Import data into a form in Acrobat Pro X

Have followed directions on importing data in text format into a form in Acrobat Pro X . Does not work. Is it possible to import a large amount of data into a form and have multiple forms created? Very frustrating and disappointing.

Here's a recent topic that discusses this type of thing: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3397600
Note that some of the code that was posted isn't correct, but you will see the general approach outlined. It does require some JavaScript programming. Have you done any before?

  • Importing data into dynamic form

    I have not yet had a chance to work with LiveCycle, and I have been given a project which I need to determine if LiveCycle would be the correct solution. The client originally wanted this to be a Microsoft Word form, but I doubt that I can meet the requirements using Word.
    I need to design a form which a user can enter multiple line items either manually, or by importing existing data. The data itself would be about 40-50 distinct pieces of data, in a block of  several sections and multiple lines (i.e Name, Address block, Phone/fax/email, contact and comment section, etc) and would be a combination of text fields and checkboxes. There would be 2-3 of these blocks per page (with a static header/footer), plus a cover page with data fields for the organization using the form.
    I know that I could create this type of dynamic form in LiveCycle to be entered manually, but I don’t know what options, if any, I would have in giving the user the ability to import existing data from an unknown source (could be a text file, a local or hosted database, excel, etc.).
    My questions are about the feasibility of LiveCycle for this project:
    Can data be imported from a data source the user chooses? Are there any limitations to what kinds of data sources can be used? Would I need to program a custom function to allow the user to match the proper fields for the import, or is there a built in function to handle this?
    Would there be any platform/application limitations? Can the form be used with Reader on a desktop computer (Mac or PC), or on a tablet (and if so, is a specific app necessary instead of the default app)?
    Are there any other foreseeable issues I may have to deal with?

    Thanks for the info. A few followup questions if you don't mind:
    1. Needs to configure an ODBC-connection on every system it is used.
    This form will be sent to our client, and they will send it to their customers. Can the connection setup be scripted, or is it simple enough that a generic set of instruction can be given to the end user to allow them to setup the connection and map their fields to the form's content easily?
    2. Requires Acrobat or a reader-enabled from to use in Reader. Data is automatically populated in the form fields. Only xml files for import allowed. Allows to use XSLT to format imported data.
    I doubt that the end user would have their data in a compatible XML format, so this option may not be necessary. Is Reader-enabling a form in LiveCycle comparable to the process in Acrobat? I have heard LiveCycle Enterprise is very expensive and required for certain functions, does this apply here? Does this require a specific server setup for these forms?
    3. Difficult scripting to update field values automatically. Works in Reader and Acrobat.
    The data would not need to be updated automatically, just pull current data into the form. This would be a one-way operation, there would be no need to update the data source from values within the form. I would still need to give the user a way to map their fields to the form.
    Are you aware of any tutorials or example files that would help give me a start? I had a brief look at the LiveCycle Designer ES2 Scripting Reference, but I"m not sure which objects to look into.
    None of these methods will work on mobile devices as there is currently no support of XFA in Reader Mobile.
    Good to know. The same is probably true if I were to create the form in Word/Office.

  • Reader Extending Designer Form in Acrobat Pro 8

    Dear All,
    Last year I managed to put together an organisational survey where users fill in a form created in Designer 7.0 and then hit a submit button which spits all entered data out to an MS Database. It worked great.
    I reader extended this survey to work on adobe reader 7.0 as that was what was installed on most of the client machines at the time.
    Now I am revising the survey for 2008 but running into a problem which has just about got the better of me.
    No matter what I do, running the reader extended form in adobe reader ver x.x does not submit the entered data to the database. Yet if I run it in Acrobat Pro or the preview tab through Designer, it works fine.
    For simplicity, I have created a test form.
    It only has a text field which is linked to a field within an MS database. The MS database only has 1 field.
    The form then has a submit button which contains the following java code for the click event.
    xfa.sourceSet.test.update();
    xfa.sourceSet.test.close();
    app.alert("Worked!!!!");
    Another button (which is set to invisible) contains the following java code
    xfa.sourceSet.test.open();
    xfa.sourceSet.test.addNew();
    which is triggered on the initialize event.
    All works fine until I have to open the form in Acrobat Pro 8 to reader extend it. The saved reader extended version when opened in any reader version, does nothing when clicking the submit button. Yet I know it has been successfully reader extended because when opening in reader 7.0 it says you can save data entered in this form.
    I have tried with Designer 7.0 but same thing.
    When I open the form I created in early 2007 in Reader 7.0 and it works I sit mystified and say "How?"
    The issue is definetly with the reader extending.
    Any guidance will be greatly appreciated as I have exhausted all avenues I can think of.
    Thanking You in advance.
    Daniel

