IMovie HD Weirdness

I have created two 3-minute movie in iMovie HD. I prefer this interface (where the clips have names) to the new iMovie.
When I try to export at high quality H264, it freezes about 10 seconds in, and I get a still frame for the rest of the movie. This happens with either of the two iMovie projects.
Yesterday, it started doing this when I "Export to Apple TV" even though this option worked the day before.
When I use the Full Quality movie to export a smaller version (such as Apple TV resolution and codec) I get a blank, green screen until I press play. If I pause the movie at any time, it doesn't freeze on the frame I paused on, I get a blank, green screen.
The last time "Export to Apple TV" worked, I got a file about 130 MB.
When I export from the Full Quality version, using exactly the same resolution and codecs as Apple TV, I get a file that's over 1 GB.
I deleted and restored my copy of QuickTime, but that didn't fix the problem. I'm sure the problem is somewhere in iMovie HD.

Thank you, Cat.
If anyone out there is still listening, here's what I typically do. I record live sporting events on my TiVo. These are typically 4 or 5 hours long. I use Roxio's TiVo Transfer to transfer the recordings (sometimes in excess of 20 GB) to my Mac.
I create "highlight reels" from these events, that is, I select only portions of the 4 or 5 hours to be decoded using Pavtube Video Converter. Unfortunately, Pavtube's editor is not frame accurate when selecting in's and out's, so I always add extra time before and after the clip that I want to convert. I always use the same setting: highest quality, 1920x1080 HD, H264.
I then use QuickTime 7 Pro to go into the clips and further refine the exact in and out point that I want.
I've created a couple of 3-minute montages from these highlights using iMovie HD. Because I have so many short clips, I prefer iMovie HD because it maintains the clip names.
There was a point in time when I was able to export the entire project full HD H264, but a couple weeks ago it started freezing up after 20 seconds, and I would only get a still of the last video frame for the remainder of the 3-minute video.
I used "Export to Apple TV" instead, which gave me a 1280x720 movie, but recently that stopped working, too, and only gave me 20 seconds of video and a still frame for the remainder. The only thing I've changed is I upgraded to the new Lion 10.7.4.
I can't be absolutely certain, but since upgrading to 10.7.4, the clips that I created a long time ago and which used to say H264 codec now say libx264. Those clips still play fine. Any new clips that I export from iMovie or from QuickTime itself using the same H264 settings that I have always used now begin with a blank, green screen. The video appears when I hit "play" but the green screen reappears whenever I pause.
This is very frustrating because I've spent a lot of time and energy creating these videos, but it seems that my only option is to export the completed movies at "Full Quality" (which is not full HD and uses a 1440x1080 codec) and then use QuickTime to re-render them to my desired settings, but even QuickTime is now giving me these blank, green screens.
I've repaired permissions, repaired the disk, reset the PRAM, resent the SMC, and deleted preference files, etc. but nothing seems to fix it.

  • IMovie (iDVD) weird functioning

To avoid weird behaving in iMovie and iDVD:
1 Turn off Time Machine automatic back up.
2 Set power management to "Always On" option.

.. another option is, to use a back-up software as Toast 7/8, which allows socalled 'spanning'...
choose Data, drag iM project into Toast.. it will ask you to insert DVDs.. and more DVDs.. as tilman stated, an iM project contains 13GB per hour project length plus the many hours you have imported...
you need Toast to re-import such a disk collection, to re-assemble the many files of an iM project...
.. it is mostly recommended to spend 100$ for some external, firewire connected harddrive (format to hfs BEFORE use...) ... then, it's simply drag'n drop ...

  • IMovie creates weird frame flickering on export only -- please help!!

Hello iMovie experts.. Need your advise!!!!!
I've been using iMovie 11 for some time now... Had no issues... All of a sudden a few days ago,
after I already burnt a disk, i noticed blinking in the clip where I had a 'Dream' video effect...
I opened the exported mov file, and the blinking is there.... So I went to the project, no issues, - the clip that
has the effect plays good, no 'flickering'..
As soon as I export it -- on the clip where i apply a video effect, every second or so I see a black frame, or the blurred frame, or a frame as if the
effect wasn’t applied to that clip.......
I tried exporting via almost everything... Export Movie, Export to QuickTime (no compressions, mp4, h264, etc), ... same thing
is happening over and over...  I tried removing the Preference file from User\Library\Preferences file, but it did not help..
I also tried duplicating a project. What happened was, the problem did not go away, but on top of that, it created about
10 minutes of black video towards the end of the movie...... ?!?!?!?!?!
I also removed Flip4Mac and Divx components... no luck...
Can anyone suggest anything please??  thanks!
    Running latest Snow Leopard update...

