IMovie quits while copying projects and events to an external HD. Any ideas?

Here is my problem: i was running out of disk space and wanted to move my projects and events to a new, external WD hard drive. I followed to normal procedure and moved the projects within iMovie 11 to the new (meanwhile connected and displayed) WD drive. I selected to copy both, projects and events to this drive and iMovie started copying. After a while the prog crashed. Does anyone have an idea what else I can do? Is this a bug of iMovie?

I found the solution and just want to share with you...
1. I closed iMovie
2. I renamed my existing root folder projects and events by adding a '_' at the beginning of the folder name.
3. I copied all my content (projects and events) within the finder and not as normally recommended within iMovie from the internal to the new external hard drive.
4. When starting iMovie again the newly copied folder are recognized and it takes a while (depending of the amount of clips and projects) until iMovie is available after this start.
5. The events and projects are now shown in the new external harddrive and all files are accesible. Also all clips from the events are correctly linked in the projects.
I have tried this way since the normal decribed routine did not work on my iMac (iMovie crashed every time).

  • Imovie crashing when copying Projects and Events to external

This is driving me crazy. Imovie keeps crashing when I try and copy some of my projects and events to the external from within iMovie. I can copy the project and event files separately as a work-around, but it's taking me forever. These are very short movies, less than 3 minutes, and the original footage is from a Kodak zi6. I've already copied more than 40, and all went well. Now it keeps crashing.
Why can't I just copy from the Finder. It would be a LOT faster. I'd like to keep the projects/ events linked so that I can edit in the future, if necessary.
External: Firewire, Guid Partition Table, and Mac OS extended (journaled). Lots of free room on both drives.

  • How can I copy projects and events to an external hard drive from iMovie 10?

I have created a project in iMovie 10, which I would now like to share with a colleague, in a form in which he can edit just like I can.  I do not see a way to copt projects and events to an external hard drive,  the way I could from previous versions of iMovie. Any suggestions?

You can copy an iMovie 10 library to an external volume (HD, Thumb drive etc.) with the Finder so as to share it with a colleague.   You may find the following link helpful:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Before copying the library you have to make sure that all media is in the library.  Media from iTunes, iPhoto and similar are by default linked to my iMovie and not copied to the library.  To resolve this you may need to consolidate media before you copy the library.  See for details:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov882dee351
Note that your colleague has to be using the same version of iMovie.  Even different minor updates may cause problems.
    I hope this helps.

  • I want to move imovie projects and events to an external hard drive.  Where is the "move" command?

I want to move completed imovie projects and events to my external hard drive.  I see in the "help" section that I should "move project & event" and they indicate that their should be such a selection.  I highlight the project I want to move and attempt to drag it to my external HD but it won't stay.  I never see "move project & event".  I've tried holding the "command" key down while dragging and that doesn't work either.  Help ...

    Hi
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

I have just updated to Final Cut Pro 10.1.4 - I have updated Projects and Events on my external hard drives (off the File menu). It's says under several projects 'missing file' - but they were all there working fine before I updated. I am working off 2 external drives - not sure if that would make a difference.

After the update each seperate connected drive should now have a seperate Library.
The older Projects and Events folders would have to be at the top level of those drives go be seen and updated.
Were all the necessary Projects and Events in the corrrct place before updating?

  • IMovie 10: Lost all projects and events when upgrading

When I opened iMovie 10 the first time, it starting updating thumbnails. At some stage it got stuck on a certain event. After have seen the rainbow circle for a few hours and it was getting nowhere, I force quit the application. When I opened it the next time, both the 'events' folder and the 'project' folder are empty. I can see that all projects and events are still there in the finder folder, but I cannot import them into iMovie. Does anybody know what to do?

The events and projects from older versions have to be updated. You should a dialog about this when you first launch the application.  You can also update from the File menu.

  • How do I save my imovie '09 project and events to an external drive? I tried to drag it but it won't accept it?

