Import from catalog: what happens to this catalog ?
Hello everyone!
I follow Scott Kelbys LR3 book for transferring my work from my studio laptop to my main processing computer in my office using the EXPORT TO CATALOG technique.
So then I transfer the folder to where I keep my LR pictures in MY COMPUTER. Then I IMPORT AS Catalog into LR.
QUESTION: What happens to the LRcat and LRdata file I imported afterwards? Are they copied or otherwise incorporated into my MAIN LRcat or is it safe to DELETE the imported LRCAT & LRDATA files because they are now part of the MAIN catalog?
I hope this is clear... Thanks!
I'm almost certain you can delete the catalog you imported from. But to be sure, you could create an exported catalog with one image in it, import it into your main catalog, then delete the one you imported from and see what happens.

What happens to the catalog with an improper shutdown?
I am wondering what happens to the catalog when lightroom does not shut down properly.
After using lightroom for almost 2 years with no problems, the past few days have just been insane with issues and lost work.
Today, our power went out while I was working and when I turned my computer back on, sure enough my catalog was corrupt.
Thankfully It was able to repair itself. It got me thinking though, I have had this happen a few times before in the past couple years and I have NEVER had a damaged catalog until this week. What happens with an improper shut down that screws the catalog up so badly?
I am now to the point where I am terrified to work in fear that I will lose everything. I am hoping the XMP thing will save my butt in the future, but should I always have to be worried like this? Lightroom just doesn't feel as strong as it used to now that everything we have worked on this week has been damaged...A crash of any sort while you're working with any complex application with major work going on is disheartening/frightening/annoying. I have been fortunate to have escaped any O/S or power deficiencies in my time with LR, but no one is completely immune.
If you have major stuff going on and aren't backed up the way you'd like, just quit LR, make a copy of the current catalog, .lrcat, and relaunch. You can also send the metadata to the files, as you've noted, but I like the former way. Or do both! -Hope this helps allay some fear. -
In latest 2 days after update ios 5.01 my ipad2 suddenly restart when i reading from ibook, what happen with new update ?
Download the full version of the software then shift click the restore button. This will ask you where the firmware files are. Once you point to the firmware then you can install the official version

What happened to this thread? --> LabVIEW poll "Features you would like to see in LabVIEW!"

Unfortunately, we were not able to migrate the polls and topics to the new system when we launched. The good news is that we still have access to the data and are investigating our migration options available.
We will also focus on getting some new topics and polls out to the community in the next few weeks.
Thanks!

I am running OSX Lion 10.78.4 and the computer will no longer go into sleep mode when I close the cover. In system preferences I can no longer find the option that allows for this energy saving feature. What happened to this option and why is this no longer happening with the latest version of Lion?
No external monitors or devices attached. When you mention that this function only works when devices are attached that is true when you set up your preferences that way. Up until my upgrade to Lion the computer would always go into sleep mode when I closed the lid. There also used to be an option to check in system preferences that allowed you to choose this option. My question for the discussion is what happened to that option and how do you get the computer to sleep or at least the display to sleep when you close the lid as we have been able to do in the past. Thanks.

The PWR MGMT LED on the front panel of the sup720 is off. What happen with this?
The PWR MGMT LED on the front panel of the standby sup720 is off (But the active engine is on). We check the switch guide which states "The SYSTEM and PWR MGMT LEDs on a redundant supervisor engine or RSP are synchronized to the active module.". What happen with this? Thanks!
HI @bingxiong.feng,
This is not a cause for concern as Cisco says in the following link:

With BACKSPACE, TAB WITH SETTINGS, DELETE, TYPE OF TYPE, BOLD TYPE, UNDERLINE ETC....
I HAVE A KEYBOARD COVER AND IF I NEED TO USE CERTAIN KEYS I HAVE TO SWITCH TO MY KEYBOARD CASE AND THAT IS VERY INCONVENIENT.
IT IS ALSO A TIME WASTER.
When you installed iOS 8 did you read about the new features? Applications can create custom keyboards…
http://www.imore.com/custom-keyboards-ios-8-explained
You need to look for an app that has a custom keyboard with the features you require, I suggest you find one without CAPSLOCK