    Acrobat 8 Professional includes LiveCycle Designer 8, so if the form was created with LiveCycle Designer 8 or older, the yes should have the option to edit the form. Acrobat 8 Professional under the menu option 'Forms' will have an option to open the form in LiveCycle Designer. If the form was created with a newer version, there could be some issues with newer features not available in version 8.

  • I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep.

    I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting the new computer, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep. I want to use my iCloud password on both computers consistently. How can I fix this?

    The only other place to change a password for the computer login is in Users & Groups preferences. But I don't really know enough here to fix your problem. You can try fixing the keychain:
    iCloud- Frequently asked questions about iCloud Keychain
    Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
    If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
    First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
      1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
      3. Click the "First Aid" tab
      4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
      5. Close the Preferences window
      6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
      7. Enter your username and password
      8. Click the "Repair" button
    The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
      1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
      3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
      4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
      5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
      6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
          "New Keychain"
      7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
          going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
    Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
    First, you want to enable the root user:
      1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
      4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
    After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
    Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
    Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
    Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
    Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.

    Are you attempting to import into a newly made table or into an existing table? It looks like it's trying to insert data where it cannot be inserted (invalid column or lack of data size in your column).
    Try the following:
    1). In your excel sheet, highlight the whole sheet and make sure the cells are in 'text' form and try re-importing
    2). save the document as ms dos TEXT and import as a text document.
    3). double check your columns are correct for the data, for example if you have a column that has a string of 100 characters and your column is 'NvarChar(90)' - that might cause the error? Or just correct data type in your column
    3). If that doesn't work and you're inserting into a new table, try importing it as string first and writing a query to insert columns that should be float/integer or whatever. You may want to convert float texts to a 'bigint' first rather than string
    > float as that can cause problems if I remember correctly.

  • Importing Data into Apex 3.0.1

    I know that this question has a simple answer, but here goes. I know how to import data into oracle using sql loader and sql insert commands but can Apex import data into a blank application form with multiple rows of data to import.
    Like:
    U_Id L_Name F_Name City State zip
    15 Taylor Joe Atown Mi 42333
    16 Jones Jim NewT Ky 43211
    and 200 or 500 or more columes
    Again I know how to import into Apex to create a new form from a spreadsheet or access, but I don't know how to move raw data from a text file into Apex.
    Can this task be done.
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Tim,
    When an application is first created the developer has to specify the schema that will be used to parse (compile) all the code against. All you need to do is to use your existing knowledge of importing data into Oracle and import the data you want into the Parsing Schema of the application. Use Application Definition to find the parsing schema for your application.

  • Fill data into a form programmatically and print the form afterwards

    Folks,
    until recently a lab assistant took measurements and filled the data into a paper form (see attached pdf). Now we are building a test stand that does the measurement semiautomatically. The software of the test stand will be programmed in LabVIEW, of course. The test stand shall generate a printed protocol very similar to the attached pdf in future as well.
    What's the best way to fill the acquired data into the form and to print the form afterwards? The form can be read by our code in either pdf or html. There is no Microsoft Office installed on the computer.
    Modifying the html code? Converting the pdf to a picture and fill the data into the picture? Any hint will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Peter