You know, i optimized a video once, and it was very jerky when it played at about 40% speed (slow-motion), vs. when I import non-optimized..
I dont want to jump the gun yet, as the below doesnt really make sense, at least to me, BUT......
What I noticed is that the flickering of the clips with applied effects only happens when there an opening
transition in the very beginning of the project..  I placed a "fade-in" transition in the beginning so that the video  fades in as it starts....  As soon as i removed it.. it exports fine, no flickering, no nothing, back to normal..
.... I also tried a few new small projects with and without the transition in the beginning and I would get the same pattern after export:  with a trans in the beginning of the clip with video effect, -- it would blink after being exported.. As soon as beginning trans removed -- back to normal..    I know... i doesnt make sense...
I wonder if you can produce this:
[fade in trans] [normal clip] [clip with Dream effect] [some other trans] [clip with some other Effect]
    and
[normal clip] [clip with Dream effect] [some other trans] [clip with some other Effect]
Thoughts??  I am scratching my head now!

  • IMovie crash - weirdly unresponsive

Hello, I have been using iMovie for the first time for a school project, and all was working perfectly until it suddenly crashed and restarted my mac. Now when I open it I can no longer open my project, import media or create a new project ("The operation could not be completed."). I've tried restarting, force quitting, and deleting preferences. My mac is a mid 2012 13" macbook pro. I really need to finish this assignment, please help! Thanks

You could always try re-downloading iMovie from the Mac App Store. You'll need to move the current application out of the Applications folder, go to your Purchases tab in the MAS and redownload iMovie. I don't know that the application itself is corrupt, but it's worth a try.

  • Clips not saving

I have been working on a movie project and I saved my work many times. Before I closed the application I saved it again to my desktop just be on the safe side. When I opend Imovie to continue work on my project, the file could not open some of my clips. Most of my clips actually. A pop up message came up. Does anyone know why my clips were not saving? And is it possible to save a clip after its been cropped in a different location for future use?

I'm not clear on exactly what happened. What did the pop-up message say? What do you mean by "the file could not open some of your clips?" Were they not in the project at all, or would they just not play? Does this happen with other projects, or isolated to this one project? Have you updated or installed any software since saving your project? How much free disk space do you have? Have you noticed any strange happenings on non-iMovie projects? Are you running compatible versions of iLife software? If you can answer those questions you might get some more meaningful responses.
In any event, when iMovie acts weirdly it is oft recommended to do the following: 1) close iMovie and trash the file named com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new file upon relaunch. 2) Do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac hard disk.
Sometimes permissions get out of whack, particularly if you have downloaded any new software or done any upgrading. Some people have complained of problems with Quicktime upgrades.
Make sure that you have enough free disk space for iMovie to operate, 10-15GB. If your project was initially located on an external hard disk, make sure that the external disk is formatted for Apple. Should be MAC OS Extended or MAC OS Extended (Journaled). (But if you reformat, store all of your data on that disk onto another disk, because reformatting will erase all the data on the disk.)
You might need some computer maintenance or a disk repair (done from your MAC CD startup disks.

  • Weird error from iMovie 9.0.2 - Quartz Extreme required - what gives?

I got this weird error message from iMovie 9.0.2 today ...
    "Quartz Extreme required.
iMovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme. One or more of your graphics cards does not support Quartz Extreme.
    [Quit]"
What is going on here? I have an Intel i5 Quad Core iMac with 16GB of RAM and 1.5TB free on my drive. The graphics card in this iMac has 1GB of VRAM (ATI Radeon HD 5750) so I thought it could handle pretty much anything I throw at it.
I had a movie of my daughter's school play (about 1.5 hours) which I edited in iMovie today and then selected the Menu to finalize the Project.
SInce it was taking a few hours, I left the machine to run and do its thing.
When I got back, I found that iMovie had shut down and I had the above error message on my screen.
I bought this machine so that I could do some amateur video editing ... and this is my first attempt. Not happy with this result!
Any advice/suggestions/guidance on what is going on here?
    Thanks

    CH,
Not I do not have a colition to this, but it has not happened to me in a while.
Good Luck with this and hope someone chimes in to help you.