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME
Again you need to look at how to manage the device - these settings can be turned off already & you can edit the 'suggestions' too.
Settings > General > Keyboards > turn Auto-Correction Off.
Sadly you cannot disable autocorrect temporarily, so it's all or nothing. -
Same photo in more than one catalog - what happens?
What happens if you have the same photo in more than one catalog?
Background: I'm using a 4yr old 13" MacBook and my Lightroom is getting rather slow, on some pictures unusable. At the same time my lrcat files are growing rather fast. Probably due to my current work on some old scanned slides which require quite a lot of spot removal (last 3 photos worked on increased the lrcat file by 250mb) and each time Lightroom became virtually unusable. I will be upgrading the computer but it wont be for a few months yet. On one of the last slides I ended up with a "Oops! An untagged string (history step does not belong to instance) got thrown far enough that we display it to the user. This shouldn't happen.".
So I'm looking at splitting my catalog into two or more seperate catalogs. But I have some galleries which contain photos from what would cross "sensible" splits of catalog so I thought about having the same photo in both catalogs where necessary.
My Lightroom is set to include metadata in XMP (probably making the performance worse). I had intended to split catalogs using "export to catalog".
Does the photo in each catalog have it's own develop "fork" ? (i.e. does the metadata include catalog tags) ? Or will changes made to the photo in one catalog automatically upadate the next catalog (or overwrite changes made in the other catalog), etc.? Only a single computer, no network/sharing issues, nothing on exchangable/removable disk drives.
I could experiment but after quite some time the other day resolving the "history step does not belong to instance") I am treating my catalog with great care.
(I have does a search for the question so will be very embarassed/appologetic if somebody says "Read www.adobe.com/.....").
Many thanksFor some reason photos were scanned in as jpegs. They end-up at around 16-19MB each. Reasons for that are historical. I am applying spot corrections in Photoshop in a new layer, then merging layers when everyting is done OK to save (saving as PSD gave a massive file size). I will try saving as tiff. Personally I hate JPEGs but was never too concerned about the scans in LR as LR is never resaving the image (non-destructive editing). I may easily upgrade to CS6 (upgrade is <£200 on Amazon), but being non-professional, fuds are not unlimited (particularly with new computer coming soon!!).
So weird effect is with jpegs around 16MB after Photoshop edits. It is completely reproducable (i.e. has happened exactly the same of every photo done via this route). The surprising thing is that exiting and restarting LR stops the weird effect.
Adding 2 and 2 together to get 22, I wonder if, as I have "Write Metadata to XMP ..." enabled, if LR has a watch on the file for changes after switching to external editor (i.e. to detect when external editor saved changes so LR updates from the file) and that that "watch for change" is not cancelled after exiting the external editor - maybe because LR cannot know if external editing is compketed (even though exitng Photoshop does not stop the effect). Then, when LR writes to the file (to update the XMP data) it "detects" the change it causd itself and hence the reload. If I change the Catalog Settings to disable the "Include develop settings in JPEG ..." and disable the "Save XMP Data ...", the effect goes away and if I re-enable those catalog options the effect returns.
I will try saving as tiff in future now I'm really re-saving the image.
Many thanks -
Any idea what happened in this crash and if my MacBook needs work?
A friend of mine suggested that I post the crash report here to see if anyone knows what happened and whether I need to do anything. I would go to a Genius Bar, but the nearest Apple Store to me is 3 hours away
Here's what happened:
I was working in Firefox when the computer screen suddenly went completely black without warning or any sounds. I tiled the monitor forward slightly and the screen came back up for an instant before a partly opaque gray curtain fell from the top of the screen to the bottom. Then a message showed up on the far left - the box was half off the screen - saying I needed to shut down my computer. I did. I waited a few minutes and powered it on. The screen was gray with tiny gray horizontal pinstripes for a while with the apple logo (also crossed with the pinstripes) while it was booting up. However, it never fully booted up. I had to shut it down again. I booted it as a target drive with another computer to copy over important documents. Then, I ejected it and shut it down. Then I powered it on, and this crash report showed up after it booted up.
And below is the crash report.