I've been able to save/move things to my Western Digital Passpor beforet but this time it won't let me drag the project or event to the external drive.
Tons of space left on the drive. The prioject is not finished. Do I have to optimize it or something? Thanks for all replies.

external drives come out-of-the-box 'Windows'/fat32 formatted.
no prob for a Mac - except for iMovie.
use the Disk-Utility in your Apps/Utilities folder to format to 'Mac'.-

  • Transferring projects and events to new external drive

I have been using a 2 TB external hard drive to create both personal and commercial videos using iMovie '11. Due to space limitations on the 2 TB drive, I now want to transfer the commercial video projects and events to a new 1 TB external hard drive. I started by copying one project (and associated events). I then copied a second project that uses clips from the same events as the first project. As a result, I now have two copies of the events--one copy associated with project 1 and a second copy associated with project 2. Consequently, the 1 TB hard drive is filling up fast with twice as many events as I originally had before starting the transfer process. I also have a third related commercial project that I want to transfer to the new drive, but I'm afraid I'm going to fill up the drive sooner than I expected with a third set of events. Ugh!
In effect, I want to move multiple related projects that use clips from the same events from one drive to another without losing associativity and without creating extraneous events. I would appreciate any help.

    Hi
Yes there are somer IMPORTANT steps to take and not to take.
    • DO NOT - Move or alter any folder named iMovie Events or iMovie Projects on Desktop/Finder.
If You do - iMovie get's confused and it might not allways be repairably.
    • DO
    The external hard disk
MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX(DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will not work for VIDEO !
SHOULD BE - a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly
Moving Events and Projects - ARE DONE in the iMovie Program/Application and in resp. window
Just drag from one hard disk HERE to the other one and new iMovie Proj/Event folders will
be created and iMovie will find them.
AND - answer the choise if You want a full Move or a Copy made.
(Event's window can be changed to view Yearly - or - Yearly per hard disk connected
top right hand corner of window - click small hard disk symbol.)

  • Create a dvd from past project and event moved to external hard drive

i have version 7.04 DVD. Moved several projects and events to external hard drive. How do I go to "existing dvd projects" and create a dvd from a completed past dvd project? do i have to move the project and event back to the iMac hard drive..thanks

A iDVD project contain links to the various elements you have used to make the project. Unless you have actually saved the project as an iDVD Project Archive (an option under FILE in iDVD) which can be a very large file because it actually contains all the elements used in the project with adjusted links, simply moving a project (and/or elements used in the project) breaks all the necessary links. Sometimes you can reestablish the links (iDVD usually gives you a chance to try), but it can't always be done.
    Good luck.

  • Should I keep both Projects and Events in same external drive?

I just updated to 10.1 lastnight and expected to see a few differences with the library system but prior to this version, I was always under the impression that it's better to keep events on one external drive and projects on another which would boost performance. That is how my system is currently setup.
After updating, I had one project being worked (which means one active event folder and one active project folder on both drives). The update modified my projects and events folders as expected, and now I have 2 libraries appearing in FCPX: "Hardrive 1: Updated Projects" and "Harddrive 2: Events".
Problem: The project that appears in the first library has an exclamation sign saying Proxy Files Missing so when I double click it to load into the timeline, the clips don't show.
Confusion: In that same first library that has the project, I also see a few clips from the event that it belongs to, so they all say proxy files missing. The Second Library that's on my Media drive (where I kept my events isolated from before) is showing all the clips that were there from before for that event as it should, so why are there also a fraction of clips inside the First Library where the Project file is? Are clips being duplicated in to where the Project files reside?
SIMPLIFIED QUESTION: Am I now supposed to keep both projects and events on the same single external drive and stop using two separate drives?
Thank you for reading and I appreciate any responses.
    Reynaldo

I was always under the impression that it's better to keep events on one external drive and projects on another which would boost performance.
Unfortunately a surprising number of people have been doing this. It wasn't really any great benefit.
If you saved the original projects and events and the previous version of FCP, who should go back to it and sort out the projects and events. Use the application to move the projects to the drive that holds the corresponding events.  Then update the projects and events in 10.1.
SIMPLIFIED QUESTION: Am I now supposed to keep both projects and events on the same single external drive and stop using two separate drives?
    Absolutely.

  • I just upgraded to iMovie 10.0.1, latest release and need to move my projects and events to an external attached hard drive.  i do not see any hard drive icons in this release.  How do I do this?

I just upgraded to OSX Mavericks and also the lastest release of iMovie.  The version says 10.0.1, but is it the latest release as of 10/14/2013.  I need to free up disc space on my iMac hard drive and move the contents of iMovie libraries to an attached external drive already functioning on my system.  I need to move both events and projects and keep all intact and related.  I have seen disc drives in the previous version of iMovie, but I do not in this one.  How do I move these items? I am in desperate need for disc space.

