IMovie won't Share to Quicktime

Went through Expert Settings, tried a few different ways, including Save to CD.
One error message says something about an Error 54,that it perhaps will not save to the drive because there isn't enough room (it would make only a 29 meg file as one option.)
Mostly it says that something within my iMovie project is not compatable with Quicktime. I have footage brought in from a single camera (MiniDV), no mixing of media along that line. The only audio I have is from within iMovie (ie, garage band sounds and themes). There are a LOT of sound effects and music themes in the movie...halloween stuff.
How do I even troubleshoot this problem?
I kept trying to export as something else, and it currently seems to be trying to compress as a flash file. Imagine that will be HUGE, and will probably toss it if it is useless for processing as something that will lead to a YouTube video.
It seems it first wanted to process my 4 min. video in two hours, now it's 1/8 done, but it wants 200 minutes more.
I really don't want to stop this now, but this "whatever problem" has happened a few times now on different projects. If I can't process through to the end, what the heck use is iMovie? Also tried FotoMagico demo recently, and when I went to save to a QT movie, FM crashed. Macs! So stable. ha ha.

Thanks for responding, here at 2 am on West Coast.
Storage space: I have 158 GB on this particular drive, which is not the OS drive. Have a gig of ram.
This would be my fourth project on iMovie, and about my 20th movie (others being on PC with MM2). Three imovie ones are posted at www.youtube.com/CarolJWright. "The Piano" one, which originated from 4mg stills using Photo To Movie, with the huge .dv file from that brought into iMovie just to add a sfx and to save down to a .mov file. (I could not get a QT file from P to M either.) The piano has Incredible quality video and audio on YouTube. The other two, "life's a Beach" and "Nothing but Blue" were shot with a digital still camera on video mode (with some larger stills.) Third Party Plugins? Don't think so. Think P to M is its own program.
I do not know what a Permissions Repair is, though will look when this file finishes processing.
Meanwhile, here I am on my PC at the same time the Mac is churning away. Since the flash export would take forever, I just cancelled it. I also Saved the iMovie project again, and then closed iMovie program, and reopened it. It seemed to tidy up the program's workspace, as there was a partial wider image outside the screen preview area. Could be that was the problem, with QT trying to make that part of the movie area. ?? The film is called Ghost Walker and features my mother's walker all decked out in ghosts. I made a suspsense movie out of our day. cute.
Anyway...I went back in and backed off some of the settings, and it is now churing away as a .mov file, I hope. (Of course, I'd change a few things, right, so I have no idea what might have worked to move things along, if it is indeed working.)
When it started, it said it would take four minutes. Now after 10 minutes, it says it will take 70 minutes, third of the way through or so. What's up with this time going UP as the process continues?
Will look at that Permissions Repair thing, but have no idea what it is. Will look at Pogue's book "Switching to the Mac."
Will let the file process, and come back in 20 minute to see if there are other suggestions...or if my movie turned into something.
When I get almost done creating a movie, I turn into a bulldog and want to finish it. Grrrr!
I have a gig of memory

  • IMovie won't share my movie.

    Hello,
I'm now finished with editing my movie. When i try to share the movie as a file or to youtube it gives me this message:
"This object can not be shared as long as
it still has references to the media on camera."
What does it mean, how can i fix this? Yes i did import the files from my camcorder to iMovie. (I'm using a Canon XA10)
    Thanks

I don't see anything obvious that is wrong.
    I would try the following.
    Use SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME
    Choose MOVIE TO QUICKTIME MOVIE
    Click Options.
For Video Compression, choose Apple Intermediate Codec.
For size, choose current size or 720x480.
Then save it where you can find it.
If that works, you can take the file in Apple Intermediate Codec and convert it to h264 in an app like MPEG Streamclip or QuickTime Player.

  • IMovie won't share to anything!