Used to be you could select which page you wished to go back or forward to from the arrow icons on the navigation toolbar. The history menu item only shows 10 sites without having to open history for today. What happened? Is there another icon or a new plug in for this functionality? I used it all the time.
''what happened to the page select icon (Back/Forward)''
The back/forward buttons have been moved to right-hand side of the navigation bar and the drop-down was removed. User right-click or hold click for one second to see the tab history. This is item #5 in my list.
The History menu also has "Open Previous session" and "Open closed windows",
to see more history use the History sidebar ("Ctrl+H") or the History Library List ("Ctrl+Shift+H") and sort or view by "Last visited".

I recently updated all of the computers in the house to itunes 11. Now when we try to import songs from homesharing, we are unable to. What happened to the conveniently located "import song" button on the old version of itunes. Please help an old mother out please!
diesel vdub, i use 11.1.1
solved the issue today. first sync with itunes, so all the stiff you bought on the mobile will be backuped.
1. uncheck sync music in itunes and sync. all the music will be erased from mobile device
2. check music player on the mobile device. just the unwanted songs will still be there
3. go on the iphone to settings, general, usage, music player. there is just a few mb from the remaining unwanted songs. swipeleft and erase the content. switch iphone off and on again
4. repeat step 2. there will be no data. otherwise repeat step 3
5. check sync music in itunes and sync. all the music will be back again but not the unwanted songs. -
Import from scanner give error message "This file already exists in this catalogue"
I can import from the scanner occasionally, but often times get this error message. " this file already exists in this catalogue" and the scanned picture is discarded.
I see others have had it as well, but no solutions were posted. I'm running Photoshop elements 11 with all current updates. Thanks for the reply. My Image wasn't in a version set however. I scanned a new photo which was successsful. I then scanned a second photo different from the first, which failed. I think possibly the software for my HP scanner is at fault, since it always names the scans as image1.jpg. It doesn't give an option to increment successive scans to a different name which probably caused the problem.

When I bought my ipad 2 a few years ago there was a feature so that I could record reminders. But with all the updates, this feature is now gone. What happened to it? Also, on my iphone and imac, I can dictate and it types for me. I thought I had this feature on the ipad too, but can't find it. Does it not exist for the ipad 2 or do I have to download an app?

What happens during this 'stabilisation' phase?
Engineers say that you need to wait 48hrs/7days/10days for it to stablise.
Why? What actually happens in this period?
Is this designed to appease us that our connections could get quicker after the engineer has left so we're not annoyed with the lacklustre speeds?Well its a stabilisation period.
If they put you straight on the highest line possible it would potential be unstable so they will take it down bit by bit to get to a point where it doesn't keep falling over over thos 10 days.
I only say this as we have our VOIP at the office going over a BT broadband line and it kept dropping so they reduced the line to make it more stable. -
Stuck "letterboxing" on import from camcorder--what's going on?
I just bought my Macbook Pro TODAY and am making a two minute movie. I imported two segments of video, about two minutes each, from my camcorder using a firewire connection as directed in iMovie and in the camcorder directions. when I went to use the clips from the first segment iMovie said "Letterboxing. Please wait. This may take awhile." So I waited and waited and waited. It took like 15 minutes. With my brand new supersonic speed processor, 2 gigs of RAM, no other applications open, what was it doing to 2 minutes of video?
I thought it had to do with some wrong button or other I pushed having to do with the eerie iSight camera which was making me see myself type (so I tried to turn it off and ended up capturing myself.) This time however (second wo minutes of DV import) it's been "Letterboxing" for 25 minutes with no signs of stopping and it's not recording me. What's going on and how can I fix it??