You can create a brand new Library under File Menu>Open Library>New...
Create the new library on the external hard drive. Then drag all the Events/Projects folders into that Library. Close the Library, quit iMovie 10.x. Now test the new Library by opening iMovie again and see that all the Events/Projects are there in the New Library. You can now safely delete or close the exisitng Library file as those are now duplicates of the real Library sitting on the external hard drive.
Another way to do this is find the exisitng Library file, and simply drag it to the external hard drive in the Mac Finder (disk to disk copy of the Library file, by drag and dropping). Then go back into iMovie, File Menu>Open Library>Other... then naivgate out to the external hard drive and choose the Library you moved within the Finder.
The new iMovie 10.x is much more friendly to use the Finder to run and gun and move stuff at will. It used to be the case the Library file had to be completely managed within iMovie and doing Finder copies would break them. Now it's more flexible in that it works the way most people used to think it should work (doing drag and drop in the Finder)

  • Can I move my FCPX projects and events to an external HD?

I have moved my FCPX Events to an external HD in order to free up space on the internal HD. However, most of the space is taken up by the Projects. I am reluctant to move them onto the external HD (Raid 0) in case I lose data. I understand that the 'move' command cannot be reversed. Also, can I be sure that future imports and work will be saved to the external HD? I have tried Apple help but am still not assured regarding this. Can anyone out there help me please? I know enough to be dangerous!

Well. I have moved a lot of events and projects to a variety of hard drive locations and never had a corrupted file from doing that.
But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't back up – just in case. Do you run Time Machine or another BU utility like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner? If you do and your projects are currently backed up, you can be pretty confident about moving them.
    Good luck.

  • Move all iMovie 11 Projects and Events to new location

I'm looking to move all of my projects and events to an external HD.  I understand that you have to do this from within iMovie and it seems simple enough to move all events but the only way I've found to move Projects is individually - I've got a lot of projects, is there a way to move ALL projects in one go?

    John,
You don't have to put everything in one library - it is often useful to have several.  Have a look at:  http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7   on how to organize your stuff.  Since you have a lot it is worth planning how to organize it before you go ahead.
Consolidate library just makes sure that all media exists in the library as a copy not as links to files elsewhere.  It does not copy anything from other libraries.  (http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov882dee351)
If you have projects that you are in the middle of working on you may want to consider finishing them in iMovie 9.  iMovie 10 has a quite different user interface and will take some time to get familiar with.
    Geoff.

  • Upgrading iMovie from v9.0.9 to v10 with projects and events on external HD

Seem to be running into an issue using iMovie v10 post-upgrade...
I run iMovie v9.0.9 with many projects and events on several external (multi-TB) hard drives. They would not fit on my primary HD due to sheer file size.
I was able to upgrade to v10, but when I tried to convert my existing iMovie library, my primary HD suddenly got a disk out of space error. It appears that the library conversion process is consolidating project and event files from the external drives onto the primary drive. Is this to be expected? Are external drives still supported with iMovie v10?
Not sure the best way to proceed, other than to continue using the old library and iMovie v9.0.9 (which thankfully still works) and try to descipher what files to delete from my now-full primary drive.

Likewise. I was afraid there might be a problem when they let Sarah Palin name the new OS.
I have a 500 GB hard drive that had 100 GB free space before "10.9 Mavericks." Now the disk is full. The iMovie Library on my internal HD is 106.1 GB, and "iMovie Theater.theater" (sic) that is 90.3 GB. The computer is now slower than slow. Also, events that were organized under the names of the Hard Drive that contained them, are now simply called iMovie Library 1, iMovie Library 2, iMovie Library 3, iMovie Library 4, iMovie Library 5, etc.
I had to use my finder and re-name the libraries to indicate the name and size of each HD. in the new iMovie interface.
I copied the events from the internal iMovie library to an external library now called "iMovie Library July2013-3TB" and then moved the events to trash. But the events did not appear in trash, and cannot be emptied. So, the HD is still full.
It seems that the new iMove just wants to fill any available HD space with iMovie Theater (sic) whatever that is. I can't realy explore the new OS until I deal with the HD issue. Fortunately, iMovie 9 is still there, so I can go back to using it. I wll try to drage the iMovie library to an external drive and delete the iMovie Library, iMovie Theatre.theatre, and go back to using iMovie 9. I may never open iMovie 10 again, since the mere act of opening it preceeds the destruction of disk space.
