drag and drop the clips to timeline, I have to manually copy and paste, and I cannot see any of the clips unless I roll over them with my mouse. My free trial of Final Cut Pro just expired and I have a couple of videos that are almost finished and this is extremely frustrating. I have seen others with similar experiences and I'm wondering if there is anything at all I can do about it. Thank you.
P.S. I did try restarting the program about 5 times and restarted my computer. Nothing gives.

Of course, I might have found a fix right after posting this. In case someone else comes along with the same issue...
I closed my MBP cover, and re-opened (this solved a menu bar issue I was also having). I re-opened iMovie, and deleted the project I had started that couldn't be continued. I started a new project, and things seemed to work just fine. So I'm not sure what it was that caused the problem, but so far it seems to be working now. Good luck!

Clip options greyed out in iMovie 11

Just started using iMovie and I downloaded a clip from Youtube and converted it to mp4. All I want to do is make it faster but all of the 'clip' options in the top bar are greyed out so I can't use them. Any help?

You need to select a clip from the Event and drag it to the Project Window. Then select the clip. Then those menu items will be active. You can also get them by right-clicking on the clip.

I go through the imovie 11 procedure for importing and the list of clips (finalised and un-finalised) appears, but always "greyed out" which makes it impossible to create anything. AppleMan Thanks very much for the information, however I could't make it work. I followed your instructions to the letter, in fact I tried every which-way. I created a dedicated file into which I copied and pasted the project from "package contents" but it was still greyed out when I went to retrieve it. I also found that the file size was reduced to only a few Kb. Any further step-by-step instructions would be appreciated as I am obviously doing something wrong. Babowa It appears that in imovie everything has to be "finalised" before it can be used or shared elsewhere in the same way as a disk has to be to be played elsewhere. Funnily enough an MOV file I converted to Mp4 was not greyed out and I was able to import it.... an exercise I am not keen on because of resolution loss during conversion

Split event before clip is greyed out

I can't split event before a clip and I can't merge because it is greyed out. I am highlighting in the events pane. I am completely updated. I have rebooted. I am using imovie8. I am new to this and thought having a mac was going to be so easy. So far, I have had to troubleshoot just above everything I do before getting ahead. It's getting a little old. Can anyone help?

Oops sorry - I'm new to iMovie, except for a short one I did a couple years back from stills. I only take the occasional one with my p&s camera - so it's mp4's - but now I've got a project I want to do for my son and his band. So, another learning curve
Yes I've been trying to split clips in the events browser. And sometimes the "split event" option come up black, but most times it's greyed out. Sometimes I even get the black and greyed-out in different places within the same event. I can't find any logic behind it, it appears to be random.
I haven't come across anything called "the timeline" - so don't know what that is. I searched it just now in iMovie but nothing came up.

As I said - look whether your original file is damaged or not. If not, I wouldn't change it and find out what in your system makes it sound like it's clipping.
Good sound file, with volume maxed out. No need to change anything.
The same song clipped - no chance to repair.

Merge Clips is greyed out

I shot video on Canon 5D, converted to ProRes and imported into FCP 7. Audio was recorded separately on a JVC GY-HM100U (lens shut, so no video footage just sound) and imported into FCP. I've marked in on video and audio clips to merge them, but the merge clips button is greyed out. The clips are in the browser window. I've tried dragging them into the timeline and merging them there. Merge Clips is still greyed out.
Help please!