  • IMovie is behaving weird, can I uninstall it and install it back again?

The app iMovie on my Macbook Pro is acting weird. There is even footage that is gone from my library I just don't know where it went. So, I am planning on uninstall ing the app and installing it back again. Do you think that will solve the problem even though I will lose some projects I still have.

You don't lose any Projects nor Events on re-installing iMovie.
but before doing that, give it a slap on the back head by erasing its pref-files:
    Quit iMovie
in Finder, hold the alt-key, click on 'go to ' in the menu bar, select Library, open Preferences, find and trash com.iMovieApp.plist
look, if iMovie gets back to normal..............

  • Imovie HD acting weird; won't show finished movie in the big screen

My Imovie HD has started acting totally weird. First off, it wouldn't show finished movie projects in the large viewing screen. Then there were clips that no longer showed up. Sometimes I can hear the sound of a clip, but not see it. I tried compressing a project in quicktime to publish it on the Web and I got an error. Then the imovie started acting weird. Now when I open it, it just closes on its own.
I've run disk utility and no problems were found. I also tried Tech Tool. And I couldn't find the plist file for imovie at all to delete it. I've also emptied the cache files. HELP!

There is probably an app. malfunction. You should have a certified Apple salesman look at it. Other than that, i am not sure what to do.

You can't use iMovie to create a video DVD - for that you need iDVD:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

You can find the serial number either in About this Mc in the Menu bar under the , or it should be on a sticker under the foot of the machine.
If you have the install discs, try booting from them, holding down the c key and then using Disk Utility to check the drive.
You can also boot into Safe mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
       1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
       2. Press the power button.
       3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
       4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
    Please post back with results,
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

  • Weird Sound in iMovie

When i edit/save a movie i see a red line that makes a wierd chirping sound. How do I get rid of it?

    Hi malagoli:
    Welcome to discussions!
I think the first thing I would try is deleting the imovie preference file.
Locate a file named com.apple.imovie.plist and get rid of it. Then empty the trash, run a permissions repair with disk utility and restart. The files you need to delete are found in:
    /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
I think I would do the same for the iDVD preference files, too.

  • Marker Import Weirdness iMovie to DVDSP

    Hi,
For Some Strange Reason, when I drag an imported video asset created with iMovie 3.0.3 that contains markers into a blank chapter index menu in DVDSP 3, the first scene always gets named "Start". I did not name this first marker "Start" in iMovie, yet DVDSP insists on renaming it. The marker is at the very beginning of the iMovie video. All other markers are correctly named. I know I can rename the scenes/markers, but this is irritating.

Ok, now I know why. From the manual:
DVD Studio Pro automatically adds the first marker to all tracks. It is named “Start” when the track is created by dragging a video asset to the Menu Editor. (When the asset is dragged to the Track Editor, the name is based on the marker naming settings in the Track pane of DVD Studio Pro Preferences.) When you create a chapter index menu, the first button linked to a marker is linked to the “Start” marker set by DVD Studio Pro. Since this marker is at the start of the track, pressing this button plays the track from its beginning. If the marker names appear on your chapter index menu’s buttons, you may want to edit this button’s text to better describe its function.

  • Weird "white frame" in iMovie?

Hi. Anyone ever have a short "white frame" (like 0.5 or less of a second) show up unexpectedly between clips? Can't seem to get rid of it - and it totally interrupts the "flow" of my iMovie.

This may seem like a dumb question, but it has rendered my iMovie useless. Somehow, my iMovie screen got minimized and I can't see it. et me explain. I open iMovie, the menu bar is there. If I select an opion such as show fonts, or open new project, I get the menu screens for that. However, I don't see the workspace. I have ried playing aound with expose or spaces as it seems iMovie is hidden somewhere, but nothing seems to work to get it back. I tried recovering an older version, but that didn-t work.
thanks for any help you cn provide.

All I can suggest is the standard troubleshooting steps in order.
Restart your iPod: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset your iPod: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Restore your iPod: Restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
