Imovie is messing up

I am working on a Tribute video for my 31 year old dear brother who passed away 2 years ago. I have almost 2 hours worth of clippings of home videos i am trying to embed into many pictures in another project that is already 1 and a half hours long. I clipped the original home videos whenever i imported them into imovie with just the parts of the video that have my brother in them. When I copy and paste the videos into the project that has all of the pictures, the videos are all messed up and are the wrong clippings, as if the clippings i made were other parts of the video, but still contain the right amt of time the original clips of my brother were. Does anyone know how this could possibly be fixed?

We sort of get the idea although it's not over clear exactly what you did, many thanx for leaving us with your findings, It would be great to get a little more detail though.

  • Still Pictures in imovie are messed up

I am almost ready to publish my imovie of still pictures. However when I preview the imovie the stills in the viewer do not match up to the stills under the curser? Some of the pictures never show up at all. Any advice would be helpful.

I notice that you have not had the question answered as yet. I have the same sort of problem. What's shown in the viewer doesn't match what is showing in the preview screen.
It was all going fine until I added in just one more transition and then it seemed to all get messed up.
I'm using iMovie 08, I have about 620 still slides and two short (15 sec and 49 sec video clips). I have not yet added audio. And I have had this problem three times. Each time I have gone back to the start and redone the project. Each time the playback seems to be disengaged from the thumbnails and I get hundreds of edited thumbnails added at the end of the project (though the thumbnail shows as the one slide repeated hundreds of times).
Actually, the first few slides run true but then a slide is missing from the viewer (the thumbnails) yet it's showing correctly on the right hand pre-view screen. I've tried the obvious things like deleting the transition, deleting the slide where the problem first seems to occur but tht does not fix it.
I also seem to have another mess at the end of my project where all the slides that I have edited (eg the Ken Burns effect) have some how inserted themselves. But they show up in the thumbnails as the one slide repeated many times. Yet when I run the cursor over them the edited, original, slide is shown in the preview screen.
And one final observation. When I run the project in full screen playback it seems to run as I originally wanted it to....except that I can no longer edit it.
    Any suggestions from anybody?

  • IMovie is Messed Up

Just got my new MacBook last week. Was working with iMovie (trying to import some slideshows saved as QuickTime files) when it just crashed and burned. I downloaded and installed the latest updates for iMovie '08, to no avail. When I click on iMovie, all I get is a blank gray screen, no menu bar at top or ANYTHING!
    Advice needed!

    What should I try next?
If it were me having the problem, I would likely assume the application's internals (hopefully only the plist/Events list map was corrupted) during the crash. Would start by deleting iMovie "plist" and would work my way up to deletion and re-installation of the entire iLife '08 suite (plus updates) if needs be. iMovie application may simply be stuck in an endless loop attempting to initialize itself during opening. On the other hand, the application itself may have been corrupted during your crash.

  • IMovie messing up contrast

    Hey everyone
Whenever I put any video file into iMovie it messes up the contrast on the video and adjust the contrast manually in the "Video FX" option does nothing. iMovie will have the little red bar signaling that it's rendering the video but when it's done the video still looks exactly the same.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi
BTW - Did You calibrate Your Mac monitor ? (just a shoot in the dark)
I would delete iMovie pref file - but also read
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named. com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

  • How can I save different versions in iMovie 11 (plus angry rant)

    Sigh.
My fiancee is sitting in front of the computer crying because iMove just messed up her project.  The project that was basically done.  The project she has to hand in tomorrow morning (it is midnight right now).
Who knows what happened.  Things apparently just jumped around and no amount of undoing is getting her back to where she wants to be (apparently she used undo, then tried to fix things, then tried to undo again).
    Which leads me to:
*** was Apple thinking when they removed the ability to save a file?  Seriously!  Both of us are experienced computer users and both of us are in the (very vital) habit of saving multiple versions of a file.  We don't save a version every 10 seconds, and we don't save a version for every insignificant change.  But we do save versions whenever we feel we have hit a milestone.  And we would have done exactly that had there been some obvious way to do it in iMovie.
OSX Lion (the first version of OSX that desperately makes me want to downgrade) is supposed to autosave so that you don't have to.  But iMove 11 apparently cannot do even this simple thing. As far as I can tell you work on your project and it is the *only* version of this project you can ever work on.  If you make a change, you can either:
    live with it
    or
linearly undo as long as you have not quit the program.  Heaven forbid that it crashes or (like it just did right now) stops playing back audio and you have to quit and restart.
There must be a way of saving different versions of your project so that you aren't messing with your one and only precious copy every time you make an edit.  Please tell me there is.  Or how do I get to the autosaved versions?  It is probably too late for her now (she has to redo most of the project to get the audio to line up again) but for future reference we could use some help.
Sigh.  Now I have to go help her.  I feel so bad for her and I pretty much want to chuck the freaking computer through Apple's living room window right now.