Ok. I've done as much research as I can. I have a mate that works with Macs and even he's stumped.
imovie 11. I have just finished a simple 15 minute movie with photos and clips from Nikon camera and iPhone. It plays on iMovie no problem. As soon as I go to "share" with iTunes or Theatre, it comes up with "There was a problem sharing this file". Then a Video -50 error.
I have heaps of RAM and 25G free on hard drive. My movie files are all M4V and MOV  files. Music is from iTunes. I've done a tonne of movies on the old iMovie and never had a drama. Got the update and have just had my first drama with my first movie.
There is another guy on the forum that has exactly the same problem but no one has replied.
From my mates point of view, if it plays entirely without drama on the MAC, it should be fine!
    Please help!
    iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

    Hi Rod,
    Try this.
Delete any projects in the Theatre that aren't exported properly.  Then try the workflow that I stumbled upon.
    Strange fix for export problems
    Cheers!

  • IMovie won't share/export my project as it says 'not enough disk space' - how on earth do I get this movie onto a DVD?

I really hope someone can help me please?
I have a 16GB iPad and have created a really nice wedding DVD for my sister.  It consists of about 20 mins worth of video clips and 25 mins of images set to music with movement between slides etc.  I have cleared absolutely everything off that's possible from my memory and I can't seem to get the iMovie project off my iPad!  My storage says that 8.7GB is taken up by iMovie and I've deleted all photos from my camera roll as iMovie can run the project without them, it doesn't cope without the video clips though (tried that!)
I hve now tried exporting to iTunes and it says I don't have enough disk space - I don't understand how it can't just lift the project off my iPad without having to consume yet more storage?  I have also tried exporting to camera roll trying 1080pHD - too big.  It started on the 710pHD and got all the way through exporting (around 30 mins) and then at the end told me I didn't have enough disk space.  Funnily enough, iMovie was only taking up around 6GB of space prior to this, so it's storing this failed attempt to export some how but I can't see how I can get rid of that.
I am heartbroken that I've spent three months doing this and now can't transport it from my iPad by seeminly any means possible.  I don't want to just give up.  I've seen other threads that say 'go to my computer and look in the DCIM folder and it's there... but it's not.  All the video clips are there but not the actual project.
Any help anyone can give would be so much appreciated.  Is there a way I can do this without essentially having to give up on apple products and buy some video editing software for my PC. Which isn't a MAC by the way.  As you can tell, I was hoping to screen this movie on Christmas day for the family :-(
    Jessica

Are any of your apps video players? Some app store apps contain a file you can't see which saves logs of everything you do. Say if you have had an iPhone for 4 months and watched 50 videos with a video player these 50 videos may have been copied to the log file inside the application and may be what is using up all your disk space. Delete all video player applications from your iPhone.
If that doesn't solve the problem copy the photos to your computer and restore your iPhone with iTunes back to factory settings and when you have restored DO NOT "restore from back up" because that might restore whatever is causing the problem instead DO "set up as new iPhone". Once you've set up your iPhone sync apps, books music, photos...etc back to the device.

  • IMovie 10.0.06 won't share to Youtube

I'm using iMovie 10.0.06 and it won't share to Youtube.
It did do this once before on a test video but now I can't share my movie to Youtube.
    "Invalid account name or password"
As far as I'm aware this has not changed. I assume this is the username and password for Youtube channel (which is same as Google+ right?)
Does anyone know if I go the manual route of exporting to file and uploading to Youtube whether I will lose quality?
iMovie 11 exporting to Youtube used to compress the file horribly.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Baloo
Thanks for that suggestion. It worked brilliantly for me!
I'm using iMovie 10.0.6 on Yosemite 10.10.2. All functioning great until I unexpectedly found failure to share. All buttons clickable but no effect. Also noted failure to import with pop-up saying " Cannot ingest because no storage location found"
After seeing your post I downloaded and ran OnyX, and iMovie now runs perfectly. Many Thanks!
I guess it would be possible, with sufficient knowledge of whats under the bonnet, to fix this problem without using third party software. But for most of us a user-friendly utility like Onyx does a great job. Do you use it only when problems arise, or do you regularly scan and clean etc?