    Hmmm... must have misunderstood what you were saying.
    XSL is a language that allows you to generate an HTML document. The XSL basically defines the style, and the XML specifies the data. HTML is the combination. You can find out more here.
    Unfortunately, since you don't have Office, you won't be able to use the ActiveX interface to control Word, so that's out.
    With the template in HTML format you could use the DOM for an HTML file to set the value of the HTML elements. The easiest way to do this is to use IE (I'm assuming you're on Windows here) to open the HTML template and then you can use the DOM from there. As for how feasible this is, it would depend on your HTML format. Can you post the template in HTML format?
    With the template in PDF format I know that some PDF files that are forms can be generated in such a way that they still act like forms when you open them in, say, Acrobat Reader. Acrobat has an ActiveX interface so you should be able to programmatically do this, but I can't say for sure. You can check the Adobe site for more info. You just need to make sure it doesn't require the full version of Acrobat.

  • Import data into an MS Access database

    How I can import data into an MS Access database form a PDF form?
    Any sample to get start I'll appreciate.
    Thanks

    To my opinion, there are 3 potential approaches :
    1. rewrite the application, that data are stored directly in the oracle database
    or the program writes flat files somewhere to the file system which are able getting
    imported from the target instance on daily basis or job driven;
    2. The "Access-driven approach" : link oracle tables into the MS-Access application
    using an ODBC-connection and build a macro in Access which is exporting the stuff to
    the target instance; in order to do so, the Oracle Client and ODBC-Drivers needs to
    get installed on the PC where MS-Access is started to start the exportation process
    (which is probably yours).
    You may then create tables in the target instance and link them from within Access
    using ODBC as the datasource
    3. The "Oracle driven approach". explained in detail here, never tried it, but maybe
    worth a look
    http://www.orafaq.com/node/60
    Basically, install the Oracle Software on a PC, configure an ODBC-Connection and start a
    Listener there;
    The target instance (which may no run on a UNIX system) is now able to commuincate
    with the local running listener on your PC which itself is instantiating a connection to
    the Access "Database" using the ODBC-Connection.
    In this way, your PC acts as a database server from the Oracle Net point of view.
    In theory, this could even work, depending on the ability to connect from the
    instance server directly to the given IP of your PC (Security ?? Hmmmz)

  • How do I edit a "fill and print form" using Acrobat Pro XI?

    We recently upgraded to Adobe Acrobat Pro, version 11. We have some staff who previously created "fill and print" forms with Adobe Acrobat 10. However, now when they try to use version 11 to edit the form, they receive the following message: This form cannot be edited in Acrobat. Please use Adobe LiveCycle Designer to edit this form.
    If I remember correctly, version 10 (or some package suite) use to install LiveCycle along with version 10. This doesn't seem to be the case with version 11. So... How do we obtain LiveCycle Designer? Is it still available to install on a desktop or is it only available in the cloud?  Or, preferably, is there a way to edit the form using Acrobat Pro version 11?
    I don't work with Adobe forms, so any information you can provide will be extremely helpful. Thanks.

    LCD forms can only be edited in LCD. However, Adobe stopped distributing LCD together with Acrobat. You need to purchase it separately now, but if you had a previous license you can get it at a large discount, I think. Try the LCD forums for more info about that.

  • Merging Excel data into a form created in LiveCycle

    Hello,
    I've made a form in LiveCycle.  The first of the 5 pages I want to pre-populate with data before I distribute the final form.  My data is in Excel and I have ensured that the header titles match the field names on the form.  Could someone help me to get the data into the form please.  I'm pretty new to xml and have found following the Help difficult.

    Please re-ask in the LiveCycle Designer forum  http://forums.adobe.com/community/livecycle/livecycle_es/livecycle_designer_es  That is where people who use the Designer product hang out.

  • How to embed a mp4 video into a pdf with acrobat pro XI?

    I'm  trying to embed a mp4 video into a pdf using Acrobat Pro XI.  When I try to play the video, all I see is a black box. The video is H.264 codec. I've tried on a PC and Mac and get the same results.

    Video playback in the Acrobat Family uses Flash Player, so if it works in FP (loaded via an HTML page) then it should work in your PDF. First suggestion is to use the free MediaInfo tool to check exactly what the internal structure reports as.