    Sorry for your frustration.
Here are two tips that may help in the future.
To save a version, use FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3a61c0ec
You might also consider using Time Machine backups.

  • Moving Aperture libraries while keeping iMovie project video links intact.

I am in the process of moving my Aperture libraries off my internal drive to an external drive.  The problem I found is that by do so, my iMovie projects that were using video clips from the Aperture libraries now have broken source links.  I have all my video clips managd by Aperture, not referenced.
The way I moved the libraries was simply drap the library files to the new desitination.  I can see the original clips in iMovie's event library after the move and thumbnails are generated; but my project links are not updated.
My question is that is there a proper way doing this correctly so my iMovie project links are still intact after the move?  Thank you in advance for your helps.

I have exactly the same question as the OP. I've been into digital photography for a while, and have been using Aperture for a short time, but have JUST started to shoot some video for fun. Video goes into my Aperture library, but I'm just using iMovie to mess around with the video. I export short clips to YouTube for the family to view. Eventually, I'll put these projects on DVDs and I know I'll have to delete them from the Aperture library for space reasons.
How are people handling this? Should I just move the video directly to an external hard drive, for example?
    Thanks.

  • Best datafile management practices for iMovie

I work across two different machines (my desktop and my laptop) on iMovie Projects.  My desktop has nearly all of my video stored on a 6TB external drive, but when I travel and want to bring along a project with me on a  portable 2 TB drive.  And then when I return, I want to be able to move the updated project back to my desktop and the 6 TB drive.
I will want to also be able to bring along all of the related event files so I can add or change video content, if need be.
One of the problems is variious resources tend to disappear (music from my iTunes libary and video clips and or pictures from Aperture)
So my question is what is the best approach to this problem.
    Suggestions?

You are asking really good questions.

Is file management using Final Cut Pro any easier?  How large is the learning curve for Final Cut Pro?
File Management is quite similar in Final Cut Pro X, but you have additional options. The paradigm of Events, Projects, and Archives is the same. You have more ability to use keywords, and more ways to search through your events. You can also rename clips for your convenience. You can't rename clips in iMovie without messing up the date metadata.
The learning curve is fairly large for Final Cut Pro. The basic interface is similar to iMovie, but at every stage you have many options and much more control. At minimum, you would want to get a good book on FCP, and you might invest in some of the video training that is available from Ripple Training or Larry Jordan.
If all you need is to make simple movies of 25 minutes or less, iMovie may be plenty. If you need more, the Final Cut Pro X is a great product.
It might be analogous to going from iPhoto to Aperture and Photoshop. It is doable, but some training helps.
Here are some of the key differences...
    1) iMovie uses Apple Intermediate Codec as the editing codec. Final Cut Pro uses ProRes 422 as the editing codec. (There are also more exotic flavors like ProRes 444, for the times when you need alpha channel in your video).
Apple Intermediate Codec is OK for iMovie, because in iMovie, you will only render a clip once, and the render is done when you Share your project.  Final Cut Pro is capable of making much longer movies with complex effects. You might do multiple renders on a clip, so it is important to have a codec that maintains high fidelity to the original even through multiple renders. ProRes 422 that codec. In addition, Apple Intermediate Codec uses a 4-2-0 colorspace while ProRes uses a 4-2-2 colorspace. I am not an engineer, but this means potentially more accuracy and more colors available.
    2) Final Cut Pro makes it easy to edit with multiple camera angles. Think of a rock video where there is a music track and you cut seamlessly between a wide angle shot, the lead guitar, the singer, and the drummer. This is easy in FCP. It is possible in iMovie, but only with a lot of manual effort.
    3) You have a lot more control over color managment in FCP.
    4) You have a lot more control over audio in FCP. In addition to built in sound editing capablilities, you have all the synthesizers from Logic Pro available to you as well.
    5) In your editing, you have a lot more capability in FCP.
    6) In essence, you can do everything you can do in iMovie, but a lot more, and with a lot more control.
    7) In addition, Final Cut Pro will import your iMovie Project and Events, if you like, and you can contiue editing them in FCP. However, you can contimue to edit them in iMovie as well. And if you do it correctly, it does not take up much more space on your hard drive. In other words, you will have a Final Cut event with a hard link to your physical clips, and you will have an iMovie event with a hard link to the same physical clips. It will look like 2 separate events, but you only use up the space of one event. The only downside of doing this is that you will be editing in Apple INtermdiate Codec.
    8) You can do simple greenscreen in iMovie. In FCP you have full control over making a compositing key and using it as you like.
    9) You can do simple speed changes in iMovie (fast or slow motion). In FCP, you have infinite control over the speed changes and you can select from 4 different modes of blending the frames so they look smooth.
I could go on and on, but that should give you an idea.
Here is the Help manual for FCP, if you want to browse around.