  • Imovie won't upload to youtube, and quicktime won't upload in hd

I have had no problems in the past. i would upload an hd video to youtube, and it would be able to play in youtube hd. now imovie won't post to youtube. and when i export it to quicktime in hd, then post it to youtube, it isn't in hd. i recently bought the hauppauge 1212 hd pvr and eye tv 3.5, so i could record gameplay in hd. any ways to upload to youtube in hd? i've had no luck so far. thanks

  • Accidentally deleted Quicktime files now quicktime, or imovie won't open

    Hi,
My quicktime was not working properly so I thought I could remove all the quicktime files to trash and try to download another one from the apple website. But, when I do so it says I have Quicktime X already installed. But, when I try to open programs with Quicktime it just gives me an error message and closes. I also, cannot open other programs that use QuickTime such as iMovie. It says " The QuickTime components necessary to view, edit, import, and export several kinds of movies are not installed. These components are included with the iMovie installer; please re-install. " Where do I get these components to download again?

" Where do I get these components to download again?
From your install disc. You will need to custom install Quicktime which should be included either inside the bundled software folder or the Applications folder.
If you cannot locate, you will need to use Pacifist.
Just launch the installer and click the Continue buttons until you reach the _Custom Install_ screen. Click the triangle next to Applications, click the box next to the application you want to custom install, and click the Install button to install the application.
If you’d like to reinstall applications that aren’t offered in the Custom Install screen—applications in the Utilities folder or in the Bundled Software folder for example—you can use Pacifist - http://www.charlessoft.com/
    *To use Pacifist:*
Insert your Mac OS X Installer disc. Download Pacifist and launch it. In the window that appears click the Open Apple Install Discs button. A window will appear offering you the single choice to look at the OSInstall package. Click OK.
Pacifist will churn away for a bit and then you’ll see a window titled OSInstall.mpkg. In this window you can dig down through the hierarchy of folders to find what you seek or you can enter the name of what you’re after in the Find field and press Return. A drawer appears that lists the names of matching files.
To install an item click the Install button in the upper-left corner of the window. You’ll be prompted for your administrator’s password. Enter it, click OK, and the item will be installed into its proper location on your Mac’s hard drive.

  • Quicktime Movies made in iMovie won't go by email

Recently the Quicktime Files I have made from iMovie will play on my computer but
when I e-mail them to MACs and PCs and burn them to CDs they will not play
A warning appears that files & clips can not be found. I have iMovie 4.0.1
    and Quicktime 7.3.1
I have tried everything I can think of but can not fix the problem.
Help,help,help....I have successfully made movies and e-mailed them
but I have not used this software in a long time.
Any suggestions will be most appreciated.
You can e-mail me direct at [email protected]

The default export dialog window in older versions of iMovie had the check box set for "reference" movie. You need to change it to "self contained".
Reference movies merely "point" to the actual data found in your iMovie Project. Fine when working from your computer (they are very tiny in file size) but useless anywhere else.

  • Imovie won't let me save my movie as a file, and it says ''startup disk'' is full!

I made a movie on Imovie and it won't let me download or convert, I don't know what else I can do, and also it says my disk is full, and my macbook is 64 and its impossible, i dont have that much. please help me. I want to save my movie and fix disk because is making my computer slower and doesn't let me save anything because is ''full''. I need to find a way to save the movie complete and as a file and make my computer faster and with it's original memory.
    HELP!.

I have the same problem and then some. I movie won't share this particular project, but it also won't save any changes made to it or any other project. At least that's what it started doing, now when I go to even try to make any changes it wigs out and things get scrambled in the Project window and it plays video from another project.
When I create a new project, the Share menu is available, but it won't save changes to that project either. And by that I mean I can put stuff in the project and do whatever, but as soon as I quit and relaunch the application, the project is empty. I did figure out that if I make changes in a new project and immediately share it to the media browser that it will save the changes, but then it messes up my other project even more somehow!
Tried archive and install, deleting plists, reinstalling iMovie and iLife support stuff (twice), repairing permissions, and changing permissions in the project package. Any other ideas?