  • IMovie changes video size when importing its own exported projects

How can I control aspect ratio on imports - or simply get iMovie to import .mov files at their current and correct aspect ratio and size, as settings indicate? iMovie is messing with them.
I'm re-importing a lot of finished, exported iMovie files because a hard drive crash resulted in the loss of the original projects. As I'm doing this, I notice that these same Quicktime .mov files created by iMovie get squashed and stretched when imported as new events. Despite the fact that I'm using the setting "Full - Original Size."
When I import using the setting "Large - 960 x 540" the aspect ratio is correct, but the frames are reduced in size.
When I import the same videos by first putting them in iPhoto, and then accessing them through "iPhoto Videos" they are perfectly copied, with correct aspect ratio. But I don't want to have to keep taking this extra step.
    Thank you!

stage6 files use DivX for encoding.. a HighQuality produced iMovie project could look as good as the stuff there.. allthough, many 'videos' I've seen there are NOT done with a 200$-cheapo-consumer cam.. you can teach Quicktime, and therefore iM to export with that codec... install divx-plug-ins..
to edit natively non-dv-streams, only alternatives are FCpro (=$$$$) or QTpro (=less convenient).. plus a few 'exotic' apps, as the free Mpeg Streamclip, which allows some 'raw' editing of mpegs etc. ...-
    but..
if your input is from camcorders, the 'raw' footage is interlaced and low-res, compared to what you see normally on a computer's screen..
if your input is e.g. computer generated (CGI), use for export Apple Intermediate Codec, which is the HiDef codec of iMHD6 .. and probably, use a setting of a higher res, as 1080..
if your input is screengrabs, they don't match the TV-resolutions, iM offers, nor do they match the framerates...
    so, what source, what delivery...?

  • Importing WITHOUT copying/moving?

Is it possible to import existing video files without iMovie '08 copying or moving the video - I just want it to reference the existing footage in place? These are simple Quicktime DV files; I know it can play them without a transcode, but I don't want it to copy gigabytes, wasting time and space.
It seems to do this for any video in your iPhoto library, that stays in the iPhoto lib - why can't it do this for other random footage?
Among other things, I want to use the excellent video browsing facilities in the new iMovie just as a viewer for the family's video archive, it will be fantastic for this, but I don't want to have to duplicate hundreds of gigabytes of video into an iMovie library for no reason.

    Problem:
iMovie only lets you move or copy existing video clips into iMovie's Events folder.
    Solution:
    1. Quit iMovie
    2. Create a folder for each event you wish to import in the "iMovie Events" folder. (Either in your home directory or in the root of your external disk!).
    For example: /Volumes/BigVideoDisk/iMovie Events/Ski Trip/
    3. Create aliases for the clips you want to import into your event's folder. You can do this quickly by selecting all the existing clips and cmd-alt-dragging them into the appropriate event folder.
    4. Start iMovie
    Caveats:
    - messing around in application controlled directories is not a great idea
    - deleting the original clips will of course delete them from iMovie, but iMovie won't notice until you actually try to use the clip.
    Pleas to apple:
    1. please add a button to "use existing clips, where they are"
    2. please let the user define where the clip-libraries are located (ie: not just ~/Movies and at the top of an external disk)

  • Which codec do you use?

So I figured I asked the community and get a feel of which codec(for Quicktime) you use when rendering from Shake and why?
I'm trying to find a nice balance between quality and size for importing Quicktime movie into iMovie. It seems I can't get the right quality in iMovie but maybe it's because iMovie is messing with my original movie.
    Thx.

Sorry I wasn't as specific. I am using sequence TIFF images which are 720x480 or less depending as input and want to ultimately build something with iDVD. I have been using the 8-bit uncompressed codec to keep as much quality as possible but I was just curious what other people use when doing their work with Shake.
As for using iMovie, I could do everything in Shake including the audio sequences but it's so much easier to line up audio clips in iMovie. I may resort to this as iMovie keeps murdering my resolution. I just didn't feel like dropping $170 on FCE or even more on FCS which is why I was using iMovie to build my movie. Based on a lot of investigation earlier this year, I could do all the work I wanted in Shake without needing FCE and just output to iMovie 09. I'm just a hobbyist.
    Thx.