  • Imovie won't open on mac.  i've restarted and "forced-quit" move.  not responding. any suggestions?

iMovie won't respond.  I've restarted and "forced-quit" move, but not getting a response.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions... tried changing resolution and that had no effect, and I've checked my Perian and DivX installations in System Preferences and both say they are completely up to date. I upgraded Quicktime today to 7.5 before all of this became a problem -- but I don't know how to upgrade iLife. In Software Update everything is completely up to date (eg each of the iLife apps).
Oh well, iMovie is not very useful to me anyway -- just somehow annoying that it fails to work. No point flogging a dead horse!!
Any other ideas gratefully received... many thanks in advance

  • IMovie won't recognize certain 'File extensions' ??

    Hi,
can anyone help here. I use Handbrake to compress Movie files before I use Quicktime to 'export to web' option, then import to iMovie to then edit before submitting ti iTunes ( keeps the size down but still have good quality ). Anyway even though the files from Handbrake have either a .mov or .m4v extension iMovie won't recognize them, but if I then use QT export to web ( which in turn makes a folder with the new files inside ) which have the .m4v, iMovie will see it !!
    Any ideas please.
The compressed file under Handbrake is small but good quality ( 2.3Gb down to 178Mb ) but if I use QT it then becomes even bigger ( 539Mb ) !!!!!
    Steve

I'm new to Handbrake so could you tell me what do you mean by 'Don't include extraneous data tracks' ?
Most people use HandBrake to convert DVD content (usually multiplexed M2V video and AC3 audio) to iPhone, iPod, TV, iTunes/Front Row files for viewing and/or iMovie '08 compatible files for editing. Since DVD content usually contains chapter data and the default setting for Apple device presets like TV normally default to include the chapter track data and (in older versions) may default to include an extra AC3 "passthrough" audio track, the output from such conversions are not supported by iMovie '08. If this is true, then re-exporting the content as you described would remove the extraneous data and explain why the files are incompatible with iMovie '08 before export and compatible after.
However, you have not confirmed that the incoming files are, in fact, stored on DVDs or indicated which specific settings are being used for your HandBrake conversions. iMovie '08 is only "edit" compatible with files containing DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, and certain profiles of MPEG-4 or H,264 video compressed data. So there is always a secondary possibility here that you are selecting an incompatible form of output form HandBrake and then using the "Export for Web" option to accidentally convert the incompatible compression format to a compatible one since this option exports to H.264/AAC by default.
If you have a much better way of doing this I am all ears especially if it makes my life easier, I am on a steep learning curve here ( sending video podcasts to iTunes but in good quality ).
The normal approach would be to select the iPod preset within HandBrake (or within QT Pro, GarageBand, MPEG Streamclip, etc. if the source file is QT compatible) and convert directly to an iMovie '08 compatible file. The iPod preset would create a file equivalent to the "Desktop" (1500 Kbps) file created by the "Export for Web..." option but, as previously mentioned may contain a "chapter" track if you fail to turn it off. If you want a smaller output file, then all you have to do is reduce the target data rate in HandBrake. If you are currently editing the equivalent of the iPhone file (900 Kbps) using your current work flow, then reduce the target average bit rate to 900 or 1000 Kbps before exporting from HandBrake. Basically, this approach is faster since you do not have to export the data twice. On the other hand, it is a bit more complicated since you have to manually ensure any extraneous data tracks are de-selected and that the correct compressing preset/settings are selected.

  • IMovie won't read all my Canon HF100 files.

I have a Canon HF100 camcorder. I record in FXP or 1080 HD video mode, 60 frames. My PC reads and imports the video just fine.
I have a brand new Macbook Pro 15" intel cpu machine with iMovie 09. When I use one of the memory cards to import video it works fine. When I use the other memory card to import video it doesn't even see the camera. It will import pics from it into iPhoto and mounts the camera so you can see the files but iMovie won't even recognize it.
The cards are both formatted fat 32, all video on both is recorded in the same format, both cards had pictures on them as well as the video. I have tried everything I can to get iMovie to read the files, everything suggested on the forums and researched the heck out of this. It won't recognize one of my cards, even though everything else on the mac will. I have 14 gig of HD video to import and am running out of options. I don't have the money to buy another program just to get THIS program to read the files. iMovie 09 was supposed to be HD compatible....why doesn't it have native .mts file support? these cameras have been out for over a year or two and are some of the more popular ones around now. Please help if you can!!!!

    D. Thomas Lamourine wrote:
well, it seems that the card is bad from what you say. Are you plugging the camera directly to the mac? or using a card reader? what type of card? (guessing MMC/SD card?) how big is the card? if you can get it to show on the desktop then make a folder and manually drag the files off the card and into the folder a few at a time. You will probably find one or 2 corrupt and wont move over so don't try and do them all at once because it'll just bog down. do the smaller ones first!!
you may also find that very large files SEEM to be not seen but it's just the USB/Firewire/system need a LOT of time to transport and convert the file into mac.. (not really what it's doing but give you and idea)
As was stated you may need to reformat the card because its got bad data areas/blocks. From what you are stating it's more than likely the card, not the computer/software.
I have had issues with a friends camera importing to Imovie. My camera and his both record in AVI format but mine I can import directly where his I have to run it through Quicktime Pro and convert to MOV files.. why? no clue but it works.
I would love it if it was just a bad card but check this out. The files are all perfectly fine. They can be copied to my mac no problem. I imported them all to my Windows PC and they play / edit just fine. I'm working with a free file converter to change them into what, mpeg4? I really really don't want to buy VoltaicHD just for a memory card worth (albeit 16 gig of video) of video. I DID find this on Canon's website....
+Issue: What is the Mac compatibility of my camcorder?+
+Solution: The digital video solutions disk is compatible with Mac OS 10.2 up to 10.4 for stills only. No video related software is provided.+
+The video connectivity of the Canon DVD and Hard Disc Drive camcorders provided by the software bundled with them is designed for use with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Microsoft Windows Vista only. The Sonic Roxio My DVD software included with some models is only compatible with the Windows XP SP2 operating system when combined with a computer supporting the USB 2.0 specification.+
+Macintosh OS10.4.3 and up users may be able to view the contents of a finalized disk or files recorded onto the hard drive (for hard disc drive models) on the computer when it is connected to a USB port on the computer. With a finalized disk loaded into the camcorder the camera should show up on the desktop as a mounted drive and files may be copied (dragged) from the disk using normal procedures. Any desired editing, playback or other features may require additional third party software.+
+Note: Proper operation is not guaranteed.+
Now I already have reformatted the card and put the files back on it, still no dice. I've tried everything I can think of, I have no other codecs on my machine but QT native codecs. From what Ive read on the forums and such it seems that iMovie and the lack of support by Apple for .mts and .m2ts file formats in general is the main problem. It seems people have random problems with HD camcorders. Some people it works fine for and some it doesn't..I am one of the unlucky ones with intermittent compatibility. Fun. I have spent SO much time on this problem I almost took my mac back. This is my first Mac and while I love it to death, I am getting real tired of the unsupported crap and having to download other programs to get it to work right when it was supposed to do so in the beginning. I'm not trying to rant, just really frustrated at all the extra expense after having paid 2400$ for what was supposed to do it by itself. From what Canon said on their website, apparently there ARE issues with mac compatibility and it may or may not work. yay. Oh well, I guess I'm stuck paying for more 3rd party software.
Also, yea, I cannot import AVI files into iMovie even after I installed divx...good stuff.

  • Movie won't open in Quicktime and won't save in iTunes

I have just finished editing a project and I am trying to share it to iTunes or Quicktime.
When I share it to "Apple Devices 720", it was automatically saved to the Final Cut Project file folder under "Shared Items", and inside I found the Quicktime file for the project. But it won't open in Quicktime, I am getting an error message that says:
"The document XXXXX (1280 x 720).m4v-TEMP” could not be opened. The movie's file format isn't recognized."
I tried to share it to iTunes, nothing works. I just want to be able to play it.
Ideally, I would like to be able to play the movie in iTunes on my iMac, and be able to sync it to iPod Touch.

Actually, I solved the problem. follow these instrudctions:
In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences—the tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
Remove the "com.apple.finalcutpro.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Remove the "Final Cut Pro User Data" folder from the Preferences folder.
If you can't find com.apple.finalcutpro.plist delete any com.apple.finalcut..... files.