  • Audio too low for PCs

Our exported iMovie to iDVD 5 has almost no volume on a PC.
So low can barely hear it.
Is there any way to increase the volume of the iMovie without messing up portions of the video/audio?
Just increase the total volume, not individual clips?
Message was edited by: René O'Deay

plays well on my mac, but not my sister's. volume too low on hers.
And hers won't play the DVD+RW, only the DVD-R.
And somehow she messed up the audio tracks, so they are no longer separated. Do not know how she did that.
Sister has been using my computer to edit this, as hers has OSX 10.3.9 Jaguar (?) and iMovie 3, and no superdrive like mine. (it's an older Powerbook G4, with less RAM and less )
She is dyslexic and has lots of problems doing things right, or learning new apps.
But she made this work, except the volume problem.

  • -34506 Error is Driving Me Potty

    Hi
For weeks now I've been trying to burn an iDVD project and getting the dreaded -34506 Error.
Originally the project had a main movie, two additional movies and two slideshows, and by process of elimination I've boiled it down to one of the additional movies that's causing the error.
I've scoured this Forum and taken into account all the advice re -34506 and nothing works for me.
The iMovie project is only 575MB and less than 3min long.
    There are no chapter markers.
I've tried both Best Performance and Best Quality
I've tried creating a new iDVD project, using the default theme.
    I'm on iDVD 6.0.3, OS 10.4.8, Quicktime Pro 7.1.3
    I've tried
    dropping in the iMovie file
sharing the iMovie file as a Quicktime dv file and dropping that in
saving the Quicktime file as a mov file and dropping that in
    all give the same error.
The only thing different from the many iMovies I've created is that I used a third party transition - I thought maybe that could that be my problem?
So I tried dropping the Quicktime dv file into a new iMovie project (so in effect the transitions are embedded in a single movie clip) and sharing that back out to iDVD but still get the same error.
Could there still be some encoding from the third party transition in the Quicktime file? If so is there anything I can do to make it work - I need those transitions.
I've been spending way too much time on this and my brain's full, would be glad of advice.

Sorry it took me so long to get to this forum, and thanks Sue for pointing me this way.
Happily, the problem was resolved - it appears to have been a permission problem. Although it probably bores most people, please allow me to explain what an iMovie plug-in can, and cannot do.
Basically, duing a rendering pass (i.e. when you press 'Apply') iMovie calls the plug-in for each frame of the clip. It passes the plug-in an image (the current frame), and expects an image of the same size passed back after processing is done. That's it. A plug-in can modify the image, but nothing else. A plug-in can't drop a frame, or add a frame, or change the frame's resolution. It can't access anything in the clip beyond the current frame, and a few simple settings. A plug-in certainly can't write to the clip itself.
Even though this severely limits what a plug-in can do, it also simplifies debugging. If, like in this example, iDVD pops up an error, we can be quite sure that it's not the plug-in, because a) iDVD does not call the plug-in (the plug-in can only be called from iMovie), and b) since plug-ins can't write to disk, and don't have access to the clip, there is no way the plug-in has messed up the clip's source data.
If a permission problem crops up, there are many possible reasons. Sometimes, the source material was copied from an archival CD burned with PC software (that, if you are unlucky, has some very funky permission codes set). Most of the time, though, iMovie simply messes up when it get confused (believe me, this happens a lot, in iMovie 5 ususally after you have played with audio settings). In that event it doesn't really matter if you applied a transition, an effect, or a title - the permissions get shot, and you need to repair them. What is a bit disconcerting, though, is the fact that permission problems are difficult to spot. 'Error -34506' certainly wasn't in our data base, even though other permission-related error numbers are.
Finally, a short 'hi again' to Klaus1. Thank you for providing feedback on this issue. If you allow me a small correction to your comment: Our plug-ins do work with iMovie 6. They do not work with Intel-based Macs. Some of our plug-ins do not work well with Tiger. Luckily, you can test that before you buy them.
Good night everyone, and have a nice sunday!

  • Why is the audio messed up when I import a trimmed video from my iPhone to iMovie?

    Hi,
well i've been having this problem and it would be great if somebody could help me with it. So I imported a clip from my iPhone 4S to my iMac in iMovie and the audio is all messed up. It's way to fast and at the end of the clip there's no sound at all. I realised that it only happens to clips that I've trimmed on my iPhone. The clips work perfectly fine on my phone but like I said when I import them to iMovie the audio doesn't work properly. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this. Thanks

Thank you for your reply. However, I was hoping to avoid manually configuring the account on Mail. I would like to know if there is a way to make my iPhone do the configuration. For example, on Mail if I go to File>Import Mailboxes... I would be able to do it, except iPhone's bluetooth does not support data sharing, therefore this method won't work. Is there another way that I can actually import the email account information from my iPhone to my Mac?
    Thank you
